Ferris Wheel
Third Person POV
There was one week that occurred annually, which brought about a new persona for the entire town. It was a scorching hot spring day; a perfect day for a day at the fair. Beams of sunlight day through the shadows of the blossoming, delicate trees, swaying in the gentle breeze. The sky was dotted with a few candy-floss clouds.
Imogen was up and early, preparing for the annual carnival. Imogen needed this, she needed a distraction from all the craziness her life has turned into. However, Kylie signed Imi and Franke to help organize the carnival. Imogen spent the night trying to come up with a reason why Frankie wouldn't be there and after the whole night; she could only come up with that Frankie had developed the flu overnight.
"I hope she feels better," Kylie sighed, holding an enormous clear bag full of stuffed animals. She followed Imogen, who was holding a clipboard, checking if everything was in place.
"Yeah, I made sure to check on her before leaving," Imogen said, not looking up from her clipboard. She felt guilty lying to Kylie, but she already had one friend in danger. Her heart wouldn't be able to handle if she got Kylie dragged into this. "Now we just have to bring some prizes to the ring toss booth."
"Imi," Kylie called out.
"Yeah," Imogen glanced up to her beaming face.
"You know Rebel is really hot, I practically melted in my pants," Kylie winked.
"Umm, I'm not sure how to respond to that," Imogen laughed, shaking her head while writing on her clipboard. Imogen felt a vibration coming from her back pocket, she almost forgot her phone was in her pocket. She pulled out her phone, checking to see a message sent from Lucas.
"I'll be right back, just drop off the bag at the ring toss," Imogen smiled.
---
"How are you doing," Lucas said, a concerned look written all over her face while rubbing her shoulder.
"Okay, just trying to be a normal high school girl," Imogen stated. Imogen couldn't remember the last time her life was average.
"Oh, is that what we doing," A smile crept on Lucas's face, teasing Imogen.
"Yes, we are all going to be boring high school teenagers, who live in a world where your mother isn't trying to get you killed," Imogen responded, "Also no more mentioning of m-word," she pointed at him.
"Got it," Lucas answered, putting a thumbs up. He just wants her to have a great night. Imi has seemed distressed since her mother got kidnapped.
"Then later, you're going to take me to the Ferris wheel. We going to ride to the very top and you're going to kiss me. Making my heart flutter like a normal teenage girl. You see, the theme I'm going for," Imogen smiled, trying to bite her lip seductively.
"Yeah, I see and I'm liking it but shouldn't we worry about-," Lucas was cut off by Imogen's finger placed on his lips.
"Remember normal teenagers problems," she giggled, making Lucas's heart flutter in his chest.
-------
The sky is just a black sheet that's been poked with a needle one too many times. Faint music could be heard from beyond the tall grass, with the occasional happy screams suddenly piercing the air. The massive structures of the rides could be seen; roller coasters, Ferris wheel, helter shelter.
Imogen was watching some children running excitedly up to the ice cream booths. Ice cream wobbled perilously over the cones and dripped down their small fingers as they melted; some munched on brightly colored balls soft sugar strands that dissolved on the tongue. Remind Imogen of when Frankie would always try to steal ice cream from her.
"Imogen," Imi tore her eyes from the messy children, looking to the direction her name was called in. "The live band needs help fixing the sound system."
"How I don't know how to fix a stereo," Imogen nervously laughed. The carnival had been crowded for quite a while now and everybody kept asking Imogen for help.
"Hey, I can fix a stereo," a random tall student approached them. Imogen furrowed her brows, confused why this guy was eavesdropping. However, they disappeared when she noticed Kylie biting her lip and twirling her hair cutely.
"Yeah, for the band, just follow me," Kylie licked her lips, eyeing the attractive tall caramel man. Imogen shook her head and laughed.
-------
Drew stroll into the carnival, fingers laced with his date, Nina. Drew had a shimmering smile on his face. Being around her made him feel alright. Sometimes, he stays up at night wishing he wasn't using the girl but he needed someone to void the pain he's in. Nina made him feel happy, but he's never will be truly happy until he's with her.
