Chapter 4 - Home Life
He wakes up the next morning and runs down the stairs to tell his mom how the mad hatter and March hare had a tea party when he suddenly remembered that she was gone. Leaping over the last four steps he hears his aunt laughing in the parlor before stopping to look at him and glare.
"What are you doing Alfred? Would your mother allow you to make so much noise at this early hour?" Her arms cross as she finishes the first question.
"Its Alfie and yes." he states simply.
"No your name is Alfred... I would know I was the one who named you." she boasts before gasping. "Why are you still in your night gown? Did your mother never teach you how a young gentlemen is supposed to dress either?" Her friends suppress a laugh.
Alfie stomps up the stairs and slams his door closed. Quickly changing into the three piece suit that a young English man is supposed to wear in polite company but takes some water and styles the front of his auburn hair to stick up to the right with a few strands still hanging half way down his forehead. He opens his door after putting on his blue and white striped dress socks and black dress shoes.
His aunt smiles at first when he walks down the stairs. Until she looks up at his face when her face turns to a scowl. (sigh) "That's a little better Alfred." He frowns and whispers alfie before sitting in the arm chair.
"So anyway, She told me that Claude fancied Sarah before he found her in bed with Mr. Winchester-" Her friend continues as everyone gasps. "That's not even the best part, Sarah now fancies Claude back but he won't even look at her..." Alfie began tuning the blonde woman out as he stares out the window thinking of the wonderful places and his odd dream again. In his dream he had met a smiling cat who was notorious for disappearing when you needed him most.
"Alfred! Are you listening boy?" His Aunt yelled for the fourth time.
"What?" he asks shaking his head.
"(sigh) I said breakfast is ready and unless you aren't planning on eating this morning you had better get in the dining hall." she says flustered.
"Oh... Yes ma'am." he says scooting out and jumping down from the chair and walking to the dining hall before he realized that his aunt was not following him. "Aunt Margaret, are you not coming?" he turns inquisitively. She glares and hisses back "I will be there in a moment." To which he mumbles "Yes ma'am" and turns to keep walking.
At breakfast Aunt Margaret gets onto Alfie for every single thing he does. First when going to eat his wheaties he picked up his teaspoon. She gave him a lecture on the significance of eating with the proper utensil as she pointed to the soup spoon. Sighing at every gulp of milk he took and large bite he swallowed, until finally she ate her poached egg hastily keeping it lady like. Then dabbed her mouth delicately with the napkin and cleared her throat.
"How your mother ever thinks you will someday make a suitor. I haven't the slightest idea, but while I'm living here as your guardian I shall make it my mission to do my best at accomplishing this task." She sighs pushing her chair back from the table and returning to the parlor to make a couple phone calls.
"Aunt Margaret, I'm only ten." He says as she walks away whispering that last part because he knows she won't hear him no matter what volume his voice his. He then shrugs going back to eating his wheaties and sipping on his milk. He began to pray that his mother would return from business in China soon so that he could go back to being a kid and dreaming even while he was awake. He smiled thinking of his five impossible things although it was already after breakfast.
