Chapter 12 - The Age Of Not Believing
The boys and I escorted the newly captured Dark Anomaly to Star Command, entering the shuttle station and taking a ship to their headquarters up in space.
I had to admit, if I wasn't so worried about what that creature could try to pull on us, I would seriously be enjoying the amazing view right about now.
Ben was focusing on his magic, keeping the energy sphere up and running so the Dark Anomaly wouldn't get away. It had its arms crossed, pouting in defeat.
"You doing okay Ben?" I asked him with concern. "You're not tired, or anything?"
"Believe me Ava, keeping this thing up is almost sucking the life out of me. I'm actually amazed I've been able to keep this thing locked up for so long." Ben breathed, wiping the sweat off of his forehead with his free hand.
I sulked a little, seeing the state he was in. I looked around the shuttle, finding a cuby hole next to my seat. I pulled out a face cloth, carefully raising it up and wiping the blonde's forehead and hair.
"Better?"
"A little bit, thanks." He smiled. "I needed that."
"No problem." I smiled back.
"To answer your other question," Sebastian spoke up as he stepped into the seating area from the washroom. "Ben is one of the top ranking Disney Wizards in Defensive Magic."
"Really?" my eyes widened, looking astonished.
"Yep! And this isn't the only time he's caught a category three Dark Anomaly either." The British boy added, taking his seat across from me and Ben.
"Aw come on Seb, don't make sound all high and mighty. I'm just a regular Wizard like everybody else in this organization." Ben defended, rubbing the back of his neck.
"One of the greats though." The brunette boy complimented. He waved his hand over in my direction, the two of us leaning forward so our faces were inches apart as he whispered, "He's shy when he gets praised."
"I heard that!" Ben spoke up, glaring at the boy. "And I do not."
"Yes, you do, you're blushing like a bloody tomato man!" Sebastian smirked, crossing his arms as he slouched back in his seat.
I moved back into mine, turning my head back to face the blonde Wizard. "So how did you catch the first one? If you don't mind me asking."
"Oh gosh, it's kind of funny actually." Ben chuckled, rubbing his eyes.
"But not quite, 'ha, ha' funny." Sebastian reminded, using air quotes.
"How come? What happened?" I asked with worry.
"Well you see, there's another Wizard me and Sebastian are friends with, her name is Kaitlyn. She's a Illusion Wizard, just like the 'guy who shall not be named'. Anyways, it was her first day as a Wizard so Sebastian thought it would be a good idea to take her out to dinner." Ben began.
"Just pointing out!" Sebastian raised his hand. "It was NOT a date!"
"It sure looked like one." Ben raised a brow.
"I was just trying to be nice! She invited me, I thought it would give her a chance to get to know me and the rest of the gang! But of course, nobody else could make it." Sebastian grumbled.
"Because the rest of the team was out on patrol because we picked up a signal." Ben narrowed his eyes in reply.
"Hey, hey, hey, calm it down you guys." I eased, stepping between them. The Dark Anomaly creature inside the green bubble snickered at their bickering. I turned my head, shooting a glare at the thing. "You, shut up." It pouted again as I turned my head back, looking over at Ben. "You, keep talking."
Ben shook his head, shaking it off before continuing the story. "Anyway, we followed the signal and it turns out, the Dark Anomaly was infecting the kitchen appliances at the same restaurant Seb and Kaitlin were at."
"That doesn't sound too bad." I replied slowly.
"Yeah, except the appliances he took control of were knives and all those sharp stuff." Sebastian added with a blunt look on his face.
"Anyways, so we get there and--"
Before Ben could continue the story, there was rumbling around the ship as a electrical chime sounded.
"Shuttle 2B has been docked."
"That would be us." Sebastian clarified with a loud sigh as he stood up.
Oh well. I guess the story will have to wait for another day. But what was with Ben and Sebastian? I've never seen the two of them so tensed and angry with each other before. Something big must have happened for them to snap at each other like that.
Ben got up as well, using his powers to move the energy sphere to his will. I followed them out of the shuttle and into the docking bay. Outside the ship waiting for us was Buzz Lightyear, Commander Nebula, and a squad of the LGMs.
"Commander Nebula, Captain Lightyear." Ben greeted, he and Sebastian saluting. "Thank you for having us."
"At ease Wizards, it's our pleasure." The Commander nodded.
The boys lowered their hands as the three of us and the sphere walked over to them. Commander Nebula examined the sphere closely, watching the Dark Anomaly inside.
