Apologies and Thank-You's

Chapter 75

TRIS POV

Movement. It's everywhere around me. I feel people bustling around beside me and surprisingly, I think I'm moving too.

I force my eyes open a crack to reveal a stressed looking Tobias. I wiggle around in his arms and he glances down at me, smiling softly when he learns that I am awake.

Tobias yells at everybody to stop for a moment and he gently places me down on one of the airport chairs.

"How are you feeling?" He asks kneeling in front of me, gently brushing the hair out of my face.

I shrug. "I feel okay. Just a little weak," I whisper and he nods.

"We're all going to the hospital. Just a heads up," he says with a sigh.

"What, no, c'mon. I'm fine really," I say, yawning.

"Yeah, but it's not just you Trissy. They're going to check us all out and we're probably all going to be put in overnight for observation," Tobias explains.

"Only one night?" I ask.

"One night," he confirms. "Then we're going home and we get to relax all week. How does that sound?" He asks with a grin.

I nod. "Sounds pretty good."

"Do you think you can walk now?" Tobias asks standing up, offering me his hand.

I take it and begin to slowly make my way back to our group who's been waiting for us.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The hospital is hot and busy with doctors and nurses running around like chickens without heads. Mom and dad sign all of us in and a nurse leads us to one big room.
"I figured you'd all want to share a room," she states. "The doctor will be in shortly."
Everyone climbs up on a bed and sprawls out so they're comfortable.
"I'm sorry guys," I whisper.
"It's not your fault Tris, don't blame yourself," Christina says.
I shake my head. "I got you guys into this mess. You guys shouldn't be one of Marcus's targets and because of me you are. I'm sorry," I say looking around at everyone.
Everyone begins saying that it's not my fault as there is a knock on the door. The doctor strolls in and I roll my eyes in disgust. This is the man that would hurt my back more than it already was in our routine checkups. This is the man that would press down hard on the patches of my back that were bruised and bumped to see 'where it hurt the most.' I watch Tobias tense up and he looks over at me in worry.
"Where's Colby?" I ask loudly.
The doctor glares over at me and sighs as if my question is a big inconvenience.
"He's currently with another patient so I volunteered to take his place," he says lazily.
"We'll wait then," Tobias says, standing up.
The doctor rolls his eyes and backs up towards the door. "Fine, whatever. You're not my problem."
He slams the door shut and I giggle. Christina starts laughing too and soon were all laughing at that pathetic doctor. I glance over at Tobias, expecting him to be laughing but instead I see his face squished in discomfort.
I jump up off my bed and take a few steps and climb up on Tobias' bed. "What's the matter?" I ask him quietly.
"What? Nothing," He says nonchalantly.
"Tobias, I know you and something's wrong. What is it?" I whisper furiously.
He sighs. "When Marcus attacked me, he whipped me and uh.. Well that wound keeps opening up I think," he states in a small voice.
"Let me see," I order and he slowly peels off his shirt. He gingerly turns, so his back is towards me and a gasp escapes from my lips. There is a huge gash in his back cutting from the top of his shoulder to the middle of his lower back. The conversation in the room immediately ceases and everyone turns to look at me, worried expressions on their face.
"Tobias Eaton," I hiss in his ear. "You should not have been carrying me. You probably opened it up even more when you did that!" I exclaim and he shakes his head.
"Tris, it's going to be fine. It doesn't even hurt that much. And plus you're super light so carrying you had nothing to do with the size of the cut. And even if it did, you've been through double --no triple -- no quadruple -- no a hundred times worse than this. I'm fine, okay. I'm fine Trissy," he says and I shake my head in disbelief.
"I am so sorry," I breathe.
"You need to stop saying that," Tobias says, annoyed.
"Well it's--" I get cut off by Colby entering the room.
He waves hello to everyone and walks over to Tobias and I. "Well Bea, I would assume you are the most injured so let's start with you," he states.
"No. Please Colby, start with him. Look at this," I please motioning to Tobias' back.
"Ooh. Rough break man. Alright let's see what I can do," he quickly pulls a curtain around Tobias' bed and pushes me out pointing to my bed. I huff and lay down, resting my head on the crinkly pillow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"No!" I shriek sitting up, looking around wildly.

Tobias jumps up and wraps his arm around me murmuring that it was just a dream and that everything is fine. I squirm in his grasp and push him away, running out of the room, everyone's eyes on me. Once outside, I lean back against the wall and take a deep breath in an attempt to calm down. Everyone is okay. It was just a dream.

I begin to walk slowly down the hall determined to shake the image of Marcus and Jeanine attacking everybody out of my head.

"Tris! Hey!" Someone says loudly and I turn around. Eric.

He falls into step beside me and it stays quiet between the both of us for a few minutes.

"I've been meaning to say thanks," I mumble softly.

"It was not a big deal. I know I'm not a nice, good guy but I know wrong when I see it. What Marcus was doing to you guys... It just wasn't right, you know?" He says and turns his head to look at me.

"I'm fine," I say quickly, anticipating his question. He nods silently.

"I'm sorry for being such a jerk." Now it's his turn to mumble. "I'm pretty rude. I shouldn't have been. Especially when I found out about the situation. I'm sorry Tris."

I shake it off. "You basically saved us all back there. No need for an apology."

He smiles but stops walking. I turn to look at him. "What's wrong?"

"Look, I don't know why you aren't resting or whatever. It's probably a good enough reason and all, but you should be getting back to the room. I wouldn't be a good guy if I let you roam around here alone when you're hurt and probably hurting. Just let me take you back there okay?" He says and I sigh, nodding.

He leads me back to the room and stands awkwardly at the door when everyone turns. He breathes in deeply and begins to turn, opening the door when everyone starts to yell at him to stop.

Tobias gets up and gently wraps an arm around my waist and leads me back to my bed, laying down with me.

I hear everyone begin telling Eric how he's changed and that they wanted to say thanks for getting everyone out of there. He smiles and starts to exit once again when Tobias shouts for him to come back.

Eric slowly walks over to us and Tobias sits up. "Seriously bro, thank you. You're a good man. And thank you especially for taking care of Tris in there when we couldn't. You're actually an okay guy," Tobias says with a light laugh and Eric chuckles. They shake hands and Eric exits the room for real this time.

Tobias lays back down and I put my head on his chest. He puts one hand lightly on the small of my back and uses the other to stroke my hair. "I love you," he murmurs into my head. "Then it's a good thing that I love you too," I whisper.

I am on the edge of sleep when I feel a hand on my arm. I flinch backwards, my eyes opening wide staring at whoever it is. Just Colby.

"I never checked up on you," he whispers and I notice that everyone is asleep.

I carefully climb out of the bed, trying not to wake Tobias which I successfully do. It's good that he's sleeping. He probably hasn't gotten a decent rest in a long time. He's always up with me when I can't sleep which is super sweet of him, but it has probably begun to take a toll.

Colby brings me into a different unoccupied room and begins a routine checkup on me. The only harmed body part is my back which Colby examines more carefully. He disinfects all the gashes and wraps a bit of gauze over some of the more affected areas, let's say.

"You're strong, Bea. You're really, really strong." He wraps me into a hug before sending me off to bed.

I quietly go back into our room and gently climb back into bed, nestling my head into Tobias' side.

I think that soon, everything is going to be alright.
