Elixir

Third Person

Imogen walked back along the narrow pavement surrounded by weed-covered grass. Instead of the yard being filled with blooming flowers, they were brown. No lushness or sparkling emerald found, instead there were tangled spiderwebs and overgrown weeds. Once Imogen reached the door, she used the knocker to batter on the door. Imi kept fidgeting with her foot, waiting for a response.

Suddenly, the door flung open, and Katherine emerged from the inside. "Well, well, funny to see you again," she smirked, moving to the side of the door and letting Imogen enter. Imogen clutched onto her purse and dragging her feet in the house. The walls seemed to be losing their color, having the color coat painted before appearing. "I made some hot chocolate for us. Just go straight down the hall," Katherine pointed down the cramped hall.

Imogen followed her directions, going down the hall which led to the kitchen. She made sure to come here with no one's knowledge. If she told Lucas or Drew about her idea, they would just try to back her out of it, but they wouldn't be able to change her mind this time. Imogen pulled her chair out and sat down, waiting for Katherine to join her.

Soon enough, Katherine entered the room, going straight to the stove and pouring a cup of hot chocolate for both of them. Katherine placed it in front of her and sitting in the sat across from her. The aroma coming from the hot chocolate caused Imogen's mouth to water. She knew she was going to at least enjoy the drink.

"So, you mentioned on the phone that you wanted to learn more about Taisla," Katherine broke the ice. She reached over the chair to the fridge, taking out a bottle of whipped cream. She squeezed a whip of it on top of her drink and offered it to Imogen.

Imogen grabbed the whipped cream, pouring a huge amount of it on top. "Yeah, haven't you been alive as long as Taisla has?" Imi asked, using her spoon to scoop up the whipped cream. Katherine released giggled while slurping her cocoa.

"Well, not exactly but, my sister was," Katherine admitted making Imogen's eye go wide.

"You have a sister? You never mentioned that before even when you explained how you become immortal," Imogen said, swirling the melted whipped cream into the cocoa.

Another giggle escaped from Katherine's lips. "Well, she really isn't my favorite thing to talk about," she mumbled, bringing the cup up to her lips and drinking it. "Does anyone know you here?"

Imogen shooked her head. "No, I made sure to wake up before anyone else," she answered, tapping her fingers against the table.

Katherine raised up from her chair walking over to her cabinet and reaching for a container filled with crackers. "So, where should I start," she said, relaxing back into her chair.

"Maybe with your sister," Imogen nervously giggled, taking a sip from her drink.

Katherine shoved a handful of chips into her mouth. "My sister was born in 1464," she mumbled, cleaning her fingers on the napkin. Imogen almost choked on her drink, that's insane to be alive that long she thought. "When my mother gave birth to her. She almost died from complications which scared my father. Which led to his lifelong research on how to be immortal."

Suddenly, Imi's phone started buzzing diverting her attention away from her. She looked down to see Lucas calling. She sighed, her finger hovering over the answer button, contemplating whether to acknowledge the call or not. Before the ringing could end, she pressed the accept button and brought it up to her ear.

Immediately, Lucas barbarian her with questions. "Where are you? Are you okay?"

Imogen slowly exhaled, her eyes blinking quickly. "Yeah, I'm okay. I'm just hanging out with Katherine."

"Katherine? Why? Is she threatening you again? I'll be on my way if she is," Lucas said, motioning for Drew in front of him to stop talking. They have both spent the morning worrying about the girl.

"No, Lucas I'm fine. Katherine and I need some time alone," Imogen replied, massaging her temples with her hands.

"Katherine can't be trusted! How do we not know she's working with Taisla?" Lucas asked. All jarring questions but she's the only option I have left, Imogen thought.

Imogen glanced towards Katherine, exhaling the breath she was holding. "I trust her okay," she answered, sending a smile towards her.

"You can't do this alone," his voice softened.

"I'm a big girl Lucas. It's my decision and please respect it. Also, make sure Drew doesn't do anything stupid. I'll be in touch," she said, hanging up on the call.

Drew furrowed his brows. "Did she just hang up on you?"

Lucas still had the phone up to his ear, left shocked from the exchange. "She did," he replied.

Drew pushed his fingers through his brown curls. "She's lost it," Drew uttered.

Lucas's fingers were fidgeting with his phone, while his eyes darted at the floor. "If anyone could convince Katherine to join our side and kill Taisla. It would be her," he said.

"Frankie's the way to kill her, Lucas," Drew protested, "She thinks she's dead. We have a chance with her."

Lucas leaned back on the couch, his foot tapping furiously. "She'll kill herself in the process. Imogen is looking for another way," he said.

Drew's emerald eyes narrowed towards him. "Her way will get her killed!" he exclaimed, lifting his body up from the couch. "So we need to find her and stop her."

