Chapter 3
*not edited*
Carlos
I woke up to a ringing sound. It was my alarm sounding that it was time to get up. I turned off the alarm on my phone and flopped back into my bed. I really didn't want to go to Orientation. But I had to; I had to follow the plan and spy on the daughter of Rapunzel. I quickly got dressed in the school uniform god it was horrid. Blue jacket, white collared shirt, blue and silver tie, tan colored pants and black shoes. I looked at myself in the mirror and gagged. I looked like another member of a royal family. I quickly put on my red biker gloves, loosened my tie, partially un-tucked my shirt and added my spike bracelet for good measure. Now at least I didn't look like some preppy kid. I heard groaning from Davyn's room I saw him emerge from his room in his pajamas.
"Carlos what are you...Why are you dressed like that?" It was my roommate Davyn son of Hans the banished prince of the Southern Isles.
"Orientation, are you an idiot?" I asked
"No, you have to have more respect for a royal though." Davyn said with a sneer smile
"I'm sorry your majesty." I said mockingly "Talk to me when you actually take over a kingdom and have a crown on your head." I said walking out. I hated Davyn he was so full of himself. I walked down the hallway of the Beach House's boy's area. I walked over to the elevators and waited for one to come along with two other guys. One of the guys had brown hair tied in a short ponytail. He also had one of ears pierced and was talking to another guy who looked very annoyed. The annoyed guy had black hair and blue eyes.
"So I signed up to be the other assistant librarian along with Riley." The ponytail guy said
"Cool," The Black haired guy said
"Come on Tobin you have to be jealous. We all know you've had a crush on the Princess of Corona since kindergarten. The ponytail guy obnoxiously said. My ears perked up, so the first place I had to go was the library.
"No I don't, you do, and you totally do. I forgot something, bye Jakob." Tobin said
"Bye," Jakob said. Thankfully the elevator doors opened and I stepped inside and just my luck so did the Jakob guy.
"Who are you?" Jakob asked eyeing my hair. Ok dude I know it's white that's just who I am, I thought.
"Carlos." I answered simply and shortly
"What grade are you in?" Jakob asked this guy was starting to annoy me I was wondering if this Tobin guy actually forgot something.
"Freshman."
"Hey I'm freshman too, maybe we'll be in the same classes." He said checking himself out in the mirror.
"Yeah, cool." I said I little taken back by this 14 year old checking himself in a mirror. The elevator doors slid open and I walked out as quickly as I could.
"Bye." Jakob said. I nodded in response and quickly hurried to the library where I saw a girl with medium-length brown hair entering the library. I took my phone out of my pocket and looked at the photo my mom sent me. It was her all right; I passed the stone lions at the bottom of the concrete steps and tried to act natural as I entered through the glass doors after Riley.
Riley POV
I took a deep breath of morning air before I walked into the doors of the library. Breathing in the icy cold AC, I walked up to the head librarian.
"Hi, I'm Riley I signed up to be one of the assistant librarians for the school year." The head librarian was a small woman with reddish hair with a gray dress and matching heels.
"Hello I'm Ms. Jane, Follow me I'll lead you to your desk." She lead me to a small corner where two small black desks stood side by side with two matching office chairs.
"Yours is on the right, your first job is too shelve the books I put on your book cart, good luck." She said as she walked away. I put my book bag on my desk and started to shelve the books when a boy approached me.
"Hey Riley." I turned around to see Jakob the son of Jim Hawkins standing in front of me. His long brown hair fell over his ember eyes. Even though Jakob was strong and muscular he was a total jerk.
"Hey Jakob, you don't strike me as the type of person who's really into reading or working for that matter." I said avoiding eye contact.
"Yeah I thought I would work here when I'm not lifting weights and stuff." He said flexing his muscles. "Oh and Riley you look really cute in your uniform by the way."
I sighed everyone was supposed to be in uniform for orientation week. Right now I was dressed in a white button down shirt that was tucked into my tan colored skirt, I also wore a blue tie with silver accents and a blue blazer with the school crest and silver buttons. Jakob was wearing the same thing except he was wearing pants.
