Beauty of the Ocean #1

Scientist Urata x Mermaid Sakata

~Mini series~

————————

The ocean was glimmering under the moonlight, the sounds of waves softly crashing into the rocks completed the peaceful atmosphere. There were always a few people walking around the shore at night, feeling the cool breeze flowing in their hair, giving them a calming feeling. Each star shined brighter than the next, anyone who looked at them could feel a sense of hope.

Whenever Urata would go to the beach with his dad he'd always looked at the ocean in curiosity.

Curious about what could be hidden underneath.

Wondering if there were any other mysteries waiting to be found.

Every night on the beach was tranquil and filled with a sense of relief. However, this night was different for a young green eyed brunette.

He'd end up finding the answer to one of his mysteries he could think of.

"Be careful with it, we don't want to harm it even further than it already it."
"Should we tell others about it?"
"Maybe it's best to let it recover first."
"Right now just make sure it's able to make it back to the lab."

Urata looked back to see what the commotion was about, noticing that some people were huddled around something. He walked towards them, unable to see through small crowd he looked for his father and tugged on his sleeve to get his attention.

The older male looked down at his son, who stared back with a curious gaze before pointing towards the crowd. The short brunette's father just let out a chuckle at his son's curiosity and crouched down so he was the same level as him.

"Right now I can't tell you anything because it's top secret. But once we get back, I'll let you see the first person to interact with it."

Urata beamed and just nodded his head. The older male smiled and ruffled his hair.

"Now, how about you go look for shells that you think are pretty and we can bring them back with us."

Urata wandered back to the shore, listening the sounds of the waves and the few mutters of his father's assistance in the distance. He didn't really feel like picking up shells, being as there weren't many around in the first place.

He just went back to sitting on the sand and staring out into the ocean, letting it catch his attention while the adults did what they did. He turned his head to glance back at the crowd after a few minutes of silence had passed.

They were covering whatever they found and carefully securing it. He caught a glimpse of a fish-like tail, raising his curiosity even more. They seem too secretive for it to just be some fish. After hearing his father call for him, he got up to head to the older male.

His father told him that they were getting ready to leave; while the others began to pack up Urata secretly went to the car to see that the back door was open. He peeked in to see a small tube connected to something that was laying down with most of its body covered except for a small part of its head.

Though upon closer inspection he saw that it looked like a person; crouching down to meet eye level, Urata softly patted the 'person's' head, realizing that they their hair was wet, as if they were just submerged in water.

The 'person' flinched a bit, causing Urata to retract his hand. The figure moved their head a bit, soon eyes filled with the same curiosity as his stared right back at him.

Urata found himself lost looking at their eyes, although they were red, he could see the beauty of the ocean in them.

"Urata, where are you?"

The short brunette turned his head to the sound of his father. He looked back at the person, who seemed scared, he whispered that they'll be okay and left the car quietly to where his father was, still remembering the red eyes that shone bright like the stars.

He felt a bit guilty secretly looking behind his father's back but curiosity got the best of him. He'll be able to fully see the person once they get back.

I wonder if they'll stay for a while.

Urata followed his father as the two headed to the lab. The short brunette was curious why there weren't many people around. His father must've noticed his confusion because he began to speak.

"Technically, the higher ups don't want anyone except those that are working on the case to see," he looked down at the short brunette, "that also means you."

"Then why are you bringing me?" Urata questioned as his father ruffled his hair.

"Because you already saw what it was so no point in not allowing you see, plus I did say that you'd be the first to fully meet them."

Urata tensed up, realizing that he had been found out. His father just chuckled as they entered the lab, the lights were dimmed, making the room dark but still able to make out the objects in the room.

The older headed to a large tank, Urata could've mistaken himself being in an aquarium had he not know he was in the lab. The size of the tank was as big as one would see in an aquarium, he wondered when they managed to build it.

His father went to the key pad and inputed some numbers, it caused only the light above the tank to light up, allowing Urata to see what he saw earlier.

He could see some fishes swimming peacefully in the tank but the thing that caught his eyes the most was the fish tail that was a mixture of red, orange, and yellow, resembling close to a flame. He then saw the red hair that he had patted before and soon met the same red eyes that were filled with curiosity.

The 'person' stared back at the male before seeming to swim a bit further back, as if trying to back away from the glass. Urata saw how the bright ruby-like eyes changed from their curiosity to uncomfortableness.

"He's a bit shy, that's to be reasonable due to the state we found him." Urata's father said as he looked at the redhead, "even when he gained conscience he was still wary and didn't like us approaching him."

"So why bring me here?"

The redhead just watched the two interact, trying to comprehend his new situation.

"Well, you did always wonder what lay hidden beneath the ocean, and here's your answer."

The older male smiled as he watched the redhead lose focus on them, playing with the fish in the tank.

"I wonder if he's one of a kind or if there are more like him, it'd be nice to know so we can make sure they're safe."