Lucas's eyes darted from the ground to Drew, jolting up from the couch. "No, you need to back off," Lucas said.

"What?" Drew complained, shorting the distance from Lucas.

"Look I don't like this anymore than you do. But we need to trust her and let her do her thing," Lucas insisted, glancing into his eyes and trying to read his expression.

Drew rolled his eyes. "That might be your plan but mine's better," he commented, starting to walk away from him.

Lucas brutally gripped his arm, keeping him from leaving. Drew's jaw clenched, biting his tongue to keep himself from doing anything. "I said back off!" Lucas warned as Drew tried to keep his composure.

Katherine lifted up from her chair, leaving the kitchen and entering into her room. She strolled into her closet, reaching for the box hidden behind her clothes. The box was hidden behind the hollow wooden planks, with a single tug, which would reveal her hidden space. Her fingers slipped into the holder, walking back to the kitchen. She dropped the box on the table, causing the dust to land all over it.

A cough escaped from Imogen's lips as her hands waved in front of her face. "What's that for?" Imogen asked, inspecting the badly aged box.

"I thought the story would be more interesting with photos," Katherine replied, removing the lid from the box. Her hand reached into the box, grabbing the delicate paper and handing them to Imogen. There was a light blue bow, holding the photos together. Imogen slowly tugged, watching the bow unravel. "After almost twenty years of studying, my father finally figured how to make our family immortal. My mother's days were coming to an end but because of Taisla..she lived."

Imogen glanced at the first picture, revealing a photo of Katherine and her father. When she flipped the picture around, the initials K.V and O.V written on it. "Isn't this you?" The girl looked exactly like her, well besides the hair. In the photo, she had raven-colored curls, a small button nose, hollow cheeks slightly flushed and plump lips.

Katherine smirked as she gazed into the photo. "No, that's my sister-- my twin sister Katherine, technically."

Imogen furrowed her brows and said, "You have a twin? How? Weren't you born twenty-three years ago?"

"Hush," she placed her finger on lips. "I will get there! Back to what I was saying. Taisla was the witch of the town and my father put all his faith on her. Gladly, it worked but my father wasn't satisfied with that. He wanted immortality!"

"Quit beating around the bush," Imogen said, turning over to the next photo. It was a picture of her sister and taller raven-haired colored boy. "Who's this?"

Katherine gazed down at the photo, smiling at seeing the familiar boy. "That's my older brother. Did I forget to mention him? His name was Silas. After Taisla saved my mother, she obviously wanted something in return. The help in killing the chosen one," she admitted.

Imogen scrunched her nose. "So this has happened before?" She turned to another picture, seeing her sister along with another short black-haired girl.

"See the chosen one was a girl named Elisa who my brother was in love with. Back then, these stupid tattoos," she pointed at her wrist. "Didn't exist. Taisla wanted both my sibling to help slaughter her. My brother was conflicted, if he didn't help Taisla would release her rage on our family." Katherine planted her hand into the box again, pulling out a book on their family story.

The next photograph was a picture of her brother along with the chosen girl. They were both dressed up, in those antique outfits, most likely attending a party. You could see how happy they were together, sad to know that their happiness would be ripped apart.

"My sister Katherine was in love with Taisla and she would do anything to make her love her back. That's when the feud started between them. My sister was fine with killing his lover if it meant she would win Taisla," Katherine said as her fingers glide on the pages, gradually turning them. The first page in the book started with her grandparent's life story.

"Well, evidently Elisa didn't die because if she did then Taisla wouldn't be after me," Imogen stated, turning over to the next photo. The photograph revealed a photo of her sister and Elisa, both laughing when the photo was taken.

"You're right. Taisla instructed my sister to watch over Elisa. This led to their friendship blossoming and Katherine started feeling guilty for lying to her. Eventually, she started working with my brother, trying to figure out a way to keep her alive. Without causing consequences to our family, " she answered, finally reaching the page involving her parents.

"So they saved her?" Imogen asked.

"Somewhat. Katherine wanted Elisa to do the ritual since it would cause fewer waves for us but my brother didn't want to risk that. Even after Katherine made her own potion that would ensure that she would live. However, my brother made the grave mistake to not trust my sister and run away with Elisa," she explained.

Imogen let a giggle departed from her lips. "This story just keeps getting crazier and crazier," she snickered, her fingers turning to the last photo which revealed her sister dressed in a black gown with a tear-smeared face.

"Taisla was furious! She planned to murder my brother once she found him and completely disregarded my sister. Leaving her broken and my brother's death didn't help with her misery. Elisa was forced to surrender her powers to her. After my brother's death, my father turned my family into immortals, but my sister tried killing herself several times."

Imogen glanced towards Katherine, who seemed nonchalant from the entire story. "So where is your sister now?"

"She's dead. She begged for Taisla for mercy and she killed her," she confessed, causing Imogen's eyes to widen.

