Heart of the Demon (1)

(Demon Urata x Human Sakata)

~Mini series~

————————

People were wandering around the town, going on with their peaceful lives as the, as they chatted with friends and family. The sky was clear as it was a nice, relaxing day for them. The area was filled with calm and tranquility. Until a couple of them turned their heads when they heard the sound of someone throwing something on the floor.

"You damn tanuki!"

They could see a small tanuki running by, holding a piece of jewelry in its mouth while the shop owner chases after them. Some kids around the area laughed at the sight, while others shrugged it off and continued on their merry way.

The tanuki ran through the crowd occasionally glancing back at the shop owner and letting out a small noise that sounded like it was laughing at the person's irritation. It then spotted a small opening in some fences and went through, looking back to see the shop owner stop and tense up before angrily mumbling and turning around the leave.

The tanuki continued to laugh mischievously as footsteps approached it. The creature looked up and let out a cheerful noise as it sprouted black wings and flew into the person's arms, the item still in its mouth.

"Good job Yamadanuki," The male said as he took the jewelry from the tanuki's mouth, "that pathetic shop owner wouldn't even have a chance at getting you."

"Ah~ it's fun messing around with these senseless humans and watching them act all tough and angry but cower in seconds."

"You're such an annoyance that I question whether you're a toddler or something."

The male made an annoyed huff as footsteps approached him while Yamadanuki let out a delighted noise, happy to see the figure.

"Eh~ it's not like I hurt that piece of trash."

The older figure sighed as he snapped his finger, the jewelry disappearing from the male's hand, who sighed in annoyance, before snapping his finger again and the two were now inside a castle. The older figure sat down in the throne while the male just looked to the side in boredom.

"I excepted more from you," the older male said as he crossed his arms, "not a childish, little brat."

"Again, I didn't hurt it. I could've just taken their soul if I wanted," the short brunette stated as he crossed his arms, annoyed at being scolded, "but I didn't."

"Although us demons are known for being chaotic, we still have certain rules and limits." The older figure narrowed his eyes as he looked at the short brunette, "you should understand that the most."

"Can't you just continue being king, I'd rather not deal with that–"

"Urata Wataru," the short brunette groaned as the older figure pinched the bridge of his nose, "you need to learn how to be a responsible demon before you rule."

"Yeah, okay," Urata nonchalantly said as he turned around, "well see ya–"

"And by doing so you'll become someone's familiar."

"Eh?!?"

The short brunette quickly snapped his head to look at the stern older male in shock. Yamadanuki just snickered at her owner's expression.

"No way! I'd rather die than having to listen to some low life." Urata retorted as the older figure rolled his eyes.

"Maybe this'll teach you to stop being a pest."

Urata just glared at the figure, irritated at the king's statement.

"Just keep that thought in mind and know that as a familiar you'll have to obey whoever it is that summons you, you'll still be able to perform your other duties as a demon."

"So what, I'm just going to follow around some spineless idiot while I wait for weak pests to summon me for their greedy desires." Urata bitterly said as the older figure nodded his head.

"Who summons you is not up to me, so you better hope that you at least get someone that can tolerate your bitterness," The older figure said as he got up and began to leave the throne room, "and you're not allowed to use your demon powers on them."

Urata groaned as he kicked the floor, irritation was written all over his face. What a bother. He glanced at Yamadanuki before grinning.

"Like I'd listen to that old geezer, let's go back to messing with these entertaining toys."

Urata walked out of the throne with a mischief smirk on his face as Yamadanuki followed behind.

*****

"I'm telling you guys, demons are real."
"As if."
"It's true, my brother said he saw one and–"

Sakata zoned out his classmates' comments as he glanced out the window. The school day was boring and he just wanted to go home. The bell rang as if answering the redhead's prayers and the students began to get up and leave.

Sakata walked out of the school, passing the school gates and about to head home until he felt something tackle his leg, making him stop.

"Eh?"

He looked down to see the energetic dog wagging his tail, smiling at the redhead.

"Aw, you came all this way to see me Kenchan~" Sakata cheerfully said as he crouched down and pat the dog's head.

Kenchan let out a cheerful bark before giving the redhead a pleading look. Sakata just stared at him for a sec, sighing as he took a small treat out of his bag, handing it to Kenchan. The dog happily received the treat while the redhead took out his phone to see the text he had gotten.

"Looks like niichan wants us to stop by the store for something," Sakata got up from his crouched position and began to walk, "let's go Kenchan."

