Parents
CHAPTER 21
TRIS POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hear hushed voices around me, but I lay still and keep my eyes closed. I listen and try to figure out what the people are talking about and who the people are.
"I can't wait until she is better, so we can talk!" I hear a man say.
"Yes, Colby are you sure she should have his many blankets on her? I mean look at her forehead! She is sweating!" Mom says.
"A side effect of the medicine is extreme chilliness. Her body just isn't used to this, so it is releasing water." Colby says.
"Okay, if you're sure." Dad says.
There is a pause and I take this time to move my arms to let them know that I am waking up.
"She's waking up." Dad says the obvious.
I slowly open my eyes, but let them close again. Everything was swimming in front of me. The room was lopsided and upside down. Nausea hits me like a brick wall.
I can't stop myself. I let out a moan.
"Beatrice, I need you to stay with us. We know you don't feel the best right now, but we need to make sure everything is fine." Colby says putting his hand on my head.
I slowly open my eyes and look around. Everyone has two heads and is moving back and forth, back and forth.
Tears pry there way into my eyes and I let out a sob. Dad rubs my shoulder and Colby asks what's wrong.
"My stomach." I cry.
"I knew it!" Colby swears.
"What!" Mom asks.
"Well you know how we gave her the injection? My supervisor said that was better than the pill, I didn't think so, but I followed his orders. Sometimes this happens. Bea, are you gonna need a bucket?"
I nod and force myself not dry heave. Colby races back in and I vomit into it. A few more outbursts later, I lean back onto the pillow.
Tobias runs into the room and comes over by me and kneels down next to me. He grabs my hand and rubs circles into my palm.
"I'm switching her back onto the pill. She will loose to much water, if we keep on giving her the needle." Colby says.
"Bea we need you to eat something. You need food in your system, so we can give you the pill and you won't puke again. Okay?" Colby says.
I nod and sigh. This really is life.
"Be-- Tris." Mom says. "Colby's says you can take a shower later if you want."
I quickly nod. I want a shower. I need a shower. Colby comes back with saltine crackers, water, and the pill. I slowly eat it while Tobias and dad talk about random things.
Just as I am about done, Tobias asks an interesting question.
"So, me and Tris, we are defiantly not siblings right?"
"Correct." Dad says.
"Do you guys know who my biological parents are?"
Mom and dad look at each other and nod.
"You have to promise not to freak out."
"I'm not promising anything. But, I'll try my best not to." He tells them glancing at me.
"Okay. Well you know how at the hospital, Evelyn seemed surprised that we were not dead?" Dad asks.
He nods.
"Well..... That was a cover. Your birth parents are Marcus and Evelyn." Mom says.
I sit there in shock and when I finally get my senses back, I see Tobias has his eyes widened and he suddenly stands up abruptly.
He looks at me with tears in his eyes and stalks out of the room.
"Tobias." I call weakly.
"Bea.... No offense, but he needs time. Let him be." Colby says patting my hand.
"Why would they give up him, but take me." I say tears slowly making there way down my face.
"Shhhhhh........ Get some rest." Mom coos.
I shake my head, no. I just rested. I am not resting again.
"You have to bring Tobias up here. I need him." I whisper.
Mom nods and travels to the stairs. A few minutes later she brings in a red-eyed Tobias. Dad and Colby follow mom out of the room as Tobias slumps down in his chair.
I put my hand on his. "Tobias it's okay. At least you don't have to go on a search to find them." I say trying to get a smile.
"You don't get it do you!" He says through clenched teeth. "You almost died. I should have been the ones getting the beatings! Not you! You don't deserve that! I just can't believe this." He puts his face in his hands and I reach out and gently trace my finger all around his face.
"Tobias, maybe they just knew that you would mature better with someone else." I say.
He shakes his head and rubs his fingers through his hair. He occasionally glances at me and I notice something I haven't seen before. He has dark circles around his eyes. He hasn't been sleeping. I hope he hasn't been worrying about me. I'll be fine. I think. I hope.
"Bea, I'm leaving now, but if anything unusual happens tell Tobias, mom, or dad, okay?" Colby yells.
Tobias suddenly grabs my hand.
"Tris, I need you to think. Have Marcus or Evelyn ever said anything about me. Or adoption stuff that might have not been you?"
