Face First into the Past

*flashback*
Year 828, before training begins.
"I'm joining the survey corps," instantly silverware clattered, a gasp echoed and my eyes stayed trained on my plate.

"Oh sweetie, you don't want to do that," her forced laughter apparent as my mother spoke out.

"I'm going to sign up for training tomorrow," I pushed.

"You aren't allowed to," she snapped back.

"Why not? Dad's in the military police, why can't I follow along?"

"He's safe in the walls just like you are. Don't throw that away for some stupid dream of death," she spoke, a shake evident in her voice as she held back to keep her composure.

"Then why'd you let him go? If he can walk up and leave then why can't I?" I glared into her eyes.

"Because you are my daughter!" This time the silverware forcefully clattered into the table as her fists slammed down.

"He's your husband!" I screeched back, my food staying untouched.

"Young lady. This is not a discussion," her voice flatlined. I always wondered if they were happily married, he was always out on military duty. I almost don't remember ever seeing them in the same room.

"You're right because I'm going no matter what," I demanded at her and forced myself out of the dinning room and eventually upstairs to my bedroom.

Present day

I looked up as a voice echoed across the courtyard and found a few soldiers circled around a figure. I froze when they finally moved to the side to show the leader, causing Erwin and the other cadets to halt into me.

"What's wrong?" I heard Erwin try to ask but I was already gone. My feet took over and quickly moved themselves across the pebble work where his back stood to me.

I grabbed onto his shoulder, voices reacting as I moved, and flung him around. My other hand shot out and slapped him across the face, if I had punched him I probably would've been put to death.

"What are you doing?!" voices screamed at me, arms tugged me back, the cologne wafted revealing it to be Erwin who probably caught on as I crossed the courtyard.

"How dare you assault your superior soldier," one of the ones from his side spoke.

His eyes were glazed over as he stared at me, the canteen probably sitting in his jacket like most of his subordinates said.

"Look at me!" I screamed against the arms as everyone stood around.

His eyes shifted up higher to me and still gave a blank look. You'd think he'd react harshly, who knew when he was slapped last.

"Really Dad?" I spat at his shoes, "you can't even be sober enough to look at me?"

His eyes shot wider as the fog in his eyes began to disappear. All the voices stopped and waited, most probably unknowing of his family life.

"This isn't the right time," Erwin whispered in my ear.

"I can't do the right time with this man. He had all the right times to visit me but he didn't. Did you even know I went into the military oh great superior?" I snarled, Erwin letting me go as he saw I wasn't on offensive attack.

I saw him slightly shake his head as he kept looking at me "You may go," he stated to the cadets besides him and they stammered and then nodded and left. "I understand your concern Erwin and thank you but I can take it from here."

"Yes sir," stated Erwin as the group left and made their way to the original goal further in the castle.

"Why don't we go somewhere to speak?"

"Why should I let you?"

"Because it's what you deserve," he turned and began walking away and like the good daughter I wanted to believe I could've been, I followed.

Passing through the courtyard I saw the group of 3 stationed on the edge, the two I was by turned towards each other but the raven haired Levi watched me until I was out of sight. We made our way into an office a few halls from the courtyard. It was small and pretty jam packed with things, I was guessing the bed was his couch.

"This where you live?"

"I stay here most of the time when I come here yes," he stated and sat down in his desk chair in the front.

"You mean always? Or do you have a mistress?"

"Stop," and I listened. I had no relationship with the man that sat in front of me who was I to fight against a very clear order. "I am still your superior."

"You're going to pull that act? I just slapped you. Throw me in the dungeon then," I snapped back the standards totally making no sense.

"Is that what you want? To ruin everything you worked for?"

"Oh so you know what I've done?"

"Of course I do. You're my daughter-"

"Don't give me that!" I pointed at him, my throat starting to burn with the build up of emotion.

"Well why not?" He responded softly, any sign of drinking wiped from his stature.

"Because I don't know you. You're just a face. You never came home," I spoke, the last part making a tear fall down, my eyes turning down and away from him as I stepped back.

"My job is time consuming-".

"I went through training I know what you do. You still could've stopped by. We're in the same town for crying out loud," I explained.

"Maybe yes but I was always here too," he combatted.

"You think mom let me out? I had to run away to go to military for crying out loud," I scoffed remembering how bad I left everything with her, a heaviness setting in my chest.

"You what?" His eyes were already on my face when I looked back up.

"I packed my stuff and ran when I enlisted for military. She refused to let me go saying it was some death wish," I mumbled out.

"Interesting. She certainly changed, she supported me in my endeavors into the military," he explained softly, maybe reflecting with himself.

"I'm upset with you, she probably feels a thousand times worse," I admitted knowing I may have been a child but I never knew him, she did.

"You may be correct on that," he sighed dropping into his desk chair and grabbing his canteen.

That's as close as we had gotten my whole life and it was already over before it got anywhere. I had training and he had commander duties so our separate ways we went.