Urata just watched the redhead seem to drift off into his own little world.

"So does he have a name?" Urata asked as his father smiled.

"We just kept saying random names, but he seemed to react more when we called him Sakata so we kept that as his name."

"I guess it suits him."

Urata went back to watching the redhead get curious about the things around him.

"Well, that's enough for now," his father returned the room to the dimness from before.

The older then handed a small key to the short brunette, "they said I'm not allowed to let you interact with him but I think it'd be better if he had some company close to his age."

"Just don't lose it and try to come here in secret. They really won't do anything if they find out but I don't want to deal with them scolding me."

"I'm not an idiot, I won't lose it." Urata said as he placed the key in the pocket of his hoodie, his father just chuckled.

"Well, it's time to go back, we should let him rest too."

The two began to walk towards the exit, the redhead glanced at them, feeling a small sense of sadness watching them leave.

The door closed behind them, now the redhead was alone in the room.

Well, not fully alone as he had the fish by his side, but he still enjoyed at least hearing others around him.

He glanced up to look at the ceiling, there was a catwalk connected to the top of the tank, allowing people to stand on it and interact with him.

He remembers that a few people tried to get him to come up but he was scared and stayed at the bottom, still recovering from the trauma from before.

Sakata began to feel lonely after a few hours passed, he curled his tail a bit and hugged it as he 'sat' in the corner of the tank, closing his eyes as he tried to ignore the sound of silence.

Urata twisted and turned all over his bed before sighing as he sat up. He had tried to go to sleep but was unable to, mostly cause of his curiosity over the mermaid that they found, but also due to the fact that he just couldn't sleep.

He glanced out his window to see the moon was still shining brightly, the moonlight lightly lit up the room, a ray seemed to beam onto the keys as if trying to tell him something.

He looked at the clock, showing that it was around 2 a.m., then back at the keys. After a few silent moments of pondering the male quietly got off his bed.

He stood still as a small creek resonated throughout the room the moment his feet had perfectly planted onto the floor.

Urata continued to stay still in his spot even as the room returned to its peaceful silence, waiting to make sure no one reacted to the noise.

After the moon's light shined on his back for couple of seconds the male figured he was in the okay. He grabbed the keys, quickly putting on his slippers as he left his room, quietly and slowly closing the door as to not wake up anyone else in the house.

He made sure his steps were soft against the wooden floor, occasionally glancing back at the doors he passed to see if anyone might've heard him.

He had always gone off to the lab on his own that he knows his way there like the back of his hand. He smiled victoriously as his sneak plan was going smoothly.

He made it to the glass sliding-screen door, past it was a small pathway that led to the lab, it'd be a quick and easy trip.

Except for the fact that the sliding door was always a struggle to open for his 9 year old body as it kept getting stuck.

And that it always made a loud screech when opened.

Urata slightly puffed his cheeks in annoyance as he remembered about this cursed door.

Irritated that he forgot about it's existence now when he usually remembers it.

And everything was going just fine.

Urata knew he could just leave through the front door of the house and go around but he already made the terrible decision of coming here.

And he didn't want to walk all the way back, that could lead to him being caught.

The short brunette sighed as he decided to open the door, knowing fully well that it could, and will, end in a disastrous turn of events.

But he didn't want to admit defeat, even a 9 year old had some pride.

He just silently prayed, wished, and begged for it to not screech.

"Please, please, please," Urata whispered to himself as he tried to move the door.

And it just happened to be that he was given mercy because the door opened with no problem or sound.

Urata let out the breath he was holding as he smiled triumphantly.

He stepped onto the porch and closed the sliding door, but not fully, he didn't want to try his luck in opening it again.

He just hopes no one ends up waking up and walks into the room to see the door open, that could be troublesome.

Urata looked up at the stars, then at the beach that was in the distance. He made his way along the path, listening to the crickets chirping songs, the sound of gravel quietly crunching under his feet.

He was grateful that he was still in his hoodie, the day was full of warmth but now that night has fallen the wind left a chilly presence.

He arrived at the lab, again quietly opening the door and peeking in to make sure there wasn't a sign of anyone that could possibly be there.

Urata entered the lab and tried to recall which room the mermaid was in. He glanced around at the small exhibits of the sea life as he walked towards the room.

He found himself standing in front of a door with with a lock on it.

Digging out the key from his pocket, he inserted it in the lock and twisted it, smiling as he heard the small click. He pushed the door, taking the key off, and stood there as the door closed behind him by itself.

The room was dim but still allowed for some objects to be seen, just as it had been when they left earlier.

He tried to remember where the lanterns were, they had some in the labs in case the power somehow went off, while looking in the cabinets he tried to not make too much noise.

A small cheerful gasp escaped his lips as he found one, he turned it on, it gave off enough light for him to see the objects clearer.

He looked at the tank and made his way towards it, noticing the redhead looked up from his curled position.