"Thank you, well I have to get back to work now." I said half running to the other side of the library.
I was pushing my little cart of books around the library trying to avoid Jakob when someone tapped me on the shoulder.
"Hi," It was a boy with brown eyes and white hair with black roots. He was in his school uniform except his tie was a little loose and his shirt was not tucked in also he wasn't wearing his blazer. I never seen him before, he must be one of the villain kids.
"Are you working here?" he asked
"Umm yes," I replied
"Great, I'm looking for a book on lacrosse." He said
"Ok, follow me." I said leading him down the many shelves of books, till we reached a shelf near one of the windows.
"What kind of book are you looking for?" I asked turning toward the large shelf and scanning the book spines.
"Just one about the basic rules of lacrosse." He replied
"Alright," I said handing him a black book inscribed in gold Beginners Book to Lacrosse.
"Thanks," He said taking the book and flipping through the pages.
"Are you trying out for the team?" I asked him
"Yeah, tryouts are in two days, but I don't know a single rule of lacrosse." He said, "So I'm studying up."
"Smart," I said,
"You should tryout." He said looking up from the book.
"Well maybe I will, if I could actually do a sport." I said laughing a little. He laughed
"I'm Carlos." He said holding out his hand
"Riley," I said taking his hand and giving it a firm shake
"Well Riley I'll see you around." He said turning around and walking away, her looked back at me for a split second. I gave him a small wave and continued to push the book cart till I reached the assistant librarian's desks.
"Who was that?" Jakob asked approaching me from behind
"Oh Carlos I think he's in our grade." I said clocking out at my desk, all the library assistants who are students are supposed to leave by 4:30.
"I know who he is Riley, he's one of the villain kids." Jakob said, "I can't believe the board wants to give these villains a second chance."
"I think it's a great idea." I said turning to face Jakob "I'll see you later."
"Well. I." Jakob stuttered, I just ignored him and walked out of the library into the late afternoon sun.
NEXT DAY
Claire POV
My alarm woke me up at six-thirty orientation started a seven-thirty. I practically rolled off my bed and walked groggily to my bathroom. I washed my face and brushed my teeth. I walked into my closet and put on my uniform. I sat down at my vanity put on my makeup and brushed my hair and pulled it into a side braid. I grabbed my green school bag and walked into the living room/kitchen area. Riley was already up and dressed, she was sitting on the couch eating a blueberry muffin and reading a book.
"Hi," I said picking off a piece of muffin and popping it into my mouth.
"Hey, ready to go?" Riley asked
"Yeah, can we pick up some coffee first?" I said
"Yeah sure." She said stuffing her book in her purple book bag. We both walked out our door and down to the elevators. There was no one around probably because it was so early. But today was when all of the other older students arrived because of sports team tryouts tomorrow. Melody and some of the older children who have siblings that are incoming freshmen were already at the school just basically hanging out in the town all day, while the rest of the younger siblings had orientation. Riley and I rode the elevator down and walked to the dormitory cafeteria where they had a coffee, tea, and hot chocolate bar. Riley got English breakfast tea while I got a vanilla latte. We walked over to the school's main entrance, entered through the large glass doors and walked to the auditorium where all the new freshmen were meeting for a welcoming ceremony.
"What special classes are you taking?" I asked Riley as we sipped our drinks on the steps leading to the auditorium.
"Let's see," She said looking at her schedule. "I'm taking Princess training, kingdom ruling, and magic powers.
"Cool, I'm taking the same but I'm also doing chorus." I said as I finished my coffee and threw it in a trash barrel next to us.
"Did you get to walk around the campus yet?" I asked Riley
"No just around the buildings and down to the coffee shop, also I got to walk along the beach next to the coffee place." She said
"That's my favorite place in the whole entire campus!" I said excitedly
"When are swimming tryouts?" Riley asked changing the subject.
"Tomorrow, all of the sports tryouts are tomorrow. Ugh I'm so stressed I'm not sure if I'm going to make the team or not, and even if I do I'm not going to be swim team captain, Melody is and she's looking at her fourth straight year of being swim captain." I said ranting on
"Well maybe you can be co-captain." Riley said trying to be optimistic
"Yeah I guess." I said plopping down next to her. "We better go inside and get good seats." I said pointing at a massive crowd heading our way.
