Chapter 12

*Not Edited*

Mal

Three months had passed and spring had come early to Enchanted Academy the flowers were already blooming and buds were already visible on the trees.

"Flowers make me sick." Evvie commented as we walked through the school grounds.

"Why are they to good for you?" I asked sarcastically

"I think you already know the answer." She replied. We were both walking over to the sports center where a carnival was being held for the students of Enchanted Academy. Evvie and I were supposed to meet up with Jay and Carlos in front of the Center before heading out to the fields where the Carnival was located.

"Sup Mal, Eve." Jay said as we approached the Sport's center. He walked over to the both of us and put one arm around each of us.

"Don't call me Eve." Evvie said rolling her eyes.

"Hey Carlos." I said he smiled at me. Carlos and I had gotten pretty close these past three months. He was the only one who understood my relationship with Ben and I understood the same way with his and Riley's relationship. It wasn't like Jay and Evvie would understand much less any of the other villain kids.

"Did you hear anything?" Jay asked me.

"No, nothing." I replied all the kids were getting annoyed. Our parents had not contacted us since the winter and we were all confused on what to do next. What I had been doing was just school and spying more on Ben. Without proper direction everyone seemed to be losing it. Just yesterday Phoenix set the science wing on fire and blamed it on a freak science experiment. Last week Galiana daughter of Ursula had a mental break down and caused the fish to break out of their tank shattering the aquarium in the Biology lab. Galiana blamed this accident on her accidentally bumping the tank causing it to shatter. Evvie told me that the kids being in the land of the heroes for so long has caused ourselves to second guess our loyalties to our parents. She made me promise that I would never change and we would make it out of this land of heroes alive and stay the villains we were born as.

"So are we going or not?" Carlos asked us.

"Let's go!" Jay yelled into the air.

As we made our way down to the carnival girls who walked by us were giggling and waving at Jay.

"Since when do you know all these girls?" I asked him.

"Since I found out all the girls at this school like handsome bad boys." Jay said smirking.

"Yeah, you just keep telling yourself that." Evvie said to Jay patting him on the arm.

"Wow, look at this." Carlos said pointing at the fair. It was ginormous. A large Ferris wheel was in the far corner of the field while a small roller coaster was in the other corner. Games and food stands were set up in a long line leading to the two rides. Blue and yellow flags decorated the carnival grounds while lights were strung from overhead.

"Let's go on the roller coaster!" Jay said pushing us through the line of booths and tents.

"Could we at least walk slower?" Evvie said tossing her hair back and adjusting her dark blue tiara that blended with her hair.

"Wait guys." Something caught my eye. It was a shabby dark red tent with two signs. One read: 'fortune teller' and the other said 'Can see the future'.

"I'll be right back." I told them. I walked into the tent to see an elderly woman sitting at a table with a crystal ball. Her long red robe was worn out; she looked up at me her old blue eyes stared into my crystal clear blue ones. A trait my mother always hated.

"Come in darling, I've been expecting you." The fortuneteller said motioning me to sit down at the other end of the table.

"What would you like to know?" The fortuneteller asked me. I hesitated for a moment trying to get the words in order. "You can trust me Mal." She said,

"How do you know my...?"

"I can see everything darling, now ask me anything." The Fortuneteller said closing her eyes.

"What is my future?" I asked her.

"You have to be more specific than that." She said opening her eyes and doing a flourish with her hands.

"I want to know what side do I end up on? Good or Evil?" I asked her.

" I want a dollar." The lady said, I slapped a dollar down on the table.

"Give me your hand." The fortuneteller said holding out her bony hand. I took her cold hand and was blinded by a white light. I blinked a couple of times, I found myself standing in a large room with floor to ceiling windows. I looked down; I was wearing a long dark purple dress with black high heels. My hair was left long and fell down my back like a waterfall. But it felt different; it felt lighter, not as heavy as before. I turned to my left to see a dark blue canopy bed and a white nightstand. I walked over to the nightstand; there was a diamond tiara on a royal blue pillow. The tiara's ends were pointed like tiny flames. Placed in the center of the tiara was a tiny diamond dragon. 'Where am I?' I wondered. A door creaked behind me I jumped and whirled around.

"Carlos?" An older looking Carlos came through the door dressed in a black suit coat with ripped black jeans and a red shirt.

"Queen Mal?" He said. I gasped did he just say Queen? No this couldn't be possible the only way I would become a Queen would be if I helped my mother overthrow the kingdom. That would explain why Carlos would be here, why else would he be? I saw a flash of white light again I jumped back screaming. I looked around to find myself back in the fortuneteller's tent.

"What was that?" I screamed at the lady.

"What was what?" She asked folding her hands together.

"That didn't answer my question!" I said.

"Futures can send mixed messages." She replied

"Can you please show me something else?" I asked

"You need another dollar." The lady said, I checked my pockets but I couldn't find any money.

"I'll be right back." I said quickly running out of the tent. I found Evvie, Carlos and Jay standing outside.

"Can I borrow a dollar?" I asked Evvie quickly.

"Where were you?" Evvie asked frustrated.

"In the fortune teller tent." I said pointing behind me.

