Chapter 14 Seen again
The little bell over the front door made a loud 'ding' as Morgan and Prentiss walked in the small diner.
"Welcome to Wogo's, where satisfying our customers and cooking good food are our logo's." The fry cook leaned out and called through the small wooden window behind the counter.
They looked around at the six booths, four of which sat two people at each, and the counter which held three people. No one seemed to be fazed by their appearance as no one acknowledged them at all. Prentiss shrugged and walked up to the red haired girl behind the counter. "Hi, my name is Emily Prentiss and this is Derek Morgan. We're with the FBI. We'd like to ask you a few questions if that'd be alright?"
The young girl looked up and frowned, pulling out her other head phone. "What for?"
Morgan raised his eyebrows. "We just have a couple of questions."
She shrugged. "Sorry. We're not allowed to talk to anyone other than customers." She turned slowly, stopping to push play on her I-Pod and nudging the swinging door to the kitchen open with her foot.
"I am so sorry ya'll!" I softer voice called from behind them. "She is so rude sometimes. Believe me, she means well. If ya'll could me a quick second and let me put my bag down I'd be happy to talk to ya'll."
Prentiss smiled, as did Morgan, and thanked the petite brunette as she scurried around the counter, waving to an older couple. They sat down in an empty booth closest to the door and waited for her to join them.
"Again, sorry about that. I'm Matilda Hatcher." She shook Morgan's hand, then Prentiss' as she slid in the side across from them.
"It's very nice to meet you ma'am. That's quite the accent." Morgan smiled.
"Oh!" She laughed, pushing back one of her long, low hanging pig tails. "I just moved here from Texas not to long ago. Where are ya'll from? We usually don't get any new comers around this place."
Prentiss nodded and jotted that comment down in the small black notebook. "Virginia. My name is Emily and this Derek. We're with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit."
"FBI? Out here? What for?"
"I'm sure you're aware of the bodies that were found recently near the lost lake."
She shook her head. "Mmm. That was a shame. You know I had just recently spoke to all them?"
"At the diner?" Morgan asked.
"How'd you know?"
Prentiss smiled lightly. "This was the last place they made a purchase. Were you working the night they came in?"
She nodded again. "Yep. Sure was. It was- a Wednesday I believe. Yes. Wednesday, I'm sure of it. It was around eight, just before closing and they were the only folks in here."
They shared a look. "They were all in here at the same time?"
She nodded once. "Mhm. All left about the same time too."
"We're they here alone?" Morgan asked.
"Yes. I figured they'd talk to each other since they were all seated at the counter, but they were all quiet. On their phones mostly."
"Okay. Can you remember if you noticed anyone unfamiliar or-" Prentiss shrugged lightly. "Sketchy?"
She leaned back against the booth and made a face. "There was this one fella'. He sat outside the whole time they were here on that bench." She pointed her pink nail at the window.
"And your sure it was a man?"
"No. I just assumed. Most girls don't stay out here alone at night. We know better i suppose." She laughed.
"Thank you so much for your time. We really appreciate it." Prentiss smiled and handed her a small white card. "If you can think of anything-"
"I won't hesitate to give ya'll a holler. Have a nice day now."
They both smiled and waved goodbye to her as they walked out, the bell sounding again, and walking to the black bench.
"How is one man capable of capturing four people at the same time from the same place and then disposing of their cars in the same night?" Morgan shook his head.
Prentiss frowned. "Are we looking at a team?"
"Even then, it would be extremely difficult to keep them all quiet."
She nodded and glanced around, freezing as a flash of black hair vanished around the corner. "Did you see that?"
Morgan turned to her. "See what?"
Prentiss looked once again, rubbing her eyes. "N-never mind."
