Chapter 2

April rushed to get ready. She was relishing in her time spent in the Slytherin dorms and common room but even she knew that she'd have to leave soon and possibly even get sorted into a different house. April sighed. All of the Slytherins from the above years accepted her as if she was already a part of them - and of course, she did act exactly like all of the others did.

April was going to visit Diagon Alley to get her supplies with a man called Hagrid, who wasn't a teacher according to Dumbledore, but she was told that he was a very trustworthy man. Dumbledore said that Hagrid had someone to pick up on the way.

It wasn't long until she found herself in front of Dumbledore's office after being guided there by Professor Snape, who had aided most of her travels as he was the head of the Slytherin house. April was strangely fascinated by him and his manner, although it was clear that he was very intolerant of pretty much everyone.

"Go," Snape had told her with a curt nod towards the headmaster's office. April gave him a sparkling smile, her eyes twinkling. In response, he just rolled his eyes and walked away.

"Professor?" April called out as she knocked on the door softly. It looked so old and precious that she almost didn't want to hurt it by knocking too hard. Dumbledore granted her entry and April saw a rugged man with scraggy black hair with a matching beard by his side.

April grinned at them nervously.

"This is Hagrid," Dumbledore declared, waving a hand in the gruff man's direction. Hagrid simpered at April, who returned the somewhat nervous facial expression. "He will take you to Diagon Alley. First, he must pick up another student."

"Yeh don't mind waitin' fer a bit, do yeh?" Hagrid asked with a sheepish look about him, "I'll be back in 'bout half hour, is that alrigh'?"

April nodded vigorously. She went to leave again when Dumbledore called her back.

"If you don't mind, Miss Lockhart, I would like to speak with you," the old, greyed man said. April stood in front of him, waiting patiently.

"Yes, Professor?" She finally inquired after he didn't say anything.

"Today, you are going to meet a very... famous young boy," Dumbledore told April who's eyes widened, "Harry Potter. Have you heard of him?"

April shook her head.

"Well, April. I wouldn't want you to feel like you are just tagging along," Dumbledore muttered as he fiddled with some papers on his desk, "No matter how important Harry might become, you are still a phenomenal witch. There are some things you can do that not even Harry can yet."

The little brown-haired girl left after that. Pondering on the wise man's words, April found herself back in her Slytherin dormitory. She relaxed back onto her bed, staring at the ceiling. She stayed there until Hagrid came knocking on her door.

"C'mon, April!" He cheered, "We'll be goin' now."

April got up instantly and made her way to Hagrid. Harry Potter was next to him.

April looked at Harry curiously for a few moments. He had a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt across his forehead and he was wearing large, dirty glasses. She was intrigued already but from the look he was giving her, it seemed like he didn't really want to be her friend.

A Little While Later

"Welcome, Harry, April, to Diagon Alley," Hagrid announced, looking around at the street packed with people and crowded shops. Harry and April both stepped forward in fascination, their heads turning at every interesting person, animal or shop. They were lost in a massive herd of wizards and witches but Hagrid was unmissable with his height. They explored further down the street.

Hagrid was like a tour guide, telling them this and that about what they would get in each shop, "Here's where you'll get yer quills and yer ink, and o'er there all yer bits and bobs for yer wizardry!"

They soon entered a different store and a boy started speaking to Harry about a broomstick he called the Nimbus 2000. Of course, both April and Harry were hesitant to ask, but Harry finally popped the question, "But, Hagrid, how are I to pay for all this? I haven't got any money."

Hagrid chuckled to himself and pointed at one of the tallest shops there. The pale pillars holding it up were slightly askew and towered over Harry and April who were only eleven. They both stared up at it in awe as Hagrid announced, "Well there's yer money, Harry. Gringotts, the wizard bank. T'aint no place safer, 'kept perhaps Hogwarts. You too, April."

April and Harry followed Hagrid into the building and were instantly impressed. It was shining and golden. The light hanging from the ceiling must've been twice the size of them both and it gave the room a bright glow. The strangest thing about it was the tiny creatures working at each large, black desk that stood high above April and Harry's heads.

