"Are... you alright?"
The question made Aubrey close her eyes, sighing. Wordlessly, she nodded as a reply. She watched as Lucas took his phone out and type something before putting it back in his pockets. He then stomped his way to Aubrey and grabbed her hand, pulling her up.
"We're going."
Aubrey noticed the slight glimmer in his eyes as he treaded his way to God-knows-where. She bit her lip, her internal scream being louder than the footsteps they were making. For a moment, Lucas' grip on her hand tightened, making her look up at the said boy with initial shock, before it turned into an addled expression.
His face wasn't visible to her, but somehow, she could imagine his hazel eyes staring blankly at the road, his eyebrows furrowed as he led her into an unknown destination. The silence around them stayed for a while until she caught a glimpse of the smoke that formed around his mouth. It was brief, but she saw how he parted his lips, the words that left it reaching her ears.
"I'm sorry."
It was unusual. Hearing him apologize in such a time made her emotions jump around frantically, running around with no idea how to react. They already resolved their previous conflict, so what's there to apologize about? She took a moment to clear her mind, before she asked, "For what?"
He glanced at Aubrey, his black hair covering his eyes. He inhaled deeply then stopped dead on his tracks. The winter wind blew past them, making his bangs sway. The streetlights finally illuminated his face, showing an expression that Aubrey can't decipher. "I'm sorry, because.... we won't be able to spend much time together."
His eyes gazed at Aubrey's, his lips forming a thin line. "I'm... planning on proposing to my girlfriend."
The silence returned, but this time, her internal scream suddenly died down, replaced by an agonizing pain in her heart. Upon hearing his words, she clasped her free hand on top of Lucas'.
Her feelings are irrelevant, she kept telling herself. But as she observed the thousand stars hidden in his orbs, she had to supress the thoughts inside her head. She had to bury those thoughts and lock them in the far corner of her mind, or else she'll end up interfering in someone's nearly immaculate world.
"Can you... help me?"
She hears his voice again as the air gradually gets still. She averts her gaze, looking at the dark sky decorated with the countless stars. She notices the crescent moon shining, giving the world some light. Without wasting a second, she looks down on Lucas' hand still wrapped around hers.
Their time together can't be fabricated. It will forever stay with them, the times when they toured around the globe, it's something that won't be forgotten. They spent almost their whole lives together, laughing, playing, having fun, doing whatever. Isn't that enough?
Besides, she knew that time will move on anyway. The hourglass is almost running out of sand, it's just now or never. She smiled, the pain that bugged her for months finally evaporating into the cool night with the thoughts that contaminated her mind.
As the night deepened, she looked up at Lucas, beaming.
"Sure. Anything for my best friend."
