I : We Meet

A blue-gray velociraptor paced back and forth throughout her cage, her heart pounding in her chest.

This was no ordinary velociraptor, though. Her name was Blue, and she was the last of her species. And she knew it.

Emotions coursed through her. She had no idea what to think. Here she was, trapped yet again by humans, stuck worrying about their unpredictable antics. But she was nervous for what she would see, who she would see. Why was she here? Where were the other dinosaurs? She could smell them. The scent of the ornithomimids she usually hunted teased her. She could practically taste their rich, meaty flavor that was so wonderfully different from the rats that Alpha had fed her.

Blue's curved hind claws tapped at the stone ground with growing impatience.

I've had enough of human enclosures, she thought.

She charged at the metal bars, her head clanging uselessly against them.

Ouch, she winced.

She peered outside of the cages' metal bars. In the darkness of the hallway, she noticed several enclosures. Inside them were the dinosaurs she had wondered about. Blue could see carnivores, piscivores, omnivores, and herbivores of all sizes and age. She glanced back into her cage and growled. There wasn't any food or water in her cage, and she might even be stuck here for hours. Noticing another wall that was opened with metal bars, she peered into that one. Her gaze was greeted with nothing but darkness, but she could scent something odd. Almost... familiar.

It carried the scent of a fellow velociraptor, but also a unique scent she recognized all too well. Blue tried to put a name to this hidden creature based off scent, but after a while she gave up and closed her eyes to sleep.

---

Jolted awake by a loud clang against the metal bars of her cage, Blue raised her head to the source of the noise. Once her eyes had adjusted to the darkness of the attached enclosure, she saw a creature in there. It was a male, and he was larger than her, and he blended in with the darkness. A gold stripe raced down his neck from luminous amber eyes.

He and her stared back at one another, curiousity and some hostility showing in both their postures. He had three long claws that he wrapped around the metal bars, and he managed to push some of his head through a gap. Blue hung back hesitantly instead, more hostility returning as she wondered if he was hungry, and was trying to grab at her like prey. Her lips curled in a snarl, her sharp white teeth showing in a way of saying: "Hey! back off."

He pulled back a little, but he remained by the metal bars, watching. Blue hissed and snapped her jaws in his direction. "I said back off! I don't trust you."

Oh right. She realized. He can't communicate with me, he's not a raptor--

"Sorry," he huffed. "I was only curious."

Blue froze. "You can communicate with me? But you aren't a velociraptor."

The odd dinosaur looked at her. "Can't we all communicate no matter what?" He questioned. Blue snorted in amusement, "you don't know very much, do you?"

He stepped into the only patch of light between the attached enclosures. Blue studied his features yet again. With a jolt, she realized he was quite raptor-like. But not completely. Some features of his reminded Blue of somebody so terrible and manipulative, though she couldn't remember her very well.

"Do you have a name?" Blue asked in an attempt to take her mind off her bad memories. The dark raptor-like dinosaur tipped his head to the side. "A name..? No, I don't think I have one." He paused as if he was thinking, then asked if she had a name.

"Yes. My name is Blue," she replied.

"Blue.." was all the raptor-like dinosaur said, as if he was trying out a new word. "That's a nice name," he added after a pause.

"Well, if you don't have a name, then what is your species?" She asked. He cocked his head to one side. "Species?" Blue could tell he was confused yet again. She stifled a growl of annoyance before responding. "Do you not know what that is?" She failed to keep the sharp tone out of her voice.

The male shook his head. Blue gave him an odd look. What's that supposed to mean? I know humans do that. I guess he's been around humans for a while. After all, he doesn't even know basic things!
"A species is like me being a velociraptor, some of those long-necked dinosaurs being brachiosaurs. Get it?"

"Yeah, I guess." He replied. "I think they call me "Indoraptor". They say that a lot when they're around me." The raptor-like dinosaur, Indoraptor, said. "But I'm not sure if that's a name or a species.."

"I'd say it's a species, since I'm a velociraptor, and you're an indoraptor." Blue pointed out. "But since you don't have a name, I'll just call you Indoraptor."

