Marcus

CHAPTER 9

TRIS POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I wake up in a dark, damp room. Wait it's not a room. It's a lot bigger than a room. I look around and see it. That's when I know my life is over.

I see his ironing board and all of his belts lined up nicely. Marcus. I am in my old house. In my basement.

I try to get up, but I can't for two reasons. My head feels as if it is about to explode because of course Eric probably hit me with a big rock because he is pure evil. And number two. My hands are tied to a pole and the knots are so tight around my wrist, that I'm afraid that I will get a blood clot. My feet are tied to some sort of heavy metal sticking out of the ground.

I hear Marcus start yelling something to probably, Evelyn, and then the door to the basement open and slam shut. I hear heavy footsteps and then I see him.

"Beatrice, so happy you decided to join me again. We are going to have such fun today. Well really tonight. You have been out for a very long time. Almost a day. Luckily night is falling, so we can begin." He clasps his hand together and start muttering to himself.

He grabs one of his belts and some fishing hooks and start to pierce holes in the belt, so they can dig into my skin.

This will not be good at all. He soon walks over to me and starts to untie my wrists and feet.

"I want you out of my basement. You don't deserve to be laying around! Get up and walk into the living room!" He yells.

I slowly get up and start to walk as I feel the whip come down on my back, the fish hooks piercing my skin. I scream and he yells at me to shut up and run up the stairs.

When I finally do get up the stairs, 6 whips later, he whips me and I fall down to the ground. This time the fish hook pierced deep into my skin. I could feel it.

I fall to the ground and start to crawl to the living room as he yells hurtful words at me.

I get into the center of the living room and he beats me ruthlessly. He chose this room because it has no windows and no doors. He took a few breaks to drink a beer and then chuck it at my head. I've already blacked out a couple times. My screams have become hoarse and my tears have become a rushing waterfall.

He has already drank nine beers and is on his tenth. The remains of them are either on the floor or in me. I hear him groan. Obviously done. He says a few swears and chucks it at me.

It lands deep in my shoulder and I scream once more.

I see black spots, but I fight through it. I can't let him win. I can't.

He starts to whip me again, but then they suddenly stop and I hear a thump.

I look over and see him laying in the floor passed out.

I painfully crawl to the stairs, hoping to get to my room before I pass out. My dress was taken off ages ago, so I only have on my bra. Luckily under my dress, I had spandex, in case truth or dare got out of hand. I slowly crawl up the stairs and land in a thump at the top. The black dots are getting severe and it takes all my effort to start crawling again.

I feel myself tip to the left and bang against the wall. But then, the strangest thing happened. The wall moved. And I hear hushed voices.

Before the blackness takes over I see Caleb and Evelyn pull me in and start saying things to me, looking nervous. Very nervous.

**********************************

I open my eyes to see that I am on a bed on my stinging, aching back, and that there is curtain closed guarding the sun that is rising to come in. I feel my head throbbing and there is a damp rag on it.

I can't resist. I let sound escape my lips. I moan and I hear footsteps. Not the heavy footsteps of Marcus, though. It is light footsteps.

Evelyn comes in my view and I can see the relief in her eyes. She slowly moves the washcloth around my head not saying a word.

"Beatrice, we didn't think you were going to make it. I was so worried." She says.

I hear a yawn and then more footsteps. Caleb comes and embraces me in a hug, tears in his eyes.

I gasp and he quickly led go saying 'sorry, sorry, sorry.'

I am so confused right now. When has Evelyn cared about me and Caleb, well cried for me. Never.

Evelyn starts to explain that all these years she had wanted to treat me like her own child, but Marcus wouldn't let her and Caleb, too.

She told me that she had tried to save me more than once last night, but Marcus would hit her and tell her to go upstairs.

She said that when they heard the thump on the door she quickly opened the door knowing that it might be me and it was. They said that I passed out and they were worried that I would die from blood loss and head injuries.

They put me on Caleb's bed and they wrapped me in a lot of gauze and they had to keep changing it every few hours.

They had taken out all of the broken glass and had stitched it up.

Evelyn had kept Marcus sleeping by using very strong sleeping pills and that I had nothing to worry about. I wasn't so sure.