Nina's sparkling eyes were fixed on the bumper cars. She dragged Drew's there before he had a chance to say no.
"Just be ready to get hit," Drew chuckled, shaking his head, poking his tongue in his cheek.
Nina bit her lips, eyeing him softly, "If anyone is getting hit it's you," she teased, her delicate smile on full display. They waited to reach the worker, show them their bracelets, and went straight to separate cars. Nina waved cutely at Drew, making his heart feel content at that moment.
--------
"I'm so hungry," Nina gushed, closing her eyes, inhaling the smell of fresh-made funnel cakes. The smell of turkey legs roasting made her mouth water and the delicious scent of the popcorn was almost unbearable. "Let's get that," Nina pointed at the booth with nachos, burgers, and hot dogs.
"Sure, anything you want," Drew answered, following her to the booth. He heard her start ordering amounts of food that could feed a group of five. Drew helped her, carrying the items she ordered but made sure to pay first. Drew wanted to find a more secluded area for them. He saw a magenta cone house. Drew opened the curtain of the cone house to reveal Frankie kissing Rebel, whose eyes were wide open.
Rebel found Frankie, strolling around the carnival like nothing ever happened. Rebel texted Imogen to let her know Frankie was wandering around, but he didn't want to lose sight of her. Frankie felt his eyes following her, turning around, meeting face to face with him. Frankie looked the same in Rebel's eye but he recognized a difference in her eyes, they were slightly darker shade.
"I'll explain everything but let's go somewhere more private, Okay?" Frankie smiled when Rebel nodded. She found the magenta cone house, opening the curtain to see it vacant. "So, what happened? Who took you?" Rebel questioned, watching her move around the empty house.
"Why do you assume someone took me?" Frankie said, walking around the compact room stopping right in front of Rebel. "Maybe I left myself," she shrugged her shoulders, a smile plastered on her face. "Did I ever tell you how handsome you are," she pouted, caresses the side on his face, enjoying his warmth.
"Are you sure you're ok-," Frankie leaned in connecting her lips with Rebels. She wrapped her hands around his neck, making the kiss deeper than before. Rebel was stunned. Why on earth is she kissing me? He needed to stop this.
"What the hell! Frankie?" Drew said, his eyes screamed confusion. Frankie pulled away, smirking while Rebel felt many emotions, confusion for the most part. Rebel cleaned his lips, storming out of the room to go get some fresh air. "Hello earth to Frankie," Drew said, trying to get Frankie to open up. Frankie kept her piercing eyes on him but didn't answer him, irritating Drew even more by the second.
"That's it," Drew said, shoving the food into Nina's arms who was struggling to hold everything. "We have to go find Imogen," Drew said, grabbing ahold of Frankie's wrist, causing electricity to run through his body. "What the hell?" He grabbed her wrist again, pulling her towards the exit, but she forced her arm out of his grip.
"No, don't touch me," Frankie fumed. Drew noticed her brown eyes turned to a red shade. Her hands were clenched by her side.
"Frankie, I'm sorry, just calm down," Drew replied, placing his arms in front of Nina, trying to shield her for what's coming.
"Don't tell me to calm down," she raged, breathing heavily, walking back and forth in the room. "Drew please help me," her eyes changed back to their normal color, " I don't know what's happening to me," she pleaded before her eyes changed back to a coppery red shade.
Drew slowly walked up to her, "Tell me how to help you," Fear ran through Drew's veins. Shit can hit the fan at any moment. He knew in his chest that this wasn't going to end well. "Frankie?" Drew placed his hand around her wrist.
"I told you, don't touch me," she raged, fixing her gaze upon Nina who's on the verge of tears. Frankie started moving her hands in a circular motion, chanting ancient words towards Nina. Nina suddenly felt her chest tighten and crack, dropping all the food on the floor. Nina's hands rushed up, trying to pull away from the invisible grip on her neck.