"Good idea," Riley said as we scampered up the marble stairs and into a large room filled with gold theater chairs with royal blue cushions. The auditorium was slanting downwards; there was a large circular stage at the bottom of the auditorium. Stairs lead from the top front doors to seating right in front and next to the stage. Riley and I took seats in one of the middle rows right in front of the stage. As we waited for orientation to start more and more kids started to file in. I looked around and saw the kid with the black and blue hair staring at me from four rows above Riley and I. I turned back around and blushed, before Riley could start asking questions orientation started.
"Hello everyone, I'm Jiminy Cricket the principle of Enchanted Academy." Mr. Jiminy said waving to the audience. It was kind of funny how our principle was a cricket he was so small! But he was placed in front of a camera so we could all see him on the television screens on the left and right walls.
"I hope that you all have an amazing time here, I would like to announce that you may select four elective classes this year, if you would like to drop a class you must go to the guidance office during the first week of school. Today we will be following the Wednesday schedule, because of course it's Wednesday" Mr. Jiminy said with a little laugh, he was trying to keep up the energy. At this point I started to zone out. But I came too when Riley tapped me and said we were moving along to our fifteen minute classes. I pulled my school schedule out and saw that I had Biology first on Wednesdays. I climbed out of my seat and followed the large crowd out the doors. I took the stairs up to floor three and walked down the hallway to the science wing. I walked into my Biology classroom, room 336. The teacher Mr. Jumba asked us to line up against the wall so he could assign lab partners for the rest of the year. He read out a list of names,
"Melia with Cory, Lee with Tobin, Axel with Charlotte, Davyn with Quon, Claire with Xavier." He said pointing at different tables; I walked over to the table in the back of the room as Mr. Jumba read out more names. The table was made out of black rock that was fireproof; a sink was in the middle of the table. Two green spinner chairs were placed at the table. All six tables were facing a large mahogany desk with a white board placed along the wall. I sat down on the chair to the right, I looked up to see who my partner was and I gasped. It was him.
Xavier POV
I sat down on my chair and looked at her. She was really pretty she had long red-brown hair and sea-blue eyes.
"Hey," I said
"Hi," She said quietly looking down at her notebook.
"I'm Xavier," I said holding out my hand
"Claire," She said taking my hand and gently shaking it.
"Class! Attention please, I'm Mr. Jumba and I'm your biology teacher for this year." Mr. Jumba was a large alien that had purple skin, a pink face and four eyes. He had three strands of purple hair sticking out of his head and talked in a deep voice.
"This year I will challenge you with different experiments, expect to have fun in this class." He said two eyes winking at the class. All of a sudden the bell chimed, and the whole class got up out of their seats and hurried out the classroom door to get to their next class.
"Alright see you all on Monday for the first official day of school." Mr. Jumba said taking a seat at his desk.
"Hey wait up," I said to Claire running up behind her. She turned around and waited for me to catch up with her.
"What do you have next?" I asked her as we walked along together.
"English, you?" She said
"Manners." I said blankly
"Well have fun." She said turning off and heading down another hallway."
"Thanks, you too." I said as I did a little goodbye wave. She timidly waved back and continued walking not looking back once.
Riley POV
It was late about four-thirty and I was shelving books before I clocked out for the day when I pushed a bunch of books to the side a face appeared. I jumped and dropped the books I was holding. I looked up to see Carlos
"Oh jeez sorry, didn't mean to scare you." He said through the gap
"No it's fine, " I said picking up the books "Is there something you need?"
"Well," he said rounding the corner "I was wondering if you wanted to go pick up a cup of coffee or something. After you're done of course."
"Yeah sounds like fun," I said "Let me just finish putting these away and I'll meet you outside."
"Great! Well I'll just sit outside on the steps." He said
"Ok, I'll be right out" I said turning around and rushing through the rest of the books in my hands. Did he just ask me out?
"Going somewhere?" It was Jakob.
"Umm yeah I made plans after work." I said quickly shelving the last book in my hands and walking around Jakob.
