VII
I stand between the Dauntless initiates. We are moving slowly towards the exit, very slowly.
I hate the pace. The more slow we go, the more my parents see me going me away from them.
I don't want to look at them, I don't want to know what they think but I have to.
For one last time I have to see them, otherwise, I will regret it everyday.
I take a deep breath and look up. All the Dauntless are taller than me, I can only see their shoulders.
I take deep breaths and as we were about to exit, I look back at my parents, and immediately, I wish I hadn't.
My dad is looking at me with a very big frown on his face and even from this distance, I can see the tears in his eyes. Besides him, my mom is smiling but her eyes show some kind of a fear.
What fear? Is it about what I am?
Everyone pushes me forward and I get a last glimpse of my parents and then, hooting starts around me.
Everyone is shouting in joy, I'm not sure what the reason for joy is but I smile anyways. Listening to all of them makes me happy.
They start running and I'm surprised when they run towards the stairs, because I thought only Abnegation used the stairs.
The hooting continued and I run with then down the stairs. This time, there is a rush inside me rather than the pain in my legs, and for a moment I think that this is what freedom feels like but this is nothing. This is just a bunch of happy Dauntless, running and shouting because they have new set pf initiates, who will be the members of Dauntless.
After the Choosing Ceremony, our respective factions are responsible for our further education. So the free, reckless and loud Dauntless are now responsible for my further education, of which I am a part of.
When the stairs end, everyone runs towards the train tracks, and I know what our next move is.
Not even after a second, I hear a faint whistle of the train.
"Jesus! We have to jump on that?!" An Erudite boy asks me and I nod.
"I've never seen the train stop." I say and he shakes his head, in disbelief I think.
All the Dauntless in front of us start to run along the track when the train comes. One by one, they fill into the carts when only the transfer initiates are left.
Two Candor boys and a Candor girl are the first one to make a move, after that, the erudite boy who talked to me a few minutes ago and then one more Candor girl and then, me.
I hold on to the handle of the train and push my body forward, into the compartment and the Candor girl who jumped in before me help me a little to get in.
"Thanks," I say out if breathe.
Only an Amity boy is left after me and he does not make it. I watch him kneel down on his knee on the tracks, sobbing.
He is factionless now.
"You alright?" The girl who helped me asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine, thank you."
The train wobbles a little and we lose our balance and our hands automatically find something to hold which happens to be the girl's forearm.
When the train is still, I pull her arm and at first she gives me a confused look but then I sit on the train floor and she does too.
"I'm Christina." She says extending her hand. Christina is a tall, dark short haired girl. She's pretty.
In Abnegation, all we did was nod at each other to greet someone, this handshaking thing is very unfamiliar to me but I still do.
"Beatrice." I say shaking her hands two times.
"Do you know where they are taking us?" She asks.
"I think the Dauntless headquarters." I say.
"Nobody knows where it is," She says, "It's like they pop out of a hole or something." She says and I laugh.
"Really! And here they are, trying to kill us when we haven't even started initiation." She says and I shake my head.
As soon as we quite down, my mind goes back to my parents and Caleb.
The thought that Caleb joined Erudite is still like a dream to me. How can he join them when they were attacking our faction-our previous faction-like that?
How can he join then when our own father hated them so much?!
"They're jumping!" Someone shouts, which brings me back from my dream world-I'm not sure if it is really a dream world-but whatever it is.
How can they jump?! We are seven stories up in the air?!
I stand taking support of the train wall and Christina does the same. We walk to the gate and lean outside the train gate and at that second, one of the Dauntless jumps out of the train cart onto a roof.
"Are you freaking kidding me?!" Christina shouts over the wind and I look at her, a horrified expression on my face.
"Hold my hand," She says.
"What?" I ask in confusion.
"I can't do it unless someone drags me! Hold my hand! I'm not going to be factionless and I'm doing you a favour by this, because if you are thinking of not jumping then you have to, for me, so then again you won't be factionless." She shouts over the wind and I shake my head.
"I wasn't thinking of "not" jumping." I say and take her hand.
I close my eyes and take deep breaths. I try to concentrate on my breathing rather than the fact that I'm about to jump onto a roof from a moving train.
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.