The dog barked happily and followed his owner, walking a few steps until he heard something in the bushes. Kenchan carefully walked towards it, curiously tilting his head as he sniffed the bush. He stayed silent until something jumped out of them, startling Kenchan.

Yamadanuki let out a small snicker at the scared creature and ran off, not before taking the treat from Kenchan's mouth. Kenchan stood still for a couple of seconds before running after her, barking in annoyance. Sakata turned his head to see Kenchan run off chasing the tanuki.

"H-Hey, Kenchan!"

The redhead followed the two animals, apologizing to the people he'd accidentally bump into and occasionally sighing as it didn't seem like Kenchan would stop at any minute. Sakata was starting to get a bit tired after running for a while, slowing down as he got closer to the white fence that separated the town and the forest.

He coughed a bit, due to having run almost across the town, and saw the tanuki crawl into a hole in the fence. He figured that Kenchan would just give up at this point but the small dog was determined to get his treat back and went through the hole too.

"S-Seriously?!?" Sakata shouted in exasperation as he watched Kenchan continue to chase the tanuki into the forest.

The redhead wanted to go after Kenchan, but was hesitant at crossing over the fence. No one really goes over it.... He stood there wondering what to do before ultimately deciding that Kenchan was more important. He quickly climbed over the fence and ran into the forest.

Though he immediately regretted doing so as he had no idea where the two animals went. He stopped in his tracks, looking back to see the town slightly visible behind the dense trees before glancing at the forest.

"Kenchan!" Sakata shouted, hoping his pet would respond and come back, but got no reply.

"Hey Kenchan come back here!" Sakata shouted louder before having a small coughing fit.

The forest was still silent, except for the occasional cough or two from the redhead. Sakata sighed as he glanced one more time back at the town before heading deeper into the forest. He carefully walked around, making sure he didn't trip on any random tree roots and stuff, while calling out to his pet.

"Hey Kenchan where are you?"

"Kenchan~"

"Kenchan!"

After aimlessly walking around the tall grass and trees, he heard a faint bark just a bit further ahead. Sakata was about to go before hesitating again as he thought of it possibly being another animal and not Kenchan. A couple more soft, faint barks led him to the conclusion that it was his pet so he began to walk towards it.

He found himself in a small, clear area, spotting Kenchan barking at an abandoned building. He noticed the hole in the door, leading him to believe the tanuki went through there. It was smaller than the other one so he thought that Kenchan couldn't fit through it, either that or Kenchan was just afraid of entering.

"Please don't run off like that again." Sakata said as he picked up the small dog.

Kenchan whimpered before looking at the building again and letting out another bark. Sakata sighed as he looked at the building.

"You really want that treat back...the tanuki could've already eaten it by now."

Kenchan made another bark, showing that it wasn't giving up.

"I sometimes wish you didn't have that much determination..."

Sakata placed his hand on the doorknob, slowly opening the door as he whined to himself. Why am I doing this?

He carefully looked in, the building just had one room that was decorated with some furniture, but most of it was old, dusty and worn out. He looked around to see some candles that were placed on a nightstand, the wax wasn't melted, almost looking as if it was new.

"Maybe we should leave." Sakata nervously said as he turned around, feeling a bit creeped out at the scene.

Kenchan jumped out of his arms and walked around the room, sniffing the furniture as he did so. Eventually he found the treat that was dropped close to the nightstand. Kenchan grabbed it and let out a cheerful bark.

Sakata just shook his head in amusement, he then noticed a circular drawing on the floor. It was drawn in what the redhead could only assume was blood giving its red color. Symbols and signs were decorated around the circle.

"Alright we're leaving now," Sakata stated, freaked out by the circle, as he walked towards Kenchan and picked him up, "niichan must be wondering where I am."

Sakata began to head out, but found himself tripping because of a loose floorboard. Kenchan quickly jumped out of his arm to avoid getting crushed as the redhead fell onto the floor. Parts of the wooden floor were broken which resulted in his hand getting scratched by the pointy pieces sticking out.

"O-Ow...." Sakata quietly whined as he sat up, looking at the cut on his hand before glancing at his pet in concern.

"Are you okay Kenchan?"

The small dog just gave a small soft bark in response, not seeming to be bothered much as he was happily chewing on his treat.

A small drop of blood fell from the redhead's hand and onto the ground, onto the drawn circle. The red color turned green as the candles lit up with a bright, red flames, the circle was then illuminated in a light green glow.

Sakata scooted back a bit while Kenchan hid behind the redhead. Soon a brunette appeared before him. He could see the curled black horns as the wings stretched out, their green eyes were glowing as they looked at the redhead.