Harry leaned in closer to Hagrid and mumbled something along the lines of, "Uh, Hagrid, what exactly are those things?"

April zoned out of the conversation. She wasn't uninterested, she was just fascinated by the creatures working away with piles of papers and the intricacy of the building; her emerald eyes caught onto every detail, the marble of the pillars either side of every desk and the large black and white circles on the floor being some of her favourites. The only thing she heard from the rest of Harry and Hagrid's discussion was that the goblins - April overheard that too - weren't particularly friendly, so it was best to stay close to Hagrid.

April pretty much spaced out until they got to her vault.

"This is yer branch of yer family's bank, April," Hagrid told her as he helped her and Harry out of the Gringotts cart for the second time, "Yer dad put a lot of 'is money in here, actually. Dumbledore said he doesn' have anything to do with yeh anymore, but he did all this."

April just nodded solemnly. She stepped inside the vault and saw a fair share of golden coins. Collecting five bags full, pocketing some and giving Hagrid the rest, they left. They got back outside. April finally decided to speak, "We need... wands, right?"

Hagrid replied, "A wand? Well, yer'll want Ollivanders. No place better! Run along there, I'll wait. I just got one more thing I got to do. Won't be long."

April and Harry headed to Ollivanders, neither of them uttering a word to each other. It was almost as if they already had some sort of unspoken rivalry. Entering at the same time, they shared a look of enchantment and mesmerisation. After Harry called out to see if anyone was there, they heard a few clunking noises and a man with wild hair appeared. He began speaking to Harry and April began to wander. She understood why Dumbledore had spoken to her - everyone knew Harry Potter.

She trembled in the bitter coldness of the store and the darkness looked as if it was going to attack her any second, but April continued her journey down one of the several aisles. Each was jam-packed with shelves full of wands, all in individual boxes of different colours. She settled at the end of one of the aisles, picking up a box from the top of the stack.

She lifted up the wand made of ash wood with a unicorn hair core. A few of the nearby wands flew off the shelves, and in a panic she threw the wand back into its box and placed it back on the shelf carefully. April heard footsteps. Ollivander himself was stood beside her; his knowledgeable blue eyes seemed to be pondering something. Suddenly, he spoke, "I know just the thing for you!"

April awaited his return. He didn't take long. He had a dark green box in his hand and when he was close enough, he handed it to her. April gulped as she took the beautiful wand out of its box but when she did, a flash of light came out of it and the wands that were previously on the floor after the last one she tried went back to their original places.

"Aha," Ollivander commented, "I see. This wand is 11 inches, vine wood. This type of wood is rather rare... These wands typically choose witches and wizards who are more than meets the eye. And a phoenix feather! They are most extraordinary. They are very difficult to tame, I must warn you, Miss Lockhart, and can perform some of the most outstanding magic. In fact, Mr Potter was just selected by a wand of the same core. It is also the core of a wand to a very powerful wizard, very powerful indeed..."

April turned to see Harry's reaction, but he was gone. After thanking Ollivander and paying for the wand, she went outside. Hagrid was stood there with Harry by his side, his eyes scanning the shop. Hagrid spotted her and said, "There yeh are, April!"

"Hagrid, what powerful wizard has a wand with the core of a phoenix feather?" April almost whispered into the air. Harry's light green eyes snapped to April due to the fact that he, as Ollivander had said, had gotten a wand of the same core.

"Why, I..." Hagrid went to reject the young girl when he saw the undying curiosity in her pale mossy eyes. His voice got so much quieter that Harry and April had to lean in to listen, "You-Know-Who."

"You-Know-Who?" April repeated, confused.

"The wizard that killed my parents..." Harry mumbled. April gave him a sympathetic glance but he'd turned away and had seen the owl store, Eeylops Owl Emporium. That was when April noticed that Harry already had a snow-white owl in his hand.

"Hagrid, can I get something?" April asked as she spotted Magical Menagerie, the shop that sold all sorts of pets.

"Of course yeh can!" Hagrid replied, and that was when April entered the never-ending spiral of shopping for Hogwarts supplies.