"What did that Carlos guy want?" he pestered on following me to my desk.
"Just asking where a book was." I said, "I got to go now, bye!" I quickly said grabbing my book bag from my desk and running out the door before Jakob could ask any more questions.
"Hey," Carlos said, "You ok?"
"Yeah, let's go." I said.
Carlos POV:
"So how's life?" I asked Riley trying to keep up conversation.
"It's good, my brother is supposed to come tomorrow along with everyone else for the first day of school. How's yours?" She asked
"Good, I'm just trying to adjust to life here in the Kingdom it's really different than on the island." I said as we approached the coffee shop on the school grounds. The coffee shop was a small brick building right by the beach. I opened the door for her and we both stepped in. We walked up to the counter and ordered the whole shop smelled like coffee grounds and cinnamon. I ordered a decalf iced coffee with extra milk. While Riley ordered a decalf lemon iced tea. We sat down in a booth by the window overlooking the ocean. The booths were made out of redwood and soft red pillows. Riley and I sat across from each other and sat in awkward silence for about two minutes. Before making polite small talk until i suggested something fun.
"So," I said, "Want to play a game?"
"Yeah sounds fun, which game?" she asked
"I was thinking 10 questions."
"Alright you start." She said taking a long sip of her drink.
"Full name?"
"Riley Corona Fizhurbert."
"Interesting name." I said
"Thanks, I'm named after my mom." She said with a tiny smile
"Birthday?" i continued
"June 27th."
"Where are you from?"
"Corona."
"Who are your parents?"
"Eugene and Rapunzel."
"Biggest fear?"
"Oh, Spiders and being locked in a small space all alone."
"Greatest achievement?"
"When I was valedictorian five years in a row"
"Favorite activities?"
"Reading and writing."
"Best friend?"
"Claire daughter of Eric and Ariel."
"Favorite food?"
"Strawberries and watermelon"
"Last question, would you like to go out again sometime?" she paused for five seconds,
"Yeah, sounds fun." She said finally "Your turn,"
"Alright," I laughed
"Full name?"
"Carlos de Vil."
"Where are you from?"
"What I like to call the island for the wicked."
"Birthday?"
"April 29th."
"Parent?"
"Cruella de Vil"
"Favorite food?"
"Steak"
"Favorite activities?"
"Sports, science."
"Greatest Achievement?"
"When I got my letter to come to Enchanted Prep."
"Best Friend?"
"I don't have one." Riley paused for a moment but nodded and kept going
"Greatest Fear?"
"Dogs."
"Really?" Riley asked
"Yeah, why?"
"Your mom basically skins puppies for a living." She said. I gave her a look,
"Sorry I was just following what I have heard. Anyways would you do this again?" she said
"Yeah I would." I said as I looked at my phone.
"Crap we've gotta go It's five thirty." I said tripping out of the booth and grabbing Riley's arm and dragging her out of the shop. Riley and I both ran up back to the school and back to the Beach House. If we were late for dinner people would start wondering where we are.
"What do you think of the beach house?" Riley asked
"It's pretty nice don't you think?" I said
"Yeah, well I have to get ready for dinner by six, I'm eating with my family-friends tonight. But I had a great time." Riley said
"Me too," I said "If your not busy do you want to have dinner with me next Friday? After the first week of school?"
"Yeah that would be nice." Riley said "Well I'll see you around, bye."
"Bye," I said. Riley exited out of the sliding glass doors too the gazebo walkway. I felt weird like my body was tingling all over did I actually like her? I had to get the thought of actually liking her out of my head. She was just an assignment, nothing more but she still lingered in my thoughts.
A/N: Hello! First I would like to say I realize that Riley has more POV's than most of the characters right now and possibly will for the rest of the book because she is one of the main characters. BUT DON"T FRET!!! Because there are more characters coming along the way including some of the major ones. Shout-out to my best friend Readwritlife! She's amazing and so supportive. If your a big fan of the Percy Jackson series go check out her story The Legends' Daughter. Also her story Sick of You is really good. Thank you all so much! Please Comment! I love to hear your opinions and ideas!
