MoonStone

Imogen

I was flipping through my phone in the back seat, looking at random pictures of Lucas. What can I say; I'm in love. I looked out the window, watching as the stores started disappearing and the streets turned narrower. On either side are abandoned business with boarded-up windows and weeds growing through the concrete steps. Suddenly, amidst the gray buildings, we encountered a desert.

"How far are we?" I asked

"Shouldn't be too long," Kate answered, before placing her earbuds into her ears.

-----------------------

The rugged and weary walls stood surrounding me. They seemed so strong, yet so beaten from the elements. Cold air-filled every corner and warmth seemed to crawl its way in here. Darkness swallowed everything and seemed to make worries come into my mind of something unseen. Kate handed me a flashlight, and I quickly turned it on, shining the light all over the wall.

I turned around only to stumble on the jagged rocks beneath me. As I hit the ground, I felt the moist dirt hit my face, and sharp rocks pierce my skin.

"Owww," I whimpered, watching the shadow of a girl coming towards me.

"Imogen are you okay?" Kate asked, kneeling down beside me.

"Yeah, it just really hurt," I said, looking down at my palm watching my skin regenerate.

I never get tired of seeing that

"Make sure to follow us closely," Robert spoke, waving the light towards us.

We started moving through the gloomy cave, I felt the dampness in the air. In the darkness ahead, my hand can feel the moisture seeping through what seems to be rocks on the side. I turned around because I believed I heard something behind me, only to be blinded by Sawyer's flashlight.

"How far are we going," I asked, feeling my hair on my arms start to rise. I could hear countless noises, scaring me every single time. With every joint, I could hear Sawyer laughing behind me.

"From the research, we've read that the center of the cave should have the moonstone," Sawyer informed. Moonstone? I wonder what's its purpose, I know that it's needed for the ritual, but why?

"What's a moonstone?" I questioned.

"It's the key to breaking the curse on us," Sawyer informed us.

"Curse on us?" I questioned, furrowing my brows.

"When we break the spell, it will release all the power that was taken from us," Kate added.

"We are more powerful than we seem," Daenerys spoke "A 1000 years ago, a witch placed a spell on our families, making our power limited. The council didn't like the idea of us being so powerful and feared we would overthrow them."

"Why would we try to overthrow them," I asked, hearing Sawyer groan behind me.

"Sawyer, stop acting like a child! Imogen is just asking logical questions," Kate scolded, stopping in her tracks to turn around and give him a death stare.

"Back then they didn't have the technology to defeat us, so if we caused a revolt we would win but the technology has evolved greatly, they would be able to put on a good fight now," Robert informed us.

"We don't have to worry about the council, for now, our only target is Taisla," Daenerys commented.

"We have to find the moonstone before she does," Kate said, "We need the moonstone, our blood, and location where the original curse took place."

"From the thousands of books, I had Carter read-"

"You made Carter read them!" Kate exclaimed, cutting Sawyer off.

"Well, we had limited time, and I had to finish Lancelot. I just figured Carter could read and tell me all about it," He shrugged along, going in front of Kate and me.

"You kept using that as an excuse to not put the children to sleep," Kate accused.

"Let's fight on our own time," Robert interjected.

"Well, the moonstone is supposed to be in a well, deep in this cave," Sawyer said.

"We still got a long way, so walk faster," Daenerys flashed a smile.

--------

Our flashlights were glowing in the cave, making the darkness bearable. Robert stopped, causing a domino effect for the rest of us. The light coming from our flashlights revealed a stone slab well. I could hear the dripping water inside of the deep well.

There were chains connected to an old school windlass which seems long enough to bring one of us down. We walked closer, using the light to inspect how deep it was. I could see the grey-colored water, filled with debris.

"One of us has to go in there," Kate said as Sawyers walked back, putting his hands up in defeat. The rest of us kept looking at each other, waiting for someone to volunteer. My heartbeat pounded thinking about being alone in the well, but I figured when would be a better time to let go of my fears.

"I'll go in," I volunteered.

"Are you crazy? What happened if there snakes or bats down there!" Daenerys exclaimed.

Gee, well thanks for making my anxiety rise even higher.

"All possibilities but I can regenerate, unlike any of you," I said, swallowing the lump in my throat. Daenerys looked at Robert, who seemed to approve the idea, but Daenerys nudged his shoulder. I don't think she's too fond of the idea of me going down there.

