Dita and the magic hump

Chapter 4: Goat's cheese

.

When Little Nose told him that they were approaching the fields, she imagined that she would see people suffering greatly from the exhausting work, but she saw something different.

Indeed, the work looked exhausting, but people looked good. Their clothes seemed to be of a better quality than the peasants of their world, and the most intriguing: there were strange artifacts made of wood, which were used by the women, it seemed that they threw the wheat into these things, and so they separated the grains from the rest of the vegetable matter by turning a kind of crank on one side.

"Unbelievable, I never believed that the grains could be separated from the wheat so easily."

"Humans are ingenious, they build a lot of strange things to make daily life easier, I suppose they are lazy."

"Look who's talking, cats sleeps most of the day."

"But we do it because it's in our nature to do it. On the other hand, you humans don't need to sleep so much."

"Oh, look, they've already seen us."

A couple of men saw the curious pair and Dita became nervous, but the sweaty faces were not distrustful but relaxed and saw her pass before returning to her daily labors.

The sun was still inclement and the skins of water that Dita took from her hump were no longer enough to refresh them.

"I think the best thing would be to buy a horse. That way we would go faster and more rested."

"But I don't know how to ride a horse, I've taken care of them on my brother's farm, but I've never ridden one."

"Don't worry, Dita, I can get on the horse's head and tell him to go carefully and wherever we want."

"But how are we going to buy a horse?"

"Have you forgotten the coins we found in the witch's house?"

"Oh, yes, I remember. I had never seen a coin before in my life, I knew they existed. I heard that in the king's castle they are used sometimes, with one you can buy an ox."

"Take out some of the coins, in this you will have to help me Dita because I have no idea how to use human coins."

"Well, I don't know much either, I don't know how much a horse can cost."

"Then, we have no choice but to trust the seller and not to deceive us, but don't worry, with my nose I can know where we have to go and with whom."

Fortunately, Little Nose' words seemed to be true because once they arrived in a village, the cat led Dita to a person who, according to the feline, smelled of honesty.

Unfortunately, the coins they found were not enough to buy a horse and they were not enough to buy a donkey, but they could get a goat and the seller, who had a good day, gave them the cowbell.

"This thing that that human gave us was spoiled, with good reason it was free, in short, at least he didn't deceive us with the goat. I suppose I can repair it, my paws can go down to the bottom," said Little Nose and became anxious with the cowbell; at the end, he was able to fix it and melodious sounds were already coming out of it.

"Sounds very good, we'll put it on the goat."

"My nose tells me that this cowbell and the goat are going to be very useful to us in the future. Now let's go to another town."

"Why can't we stay here? Everything looks very clean."

"Trust me Dita, my nose tells me that the best thing is to set out for a more important town, I think we should go near the castle."

"All right, I trust you, Little Nose."

That said, they were the two friends riding on the goat and with the arrival of a new day, they saw their eyes peep out the silhouettes of a new village, this time a much larger one.

"Wow, everything is so big and beautiful. I've never seen so many people in such beautiful and clean clothes. Everyone smells of cleanliness and the streets... There's no garbage or feces anywhere, everything is so clean. Look, little nose, you were right, the women here have different hairstyles, just like the one I have now."

Dita kept turning her head around, but without a doubt what surprised her most was the fact that several women, even the youngest ones, wore various hair ornaments, necklaces and even rings, apparently made of gold or silver.

"Little Nose, how much wealth, had never seen anything like it. I had heard that the bishops in the cities wear a lot of gold jewelry, but to think that so many people also wear that."

"Not everyone wears jewelry, but the wives and daughters of aristocrats."

"Where do we go now?"

"The best thing would be to find an inn to spend the night. Everything may look nice during the day, but at night it can get dangerous, the best thing would be to have a roof over our heads to sleep."

That was the idea or at least it was because due to lack of money, they could not stay in any inn, however, thanks to the nose of Little Nose, they arrived at a place where the innkeeper took pity on Dita and offered to sleep in the stable in exchange for goat cheese.

"I think I can turn the goat's milk into cheese, but you have to milk it, Dita."

"How do you plan to do that?"

"I'll use the witch's scrolls, but it's better if we go somewhere far away first, so no one can see us."

Once her privacy was assured, Dita took a bucket and a wooden seat out of her hump, then milked the goat.

"Come on, Dita, give me a little drink."

"First look for the right spell."

"I'll do it, but first give me some milk pretty please."

"All right, cuddle up, open that little mouth..."

Little Nose stood on two legs and Dita gave him a jet of goat's milk right in the middle of his mouth.

Dita smiling, started milking the goat again, hoping that by nightfall she would be able to sleep on very soft straw.