I open my eyes and back away till the end of the cart with Christina. I breathe again and take a run.
I jump out of the cart, a shout escaping Christina's and my mouth.
There is a moment of weightlessness and then, we hit the roof ground hard, which resulted in a scraped elbow for me and a little injury on Christina's head.
Christina laughs. She starts to laugh hysterically.
"That was kind of awesome!" She exclaims and a little laugh escapes my mouth too.
"Alright, listen up!" A dark man with almost a bald head shouts from the other side of the roof.
He is standing on the ledge of the roof. A little miss balance, and he'll fall down.
But I guess that's what Dauntless is about, taking risks.
"I'm Max! One of your leaders and if you want to get into Dauntless, this is the way in." He says looking behind him, looking below him.
"You want us to jump from there?" An Erudite girl asks in shock and for some reason, I don't know why it is shocking her so much.
Max just raises an eyebrow and smirks at her for an answer.
"Well, someone gotta go first." He says and there is pin drop silence among us.
Nobody dares to move forward.
A thought crosses my mind.
There must be something down there which won't let us die.
They won't kill us like that. They will be stupid if they did.
But then, another thought crosses my mind that what if it's some kind of a test, a test where they will actually make someone jump and let them die just to prove to them that there is a fine line between bravery and stupidity?
But I don't think they will do that. This is a very Erudite way of thinking, which the Dauntless won't do.
Hoping that my latter thought is not true, I step towards the ledge.
Everyone give me a look of 'are you stupid' but I don't care.
I reach the edge of the ledge and Max jumps down, looking at me.
I lean forward and my heart drops when I see what's past the ledge.
I look back at Max and he is smirking at me.
I can't back away now.
I have to jump.
I have to.
I gulp and look down again.
There's a big hole in the center which looks like it has been made by breaking the wooden surface it must have had sometime. But that's it.
That's all I see.
Beyond that it is dark.
But I have to jump.
I make a move and climb up on the ledge, slowly so that I don't fall without me knowing.
Once I'm standing upright on the ledge, I take deep breaths.
"We don't have all day, initiate." Max shouts from behind.
Shut up! You're making me jump off a ledge for God's sake!
I know I can't say that. So I just shake my head little and without thinking, I jump.
I feel the weightless feeling again and then I hit something semi hard.
A net.
They made me jump into a net.
My breathes are rapid. My heart feels like it has jumped up to my head and a laugh bubbles out of my mouth.
I lay there, holding the net and laughing at how naive all this is but this is what I'm a part of now.
My thoughts are interrupted when the net is pulled from one side and my body is thrown in that direction, making me sit up a little.
The person who pulled the net is a boy, his hair short and his eyes a dark shade of blue which are deep as the ocean.
He is smiling at me, trying to stifle the shock.
"What you got pushed?" He says, his voice is deep, very very deep.
"No." I say in all confidence and he smiles.
He reaches for me and I back away a little by instinct, but with no success.
He has already reached me and has held me by my armpits.
He pulls me down the net and I stumble a little, my legs shaking from all the jumping and adrenaline.
He helps me stand straight and then quickly removes his hands from me.
"Can't believe this," A girl behind him says and that is when I notice all the people standing around.
"A stiff has jumped first?"
"There's a reason why she left them Lauren." The boy says and then he looks at me.
He has a beautiful face, all rock hard and handsome types.
"What's your name?" He asks me, his eyes a curious shade of blue.
I was about to say my name, but then "Beatrice" just doesn't sound right.
"You can pick a new one if you want," He says to me, reading my mind, "But make it good, you don't get to pick again."
I nod a little.
I have left behind my faction.
I have a new faction.
I can be remade here.
"My name's Tris." I say.
"Make the announcement, Four," Lauren says to him, Four.
"First jumper-Tris!" He shouts to the people standing and they start shouting and hooting.
I laugh softly, looking at all of them. I'm one of them now.
A shrill shouts interrupts their celebration and I look behind me to find Christina hitting the net and then she shouts, "What in the freaking world is wrong with you guys!"
I gasp when she says that and then a laugh escapes my mouth.
I look at Four who just rolls his eyes and his next move surprises me.
He comes close to me and keep a hand on the small of my back, pushing me forward and whispers in my ear, "Welcome to Dauntless."