"What tent?" Carlos asked me.

"The tent back there." I said turning around.

"It...it was just there." I said,

"Well I don't see anything." Evvie said giving her head a little shake.

"It was so weird, she could actually show you your future." I said

"Well what did you see?" Jay asked me. I opened my mouth to answer but I saw Ben out of the corner of my eye and we locked eyes. We smiled at each other before Ben was surrounded by his friends and dragged away. Evvie saw what I was looking at she turned back around and shook me.

"Earth to Mal!" She yelled in my face.

"What?" I stuttered

"Jay asked you a question."

"Sorry Jay, what did you say?" I said turning to Jay

"What did that fake lady show you?" Jay asked me.

"Well I was in a room with a tiara and someone called me queen." I said giving my best friends a quick synopsis.

"Don't you know what this means?" Evvie said to me.

"What?"

"We're going to take the kingdom!" Evvie said in a hushed whisper. Jay looked excited while Carlos looked a little shocked but at the same time happy.

"How do you know I'm going to be queen? My mom would become queen first." I asked her

"Well you asked her for the future. Maybe you'll become queen after your mom!" Evvie said. I opened my mouth so say something but Jay butted in.

"Can we talk about this later? We've got a roller coaster to ride!" Jay said excitedly.

"Alright fine!" Evvie said throwing her hands in the air. Jay kept pushing us towards the roller coaster while blabbing about how us villains can have fun too. We were all laughing when someone grabbed me by my arm and pulled me into a small dark space between two tents.

"What the...?" But the person put their hand over my mouth.

"Shhh!"

"Ben? You scared me." I whispered,

"Wow that's a first. I scared the daughter of the Queen of Evil." He said with a little laugh.

"Haha not funny." I crossed my arms,

"Ok sorry. But I wanted to ask you something."

"What?"

"Would you like too have lunch with me this afternoon." He asked me,

"Ok fine, sure." I replied

"Great! Twelve at the gazebo in the forest." He said,

"What river gazebo?" I asked.

"The one at the south of the river." Ben said "See you there." He winked at me and walked away. I shook my head,

"He's crazy." I said to myself, I checked the time. 11:30! Wow I had to get going. I walked out of the small space.

"Mal!" I heard my name being screamed.

"Could you stop disappearing?" I turned to see Evvie bringing out the evil queen side of herself.

"Sorry." I started

"Care to explain yourself?" Evvie asked crossing her arms.

"I would love to but I have to go." I said taking a step backwards.

"I thought we were going to ride the roller coaster." Jay said sounding disappointed,

"I know but I got a call." I said trying to leave,

"From our parents?" Evvie jumped a little in excitement.

"No, from the principle. BYE!" I said as I ran off.

"Ok south part of the woods." I said to myself as I ran back towards the school. Luckily it wasn't hard to find the gazebo.

"What's that?" I asked myself as I approached the woods. On one of the oak trees at the beginning of the woods was a dark purple ribbon tied around the trunk. I saw a trail of purple ribbons tied to different trees making a path that lead deeper into the woods. I followed the trail collecting all the ribbons as I went. I stopped at a stone staircase leading down to the river. I walked down the stairs and saw Ben standing in a lovely open gazebo made of stone. He had two chairs and a table set up with flowers and tons of delicious food.

"Ben. What is this?"

"I thought we could have a picnic out here." He said pulling out one of the chairs for me. I thanked him and sat down.

"Did you do all this for me?" I asked him.

"Maybe..." his voice trailed off.

"Ben?"

"Ok yes." He said looking guilty,

"That's so sweet. No one has ever done something like this for me." I said shyly,

"Good. I'm glad to be the first." He said, we locked eyes and smiled for a couple of awkward seconds.

"So food." I said breaking the silence.

"Oh right," Ben said "Mrs. Potts made this for us." He said holding up a pot of tea. I laughed, "She's not a teapot still is she?" I asked half joking half serious.

"Last time I checked she was still in her human form." Ben said laughing. I laughed too. We continued to make small talk over a lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches and lots of fresh fruit. When we were both stuffed Ben took off his shirt.

"Wait, what are you doing!" I asked him in shock.

"Going swimming. Come on!" Ben said throwing his shirt to the side and jumping into the river.

"Aren't you supposed to wait an hour after you eat before going swimming?" I asked him.

"You are but I'm trying to be evil." He said making a face at me while treading water.

"That's not evil it's stupid." I replied laughing,

"Are you going to come in or not?" Ben asked me.

"No I didn't bring my swim suit."

"Are you too scared to mess up your clothes?" He said teasing me. I looked down at what I was wearing. A purple peplum top, black pants and purple combat boots.

"I'll dip my feet in." I said pulling off my boots and socks and putting my feet in the water. The fresh water tickled my toes and chilled my feet. I felt hands grab my ankles and pull me into the water. I fell face first into the water, I opened my eyes and found myself underwater. I scrambled to the surface to see Ben a few feet from me laughing.

"Ben!" I screamed playfully at him. His face fell when he saw me.

"Ben, I'm only kidding." I said quickly, Ben was looking at me in disbelief.

"What is it?" I asked him.

