Facts 2011-2040: Marvel's Agents of Shield Themed Page

With season 2 in full swing, I figured why not! Enjoy!

Fact #2011

This might be this close to turning into an urban legend (or it might not), but Jeph Loeb says the idea for a Marvel TV show came from none other than Clark Gregg himself. Loeb says he and Gregg were at a fan event for an "Ultimate Spider-Man" animated TV series and that Gregg kept saying "Coulson lives" in his ear as an idea for a television series. It appears this was a few months before his demise was made public when "The Avengers" was released. Gregg kept shaking his head saying he doesn't remember any of it, but Loeb stood by his story. In either case, credit Gregg and fan's passion for the character for resurrecting him and spearheading "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Fact #2012

Intriguingly, Whedon and Tancharoen revealed that the inspiration for energetic and adorable scientists Fitz and Simmons (Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge ) came from the Malloy brothers played by Casey Affleck and Scott Caan in "Ocean's Eleven."  Neither Fitz nor Simmons were originally written as being from the U.K. (Henstridge is British, De Caestecker is Scottish), but once the duo auditioned they made the change to the characters.

Fact #2013

There has been some debate over whether the character rights that Marvel Studios, 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures have on the big screen also translate to the small screen.  None of the companies have commented on it publicly and Fox and Sony haven't tried to create television shows based on the X-Men or Spider-Man respectively.  That being said, when a fan asked if we might ever see mutants on "MAoS," Jeph Loeb's answer was a carefully prepared line he's clearly had in his back pocket for sometime.  Loeb noted, "There is no proof that in the Marvel cinematic universe there are mutants."

Fact #2014

This isn’t the first time S.H.I.E.L.D. got on television. S.H.I.E.L.D. made an apperance in a Hasselhoff TV movie.

Fact #2015

Hayley Atwell Reprises Her ‘Captain America’ Role for ‘Agent Carter’. This was teased at the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel.

Fact #2015

Unlike his comic book counterpart, whose first appearance was made in the 2010 comic titled Iron Man 2- Phil Coulson: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1, Clark first starred as Coulson in the 2008 film Iron Man.

Fact #2016

He revised the role in Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) , Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant (2011), Marvel One-Shot: A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To Thor's Hammer (2011), The Avengers (2012), The children's TV series The Ultimate Spider-Man (2012- present day), The hit TV series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013- present day), LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (2013) Video game voice over,  and Marvel Heroes (2013) Video Game voice over.

Fact #2017

Clark has a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Fact #2018

At the age of 15, Chloe Bennet was already making a name for herself as a Chinese pop singer, going by her given name, Chloe Wang.

Fact #2019

One of the ongoing mysteries of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the “real” identity of Skye, especially since being revealed as an 084 (object of unknown origin) in the twelfth episode – the first time the team have heard about an actual person being given that designation.

Fact #2020

Lucy Lawless joined the cast in season 2.

Fact #2021

During her first encounter with Michael Peterson, Skye tries to convince him to come out as a hero. She begins to say the well-known Stan Lee quote, "With great power comes great responsibility," but stops short.

Fact #2022

As Peterson is leaving the doctor's hospital room, the doctor says that whatever he ends up doing will up as a disaster. Before jumping out of a window, Peterson replies, "No, it's an origin story." This is a nice nod to the tried and true method comic book method of telling the story of how a hero (or villain) got to where they were in current continuity.

Fact #2023

When Agent Wade, Agent Fitz, and Agent Simmons first meet, Simmons asks Wade if he's excited to be, "coming into their journey into mystery". This is a reference to an early Marvel series which started as a horror anthology but later became the flagship Thor book starting with issue #126 in 1966. The book series has since been used to tell other stories related to Thor and the mythology built around him.

Fact #2024

Agent Simmons remarks that the Extremis serum has certain similarities to the Erskin serum which is the serum that gave Captain America his superpowers.

Fact #2025

Like the Erskine serum, Agent Simmons points out that the Extremis serum was emitting a large amount of gamma radiation, the same type of radiation that fuels The Hulk's transformations.

Fact #2026

In the beginning of the episode, Wade retrieves a Chitauri neural link. The Chitauri are a shapeshifting species that were first introduced in Marvel's alternate universe brand, Ultimate Marvel, in the early 2000s. They were later used as the alien species that invades New York during the events of 2012's The Avengers.

