Chapter 6 - Paid Off

No one - including myself - ever understood why I decided to take Psychology which was without doubt the most difficult elective the school has to offer. I may not be entirely stupid but that didn't mean I believed I could pass Psychology - and especially not considering I skipped every single class.

Ha, my bad.

Anyways, I thought it would be a good idea to soften old Miss Dixon and find a way to get extra credits so I could actually pass this class despite not being here half of the time.

It was a lot harder than I thought.

'What do you mean I can't pass this class?' I demanded, trying not to seem afraid. Who knew what she would make me do if she saw how desperate I was.

'Well...' she said, clearly not liking the situation any more than me, 'there is a partner project. It'll count for a third of your grade, so if you get full marks, you would be able to pass this class.'

A partner project?

'But I still missed most of the work, so I'm behind,' I told her. I wished I never skipped class - there was no way I was going to pass. It was too late for me to catch up - and it didn't help that Psychology was insanely difficult.

'If I partner you with some of my best students, you may be able to pass,' said Miss Dixon, looking down at her list. 'Right now,' she said, glancing up to look at me once more, 'I have you partnered with Dustin Hastings, but I could partner you with -' I cut her off.

'Can I do the project with Jasmine Wilder?' There was silence. 'She takes psychology, right?' I asked, chewing the inside of my lip. What was I doing? I didn't know if Jasmine was even smart, though she did seem like the girl who would get straight A's.

'Why?' she asked, suspicion coating her voice. And that was when I did what could have been the stupidest thing in my whole eighteen years on Earth. I pulled out fifty dollars and handed it to Miss Dixon.

To put it simply, I bribed Miss Dixon to partner me up with Jasmine.

Yep, I'd finally gone insane.

She looked at the fifty dollars note before doing the impossible. She took it, slipping it into the pocket of her jacket, before scribbling out a name of on her list.

'Remember to come to class next period,' was all she said before I was unceremoniously kicked out of her classroom.

What the actual hell had happened?

Fifteen minutes later, I was once more in the classroom - except now I was sitting at my desk, alongside dozens of other students, most of whom were smarter than me. In the seat beside me, was Jasmine, who looked very unhappy with my being here.

Miss Dixon at the moment, was explaining the partner project to the rest of the class, all of whom were hanging off to her every words. This class was filled with nerds

'It's a partner project,' she told them, and I could see many of their eyes lighting up in excitement. Why were they excited?  'It will count for a third of your grade - it could be the difference between a pass or fail.' A good thing, or else I would have no chance of passing. 'However, you will have a lot of creative liberty on what to do with the assignment.'

Jasmine was smiling. Smiling! At least I knew she was good at the subject, or she wouldn't be smiling. In fact, most of them were smiling.

I knew why. While I myself may not be nerd, as I so kindly referred to them as, I did know one thing. That they were very competitive. I still remembered that time in math when Will Hargrove got the second-highest grade in class and his anger had thrown a very sharp pair of the scissors.

He got detention afterwards.

'Stop looking at each other - because I will be choosing the partners,' said Miss Dixon, jerking me back to reality so I could notice how everyone was glancing around the classroom, like lions searching for their prey.

Like I mentioned before, they were very - and I mean very competitive. I couldn't help but smirk though - because I did manage to get the partner I wanted, even if I did lose fifty dollars along the way.

Jasmine raised her hand, and Miss Dixon gestured for her to speak.

She didn't say what I expected.

'Miss - what if we're partners with an idiot?' Miss Dixon looked at her, shaking her head in disappointment. My smirk dropped slightly at her words as I realized I was one of the idiots she was referring to.

'Miss Wilder, don't call your classmates idiots. Everyone's smart...' Her voice trailed off, showing just how much confidence she had in me. 'Anyway,' she said, pulling herself from her thoughts. 'Seeing as you are so eager to know about your partner,' her eyes flicked to where I sat for a second, before landing on Jasmine once more, a smile etched on her face. 'Will be Cameron Black.'

Her mouth opened. Closed. And for a few seconds, she was speechless - trying to speak but failing miserably. And then she regained her voice...

'I CAN'T WORK WITH HIM!'

'Miss Wilder - no yelling in the classroom.' She said strictly, and out of the corner of my eyes I watched as Jasmine slammed her fists against her desk in her obvious fury.

'He wasn't here half the time!' Eyes were flicking from Jasmine, to where I sat. Struggling to look indifferent. 'He's a complete idiot! I'm going to fail. Why do you hate me so much? What did I do to deserve such a punishment?'

Silence met her outburst.

That was when she looked at me, her blue eyes brighter than I had seen them yet. I continued to smirk, because while my ego may be dented, I was fine, right? It wasn't like her words hurt me. Lies.

'Miss Wilder,' Miss Dixon said sternly, fixing Jasmine with a lethal glare that would make most students tremble with fear, 'not another word out of you - or I'll be setting detention.' She looked at me too, and I could tell she very much wanted to scream 'see' at me.

'You two will work together,' she said, continuing on with what she had previously said. 'Or I will make your life personal hell.' Jasmine sighed, slumping down in her seat. A sign of defeat.

'No need for that miss.'

And I smiled as Miss Dixon read the rest of the names. Sure, I had been insulted in front of some of the smartest kids at school and been reminded how much Jasmine hated me in a hundred different ways - but I did do two things.

I kept my promise to my mother, and I somehow managed to bribe my teacher into partnering me with Jasmine without getting in trouble.

I would count this as another victory for Cameron Black.

A/N:

Cameron is so cute, right?

He'd say he's hot, though.

Anyways, this is for the people who's been wondering just how cliche it was for him to get her. The books weren't as cliche as people though - because Cameron did rig some of the stuff. I love how he bribed his teacher - and the fact that the nerds aren't your typical nerds.

I like putting a bit of my personality in my characters - and I'm a nerd, by definition but I'm classified as a loner by people. I just have social anxiety.

Anyways, I thought I'd make them competitive. Ooh, did you notice the Stranger Things reference? I still haven't finished Season 4 because I keep rewatching the series from the start. Does that ever happen to you? You have a series or movie you can never complete?

It's hard finding these pick-up lines - like seriously.

Usually my favorite planet is Pluto, but I reckon it could be Uranus if you let me explore it.

That was one good, right? I'd definitely never say any of the pick-up lines I write to a real guy. I can't even talk to boys. Social anxiety, am I right?

Would you like to add a new bone to your anatomy?

Yep - I am aware of how bad these are. Some of them are guys' pick-up lines, so when I say them - got to change them up a bit.

I'll remind you though - I do not ever say them. To a guy. I might teach some girls the pick-up lines - they don't seem to think it's a good way of flirting though. I can't imagine why.

I hope at least you guys, use my pick-up lines.

Until next time though.
