Turbulence
CHAPTER 54
TRIS POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I awake with a start. Tobias had set his phone alarm last night at 5 so we could get ready, but I don't want to get out of bed.
I lift my head up and instantly lower it back onto the pillow. I have a real bad headache that's for sure. I feel Tobias get up next to me and I see through my closed eyelids that the bathroom light turned on and then the door was shut.
The next thing I know it's 5:20 and Tobias is walking me into the bathroom to take a shower. I don't even remember getting out of bed. Whatever.
I let the warm water run down my body waking me up. It feels good until my back hits and it starts to stings. I bite my lip in agony and quickly change the water temperature to cold.
I get out in a matter of minutes and quickly put my hair in a braid and throw on leggings and a big sweatshirt. I'm cold right now and it will probably be cold on the plane so why not.
I look at myself through the foggy mirror and hold my head in my hands. Why does something always have to hurt.
I trudge out and grab my bag and slip on some converse.
Tobias puts his arm around me and his hand accidentally hits against my back. I wince and Tobias looks down at me and I pull him into the other room. He is the only one besides like Colby who knows that one day I'm perfectly fine and great and then the next is a terribly painful day.
"It hurts today?" He asks.
"Yeah and my head too." I mutter.
"Well the last time he hurt you.... was the 23rd and it is only the 26th I mean it's only been 3 days. It hasn't had a ton of time to heal," Tobias says carefully.
"I know," I sigh and lower myself down to the couch.
"Why don't you just go get some of the pain medication that mom and dad brought. No one would blame you, you know."
"But then they'll be worried and I don't want that. Especially since we are going on a plane. I'll be fine," I argue.
Tobias has learned that it is no use to argue with me about this so he just nods and says okay let's go then.
I take his hand and we walk out to the car and I settle into the back seat next to him.
We arrive at the airport and luckily there is barely anybody there. I don't want to be bothered by anybody. We go through security generally quick and we go find some cafe that serves breakfast this early.
"Tris!" Christina yells in my face.
"What?"
"Come with me."
I follow her into the ladies room and she quickly digs out her makeup bag of her regular bag. Sad right?
"Christina no we are going on a plane."
"Exactly. Planes may have famous people. And speaking of famous people you were on TV, just let my put on the tiniest bit and then we won't have to discuss this anymore."
I give up and she gives me a bit of concealer, mascara and lips gloss.
"Just because I was on one show doesn't mean I'm famous," I mutter.
"Highly debatable." Is all she says.
I find Tobias and he leads me to our table in the corner.
"I ordered you a Boston Creme donut. You like those right?" Tobias asks.
I nod and nibble on it.
Soon, we all walk to our gate and by 7:30 they begin boarding. I take out my braid and let my now dry hair move freely around my waist.
I find my seat with Tobias. Seats A3 and A4. I'm really glad we're in first class so I can stretch out. I wouldn't be able to survive if I was jammed I against 2 or 3 people. Especially since I'm feeling awful today. I take the aisle seat and Tobias quickly shuts the window. I completely forgot all about his fear of heights.
"Tobias, you don't have to be worried, okay. Planes are completely safe. You don't have to be scared. I'm right here."
He gives me a reassuring half smile and closes his eyes and just breathes.
As everyone gets on the flight I notice that everyone is staring at me strangely. Why? Did I do something wrong?
"Tobias," I whisper.
"Hmmph."
"Is it just me or is everyone staring at me weirdly?" I ask.
Tobias opens his eyes and stares at me with a questioning look but follows my gaze to where everyone is walking on.
More people pass and someone even extends to shake my hand. I shake it slowly and as she walks away I send a look at Tobias who looks equally confused too.
"I told you Tris! They all know you from TV you are famous!" Christina says her head coming into view from behind my chair.
Instantly it all makes sense and I quickly become shy. I don't stare up at anybody anymore just down at my phone and as soon as the last person takes there seat, I breathe a sigh of relief.
The stewardess goes over what to do in case of and emergency and I take Tobias' hand.
The engine turns on and his hand tightens around mine.
"It's okay," I murmur.
We begin to ascend in the air and I see Tobias pressing his lips together like there is no tomorrow. I squeeze his hand and soon we level out and the pilot comes on the speakers saying the regular. What a beautiful morning, thank you for flying with Hawaiian Airlines, how fast we are going, how high up we are, and how many hours until we are on the ground again which is calculated as 11 hours and 38 minutes.
Tobias slowly releases my hand and I close my eyes. I hear the bell go off telling everybody that it is now okay to walk around the aircraft and for people to use there cell phones.
"Excuse me, miss?"
I open my eyes and see someone standing in front of me.
"Hello?" I ask unsure if she is talking to me.
"Are you Beatrice Prior?" The lady asks.
"Yes...." I say.