I try and think the best I can, but I draw a blank.
"Toby, I don't know." I say.
"Think as hard as you can."
I think for about a minute when one beating comes to mind.
It was a bright, sunny fall day and I was running down the stairs and Marcus was there waiting for me. He had his belt in his hand and yelled at me to stop running. I tried, but my socks were slippery and I skidded down the stairs. He whipped my right ankle and it immediately swelled up to the size of a watermelon. I had screamed out in pain, while Marcus just muttered.
"My son would have been better than this."
He stalked out of the house and slammed the front door behind him. Evelyn came running in looking out the window as Marcus pulled out of the driveway. She glanced at me who was sobbing and holding my ankle and called Caleb downstairs.
"Oh. Bea got a boo-boo?" He asks taunting me.
"He's gone, Caleb." Evelyn says.
Caleb puts on his 'oh' face and jumps over me and kneels by my face.
"What happened?"
"He whipped my ankle." I screamed.
"Shhhh....... Shhhhhh...... It will be okay. Well bring you to the doctors."
Caleb picked me up bridal style and carried me out to the car and laid me down in the backseat. He placed my head in his lap and stroked my hair.
Evelyn sped through town trying to get to Urgent Care as fast as possible. Every time she went over a bump my ankle hit the side of the car and I whimpered.
Finally, we got there and Caleb ran me into the place with Evelyn trailing behind us.
The nurses there quickly put me in a room and got a doctor to come in and look at it. He took one look at it and told us it was a complete break and that I might need surgery. I had started to cry because I don't want surgery. Surgery is a scary word.
He wrapped it up and gave me crutches telling me to not put any weight on it and to go to the real doctors soon.
The doctor them got a pain killer in liquid form. He brought it back and told me that I needed to drink this. I accepted and it was bad.
"Bad Bea?" Caleb asks.
I nod and swallow. Caleb sits down on the bed next to me and I leaned against him.
"Beatrice, how do you feel? Is the pain any better?" The doctor asks five minutes later.
I nod and realize that I can't feel my ankle. "It feels numb." I say.
"Good, good. Are you tired at all?"
"A little bit." I say.
"Well, you can go to sleep if you want to. The medicine is supposed to make you a little sleepy." The doctor says.
Caleb rubs my arm and I hear the doctor talking with Evelyn. My eyes begin to get heavy and it takes all my effort to blink them open again. I lean farther on Caleb and he whispers five words in my ear.
"Have a good nap, Bea." And with that my eyes close and don't open again.
TOBIAS POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I watch as Tris stares into space and I can tell that she is thinking hard. All of a sudden, her eyes show pain and fear. She shakes and closes her eyes.
"Tris."
No response.
"TRIS!" I yell.
She opens her eyes and says, "I remember, Tobias."
I squeeze her hand.
"It was when he whipped my ankle and I screamed. He turned around and said, 'my son would have been better than this.' I thought he meant Caleb, but maybe meant you." Tris says.
I nod and think. Maybe he did mean me. Maybe he didn't want to give me up. Maybe he---
My thoughts are interrupted by Tris getting out of bed.
"Where do you think you're going?" I ask.
"I need to tell Caleb!" She says.
She walks out of my room, keeping her hand in the wall for support and goes into the guest bedroom, where Caleb is.
I walk behind her and when she see's Caleb she walks a bit faster and wraps her arms around his stomach.
He seems surprised, but hugs back giving me a face like 'what is this all about.' I just shake my head and shrug
my shoulders.
She pulls away keeping her hands on his wrists and whispers 'thank you.'
"For what?" He asks.
"For when I broke my ankle for being..... Nice...... Oh my gosh. You were nice! When you told me you didn't want to be mean, I didn't believe you, but now I remember!" She says excitedly.
"That's good Bea. That's good. " He says.
TRIS POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Tris, do you want to go downstairs?" Tobias asks.
I nod and he takes my hand slowly walking with me.
When we finally make it downstairs I collapse in the couch and grab the remote. Tobias chuckles.
"I see you just want the TV and not me, huh."
I giggle and say, "yep."
"You put something good on and I'll be right back."
"Wait, where are you going?" I ask.
"I need to talk to Caleb about something." Tobias answers.
He runs up the stairs and all I'm thinking is 'this will not be good.'
