chapter thirteen
"Well, there really is only one thing left to do." All eyes turned to Zatanna as the magician stood up abruptly and faced the rest of the group with her hands on her hips.
"What are you talking about?" Conner asked, mildly peeved that she was blocking his view of the movie.
Zatanna ignored him and turned to Wanda. "They don't trust you."
Wanda put on a look of shock and hurt, glancing over at the team.
"Z! Why-"
"She deserves to know." Zatanna shifted to face the team a bit more. "And like I was saying, there is really only one thing to do."
"Are you...are you kicking me off the team?"
"What? No! I'm talking about a mind link exercise." When all she got was confused looks in return, Zatanna sighed. "We all go into Wanda's mind, seeing her memories to get to know her better? Only if you allow us to, Wanda."
Wanda felt anxiety run through her. If she let them fully into her mind then...Wanda would just have to be careful, only showing them certain memories as a misdirect.
So she nodded. "I want you guys to trust me, so I will allow it."
Zatanna beamed at her. "Great, well, no time like the present. Everyone, sit on the floor in a circle." The others begrudgedly did as they were asked, sitting down in a circle. Zatanna looked over at Wanda. "Whenever you're ready."
Wanda nodded, closing her eyes to focus. She pulled the team into her mind via mind link, deciding to start with an early memory.
Inside Wanda's mind...
The team blinked, looking around when they saw an unfamiliar surrounding. They were standing inside a rundown home, watching as a scene played out in front of them.
A small girl, about five, was playing with a boy that looked strikingly like her.
Everyone turned to look at Wanda, who was staring at the pair of children with a fond smile. Artemis looked between Wanda and the two children, putting two and two together. "Wanda, is this you and Pietro?"
Wanda nodded, eyes never leaving her brother. "We are five here, at the orphanage. One of the more peaceful times in my life." Wanda's eyes darkened as the scene changed, the twins aging up. "But of course, like everything in my life, nothing good lasts long."
The twins were eight now and they weren't alone. A group of five men in pressed suits were surrounding them, frowns plastered on their faces.
"Children, please, we are trying to help you." One of the men spoke, approaching the two children while Pietro pushed Wanda behind him.
Wanda glared at the men, her eyes glowing scarlet. "Leave us be."
"So it is the girl." One of the other men grinned. "That will make this easier."
"Do not touch my sister." Pietro glared, stepping further in front of Wanda.
One of the men pulled out a small gun, firing two rounds at the twins and hitting both of them. They looked down in shock to see a needle sticking out of each of them.
"See? Didn't touch your sister."
The memory faded and the team looked at Wanda in a stunned silence as an inside of a laboratory materialized. Wanda flinched when she realized what this was.
Wanda, who was eleven in this, was sitting on a medical table in a hospital gown, glaring at the scientist in front of her. He ignored her, pointing at the screen to a lab technician.
Wanda smirked, raising a hand and aiming it at the two. She fired off a bolt of her powers, knocking them back. They turned to her in shock and outrage. "You will pay for that, girl."
Wanda raised her hand again, about to fire when the doors burst open and a group of burly men ran in, grabbing her arms and securing them in a straight jacket. She thrashed around, trying to fire more of her powers but finding she couldn't with her arms restrained.
She glared harder at the men, snarling at them. "I will kill you all. Release me at once!"
The scientist sneered at her, grabbing a hypodermic needle and injecting it in her neck.
The memory faded out and Artemis looked over at Wanda, pity in her eyes. "You were in a straight jacket for five years?"
Wanda narrowed her eyes as a similar scene appeared. "Not always."
Wanda was in a similar laboratory with two scientists, glaring down at the floor when they approached the thirteen year old with the all too familiar shock collar. They clipped it on her neck without much of a resistance, taking a step back with satisfied smirks.
"There, that should keep you in line." The scientist who clipped it on her snapped his fingers, pointing at the far wall. "Try and use your powers, let's see how well this works. Your brother is on the other side of that wall, get to him."
Wanda glowered at the men, eyes glowing scarlet before she let out a gasp, her body being shocked by an electrical impulse. The scientists grinned wider, writing something in their books.
"Come on, girl, don't you want to see your brother?" They taunted, laughing when her eyes lit up once more, a greater shock going through her. "Pathetic, can't protect herself or her brother."
Wanda snarled at them. "I'll show you pathetic."
Her hands began to glow, slowly working on undoing the straight jacket, working through the shocks that came from the collar. She had tears streaming down her face as she grit her teeth, finally managing to undo the jacket.
Wanda ripped it off herself, firing bolts at the scientists with her now free hands. They cowered in fear, Wanda raising them up in the air in a bubble of scarlet. She listened to their pleas, eyes narrowing at them. "Who is the pathetic one now?"
The scientists watched with wide eyes as Wanda, still keeping them encased in a bubble with one hand, turned to the wall with the other, firing bolt after bolt. She was drenched in sweat, tears falling freely down her face as the collar continuously shocked her.
Wanda let out an anguished cry as the shocks on her collar grew in intensity, forcing her to release the scientists and collapse to the ground in spasms. She lay there, convulsing for what felt like forever before the shocks stopped. Even then, she stayed still as the scientists wrapped her back up in the straight jacket, a lone tear falling down her cheek as she stared at the wall with an empty expression.
"Pietro..."
The scene faded out to the containment chamber that the team found her in, all eyes on their Wanda as she purposefully ignored their stares, glaring at her sixteen year old self in the chamber.
A new scientist, one the team recognized as the one from the night they rescued her, walked into the chamber. She stared down at Wanda, a look of pity on her face as she entered the chamber, crouching next to Wanda as she pulled out a needle. Wanda stared blankly ahead.
The scientist sighed, holding the needle over Wanda's exposed neck. "They don't want me to tell you this, but they are taking your brother to a different facility."
Wanda's eyes snapped up, glowing scarlet. A shock went through her as she growled at the woman before her. "What? That is not allowed. Bring me my brother!"
The scientist was blasted back as a wave of energy burst out of Wanda, making her drop the needle in the process of her scrambling out of the chamber, slamming the glass shut and pressing a button on it. Immediately, gas began to fill the chamber and Wanda screeched, waves of energy rolling off her before the gas took its affect and she passed out.
The scene faded and the team felt the familiar pull of being yanked out of her mind.
Mount Justice
Everyone blinked as they took in the surroundings of the mountain, all eyes falling on Wanda as she slowly opened her eyes. She looked around at the team, a sad smile coming on her face. "Do you see it now?"
"See what?"
"Everything I do, I do it for Pietro. To get him back, safe with me." Wanda sighed, blinking back her tears. "It is all for Pietro."