"A category three, impressive work Ben. I haven't seen one since..." He spoke in awe.
"Since that day, we know." Ben reminded, his voice seeming on edge.
Buzz took a look at it as well before finally turning his gaze on to me. He looked surprised at first, but calmed himself as he extended his hand towards me.
"You must be the Chosen One, in the flesh at last. My name is Lightyear, Buzz Lightyear." He greeted.
"Avalyn Macht, nice to meet you Buzz. I'm a huge fan!" I replied, shaking his hand as I smiled at the space ranger.
"I'm glad to hear that." Buzz smiled back. "How are you settling in with this world? Used to it yet?"
I shrugged at the man, rolling my eyes a little bit. "I'm getting there, but not quite yet. There's still so much to see and do here."
"That's a good point." He agreed, crossing his arms.
"Let's finish up with the formalities later Lightyear." Commander Nebula spoke up. "Let's get this thing to the lab and find out what makes this thing tick." He pointed over at the creature inside Ben's energy ball.
"Have you guys done this before?" I asked them, raising a brow.
The group left the docking bay, proceeding into through the halls of Star Command. The squad of LGM's carried the orb containing the Dark Anomaly, allowing Ben to ease up on how much energy he was using.
"We've done research with different anomalies, but nothing like this." Commander Nebula explained.
"But, what about the first category three you guys captured--?"
"It... escaped." Ben spoke up in interruption. "We don't really like to talk about it that much."
"Yeah." Sebastian agreed with a mumble, stuffing his hands into his pants.
"Oh..." I replied nervously.
I was worried I had struck a nerve between the two boys. I didn't want them to tear each other about all because of me.
Well, another problem for another time. Right now, we had bigger fish to fry.
We entered the main labratory, and upon entry I could already hear the rambling of someone assuming command, ordering another group of LGM's around.
"Now place that here, and then re-calibrate the systems here... hey, hey, hey! Do you want the console to overheat and catch fire?!"
The scientist was a white feathered, slender, elderly, half bald duck, wearing a light brown suit with a pink dress shirt underneath. He wore tiny glasses, and a pocket watch was stuffed into his pocket.
"Wait, is that--?"
The duck had beaten me to it. Upon hearing my voice, he zipped right on over to us, saluting in the presence of Commander Nebula and Buzz Lightyear.
"Commander, Captain Lightyear, we are ready to proceed!"
"Good work Professor." The commander complimented. "Get right on it."
"Yes sir, Ludwig Von Drake at your service!" He saluted once more. "Bring the ruffian over here."
The little LGM's carried the energy orb containing the Dark Anomaly across the room, following the professor towards a giant tube like capsule container. They placed the orb inside before powering the capsule on, imprisoning it. Once that was complete, Ben finally disabled the energy sphere, but he nearly collapsed to the ground.
Sebastian and Buzz just managed to catch him, helping the boy up to his feet.
"I'm fine. I've been through worse." He assured.
"At least let Ava heal you." Sebastian replied with a stern look on his face. "You're looking awful pale."
Ben sighed, rubbing his eyes. "Yeah, alright."
I raised a steady hand, placing it on his head. My hand glowed a light pink, the light shading over his head and the rest of his body, as I worked my magic to help make him better.
After a few moments, I pulled my hand away, and Ben straightened himself up without the aid of those around him, shaking his head as he ruffled his hair.
"You doing okay?" I asked him with worry.
"Yeah, I needed that. Thanks." he thanked me.
"You can't keep doing this to yourself Ben. Even with all of the extra training you're doing, you're always expelling too much of your energy." Buzz cautioned.
"I know. But I have to keep training to strengthen my powers, that way I can keep up with the Dark Anomalies and contain them." Ben growled, forming his hand into a fist.
"Extra training?" I spoke up, seeming confused.
"So far Ben has been the only Wizard to ever actually capture and contain a Dark Anomaly. Others who have attempted to do so have either sustained serious injuries or were killed." Buzz explained with grief.
"That's why I took it upon myself to excel in my training." Ben breathed in and out heavily. "It may seep my energy every time I do it, but it's worth it."
"Lightyear, Wizards! Ludwig has found something!" Commander Nebula called.
Me and the others made our way to the center of the room, regrouping with the others as Ludwig typed in a few things into the main computer that connected itself to the capsule.
"What did you find Professor?" Buzz asked the duck.
"Well, according to my findings, this Dark Anomaly possess things such as Dark Matter, Negative Energy, basically any evil components." he began.