Caleb had put one of his huge shirts in me, that went down to my knees and Evelyn had given me a pair of her shorts.

"Beatrice, you need sleep. A lot of it, too. But before you go, I need to know something."

I make a noise, indicating to go on and she asks a question.

"You had deep, deep, deep cuts in your back with the whip marks. Sweetie, what did he do? What did he use?" She asks.

"Fish hooks." I whisper my voice hoarse. "Fishhooks."

"Oh my gosh." She says covering her mouth with her hand.

"I can't believe this. Now go to sleep and under no circumstances talking. Do you understand?" She says.

"Mmmhhhh."

"Okay good. Sweet dreams." She kisses my cheek as my eyes close against my will.

I am sleeping, but I can still hear everything going on around me. It's one of those weird things. Where you are so tired, you're sleeping, but not really.

I hear footsteps and hushed talking. I must have been out for a long time because I can hear plates and forks clinking together.

Then something happens. I hear running. The door being opened and closed. Then whisper yelling. My hand being taken into a big, warm hand.

I force myself to open my eyes and all I see is his big blue eyes swallowing me whole. He has tears in his eyes and everyone starts talking at once.

"Beatrice who is this?" Caleb and Evelyn say at the same time.

"I'm Four." Tobias answers for me. I smile gratefully at him.

"Like the number?" Caleb asks.

"Yes is there a problem."

"No, no, not at all."

"Good." Tobias turns back to me and starts speaking very fast.

"TrisIwentlookingeverywhereforyou. I wassearchingforyousincethenightofthe party."

"Slow.... Down.." I whisper.

"Tris I went looking for you everywhere for you. I've been searching since the night of the party. The gang and I went to Eric, Peter, and Lauren's house. Mom and dad wanted to call the police, but I said that was a bad idea because of Marcus. I didn't think you would be here. I mean, I just didn't know and I'm so sorry. I'm so, so, so sorry."

"It's okay." I whisper. All of a sudden, I start coughing and hacking up blood. Lots of it, too.

Tobias moved so he was behind me holding my hair up. Evelyn ran over and gave me a little bucket. Finally, I stopped coughing and leaned back onto the pillows and Tobias, Evelyn, and Caleb started fighting.

"We'll go back to my house. My mother is a nurse-- sort of." Tobias says.

"No way. She stays here. We don't know them. They could be physco killers for all we know." Evelyn states.

I just block them all out, until Tobias asks me,

"Tris what do you think. You do know them."

".... Why don't ...... Go your house....... They come, too." I whisper.

"Is that fine with everyone?" Tobias asks.

"Yeah sure." Caleb mutters.

"Fine." Evelyn says.

"Okay Tris, I'm going to pick you up bridal style and carry you there. Okay?"

I'll avoid the back I promise." Tobias tells me.

I nod my head and he carefully eases one hand under my knees and his second hand under my shoulder area, but higher.

He lifts me up into his arms and I cringe at the smallest sudden movement. I feel the oncoming tears that I don't want anyone to see, so I bury my head in Tobias's chest.

I feel him start walking down the stairs, occasionally stopping and asking me if I was okay.

I hear him tell Caleb to do something and I feel the warm air that tells me we are outside. The warm air is the worst with my pain. It makes the cuts all sticky and disgusting. And did I mention painful? It makes it very painful.

I cry out and Tobias asks what's wrong with urgency in his voice. I don't answer. It would take too much strength.

I feel Tobias pick up his pace and him yell at someone to knock on the door. I hear the knocking and then the gasps and yells. I guess mom and dad are here now.

I feel myself being lain on something fluffy and soft and Tobias sits down next to my tear-streaked face.

Evelyn and Caleb are introduced to mom and dad and then mom comes running over. Evelyn explains what happened and she runs into the bathroom and comes out with a suitcase sized first aid kit.

Tobias turns me on my stomach, so my back is facing them and I feel them carefully start unwrapping the gauze.

"This might hurt a little." My father says.

I feel liquid being poured on me and I scream bloody murder. This hurts a lot more than a little. This is like red hot acid being burned into you. Tobias is stroking my hair saying 'shhhhhhh it's almost done' but I still feel it. I don't think it will ever be done.

And what do I do next? I pass out.