"Frankie, stop it you're going to kill her!" Drew exclaimed, shaking Frankie's body but her concentration was on the girl. Her body convulsed, trying to squeeze out air. Her eyes felt engorged as veins erupted and her vision blurred as if her soul was leaving her body. "Frankie Please!" Drew yelled, shaking her even more, trying to break her concentration from her.
Abruptly, Frankie stopped her chanting. Her eyes returned to its natural chocolate shade. Nina started coughing heavily, breathing in and out, trying to reach for her inhaler. Drew ran towards her, rubbing her back as she regained her normal breathing. If she doesn't stop, we're going to have to kill her, Drew thought. He doesn't know how this thought popped into his head, but he knew he needs to end it. Frankie stared at them with horror in her eyes. She almost just killed someone.
"Please," Frankie cried, feeling guilt tugging on her heartstrings in her chest. "Leave me alone, I don't want to hurt anyone," Frankie whimpered, rushing out of the suffocating room.
-------
"I just saw Frankie, and she isn't the same anymore," Drew told Imogen and Lucas, after texting them about needing to talk. "Someone is controlling her, she tried to kill my girlfriend. I don't even know how to explain to her what just happened. I'm confused myself," Drew said. "She has magic powers."
"Who do you think is doing this to her? My mother?" Imogen brows furrowed, trying to consume the knowledge she just learned.
"She's playing dirty, what can I say," Drew shrugged his shoulders.
"She's probably so confused. We need to find her before things escalate," Lucas explained, tracing back and forth, rubbing his chin.
"Yeah, and kill her," Drew spatted, causing their eyes to focus on him.
"You're not going to kill Frankie!" Imogen exclaimed, looking over at Lucas for some support. Lucas shook his head at the insane thought that just left his mouth "Absolutely not, we aren't killing her."
"Do I need to remind you that she almost killed my girlfriend," Drew explained. They need to understand that to keep us all safe we have to kill her.
"It's not an option," Imogen demanded, feeling herself start to get upset.
"It's not going to end well!" Drew said, watching their reactions.
Lucas walked up to Drew, "We aren't killing her," Lucas walked out of the class, trying to come up with a solution. Imogen stormed out after Lucas, avoiding Drew's gaze. "It's the only way."
--------
Bright lights spilled into Frankie's vision and she blinked at the sudden brightness flooding her senses, coupled with the eerie chill feeling. She was so frazzled from the confrontation with Nina, tears were trickling down her face. She wanted to disappear from the crowd, away before she could attack someone else.
Frankie was dragging her feet down the dirt pavement, tears continuing to trickle down. The lights weren't as bright by there, so Frankie decided to sit down and collect her thoughts. It was like an entire persona took over her when she attacked Rebel with her lips. Her heart pounded in her chest as she crumpled against the dirt ground.
"Hey, are you alright?" A curled hair caramel boy asked, watching over her tear-stained body.
Frankie lifted herself up from the ground, rubbing the particles of dirt off herself. Frankie's vision started to blurry, feeling herself getting taken over again. The boy bent down trying to console a sobbing Frankie but he soon felt fear rush through his veins, noticing her red shade eyes.
"I'm so sorry," Frankie sobbed, feeling a slow throbbing make its home at her temples, blood rushing through her, and a sudden surge of violent emotions overtaking her judgment.
"What?" The boy's eyes squinted from confusion. Suddenly, instinctively, her arm shot out, fingers clenching around his throat before he had time to react. He had the agonizing urge to just scream and walked away, but his body was glued to the ground. Black rage overpowered Frankie, pressuring her to chant out those ancient words once again. A cloud of white smoke was draining out of the boy's body, being consumed into Frankie's mouth.
The boy's eyes rolled back, collapsing to the ground, his skin turning flakey and gray. Frankie regained her normal vision, horrified by what she caused. Her hands covered her mouth, feeling her breath hitch as it all hit her. Tears blurred her vision, and she cried harder, her chest growing tight as bile rose in my throat. She dried her eyes, seeing the familiar green emerald eyes in front of her.
"He's dead. I killed him," Frankie whimpered, holding herself. "What's wrong with me?" She cried out, shaking her head.
