CHAPTER 3
-Tris’s P.O.V-
I’m sitting on the floor of a stall, crying myself out.
I can’t believe I just danced with the most popular boy in school! If he finds out who I am, then I’m doomed! My life’s going to be ruined forever!
I had run out of the gym trying to grasp what had just happened. It all seemed a bit too good to be real. I had never had a boyfriend; the closest thing to a guy friend is my second best friend, Al.
Every time the tears stop flowing, I think that’s it but they start coming out all over again. I want to go home right now! But what if I run into him somewhere?
I hear the door open and at once fall silent. I hear the tap of heels on the floor and the shoes stop right outside my stall’s door.
“I know you’re in there.” A voice says knocking on the door. I can recognize that high and mighty voice anywhere.
I take a deep breath to cover up the fact that I’ve been crying and ask “What do want Molly?!”
“Just come out will you!” She screams in frustration and pounds on the door.
“What if I don’t?!” I shout back.
“Then I’ll make you!” She screams back, again.
“How?” I ask.
“Uh…I’ll break the door!” She replies, not sounding sure at all.
This makes me crack up and I start laughing despite the fact that I had been crying only a few minutes ago.
I wipe away the tears, trying my best not to smudge my make-up. But I’m not sure how to cover up my red eyes. I sigh and open the door to reveal a really annoyed Molly glaring at me. Her arms folded over her chest and her face red with anger.
When she sees my face, she raises an eyebrow and starts to ask “Were you…”
“Yes! But now don’t ask why!” I say, cutting her in.
“Fine.” With this she saunters to the mirrors on one side of the wall and starts puffing her hair and reapplying her lipstick.
I stare at her exasperated and ask “Why did you pull me out?!”
“No I didn’t. You came out yourself.” She replies rubbing her lips to spread the lipgloss.
“Oh really?” I ask her.
She gives me her ‘do-I –have-to-explain-this’ look.
“Fine.” I decide to give up and just hear her out so that I can be alone again.
“I need your mask.” She says placing her hands on her hips. This takes me by surprise.
“W…Why?” I stutter.
“Why do you care?” She asks in the same tone.
“I CARE BECAUSE IT’S MY MASK!” I scream in reply.
“Alright then. Tobias Eaton is looking for a girl who danced with him and if I go up to him and say that I’m the girl, he won’t believe me because my mask will be different. So, I need your mask.” She orders putting out her hand.
I decide to play dumb as her future intentions become clear to me. “So why do you need MY mask?” I ask her pretending to be confused.
“Oh sweetheart, don’t act all innocent.” She tells me, her voice fierce.
“But why…” I start.
Molly cuts in before I can continue. “Because I know that you danced with Tobias Eaton and then ran away when you found out that he was someone beyond your reach.”
“How do you know this?” I ask her stunned.
“Oh! I’m just a really keen observer.” She tells me, putting on her most evil grin.
I try to stop her again. “But don’t you already have a boyfriend?”
“Uhhh… Peter’s gotten so boring these days. I thought I might as well find someone who’s still…fun.” She explains.
“And he got your attention?” I ask.
“By he if you mean Tobias, then the answer is yes.” She says.
“Wow. I wonder when your taste for boys got so good.” I mutter.
“OMG! You like him don’t you?!” She exclaims.
I decide to come clean. “Well I danced with him for some reason!”
“Can we just stop this? Give me your mask!” She screams.
When I don’t move she screams “Now!”
I sigh and pull it off. She takes hers off to and we switch them.
“Thank you my dearest stepsister.” She says smiling proudly.
“Whatever.” I say and she leaves.
I feel tears swelling up again. This time they’re there because the slight chance that I might’ve had of being with him had slipped from between my fingers.
