~Prologue~
Sans, Papyrus, and Sora were all piled on the couch, blankly watching the television just to pass time. There was nothing good on right now; it was just something for the three of them to focus on.
But the faint noise of the tv suddenly broke as a loud bleeping sound rang through the entire house. Sora was first to jump at the sound, being that she had very sensitive ears to begin with.
"What that sound?!" she squeaked, pressing her paws to her ears to try to tone out the ear-piercing alarm.
"It's something on the television! A breaking news report, it seems," Papyrus stated, sitting up and pointing to the screen.
The two monsters listened closely as the report was announced. Sans, on the other hand, didn't snap out of his "lazy" state. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and shut out the voice coming from the television. It probably wasn't important anyway.
But as he turned on his phone, he was greeted with a notification; a text from his friend, Ramsey.
-Dude! Did ya hear the news?!-
Sans narrowed his eyes, sitting up slightly as he typed in a response.
•umm i haven't been paying attention. what's up?•
-Some disease escaped from the Lab! It's horribly contagious, I've heard...-
Sans felt his soul begin to pound, fear rising up within him.
•what are you talking about? what kind of disease?•
-I dunno exactly. All I know is it's really bad. My dad told me about it. Y'know, cuz he works as a scientist in all-
Sans hesitated before texting back.
•can you call me? try to explain what's going on?•
It wasn't long before Sans's phone started ringing. He quickly answered it, already knowing it was Ramsey.
"Alright. Give me the run-down of the situation."
Ramsey took a deep breath on the other line before he responded, though his voice was no more than a whisper. "A really bad disease that was contained in the True Labs somehow got out and has started infecting monsters..."
"What exactly does the disease cause? Like, what side effects?" Sans pressed, his eyes narrowing. "And why the hell are you whispering??"
"When a monster gets infected, they somehow turn into giant beasts. And they have absolutely no control whatsoever. They can't think... Can't feel anything emotionally... They just become mindless creatures that destroy anything in their path..." Ramsey murmured, his voice shaking.
"Why are you whispering??" Sans repeated, his tone slightly more forceful this time.
"B-Because-" The deer's voice was cut off by a low growl. For a moment, the only sounds coming through were that of Ramsey's panicked breathing and the distinct growling from somewhere near him. "It infected my father..."
And with that, there was a loud screech on the other line, just before it went to mere static. Sans soul began to pound frantically as he took in what had just happened.
The pinpricks of light within the skeleton's eye sockets disappeared completely, his eyes becoming like pitch-black voids.
Sans shakily set his phone down on the couch cushion next to him, a shudder wracking his body. Papyrus and Sora turned to look at him, noticing how shaken he was.
"Sans? What wrong?" Sora asked, scurrying over to him with concern in her eyes.
"How does this even exist?" Sans mumbled under his breath, not even really paying attention to Sora.
"What? The disease?" Papyrus asked, walking over and sitting down next to his brother.
"Yeah... What were they even working on that involved something like that?"
"Not sure. Details not given," Sora shrugged.
Sans sighed, holding a hand to his forehead. "Great. We've got a really infectious disease goin' around, and we don't even know a damn thing about it."
"You heard what it does though, right?" Papyrus pressed, unsure if his brother was actually paying attention or not.
"Know? Hell, I don't just know, I witnessed it," Sans replied, his eyes devoid of any light.
"How Sans witness disease if not leave house?" Sora chirped, tilting her head to the side. Then, her eyes suddenly went wide. "Sans not infected, right?!"
"What? No. I was on the phone with Ramsey, and..." Sans trailed off, his gaze fixated to the ground.
"What happened?" Papyrus asked.
"His dad got infected. And he attacked Rams," Sans explained, his voice shaking ever-so-slightly.
A small squeak escaped from Sora's mouth as her eyes turned pale gray with fear. Her ears pinned back against the sides of her head as her snowy-white fur stood on-end.
Papyrus fell silent. "Well, we should stock up on supplies while we still can. We don't know how long this could be a threat."
"No."
Both Sora and Papyrus stared at Sans in shock at his dead-serious response. The smaller skeleton held both of their gazes until he finally backed down, the harsh glint in his eyes softening as he let out a sigh.
"'M sorry... I just don't want anything to happen to ya..." Sans mumbled.
"It'll be fine, brother. The only cases they've had so far have been in Hotland. They haven't reached us yet. I know Captain Undyne will keep them at bay! Nyeh!"
"Just outta curiosity, how does it spread?" Sans asked, his eyes narrowed.
"Maybe through bite or scratch? Sora not know..." Sora replied.
Sans looked over at Papyrus, his expression serious. "Hate to break it to ya, but Undyne's probably gonna be one of the first ones to get infected outside of the Lab, if it's true that it spreads through a bite."
"Why?"
"Think about it. If she's constantly fighting 'em to keep 'me at bay, she's gonna get injured or something eventually. Once that happens... She's gone..." Sans answered, a pang of sadness creeping into his thoughts as he explained it to his brother.
The taller skeleton fell silent as he tried to comprehend what was happening. "Oh no... I don't want to lose Undyne!"
"But there no stopping it! She not back down from her duties as captain of Royal Guard!" Sora squeaked.
"Screw it. If she's gonna be an idiot, let her. I'm not taking any chances though. I'm not leaving this house until they figure everything out," Sans growled, sitting back on the couch and crossing his arms.
Papyrus sighed. "Okay... But I should at least go out and get some supplies. We might be here for quite some time."
Sans hesitated before he agreed to let him go. Hopefully it was all clear outside and his brother would be safe. It probably was, since it literally just broke out, in Hotland at that. He was just overreacting, that's all.
Everything would be fine. They'd figure it all out and they could go back to living normal lives. They just had to give it some time.
...
Right?
So! How'd ya like the first part? Interested yet? XD
No, seriously. Tell me how you guys feel about it in the comments! I'd love to hear feedback, especially because this started as a stupid idea I had at like 11:00 at night. XD
