"Dauntless-born, go with Lauren, transfers stay with me." The guy says the groups split and suddenly ours is much smaller. "Most of the time I work in intelligence, but during your training, I'll be your instructor. My name's Four" then it clicks is that why he gave me that look? Because his name is a number as well? Who would of thought.

"Four like the number?" Cristina says she didn't hear the name I chose yet.

"Exactly like the number" he says

"What happened, one through three were taken?" She jokes but he didn't seem impressed or humerus. Instead he walked over closer to her and stared down at her.

"What's your name?" He asks

"Christina" she says

"Well, Christina the first lesson you learn from me if you wanna survive here, is keep your mouth shut. Do you understand me?" He asks

"Yes" Christina replies softly.

"Good. Follow me" he says and began walking. We follow behind him until he stops. "This is the pit the center of life here at Dauntless." He says continuing to walk. We reach a room with beds lined up. "You're going to be sleeping here for the next 10 weeks" he says

"Girls or boys?" Someone asks

"Both" he says

"Nice" a girl says

"If you like this, you're gonna love the bathroom" he walks through the room and into another room which reveals an open bathroom.

"Great.." a girl says

"Okay.." someone else says

"Seriously?"

"Is there no other area?"

"Are you kidding?"

"You should feel right at home, Candor. Everything out in the open" Four says "get changed" he says before leaving not before I make eye contact with him but look away before he could scowl me.

"Shower, anyone?" Someone says I find the clothes and began changing I felt extremely uncomfortable. And to make it worse of course someone had to make a comment.

"Nice legs, stiff!" I try to cover my legs the best I could but you could still see them. After changing Christina and I head to the cafeteria to eat. Where we arrive the entire place is packed the only spot left was beside four our leader.

"Shall we sit there?" I asks we take a seat beside four Christina sitting to my left, four to my right. I pick between my food not really sure what to do with it. "Have you never seen a hamburger before?"  Christina asks

"No, I've seen one. I just have never eaten one." I say poking at the circular meat.

"Abnegation eat plain food. Plant-based diet with no sauces and a minimum of seasoning." A boy that sat across from us says.

"Which textbook did you swallow?" Christina says he chuckles and puts his hand out "nice to meet you, too. I'm Will. Erudite" he says

"Of course you are. No offense, but I'm surprised Abnegation even eats at all too selfish, right?." Christina says "no wonder you left" she adds

"You gotta be pretty self-confident to be friends with Candor." Will says

"What is that suppose to mean?" Christina says

"You have no filter. You say the first thing that comes into your head." Will says

"You mean like, you're an idiot?" Al says we all chuckle.

"Nice one, Al. At least we tell the truth." Christina says

"Erudite can tell the truth because we have the facts." Will says

"I don't want to hear about your old factions. You're Dauntless now." Four, our leader says.

"Were you a transfer, too? Or Dauntless-born?" I ask looking over at him.

"Are you kidding?" He says looking at me I look at him confused.

"No" I say

"What makes you think you can talk to me?" He says

"Must be because you're so approachable" I say Christina sneers he looks over at me surprised at what I said then he turned back to his food.

"Careful" he says suddenly a guy calls out his name and walks over but that was when Christina spoke.

"You my friend, have a death wish." She says

"You know" Al whispers "he was first in his class. They tried to recruit him for leadership twice, but he said no" I wonder why he said no? an alarm starts blaring scaring the life out of me. All the dauntless began clanking their cups on the table and then it stops and someone speaks.

"Initiates, stand" the voice says we all stand up from our seats and face the man above. "You have chosen to join the warrior faction tasked with the defense of this city and all its inhabitants. We believe in ordinary acts of bravery and the courage that drives one person to stand up for another. Respect that. Do us proud." The man finishes and everyone cheers suddenly I'm picked up by the dauntless. Christina and all the other initiates are as well they carry us around and then set us down on the ground again.

"I want everyone in The Pit. Two minutes" Four says and then walks away. Christina and I chat while we head to The Pit about our factions and what not. When we arrive at The Pit four and Eric are there waiting.