"But that's what the Dark Anomalies are made of, we already figured that out a long time ago." Sebastian replied.
"That is true, but this one however, a category three Dark Anomaly, possesses a special ingredient that none of the other Dark Anomalies I've researched has had before." Ludwig went on.
"And that would be, what exactly?" Buzz asked, waving his hand in confusion.
The duck glanced over at the space ranger before taking his glasses off dramatically and looking at the group straight in the eye. "Undead Magic."
Once he said that, the entire room went silent. All of the LGM's froze, looking at him as Buzz, Nebula, and the boys mouths were gaped open in complete shock.
I looked over at them, a look of surprise at my face. This had to be really important, or really bad, or maybe even both, to make everyone react like this.
"So... Undead Magic?" I repeated for clarification.
"Yes miss, precisely!" Ludwig raised a finger, nodding like a madman. "Since this one contains a pinch of Undead Magic, then this could be a clue as to where they are coming from. And at the moment, the only logical location I can predict would be..."
"The Underworld..." Sebastian spoke up. "It's the birth place of Undead Magic and everything in between."
"Correct Mr. Harris!" The professor replied.
"So the Underworld, eh?" Commander Nebula cupped his chin.
"LGM's, access the Prison files. See if you can find any matches on the database can anyone who uses Undead or Dark Magic." Buzz commanded.
"We're searching through it as we speak." One of them spoke up, typing away at a datapad before handing it over to him. "Here are a list of suspects."
"Alright, let's see here..." Buzz murmured as me, Ben, and Sebastian crowded around him, scanning a peek at the list. "Maleficent's in salutary confinement in Federal Prison, her magic was taken away from her."
"The Horned King maybe?" Sebastian suggested.
"Nah, he's been in prison for years on end. His power's completely drained by now." Buzz waved it off.
"What about Chernabog? He has a similar power." Ben pointed out.
"Hmm maybe. But he's in a maximum security cell, slipped into stasis. He's been in dormant for years." Buzz explained.
"Well you know what they say, evil never rests." Ben countered.
"True... Alright, send a message to the prison and let them know to double security and to monitor his vitals. See if there's any spike in his dormant." Buzz ordered.
"Yes sir!" The LGM saluted as he ran out of the room.
As the boys continued to go through the list, I stepped to the side, doing some thinking of my own. If the Dark Anomaly contains Undead Magic, and is speculated to possibly come from the Underworld, who do we know that is FROM the Underworld?
After a few moments of thinking, I snapped my fingers, spinning around. "I got it!"
That seemed to catch the boys attention as they all looked up towards me.
"Got what?" Ben asked.
"I figured out a suspect!" I answered. "What about, Hades?"
"Hades?" Ben questioned, raising a brow.
"Yeah, Hades. This thing supposedly came from the Underworld right? Well, he lives there doesn't he? Surely he has to know something about all of this." I speculated.
"Hmm, well..." Buzz cupped his chin. "Hades was placed under house arrest instead of being sent to prison. Villain or not, we need him to run the Underworld. We usually have guards to monitor his whereabouts. But..."
"But?" Sebastian repeated the word with worry.
"But we haven't heard from them for a couple days. We've been experience some interference with the signal between here and the Underworld. It's happened before, but not like this." Buzz explained.
"Oh great..." Ben grumbled, face palming.
"So, I got it right?" I predicted, raising my hands with a shrug.
"Maybe. But there's just one problem, that could either support your theory and crush it completely." The blonde replied.
"And that would be, what exactly?" I asked him.
"There's no way to get to Underworld. Not anymore anyways." He answered.
"Why not?" I questioned.
"I can answer that!" Ludwig spoke up. "To ensure Hades' house arrest to be a success, Zeus destroyed the portal to the Underworld. That way no one gets in or out."
"Then what about the people who were supposed to guard him? Report him and stuff." I reminded.
"Do you remember Hades little henchmen?" Sebastian asked me.
"Wait, they work for us now?" My eyes widened with shock.
"When Hades was arrested, they issued an abuse report. So in return for their safety, they're tasked with monitoring his activity for us, while staying in the Underworld forever." Sebastian explained.
"Dang... Hey, is there a way for us to get to the Underworld? Find out what's going on down there?" I suggested.
"Since Zeus destroyed the portal? Not exactly." Ben answered.
"We'll figure that out. Ludwig, continue your research on the Dark Anomaly." Commander Nebula ordered. "Wizards, it's getting late. I believe you three should head on out, especially you Chosen One."
"And you too Ben." I added, looking over at the blonde.