"Hey, Hey, it's okay," Drew said, rubbing her back. "I can help you," Drew had a genuine smile plastered on his face.
Her eyes locked on his. "You can?" She sighed out, feeling relief that possibly the whole situation could end.
"Yeah, I have to," he answered.
Frankie was feeling the tension float in the room, a murderous tension."What are you going to do?" She breathed out, darting her eyes back and forth between the ground and him.
"The only thing I can do," Drew smiled, moving Frankie's curls out from her face. "I'm going to kill you," he caressed her face, while his other hand moved forward, exposing the knife in his hand. Frankie's eyes widen along with her mouth, getting up and moving away from him.
"Please don't, I don't want to die," she begged, feeling her eyes start to become glossy.
"It's easier that way," he said, rubbing her arms, trying to come her down.
"No, don't say that," she cried, pacing back and forth. "Just help me, please," she begged, her eyes feeling swollen and irritated; her chest is aching. Drew nodded at her request, "Please just help me. Please, please." Drew engulfed her into a hug, shushing her pleading.
"It's gonna be okay," Drew told her, rubbing her curly hair. He reached up with the knife, ready to plunge it into her back. "Sh, sh, it's the only way," he whispered into her ear, the dagger inches away from piercing her back. The knife knocked out of his hands to the ground from Lucas's friction, Imogen eyed him with horror.
"Wow, Lucas," Drew scoffed, raising his hands up in defense. Imogen walked towards Frankie, trying to comfort her, but Frankie pushed her off. Lucas stared at Drew with disgust in his eyes, Drew really just tried to kill her. Frankie was hysterically crying, feeling herself start losing control once again.
"Why did she do this to me?" Frankie sobbed, putting her fingers through her hair. Her vision became blurry again, just like when she killed the boy earlier. Imogen gasped at the sight of her eyes changing to a red shade.
"Guys, what are you doing? The carnival is that way," Kylie interjected, pointing towards the carnival. "Frankie? I thought you were sick. What's Ethan doing behind you? Is he dead?" Kylie gasped, brows furrowed, seeing her friend turning into a stranger. Frankie's eyes fixated on Kylie, her rage taking over once again. Ancient chants left her lips, causing fire to form on the floor going towards Kylie.
"Kylie! You have to get out of here," Imogen shouted, staring at her with horror.
"I can't move," Kylie cried out, swallowing the lump in her throat. She tried moving her feet forward, but they were stuck like cement. Lucas ran towards, trying to push her but she wouldn't budge. The fire kept crawling and crawling closer to her. Kylie's vision became glossy, hearing her heartbeat boom in her ears.
Imogen felt tears well up in her eyes, but she couldn't just stand there and do nothing. She dashed forward to Frankie, grabbing her arms and shaking her violently. "Frankie! I know you're in there! Please stop, no one is going to hurt you." Imogen pleaded, tears streaming down. She kept shaking, breaking her concentration, which angered Frankie.
"Please, Frankie, I love you, you're my best friend! I know you're stronger than them," Imogen cried, watching Frankie's eye turn back to chestnut color. Tears spilled from Frankie's eyes, realizing she lost control once again.
"Kylie, I'm sorry," Frankie cried as Imogen pulled her into a tight warm hug. "I never wanted to hurt you or Ethan," she admitted, crying onto Imogen's shoulders. Imogen let go of her, started moving away, but before she could Drew tried jabbing the knife back into Frankie. Imogen got in front of Frankie, defending her, wondering what the hell was making Drew act like this.
Drew's raged filled eyes stared into Imogen's tearful ones. Backing away, realizing he won't be killing Frankie tonight. "She will die, It's only a matter of time," he spat. Lucas bolted towards him, grabbing the collar of his shirt roughly. "Yeah, well, it's not happening tonight," Lucas ordered.
Lucas pushed him when he let go of him, walking towards Imogen and Frankie. "I'll help her calm down. You should go explain everything to Kylie," Lucas said, pointing towards a shivering Kylie who was next to Ethan's dead body. Imogen nodded and went to Kylie.