"There are two stages of training. The first is physical. Push your bodies to the breaking point and you'll master the methods of combat. The second is mental. Again, breaking point. You'll face your worst fears and conquer them unless they get you first. You'll be trained separately from the Dauntless-born, but you'll be ranked together. After initiations, ranking will determine what jobs you love into. Leadership, guarding the fence, or keeping the factionless from killing each other." Four says

"The rankings will also determine who gets cut" Eric adds

"Cut?" Christina says

"At the end of each stage of training, the lowest-ranking initiates will be leaving us." Eric says

"To do what?" Will asks

"There's no going home to your families. So you'll live factionless." Eric says. What! Factionless!?

"Why didn't we know that?" Al asks

"It's a new rule" Eric says

"A new rule? Somebody should have told us that" Christina says

"Why? Would you have chosen differently? Out of fear? I mean, if that's the case, you might as well get out now. If you're really one of us, it won't matter to you that you might fail. Now you chose us. Now we get to choose you." Eric says we all look around at each other Christina and I look at each other. We're taken outside where we are handed guns and told to shoot at the targets. Four pushes a gun to my chest rather violently I don't take note to It and move on to a target. Once everyone gets their guns we all start shooting. After a couple minutes I still haven't got one shot on the target yet.

"Statistically speaking, you should have hit the target at least once by now. Even by accident" Peter says I choose to ignore him and continue shooting. Eventually I hit the center of the target and smile proud of myself. We finished with the guns and took a jog out to where the factionless live.

"Hey. What have you got?" Four says to a guy

"Factionless. Not doing anything" the guy says

"Check it out, stiff. That's gonna be your new family" Peter says nudging me "go say hi" he adds I roll my eyes and look out at the factionless. They look miserable I can't let that happen to me.

"You ready for some real fighting?" Christina asks me

"Not even close" I say back to her

"First jumper! In the ring" Eric yells that was me. I walk away from Christina and into the ring. "Last jumper! Time to fight" the last jumper was a tall girl I didn't know her name but she looked scary and she was definitely much bigger then me.

"How long do we fight for?" She asks

"Till one of you can't continue" Eric says

"Or one of you concedes" Four says

"According to the old rules. New rules, no one concedes" Eric says

"You really want to lose em on their first fight?" Four says to Eric.

"A brave man never surrenders" Eric says

"Lucky for you, those weren't the rules when we fought" Four says Eric ignores him and continues talking. Did they hate each other?

"You'll be scored on this, so fight hard." Eric says we both look at him and then at each other. "Go!" He shouts.

"Don't be scared, stiff!" Peter calls the girl starts shuffling getting closer to me. I shuffle as well moving away from her. She swings at me but I duck it.

"Nice, 13!" Christina says I got distracted by her and let a swing hit me straight in the jaw. I yelp wincing putting my hand to my jaw and then focusing back on the fight. I go to kick her but she grabs my leg and throws me to the ground. She then repeatedly kicks me in the stomach until Finally she hits me hard enough in the face that I couldn't continue.

"All right, guys, over here" Eric says I was sitting aside with an ice pack to my jaw I got up and jogged over to the group where a big white board with our names on it. "Listen up. Know what this board is? It's your life. We grade you every day. If you're still in the red by the end of the first stage, you're out" he says

"I'm never gonna make it." I say to Chris seeing I'm in 32 in the red.

"Yes, you are" she says

"I'm the weakest one here" I say

"Then you'll be most improved" she says

"You're Candor. You're not suppose to lie" I say

"I was Candor. And I'm not lying." She says smiling at me. I smile back but weakly I knew I wasn't going to make it.

"If they cut me, I think my parents would take me back" Al says

"No, it doesn't work like that. Even if they wanted to, their faction wouldn't allow it" Will says

"Even if I was able to go back, I wouldn't belong there anymore" I say

"this is getting depressing" Chris says

"Yeah" Al chuckles

"You know what we should do? Get tattoos" Christina says
