Steve Rogers- Lane of Memory
Requested by Luna_Ultear_Maximoff. Hope you enjoy!
You had been a member of the team for a long time now. You were friends with pretty much everyone, especially your partner; the one and only Captain America. The two of you were almost inseparable. Whenever you weren't training with him, you could be found teaching him the ways of the twenty first century. Even in battle, you always had each other's backs. With all the time you spent together, you could feel yourselves falling in love.
...
There had been a tough mission. The team had been sent to chase down a lead on Red Skull but it had been a trap. You fought against the onset of Hydra agents but during the skirmish, you noticed one of them sneaking up on Steve.
"Cap, watch out!" you called. Before the agent could attack, you jumped between them. They hit you hard in the head and badly injuring you.
"Y/N!" Steve quickly took care of the assailant before tending to you. You held on for as long as you could but everything became muffled and faded to black.
...
When you opened your eyes, bright lights blinded you. Slowly, your eyes adjusted to the light and you could open them fully. Turning your head, you could see an unfamiliar blond man sitting beside you. You tried to speak to him but your voice was hoarse and felt so dry. The man finally looked at you.
"You're awake! Jarvis call the others and tell them that Y/N is finally awake," he said to the ceiling.
"Right away sir," a voice said out of nowhere.
"How are you feeling?" You held your throat to try and indicate that you couldn't speak. The man quickly got you a glass of water and helped you to sit up.
"Where... where am I?" you asked after you had finished your water.
"You're in the hospital wing of the tower. You got hit in the head on our last mission," he explained.
"Oh... who am I?" The man looked hurt at those three words. Before he could say anything, a group of people burst into your room making you feel overwhelmed. The blond shooed the others out after explaining to them the situation in a low voice. They all gave you sympathetic looks before leaving. You were starting to get worried.
"What's going on?" you asked. Once again, he was interrupted by a doctor coming to check on you. He looked at your head wound and asked you a few questions before coming to a diagnosis; amnesia.
...
A few weeks had passed since you woke up. The doctor had told you that amnesia wasn't anything to be afraid of. He said that your memories weren't actually gone, just locked away and that once a week you should go under what they called 'reality orientation therapy'. They also recommended that you have someone to support you until your memories finally returned. Fortunately, the man you came to know as Steve offered to help. Steve showed you to your room in the tower and gave you a tour of the place. He also introduced you to everyone that lived there. It could be exhausting at times but slowly you were readjusting to your old life again and if ever you got lost in the huge tower or forgot someone's name, Steve was there to help you. Everyone would joke that he was your guide down memory lane and in a sense, they were kind of right. Everyday Steve would provide you with a piece of the puzzle that was your memory. Your favourite food, a song you liked, a place you went to when you were feeling down, they all helped to form the big picture. Aside from the occasional headache, things were slowly getting back to normal. For a while at least, things were blissful.
...
It was an ordinary day at the tower and everything seemed normal. You were watching a movie with Steve when the alarm went off. He jumped up and went to get ready for action when you grabbed his arm.
"I want to go with you."
"Y/N, we've talked about this. It's still too dangerous. You're still retraining and you still haven't got all your memories back."
"Steve, please..."
"No, Y/N! You already got hurt once because of me! I care about you too much and I won't let it happen again!" Stunned, you let go of his arm and watch him walk away. You mulled his words in your mind over and over again. Steve really cared about you? Well, he cared about everyone... right? You started thinking about everything he had done for you. Steve had spent so much time with you piecing your memories back together, sat by your side when you were unconscious, listened to your dumb stories about training with Clint and Sam... Wait. You hadn't trained with either of them since that mission... The one where the agent smacked you in the head! A sudden migraine overcame you as all your remaining memories came flooding back. You couldn't wait to tell everyone!
...
It was many hours before the others came home. The moment you saw Steve, you ran up and hugged him.
"Y/N? Are you okay? Did something happen while we were gone?" he asked, hugging you back.
"Steve, I remember everything! I remember training with Clint and Sam. I remember all our movie nights. I remember that mission and I took the hit for you because I love you!" You suddenly blushed at what you had blurted out. One thing you had remembered for sure was that you and Steve were partners. You certainly hadn't admitted your feelings for him.
"You... you love me?" Blushing, you nodded. Right now you wanted the earth to swallow you up.
"I love you too, Y/N." You looked up at him surprised.
"Really?" He nodded with a faint blush. Feeling bold, you stood on your toes and pressed your lips to his. Steve was a little surprised at first but he slowly kissed back. In the end, losing your memories was the best thing that could have happened to you because it was just the thing to start a beautiful relationship.