--------
Imogen was at her locker, grabbing her materials to take home. She stopped for a moment, admiring her picture with Frankie, wishing she never was a part of this problem.
"Hey," Lucas said, diverting her attention to him. "Frankie is okay. I found Rebel, and he's taking her home to rest," he informed her.
"What about the guy who," Imogen whispered the last bit, looking around to see no one near them.
"It's taken care of," Lucas sighed, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Do you think Drew is right? That it won't end well for her?" Imogen questioned. What happens if they can't control her?
"We will make sure he's wrong," Lucas said, rubbing her shoulder.
"I just can't believe what this day turned into," Imogen sighed, placing her head against the locker.
"Not your normal day, huh?" Lucas sighed, stroking her long locks.
Imogen let a small giggle escape her lips while shaking her head. "It's stupid to think that it could be. I mean, nothing in my life is normal," she said, reaching into her locker for her sweater. "My best friend is a witch, my boyfriend has superhuman strength and I'm the chosen one who has groups of people waiting to kill me," she faltered, placing her books into her bag.
"I'm sorry," Lucas whispered, feeling his heart sink down, watching her in this state.
"It's not your fault Lucas, it's no one's fault. We didn't ask for any of this," Imogen shrugged. Lucas lifted his hand up to caress her face, showing support. "I'm fine," she whispered, putting her hand on his wrist, looking down to see their names on each other's wrist. "I'm fine," she assured, fighting back the tears from falling. "It's just-... You know what, I'm fine," she said.
Lucas didn't believe it, but he didn't want to dwell on it. "I'll call you tomorrow. Okay, Lucas," she showed a smile, but in her eyes, tears were almost escaping. "Good night," Imogen said, walking away from him.
--------
Imogen's deep slumber was interrupted by her phone ringing repeatedly by her bed. She moaned, forcing her hand from out the blanket, searching for the phone on her bed stand. Once she grabbed it, she answered the incoming call.
"Hello?"
"Imi, it's me," he said.
"Lucas? What time is it?" Imogen yawned, fluttering her eyes open, taking in all the darkness.
"It's near dawn, come outside. I want to take you somewhere," he said. Imogen stretched her limbs when she got up. She grabbed a small cardigan on her hanger and started walking down the stairs while rubbing her eyes. Her feet slipped into the first pair of shoes she could find and headed out.
-------
"Lucas, what are we going here?" Imogen questioned, looking around to see the closed rides from the carnival. Their fingers intertwined with each other, walking towards the Ferris wheel. "We could get in trouble," Imogen stated.
"Well, my father knows one of the guards that work here and I asked if he could do me a favor," he said, as we got closer, you could see the guard standing by the ride. "So, I could kiss my girlfriend at the top of the Ferris wheel," he smiled as lights flickered on.
"Lucas...-," Imogen trailed off, admiring the lights shimmering in the darkness.
"We have to take these moments, Imogen, with Frankie becoming a witch, the ritual approaching fast, and the "M" word," Lucas whispered. "I moved to this town, wondering when I was going to meet you so I can start my life with you," Lucas cooed, his thumb stroking Imogen's cheek. "We can't forget to live it," Imogen smiled lightly against his touch.
They walked towards the entrance of the ride, their fingers interlocked. The guard smiled, opening the gate to let them in. He made sure to buckle them in correctly before letting the ride start.
"Hold on tight if you get scared," Lucas joked, as Imogen went closer to him. The ride abruptly reached the top causing Imogen to laugh and looked down, admiring the view. Lucas was stroking her cheek, admiration in his eyes from her sparkling smile. "What?" Imogen asked with her eyes gleaming under the lights.
Lucas didn't even notice a smile appeared on his lips. "It's just so great to see you laugh," he answered as they both simply cherished each other. Imogen leaned forward and enveloped her bottom lips with his. He licked gently at her lips, feeling the moist warmth of his mouth and tongue against hers. They both pull away slowly, leaving just their foreheads connected.