"We will bring you down slowly if you start getting scared we will bring you right up," Robert explained.

"Okay," I nodded, exhaling the breath, I didn't realize I was holding. I stood up straight as Dany tied the chains around my body securely. I could feel my nerves tingling like being tickled with a small feather.

I sucked in my shaky breath, feeling my throat constricted. Panic rose like bile in my body, I could feel my grip become sweaty against the chains. Every time they lowered me into the well, my anxiety curled into my stomach. I tried to stare anywhere but down. Either way, I couldn't see where the bottom was.

Goosebumps slithered up my arms and legs like a snake as I reached the water. Hitting the water, feel like an electric shock, a burst if you will. I could feel my mouth quivering and my body shivering vigorously whilst attempting to untie myself.

"Are you okay?" Kate asked.

"Yeah, just freezing," I laughed through the pain. The chains released me from their grip, letting me fully sink into the water.

"Can you flash the light, please?" I asked. I saw all the lights reflecting on the water, it didn't help too much but it was enough for me to see and move the debris away from me. I started feeling around the well, through the cracks of the stone slabs. I started touching the bottom of the well, feeling around for any nook or cranny.

Underneath the water, I didn't feel the usually smooth slabs but inside a hoop. I tugged the hoop; I used my other hand to feel a box under the hoop. I lifted it from the water, seeing the wooden box. I inspected the wooden box, seeing a lock on it with needed a key to open it. It must be here somewhere.

"Did you get it?" Robert asked.

"Yeah, I'm just searching for the key," I answered. I felt around the bottom again, searching for the key. I heard a slithering noise and felt a weird feeling on my back. I turned to meet with a snake, causing a shriek to escape my lips.

"Imogen! Are you okay!," Dany yelled. I didn't have time to answer, I was so frightened from the snake. I kept quickly feeling around, seeing a wooden object flooding around. I grabbed it quickly, feeling a snake slithering on my arm. Instantly, I tried shaking it off, rushing to grab onto the chains. I wasn't going to waste time to tie myself, I didn't want the snake to get a chance again.

"Pull me up!" I shouted. It was so hard to hold myself up with all the shaking, my grip kept slipping each time. I could manage my breathing as I was getting pulled up. I closed my eyes, letting a sigh of relief out when I felt a pair of arms carrying me out.

"You must be freezing," Dany concernedly stated, rubbing my shoulders to build up some friction. Sawyer grabbed the box and keys from my grip. Once he opened it, he showed us the moonstone. The infamous moonstone was a glowing luminescent in the gloomy grey light in the shape of an oval.

"This is it," Sawyer said, viewing each side.

"We should start going, it's getting late," Robert said, glancing at his watch.

-----------

The sun had completed its tour for the day and had now been replaced by myriad stars. A low, waning gibbous moon hovered tenuously in the twilight firmament, bestowing a very dim light upon the land. I looked around the car, seeing most of the group asleep. Robert and I were the only ones awake. Should I mention to him my mother's plan?

"Hey, Robert," I said.

"Mmm," he answered.

"I want to discuss something with you," I admitted.

"Sure, kid, go ahead," he responded.

"I was talking to my mother the other day, and she mentioned a way for her to become the chosen one," I told him, fidgeting with my fingers. "She said she could get a witch to transfer my powers to her."

"There's no way for her to do that. You can't just give your powers away because you don't want them," He replied.

"She said while she was kidnapped by Taisla, that she overheard them mentioning a way of taking my powers safely. It involves a witch," I giggled. "Wow, really can't believe they exist."

"Taisla only deals with black magic, which will not end with you being alive." He said, feeling a sinister shiver go down my spine.

"My mother said that she wouldn't suggest it unless it was safe," I explained.

"Witches would only be able to use black magic to remove the power from you, resulting in killing you. Do you think that it's possible," He paused for a couple of seconds. " That your mother is working with them?"

"She wouldn't do that!" I exclaimed. She wouldn't trade me for herself, she always worked hard to take care of me. Could they be blackmailing her? But what could they hold against her? It's only Rebel and me.

"You're right, you know her better than I do," he commented.

"Yeah, I do," I whispered, glancing back out to the stars.