"How? Wasn't she immortal?" Imogen asked.

"Taisla was able to take that away from her. Years after her death, my parents begged to have their immortality taken away or be blessed with another baby. Which is where I enter, but I never met Taisla. I remember overhearing her name when I was younger, but that's about it," she stated.

Imogen tied the bow around the photos, trying to preserve the photographs from crumpling. She successfully achieved, gently setting them back in the box. "Do you know of anyway to kill Taisla?" Imogen asked, praying that maybe there's a secret they don't know.

"There's one way to kill a supernatural being like her. At the hands of the servants of nature themselves," she explained.

"A witch... If they can channel that much power," Imogen sighed, sinking back into her seat. "But it would kill them."

"We can only kill her when the ritual is complete, and she's in transition, absorbing your powers. That's when she'll be at her most vulnerable. A witch with enough power can kill her."

"No matter what Frankie is the key to this," Imogen sighed. Is this really the only way to save us from Taisla, she thought.

"Yes, but," Katherine jolted from her chair, leaving Imogen alone in the kitchen. She walked back to her room, going back to the hidden compartment. Her hands reached for the light string, revealing a wide black rectangle box. She carefully carried it back to the kitchen and placed it carefully on the table. Her fingers reached for the lock, entering the code and opening it. The clear crystal jar filled with pink colored liquid. "This is the elixir that my sister made her. She burned the recipe to avoid getting caught."

"So I will drink the elixir and let Taisla finish me off. Then Frankie will appear to kill her and I will come back to life," Imogen smiled, admiring the quality of the glass. This would keep Frankie and the rest of her loved ones safe, she thought.

----

The long-haired brown girl groaned and tried getting her boyfriend up from the couch. He kept tuning her out, praying she would get annoyed with him and leave. "Why are you so cranky today," Nina whined, pulling on Drew's arms. She let go of his arms, reaching behind her for alcohol. She poured some in a glass and handed it to her boyfriend. Maybe this will make him feel better.

Drew sighed. "Just go, please," he groaned.

"Come on, I've been trying to make you hap-,"

"Go!" Drew spat, the anger filling up in his eyes. He used his empty hand to massage the mirage his girlfriend caused.

Tears welled up in her eyes, she quickly whipped them away. "Fine," she whispered, grabbing her bag that was laying on the couch. She wrapped the purse on her arm and stomped out of the room. Her tearful eyes met with Lucas's who entered the room, his eyes shifted towards Drew was annoyingly shaking his head.

"Tired of your little girlfriend already?" Lucas blurted, watching Drew sipping his bourbon.

Drew kept his eyes fixated on the fireplace in front of him. "Don't start with me, Lucas. She's just my distraction," he admitted, raising his drink to his lips.

Lucas scoffed, he couldn't stand Drew's inappropriate behavior. "She's a person. You're victimizing her." Lucas raised his brows and turned away to depart from the room.

A snicker escaped from Drew's mouth as he tilted his head. "You should be thankful she's here. She keeps me from going for what I really want," Drew admitted, his eyes filled with amusement, and a smirk plastered on his lip.

Lucas swung around and sneered. He started walking closer and said, "Your right. Thank you. For being in love with my girlfriend." His demeanor changed. Everyone with an eye could see Drew has been in love with Imogen for a while now. But no one has ever acknowledged it until this very moment.

Drew roughly placed his glass against the table, hearing a click when it landed. He used his hands to lift himself up from the couch. "And there it is," he smirked, slowly strolling towards the blonde boy.

Lucas's whole body was tensed but he tried to hold on to the small peace he still had. "And there it is," he said, felt the last shed of the peacefulness inside him vanished. "You know, you can be in love with Imogen all you want..." he walked closer to the smirking emerald boy. "If it means you will keep her safe. But I have the one thing that you never will," he commented, his blood boiling seeing his smugged face.

Drew rolled his eyes, letting another laugh escape from his lips. "Oh, yeah?" Drew answered, getting even closer to him. "What's that," he said, a mischievous smirked on his face. While Drew's eyes expressed amusement. Lucas's eyes expressed rage, he wanted to beat the shit out of the boy.

The room was silent for several moments as the fury grew in Lucas. His eyes stared at Drew, turning dark with every second that passed. "Her respect," he blurted.

Drew winded his arm back and slammed his fist right into Lucas's cheek. The sound cracked through the room, along with the thudding of Lucas's stumbling legs. Lucas came back at him, cranking his arm before releasing his full raged on Drew. Throwing Drew across the room, his eyes murderous went after him again. They both grunting and groaning trying to get another punch in that was until someone entered the room.

"Stop!" Imogen yelled, storming into the room. She was outraged from what has happened between the two boys. Her eyes soften when connecting to his blue eyes, he never raged out like this, she thought.