Indoraptor's amber eyes shone. "I like that."

She didn't respond. She turned around and peered at the outside of the cage. "Do you know how to get out of here?"  She asked him without turning around.

"No. I've never really cared."

Blue gave him a skeptical look. "Are you sure? Doesn't every creature dream of freedom once they're trapped?" She let the memories wrap around her mind. The human-made enclosure where she had lived, with her siblings.
Blue's yellow eyes shone with longing, just to have them back. She pushed away her sorrows and gazed at Indoraptor, waiting for an answer. Instead, he gazed back at her. "Are you alright?" He asked.

She simply just stared at him, no answer coming to her mind. "Yes," she forced out after a moment of remembering her long gone packmates, her siblings. Blue didn't doubt her answer, she felt okay. She was content with her life, but the grief kept biting back at her.
"Well," Blue started, turning to face him. "I'd love to get out of here, other than you."
Indoraptor looked crestfallen. "But I thought we we're friends."
Blue snorted. "We've only just met, and I don't even trust you all that much," she pointed out. He began to pace around after Blue when she had started to move about in her cage. "Why not?" He questioned, pushing a small part of his dark hard through the metal bars. "Why don't you trust me? I trust you."
She looked up at him. "You trust me?" Blue could tell that this odd dinosaur had no basic instincts. She thought it was odd, but she didn't press on it.
"Yes, I trust you," said Indoraptor. "Why don't you trust me?" He repeated the question yet again. Blue showed her teeth at him. "You remind me of somebody I met before who I didn't like."

He said nothing, much to Blue's relief. She couldn't be sure what the creature was who he reminded her of. She left the wall that seperated them and flopped down in the far corner, burying her face. All she wanted to do was sleep. There was no quality to this new life. Hungry, dehydrated, and bones aching, she fell asleep.

--

It was morning. At least, that's what Blue assumed. There was no sunlight in this human-made place for her to be sure. Her jaws gaped in a yawn and she stood up. Blue turned to the other corner, hoping to at least get a glance of Indoraptor. She wasn't sure why, but she felt some other emotion other than distrust towards this dinosaur.
But the Indoraptor wasn't in his enclosure, she realized. The wall was gone. He was in the other corner, still fast asleep.
She gulped. I don't trust him! He's gonna kill me, there's no other food in here.

She saw him twitch in his sleep. Then he rolled over onto his side, which seemed to wake him up. Indoraptor had awoke now. He blinked his gorgeous eyes in the dusty light. Then he got up on his four legs and looked over to Blue. "It's okay," he reassured her, noticing the fear in her posture. But Blue didn't move. She instead snarled at him. She remained hunched in the corner.
"I promise," he said. "I won't hurt you."
Beneath the fear, Blue realized that she was beginning to trust him. She felt something else, too. Something warm like admiration, or ease. She was charmed by him quite easily. She got up from her awkward corner hunch and went over to him. "Why are we together now?" Blue asked. Indoraptor glanced out the cage to a human who stood by a herbivore cage, poking at them. "The humans got rid of the wall," he explained. "I suppose they wanted us put together."
The human moved onto a few more enclosures, eventually reaching theirs. The male human dropped a chunk of some unknown meat into the cage. Indoraptor snapped at it, happy to finally have some food. Blue let out a hiss at him. "Hey!" She snarled. "I need some too!"
Indoraptor set down the chunk of meat and tore off half of it. He ate that half, and nudged the other half towards Blue with a long foreclaw. She took it off the hard floor and ate it quickly. She looked back up, hoping for more. But the human had left. Blue growled, watching the human walk away. She wanted to sink her claws into the flesh, to have a taste, to make the satisfaction of a successful hunt.
Being stuck in an enclosure wasn't ideal. Especially with some strange dinosaur.

Indoraptor was just finishing his meal. He had ate it messily, and wiped his tongue across his jaws to clean up the rest of the meat. "So," he began, looking towards her, now mischevious. "Want to get out of here?"
Blue's yellow eyes glowed. "Yes!" She exclaimed, jumping up. Indoraptor got up too. "I figured so," he said. "I'll show you."