Urata just stared at him with an expressionless, annoyed look. Another worthless and idiotic human. The short brunette just crossed his arms while the redhead just tensed up.

The short brunette just stayed silent, trying to figure out why the human before him hadn't spoken up yet. People who usually summon me are ready to say their pointless wishes and stuff. The two remained silent, with Sakata still trying to comprehend what just happened while Urata was getting irritated at each passing second.

"Oi idiot, say something before I get bored and just decide to take your soul."

"W-Wait–?!?"

"You really have no patience, do you?"

The two males looked at the older figure that had walked into the building.

"This idiot summoned me for no reason, how do you expect me to react?" Urata angrily said as he turned to glare at the redhead.

"I made him summon you." The older male said, causing the short brunette to snap him head to look at him in disbelief.

"Huh?!?"

"Congratulations Sakata, this short-tempered demon is now your familiar." The older male said as he glanced at the redhead.

".....e-eh?" Sakata could only let out a confused noise as he looked back and forth between the two. I'm starting to think that I should've just gone home...

"What?!?" Urata floated and grabbed the older male by the collar, glaring daggers at the male, "I never agreed to this!! Also, didn't you say that you had no say in who it would be?!?"

"I only said that because I knew you'd get even more upset at it." The older male calmly said, not worrying about the demon that looked like he was ready to kill him any minute.

"No fucking way am I going to be this idiot's familiar."

"C-Can I have a say in this?" Sakata finally said, wanting to find a way to get out of this situation.

"It's final." The older male said as he snapped his finger, this led to the short brunette being thrown off him and crash into the wall.

Urata just groaned in the pain as he rubbed his head, growling in anger as his glares turned even more deadly.

"Here Sakata," a silver cross necklace appeared around the redhead's neck, "it's usually used to keep demons away but I've altered this one for your use."

"U-Um...?" Sakata confusingly said as he looked at the necklace, still trying to comprehend everything that's happening, "so...what does it do....?"

"When you hold it and mutter a chant it'll make the brat either stop whatever he's doing or do what you want. Use it whenever he's causing trouble or being a pest," the older male said as he walked away, "it also lets other demons know that for now your soul is off limits."

The redhead just watched the older male leave before glancing at the necklace and then at the short brunette, who was still rubbing his head in slight pain at being thrown to a wall.

"That bastard....." Urata muttered as he glared at where the older male was. He got up and looked at the redhead, who tensed up, with the same deadly glare.

"This is all your fault idiot."

"Huh? Me?!" Sakata shouted in exasperation, "I-I didn't want any of this!"

"Maybe if you didn't trip like the idiot you are then I wouldn't have been forced to be your familiar."

"H-How was I suppose to know that tripping would lead me into this situation?!?"

"Oi, shut up."

"Hey–"

Kenchan barked at the tanuki that suddenly showed up, still annoyed at his treat being taken. Yamadanuki just snickered as she flew onto the flying short brunette's shoulder.

"For once I hate you for being mischief." Urata glared at the tanuki as she snickered again.

"Kenchan....this is also your fault," Sakata muttered to himself as he gave his pet a small annoyed glance. Kenchan didn't seem bothered by the expression and just licked his owner's cheek.

Urata then noticed that the redhead's hand was still bleeding, he sighed as he grabbed it, startling Sakata a bit, and closed his eyes. A green glow surrounded the redhead's hand as new skin began to slowly cover up the cut, leaving nothing but a small scar.

"Eh.....thanks?" Sakata said in an unsure voice, the short brunette just rolled his eyes as he crossed his arms.

"Don't bother, I only did that so that bastard doesn't whine and complain about how I'm not doing what I need to do as a familiar and blah blah blah."

"You really hate this...."

"No shit idiot."

"H-Hey!"

Kenchan let out a soft bark, causing Sakata to tilt his head in confusion. The pup gestured his paw towards the window, Sakata looked and saw that the sky was starting to get dark.

"A-aah! Niichan must be worried that I'm not back yet!" Sakata frantically said as he got up before pausing, "er, I don't know my way back.... also, how do I explain to him about this...."

Urata watched as the redhead panicked and pondered about what to do. He rolled his eyes before snapping his fingers, the two were now suddenly in front of the redhead's house.

"Eh?"

Sakata just stared at the building in confusion, the short brunette then grabbed his chin and lifted it up, forcing the redhead to look at his direction.

"Just to be clear that I'm only going to act nice just to get this over with quickly so don't bother thinking much about it."

Sakata looked at the short brunette's scowl and shining green eyes before nodding his head, which made Urata smirk in satisfaction and let go.

What did I get myself into?