"Your hair." He said swimming closer to me,

"I know it looks weird when it's wet." I said a little offended,

"No it's not that." He said

"The what is it?" I asked him super confused.

"It's blonde."

Ben

"What?" She screamed, she paddled back over to the gazebo and pulled herself onto the floor of the gazebo. I followed her and did the same.

"Do you have a mirror?" She said frantic. I slipped over to the table where my phone was. I handed it to her and she looked at her reflection.

"No, no, no. This can't be possible!" She said to me

"Did you know about this?" I asked her.

"No! I knew that purple was not my natural hair color but I thought my hair was purple forever." She said stressing out using her magic to try and change her hair color back. Green mist swirled around her head but when it faded nothing happened.

"It's not working!

"Ok relax." I said trying to calm her down.

"How did you die your hair?" I asked her.

"My mom used powerful magic when I was a baby." She said pacing,

"Ok, we need help." I said picking up my shirt. I threw it to Mal who used the shirt as a scarf and put it over her head. I took Mal's hand and lead her out of the woods.

"Where are we going?" She asked me when we reached the edge of the woods.

"We're going to get help." I said, "It's clear come on." I lead Mal down the path that leads to the dormitories.

"Why are we going to the Beach house?" Mal asked me as we walked through the front doors of the current freshman dormitories.

"You'll see." I reassured her. We walked outside under a gazebo pathway, which lead to another building. As we entered the building we spotted some girls who were walking towards us.

"People!" Mal shrieked and pushed me behind a potted plant. We crouched there until we saw the girls leave. I walked quickly over to the elevators and pushed the up button. The elevator on the right dinged, Mal and I walked inside.

"Anxelin said she's on the fifth floor." I said to myself, pushing the number five button.

"Who?" Mal questioned me.

"Someone who I think can help." I said,

"Good. My hair feels weird." Mal was looking at herself in the elevator mirror.

"How so?"

"It just feels weightless." She said. Her now blonde hair was now dry and it shined like the sun on a sunny day.

"I like it blonde." I told her, and I really did.

"Really?"

"Prince's honor." I said standing up straight, she laughed a little. The doors dinged open, Mal fumbled with the shirt and slammed it back around her head.

We stayed quiet until we reached room 516.

"Who lives here?" Mal asked me

"You'll see." Was my only reply; thank goodness it was her who opened the door.

"Rialynn!" I said as soon as she recognized me.

"Hey Ben, who's this." She said looking at Mal.

"Riley it's me." Mal said

"Mal? What are you guys doing here wet and half naked?" Riley said looking at me.

"Mal show her." I said Mal took the shirt off her head revealing to Riley her blonde hair.

"It's blonde!" Riley freaked.

"Yeah we don't know what happened." I said "I was hoping you could maybe heal her hair and see if turns back to purple."

"I don't know if my magic can do that." Riley said

"Can you at least try?" I pleaded with her.

"Fine. Claire?" Riley yelled into the room. "She's not here come one in." I held the door for Mal before entering to Riley and Claire's room locking the door behind me.

"Sit down Mal." Riley said, Riley put her hands on Mal's head and closed her eyes. Riley's hands started to emit a bright yellow glow a little lighter than Mal's new hair color.

"Did it work?" Mal asked the two of us. I shook my head while Riley said no.

"Let me try again," She said. Riley put her hands back on Mal's head and started singing the healing incantation. She must be really desperate; she almost never sang the song unless someone had seriously injured himself or herself. Her hands stopped glowing and still nothing happened to Mal's hair color.

"Can you use your magic?" Riley asked her.

"I've already tried, it doesn't work" Mal said putting her face in her hands.

"I'm going to call my parents they'll know what to do." I said turning around and putting my phone out of my pocket.

"Ben, no!" Mal begged me.

"We have no other choice." I told her.

Even though it took only three hours for my parents to arrive but it seemed like "three years" according to Mal. Thankfully Riley gave Mal a scarf to cover her hair so I could put my shirt back on for my parents. Riley was kind enough to let us stay hidden in her room until my parents called back. She and Mal talked the whole time. It seemed like they settled their differences. My phone buzzed in my back pocket.

"Dad? Yeah, where? Ok see you." I replied to my dad. "Mal!" I called to her. "My parents are in the principal's office. They want to see you." I said Mal and I thanked Riley for her hospitality before traveling back down to the main office where Jiminy Cricket's office was located. As we walked down the hallway I spotted my mom in her yellow dress and my dad in his normal blue suit.

"Mom! Dad!" I yelled down the hallway. They both turned as Mal and I ran down the hallway.

"What are we doing here at the principal's office?" I asked my parents.

"Mal's mother needs to speak with her." My mother said,

"But I though she wasn't allowed on the mainland." Mal said confused.

"Take off your scarf Mal." My mother commanded, Mal obeyed and pulled off Riley's purple scarf. My parent's gasped and murmured among themselves,

"Mal." My father started, "Your mother is waiting for you inside with Mr. Cricket."

Mal handed the scarf to me and opened the door to the principal's office. I looked at my parents in shock and confusion when I heard her voice say:

"Your not my mother."