"I just wanted to let you know that you are so brave to put up with the torture and that you are just beautiful."
"Oh um thank you very much," I say.
"Would you mind signing this?"
"Um... Sure."
I quickly sign my name on a sheet of paper and she gets all excited and walks back to her seat.
"That was weird," I say to Tobias.
"Yeah." He says back and leans back against the seat as we move even higher up in the air.
My ears pop and once again my head begins to throb.
I sigh and someone else comes up to me and just talks about what an inspiration I am to her.
"That was nice," Tobias says.
All I can do is nod.
After 7 more people had come up to me I decided I couldn't do it anymore. My head hurts too bad and I'm so tired.
I lean my head on Tobias' shoulder and close my eyes.
"I don't want any more people to some talk to me," I say.
"You sound antisocial," Tobias chuckles, but gets up and moves the curtain around our seats so nobody could see us anymore.
Tobias sits back down and I once again lean my head on his shoulder.
"Thank you."
"How does your head feel?"
I groan hoping he understands not good and that I don't want to talk anymore.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I begin to feel movement under my head and I blink my eyes open.
"Finally," Tobias breathes.
I rub my eyes and lean back up against my chair.
"I tried waking you up when they started taking orders for lunch, but you were like fast asleep."
I stretch and ease off my shoes and stick them under my seat.
"You were shivering so I put that blanket on you," Tobias motions to the black blanket wrapped around me.
"Thank you."
My head feels all foggy and heavy. I'm just so tired even though I just woke up.
"What do you want for lunch?" Tobias asks.
I look down and see that Tobias had crackers and cheese with bread and butter.
"I'll have what you are having," I say.
Tobias stares at me a second and then decides something.
He gets up and I see him grab his carry on from above our seats. He disappears from my view and I can only imagine what he is doing.
He comes back moments later with a bottle of water and his bag and pulls the curtain around us once again.
"You're going to protest but please will you do it for me?" Tobias asks.
"Do what?" I ask.
"Just promise me you will."
"Fine." I play with the bracelet Tobias got me on my wrist as he pulls out the bag of medication.
"Are you kidding me? Wasn't that in dads suitcase?" I question.
"Yeah and I had a feeling to put it in my carry on," Tobias grabs hold of the big bottle of pills, but I stop him.
"I just want an Advil for my head."
Tobias once again stares me up and down, but does as I say.
I put the pill on my tongue and quickly swallow the water.
"I want to know if you're back hurts," Tobias says gently.
"Not right now," I answer.
"If it does, you tell me okay?" He asks.
I nod and lean back against the chair.
Just as I do, turbulence comes bumping me against my chair. Hard.
Tobias winces at this.
"I don't like planes, I don't like planes, I don't like planes." He quietly chants under his breath until the turbulence stops.
My back feels as if it's on fire. Most people would probably be like, how the seats are leather? But anything even if it is soft when my back feels this way hurts when it is pressed against it.
The problem is - when I take those big pills for my back.... they make me sleep. For a long time and it's sorta like nobody can wake me up. Only when the pills have started to wear off can I begin to wake myself up. It's not good. I don't like not being in control.
Another wave of extreme turbulence hits and my back hits again against the chair.
I fidget sideways, but that doesn't work. Nothing works. Tobias is right I should just take the medicine and not worry about it.
I am about to ask for it when my crackers come and I quickly eat it making sure that she takes mine away when she takes Tobias'.
I begin to realize that I don't have to take the pill if there is no more turbulence because then there wouldn't be any more pain.
I crawl into Tobias' lap and he looks surprised and begins to ask questions.
"Do you remember when I called you Toby?" I interrupt murmuring into his shirt.
"Yeah I do. It was at the hospital why?" Tobias asks suspiciously.
"No reason."
Just then, more turbulence comes and I feel Tobias go rigid. He clamps his hand on my back to make sure I don't go falling out of the seat and I bite my tongue the hardest I have ever done.
Finally, it ends and Tobias relaxes and looks at me in the eyes and asks if I was okay.
I nod and then burst into tears.
"Oh my gosh umm okay um what's the matter Trissy?"
"It just hurts so bad and I am so weak and I just hate it. It's so embarrassing," I cry.
"You aren't weak and you shouldn't feel ashamed at all. All those people who came up to you today? They said you were such and inspiration. They couldn't imagine what it is like being you. I can't even imagine what it's like being you. You are the strongest person I know." Tobias tries to calm me down and I wipe away my tears.
"What if I don't wake in time to get off the plane?" I ask in a small voice.
"You don't have to worry about that okay? I'll do the worrying for you."
Tobias put me back in my own seat and hands me my water and quickly gets the pills which are ridiculously huge by the way and hands me the two of them.
I swallow them down and right before I fall asleep I feel Tobias take my hand in his.