"Ava, I'm fine now, really. Your magic cured me." he assured.
"We're not taking any chances. You even said so yourself; You want to put in some extra training, to not let anyone down. You won't be able to do that, unless you get some rest. A very long rest." I stated, placing my hands on my hips.
"I'd say you do what she says mate." Sebastian agreed with her.
Ben looked between his British friend, Buzz who nodded in agreement, and finally over to me. He sighed in defeat before nodding his head. "Alright, I'll sleep in tomorrow."
"Good boy." I teased, patting him on the head.
"I'm not a puppy you know!" He replied as he and Sebastian followed me out of the room.
"You might as well be!" I remarked with a snicker.
"Come on, we know a faster way for you to get back." Sebastian spoke up, taking the lead.
I followed him and Ben through the halls of the Star Command Headquarters. The three of us entered a room that was pretty much empty for the most part, but at the end of the room there was a giant teleportation device that looked like something out of Star Trek.
Why doesn't Star Wars have any teleportation devices?
"This device can drop you off anywhere in the real world." Sebastian explained. "Pass me your Kimunicator, I can type in the coordinates of the jump."
"Got'cha." I stepped up on the platform, pulling the Kimuncator from my pocket as I tossed Sebastian the device.
He plugged it in to the console, and began typing away.
While we waited, Ben crossed his arms, coughing as he looked up at me.
"Hey Ava?"
"Yeah?" I looked over at him.
"Since we were talking about past events and such earlier," He recalled. "Is it alright if I ask you something?"
"Um, sure thing Ben." I replied slowly, looking a little confused. "What's up?"
"Remember the day you first came to the World of Disney and when you first met Sebastian and Mushu got all defensive, you told him you had a boyfriend, right?" He reminded.
"Hey... yeah, I remember that! You mentioned something like that, didn't you Ava?" Sebastian perked up, looking up at me.
"Um... Yeah, I did. Why? Is there something wrong?" I asked them with concern.
"Well, you know how the Disney Wizards have the rule of Wizards not being able to date other Wizards?" Ben began.
"Yeah?" I replied, raising a brow.
"Well, putting all of this together, it made me think..." Ben continued, looking a bit uneasy. He let out a deep sigh before finally looking up at me, clear in the eyes. "Is your boyfriend a Disney Wizard?"
There was silence in the room as I flinched.
"Wait, what? I... I don't know. I don't think so. I've known the guy since we were in elementary school. He's never been to the Disney parks before. He would have, he would've told me. So, I guess right now I'm gong to have to say no, he's not a Wizard." I answered.
"Okay, I just... wanted to make sure." Ben replied. "No such thing as being too cautious."
"Right..." I nodded with understanding.
I lowered my gaze to the floor, my mind deep in thought. He could't, could he? Could Santiago actually be a Disney Wizard? But... he's never lied to me about anything. He's the most honest man I know.
"Got it!" Sebastian spoke up. "Coordinates are set."
He unplugged the Kimunicator from the console, tossing the device back over to me as he powered the teleporter on.
"We'll give you call once we hear an update on getting to the Underworld." Ben assured.
"Alright. See you guys later." I waved.
They waved back at me as the teleporter kicked in, making me vanish from the room instantly.
"Why did you do that?" Sebastian immediately asked the blonde as he stalked over to him. "You could have blown it!"
"I just had to make sure, that's all." Ben answered, his face looking blank.
"Make sure of what?" Sebastian asked.
"That he didn't tell her anything about all of this in the real world." Ben answered.
Sebastian sighed, placing his hands on his hips. "So, if she says she doesn't know anything, we're good than, right?"
"I suppose so." Ben replied, a small smile creeping up on his face. "Even after everything that happened, he's still being a true Wizard, until the end."
"But you do realize we may need him to come back, right?" Sebastian reminded. "What's Mickey or The Man going to say when he does?"
"When that time comes, that time comes. We can't rush this Seb." Ben cautioned.
"But we've got an incredible lead! We could be one step closer to ending all of this craziness once and for all!" Sebastian stated.
"Maybe, maybe not. We won't know for sure until I go to the Underworld ourselves." Ben countered.
"Wait, you told her and me that we're all going." Sebastian reminded, circling his finger at himself and Ben for effect.
"I know, but the Underworld is dangerous. Someone in this team has to scout it out." Ben grinned as he turned around, making his way for the door.
Sebastian watched him leave before he began to shake his head, chuckling as he jogged after the blonde. "You are one stubborn boy."