Sakata tilted his head as he watched the short brunette place the lantern on the ground.

Urata pondered on what to do, realizing he hadn't thought much of it so he sheepishly smiled. He decided to press his hand against the glass.

The redhead stared at him for a while, trying to analyze what the male was doing, before slowly, and timidly, making his way towards the male.

Sakata carefully pressed his hand against the glass, where the short brunette's was, confusion was on written on his face but it was soon overwritten with a smile.

"Umm," Urata nervously said as he had nothing from the top of his mind come up. I don't even know why I decided to come here, not like there's much to do.

"Well, you seem more social now, I'm surprised you're not that scared of me."

Sakata just watched the male's expression turn into slight embarrassment, a small blush barely visible on the short brunette's cheek.

"I don't even know why I'm talking to you, you don't understand me anyways." Urata said as he sat down on the floor.

Sakata shook his head as the short brunette rose his eyebrow.

"Eh? You can understand me?"

The redhead nodded his head as Urata gave him an unsure stare.

"If you're lying I'll make sure you regret it," Sakata slightly backed up at the words as Urata rested his cheek on his hand, "well, I'd be an idiot for not believing you when you react to my words."

"So you can understand me but can't speak."

Sakata sheepishly smiled as if to apologize for not being able to talk, the smile was something that Urata found cute.

"So...." Urata thought about what else to say, "do you remember anything from before?"

Sakata seemed to ponder over it before nodding his head.

"If you do then why'd you have to think– actually never mind. Are you the only mermaid out there?"

Silence enveloped the two as the redhead tried to figure out how to respond.

Sakata then pointed to himself before pointing up a few times. Urata just stared at him in confusion, the redhead did it a few times until the short brunette seemed to understand.

"So there's more of your kind," Urata gave him a pitied look, "do you miss those close to you?"

Sakata nodded his head, the solemn expression clearly seen in his eyes.

"Well, I think they'll eventually let you go, until you seem better that is." Urata gave the brunette a soft, gentle smile, "You can go back to them."

"It's kinda interesting to be able to meet a mermaid," Urata stated, "I kinda just started to think they were a myth."

Sakata slightly pouted at the comment, which caused Urata to laugh a bit.

The redhead cheered up a bit after hearing the male's small laugh. They spent a couple more minutes talking- well, more like Urata talking while Sakata tried his best to respond.

"I guess I should go now, they might possibly wake up and notice that I'm gone." Urata said, causing the redhead to stare at him with wide eyes.

Sakata was happy to have someone interact with him normally. The short brunette saw him as a person, kinda, rather than a subject that he is to the others.

And now that person was leaving.

He didn't want to be alone again in the silent, dull lab; he had felt the loneliness that was surrounding him earlier fade away once the short brunette made his presence.

Urata was like his light in the darkness, the jewel of his sea.

The short brunette noticed the redhead's distressed expression; it managed to stab his heart to see the redhead's eyes, that shined in brightness, have a distraught gaze to them.

"Eh, it'll be fine. I won't leave you completely." Urata stated, though the redhead still didn't seem convinced.

The short brunette pondered on what to do, he then noticed the staircase from the corner of his eyes. He walked towards it, confusing the male.

Urata made his way to the catwalk that was next to the top of the tank. He gestured for the redhead to come up, which he did, Sakata tilted his head as he surfaced from the water.

Urata held out his pinky with a cheeky grin on his face.

"I promise I'll come visit you everyday. It'll be our little secret."

Sakata stared at the short brunette's hand before shyly taking his own pinky and wrapping it around the male's.

Sakata immediately beamed, being too happy that he ended up hugging the short brunette's stomach. Urata felt his face heat up immediately at the action.

"O-Oi! G-Get off me!" Urata quietly shouted, "you're wetting my hoodie!"

The redhead let go and looked down in guilt, Urata wanted to punch himself for making the male upset.

"I-It's okay, I-I'm sorry for shouting." Urata quickly said as the redhead looked at him.

The short brunette could feel himself get lost the those shining red eyes; it was like looking into the night sky, a small galaxy full of hope and brightness.

"I'll see you another time," Urata said as he patted the redhead's hair, Sakata was filled with pure joy.

Urata then made his way down the stairs and towards the exit. Sakata watched him leave, still slightly upset but happy that he made a friend.

Urata turned off the lantern and put it back in its spot to avoid suspicion. He glanced back at the male, waving goodbye at the male, and headed out the door.

With a soft thud, the door closed and he was now back in the chilly summer breeze.

Looking up at the sky, the stars now just reminded him of the redhead's eyes. He covered his small blush with the back of his hand.

Urata looked at the key in his hand and made a small grin.

Happy to have met one of the ocean's many mysteries.

Making his way back to the house, the only thing on his mind was the redhead.

He just hoped that his hoodie would be dry by the time he got back to his room.