Fact #2027

Agent Coulson makes an offhand remark when observing the effects that serum that the centipede device injects is having on the first test subject. He calls it Extremis. This is a reference to a 2005-06 arc in Iron Man Vol. 4 entitled Extremis. Extremis was also used in Iron Man 3, which followed plot points from the Extremis arc.

Fact #2028

The Stark Industries Logo can be seen for a brief moment on the side of a Bus in the begining of the pilot episode.

Fact #2029

When assessing the secret lab where the Extremis serum was being tested, Agent Fitz releases a small set of drones while humming the famous song from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Two of the drones are later identified as Bashful and Snow, references to two of the characters in that story.

Fact #2030

n the opening moments of the episode, S.H.I.E.L.D. command can be heard checking in with the team on the plane. The plane's callsign is S.H.I.E.L.D. 616 which is a nod to Earth 616. There are multiple earths/universes in the Marvel Universe, and Earth 616 refers to the main Marvel Universe which contains the characters that most people immediately recognize as Marvel properties.

Fact #2031

The S.H.I.E.L.D base at the end of the episode was called "Slingshot".  Which was also one of members in Nick Fury's Secret Warriors team that showed up during the Secret Invasion.

Fact #2032

"The last one was a hammer..." - On their way to Peru, Skye asks what to expect with the 0-8-4. Coulson explains that the 0-8-4 designation is for unknown objects with unknown origins that are very dangerous. He then explains that the last 0-8-4 they experienced was a hammer. This is a nod to 2011's Thor which saw Odin strip Thor of his powers/hammer and sent it to Earth.

Fact #2033

Coulson is still obsessed with collecting historical artifacts and memorabilia like he was in the movies. His office is a shrine to all of this history, and in episode 2, he specifically points out the first wrist communicators that S.H.I.E.L.D. used back in World War II and Captain America.

Fact #2034

At the beginning of the episode we meet Agent Mack who is driving a truck. The name Mack is also the name of Lightning McQueen's truck friend in the Disney Pixar film 'Cars'.

Fact #2035

Skye mentions telepathy and ESP multiple times as possible explanations for Akela Amador's ability to sense things. Every time she mentions it, though, she is immediately told that's not possible, and that there is no evidence that telepathy or ESP exists. This is likely to firmly establish that elements of the X-Men universe will not be referenced in the show. Since Fox owns the X-properties, Marvel/ABC cannot use those characters.

Fact #2036

Coulson offers this line, "I Love These Things" when he uses the same device he used to get through the keycard locked lab door in Iron Man to get through the locked lab door in this episode. He also takes up the same arms folded with slightly hunched shoulders and turned away from the device stance that accompanied its use in Iron Man.

Fact #2037

After the third firefighter dies, the team is tasked with delivering the Chitauri helmet to "The Sandbox", a S.H.I.E.L.D. base in Africa. Later in the episode, Coulson chews out Simmons and Ward and mentions how annoying dealing with the Moroccan office is. This opens the door for the show to explore former Avenger, Black Panther.

Fact #2038

When Coulson confronts Hand about there not being an extraction plan for Fitz and Ward she tells Coulson that "Barton and Romanov don't need an extraction," to justify the decision. Obviously this is a reference to Hawkeye and Black Widow from the Avengers.

Fact #2039

In the final tag of the episode, The Well, Agent Coulson dreams of his time in Tahiti.  While receiving a massage on the beach from an attractive massuse, Coulson asks, "Did I fall asleep?" to which his caretaker immediately responds, "For a little while." This is a direct call back to Dollhouse, a short lived show on Fox.  This was an  exchanged used between Dolls (field agents) and their Handlers.  It was how you finalized a memory wipe and return to doll state.

Fact #2040

If not magical in nature, Tobias Ford's abilities may stem directly from being caught between two worlds or dimensions. When he appears (and disappears) he leaves a small smoke trail. Even though Marvel doesn't own the rights to the X-Men in film and TV, this ability ties in to how Nightcrawler and his father Azazel teleport.

*******

I hope you all enjoyed these facts as much as I did!
