Bolt One Shot
"It's gonna be okay, Bolt," Nineteen year old Penny said gently as she stroked his white fur.
Bolt whimpered quietly and Penny let her brown eyes, brimming with tears, rest on her old dog. In the backseat, their cat, Mittens, gave a meow as she watched her friend lay in pain.
Penny was sitting in the passenger seat of her mother's compact car as they drove for the veterinarian as fast as the speed limit would let them. Bolt had began to become less and less active until he rarely got off the couch. He had lost teeth and energy on top of painful joints and muscles.
11 year old Bolt was cuddled carefully in a soft blanket and seated in his favorite person's lap as they rushed for the vet to treat his failing heart.
Bolt cast his syrup brown eyes onto the skinny black cat in the backseat.
"Mittens," Bolt said quietly, pausing a moment to cough. "Everything's going to be fine. I'm practically invincible, remember?"
"Silly Bolt, you don't have any super powers!" Mittens replied softly, her voice cracking with sorrow as she watched Bolt's glassy eyes shut as he gave another whimper.
"Hold on, boy, we're almost there," Penny comforted, patting him on his head.
His furry tail wagged slowly as he gave Penny a weak smile. Bolt wasn't afraid of dying, he only wished that his dear friends didn't have to witness it. He loved them and hated that they were in so much sorrow.
"Lighten up, cat," he urged, but he couldn't finish his sentence, as he began to cough again.
"Don't talk, it'll only make it worse." Mittens demanded.
The car skidded to a stop. Penny jumped out of the car, lifting the dog with her and taking the blanket too. Her mother grabbed Mittens and took Bolt's favorite toy form the backseat. Mr. Carrot had belonged to bolt since they got him as a pup, and Bolt loved the heck out of that rubber orange carrot.
Penny rushed up the sidewalk and burst into the pet hospital section of the vet office. She ran to the counter and told the woman that they'd called a few minutes ago for "Bolt". As Penny checked in, her mother brought Mittens into the building.
"This way, ma'am," the woman directed.
She steered them into a clean smelling room with a steel table and a cabinet full of supplies.
"Put him here," the lady told her as she lifted a few items out of the cabinet.
Penny sat Bolt down on the metal table and spread the blanket under him. Her mother laid Mr. Carrot beside Bolt's head, and the dog wagged his tail slightly showing his thanks.
The next twenty minutes the nurses checked up Bolt and the doctor came and diagnosed their beloved dog.
"I'm sorry, but Bolt here has a heart issue. He's in great pain and I'm afraid there is only one option for him now." The doctor told them softly.
Penny let the hot tears slip onto her cheek as she looked at Bolt. The old white dog had pain in his eyes and weariness in his old bones. Penny hated it so utterly much, she could barely contain her tears, but she knew Bolt was in much pain and had suffered so long already.
"Could I have a few minutes?" Penny asked, her voice filled with tears.
"Of course," the doctor said. "I'll go get everything ready."
Her mother stepped up as the doctor left the room quietly. She gave Bolt a kiss on his forehead and a pat on his back. Then she took Mittens out and gave the girl and dog some time alone.
"Oh, Bolt," Penny cried out as she held her best friend in her arms, weeping violently. Her salty tears fell from her face and landed onto his vibrant white pelt.
Bolt whined for her as he rested his head onto her shoulder, giving her gentle comfort.
"I love you, boy, and I don't know if I can live without you!" She whispered into his fur as she buried her face in it.
Penny and Bolt took ten more minutes before her mother came back in and the Doctor told them everything was ready.
"Come on, boy," Penny's mother said, lifting him up and following the doctor out.
The small family went into another room back in the clinic and set Bolt down on a warm comfy bed made out of blankets. They gave him the medicine that would put him to sleep and Penny gave him one last goodbye.
Penny and Bolt were cuddled up, and Mittens even joined them, snuggling up to Bolt's soft fur.
They sat still and quietly as they watched Bolt fade away into death.
"Bolt, promise me one thing, boy," Penny whispered to him as she went face to face with her best friend. She held his head in her hands as she watched his brown eyes slowly begin to shut. "Promise me to face death, without fear,"
A single tear slid down her cheek as she gazed into his eyes. He gave a small bark in response as he licked her hand gently. With that, he closed his eyes one last time and drifted away to eternal sleep.
Penny bit her lip as her chin quivered.
She gave him one last embrace, saying softly, "You'll always be my good boy,"
A week later
Penny sat in a grassy field, directly in front of a black head stone labeled:
Bolt
2003-2014
"Our good boy"
A fresh bouquet of flowers were in the stand next to the headstone of the newly dug grave.
Penny let another tear slip to the ground as she lifted three things out of the purse on her shoulder. First, she brought out a maroon collar with a golden tag labeled, "Bolt, 2100 Riverside Dr. Hollywood CA"
She clipped the collar around the stand for flowers, where everyone who would ever put flowers there could see it.
Next, she pulled out Mr. Carrot and placed the toy in front of the grave saying, "There you go, Bolt. You're old buddy, Mr. Carrot."
Lastly, she pulled out a weather resistant picture frame, and she pounded the stake into the ground at the headstone. The frame displayed the following image,
"There you go, Bolt. All the comforts of home so you can rest in peace." She whispered to him, a sad smile on her face.
"Oh! I almost forgot," Penny said, standing up. "I'll be right back!"
She ran to her car and retrieved something. Penny trotted back to the grave and sat back down.
"This is Luna," she said, patting the dog she'd just gotten from the shelter that day. The new silver German Shepherd hadn't even been to their house yet, because Penny wanted to introduce Bolt first.
"She'll never replace you, but we had to get Mittens a new friend so she wouldn't be lonely!" Penny stated.
Penny stared sadly with a smile in memory of all Bolt had meant to her. She slowly rose off her knees and said, "Let's go Luna. I'll see you later, Bolt."
She leaned down and placed her hand on the headstone, giving the black stone a kiss of farewell. She gave a kiss to the stone next to Bolt's too. That stone was labeled, "Rhino"
"Don't have too much fun while I'm gone, boys," Penny said, leading Luna to her compact car.
She let the dog jump in the front seat and she whispered something softly as she started the car engine.
"Until next time, Bolt, my SuperDog."
