Chapter Three (3)

||: Will Hell Just Freeze Over! :||

"So ___... Ya got a boyfriend yet?" Jett wiggled his eye brows at me. I arched my eyebrow at him and playfully smacked him.

"Hell no, you should know this." Jett gave an exasperated sigh.

"Oh come on, it's been almost 3 years now and high school's a'most over for us." I just shook my head at him and stood up from the library table that we were sitting at.

"I'm not interested in romantic relationships. You know I just can't get attached to someone as closely again." Jett's eyes changed from one of exasperation to sympathy. A year after Jett and I met, I decided to tell him about my past, what happened on that fateful day, the reason why I'm so distant. He listened intently, then took me out for ice cream afterward to help cheer me up. He's been the closest thing I can get to a sibling.

I looked up at Jett to find a small crook up in his mouth, the smile he gave me when he knew what I was thinking.

"Don't worry ____, I won't leave you alone." My eyes began to tear up, but I held it back and put a small smile on my face.

"Thanks Jett. I'm putting my trust in you." The bell for lunch to start rang and we all got up and walked to the lunch room. Evelyn was waiting by the door for us. She became a close friend of mine, my father would've called her a "tsundere," which I think fits her to a T.

"Gosh you guys are so slow! I've been waitin' here for a minute and 30 seconds! Normally I only wait for a minute!" She's also picky. We sat at a table in the corner and began chatting and eating, until the intercom came on. An announcement wasn't normal during this time and so the lunch room fell completely silent.

"We have a grave announcement to make to all students. There has been a shooting in the neighbourhood nearby and the police informed us that the perpetrators have fled towards the school, as such we are going into a hard lockdown. Everyone please calmly go to your next classroom and await further instruction from your teachers. This is not a drill. I repeat, we are going into a hard lockdown, please go to your next classroom and await further instruction. This is not a drill."

Everyone began scrambling out of the lunchroom. Jett and Evelyn stood up with a look of panic and began grabbing their stuff. I sat there, my hands slowly moving up to my head, shaking violently. I began to hyperventilate as memories from my past began to plague my mind. I could hear muffled voices shouting, but I couldn't hear anything they said. All I could hear was the gunshots and the shouting of my own voice and father as my sister was shot down.

"Dammit, Evelyn, she's in her own world. Pick up her stuff I'm carrying her!" Jett shouted as panic began to grow throughout the school. Jett threw ____ over his shoulder and brought her to her class. Jett stayed with her, and instructed Evelyn to leave her stuff and quickly get to her class. Evelyn did as she was told, too freaked out to argue.

I was rocking back and forth, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. I softly whispered my sister's name over and over to myself, holding back my tears. I shrieked when I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to see Jett. My breathing began to slow itself down as the teacher walked over to me. Luckily, it was the one teacher I had learned to trust, Mr. Ludwig Beilschmidt. He is the only teacher I've ever told about my past, as he is an old friend of my dad.

"___, are you alright? I know it must be hard, but I need you to calm down. You are safe here in this school. We have good security, and your friends and teachers are here to protect you. No one is going to hurt you." I nodded slowly, wiping away the tears that had begun to fall from my eyes. "Thanks Mr. Beilschmidt."

Jett sat down next to me and gripped my arm in a comforting way, giving me the same smile from earlier. One of sympathy and protectiveness. The intercom came on again. The audio crackled a little until there was the ringing sound of a gun shot. Everyone in the classroom screamed. "Uh, ah, ciao ciao~! To everyone that can hear me, which is everyone in the school, I do believe that there's a girl here named ___. Hand her over now and I'll leave this school immediately, disobey me and I'll send my men around to shoot up your classrooms."

I physically shuddered and whimpered a little, but I still stood up. Everyone stared at me. Jett whispered to me.

"___, please, don't go. I'm sure it's just an empty threat. There's no way they would actually go around shooting people." Hearing those words, I flip around violently.

"And what would you know Jett. You haven't lived my life. You all live in a bubble of safety and protection, never worrying about who has the will to shoot, never knowing what the smell of death is like, never knowing what it's like to lose someone in front of your eyes. Leave me alone. I'm going." Just as I unlocked the door and opened it, a hand was thrust in front of my face.

"I can't allow one of my students to go to dangerous men alone. I will come with you." I knew Mr. Beilschmidt wasn't asking, he was demanding, and I didn't want to get him mad. He's scary when he's mad. I let him follow me out. We began quickly approaching the main office, where the intercom system is located. Just as we were about to turn the corner to the office, the intercom came to life again. A slightly higher pitched voice came on.

"Tsk tsk, silly teacher. You really think we'd just let you waltz in here with the girl. Hehehe~ You're sorely mistaken. Take another step and we'll kill your precious little principle who is just so kindly letting us use this intercom of yours~!" Mr. Beilschmidt attempts to take a step, but I stand in front of him.

"I'm sorry but from here on out, this is my fight." With those words I turned around the corner. The office had glass instead of proper walls. Most of it was broken, and shards of glass and bullet shells littered the ground. Even from here, I could smell blood. I wanted to gag. There were people in suits with many different types of guns. They looked like typical mafia people. I stepped through the door, avoiding eye contact of everyone in the room and entered the intercom station.

"Fratello~ She's here~!" The voice came from a cheerful looking man, who had almond coloured hair and goldish-brown eyes. A smile seemed to be ever present on his face. Don't trust him. Those that always smile are sinister.

"It's 'bout damn time, I got tired of waiting." A man stood up, which I assumed was the cheerful man's "fratello." He had very similar features to the cheerful one, expect with a darker auburn hair and shiny olive eyes. He seemed the type to never smile. The outwardly sinister kind.

"I'm here, so please release my principle and leave everyone else alone!" I could here my own voice echo in the hallway. It seems he wanted to broadcast our conversation to all of the school.

"Hmm... I'll think about it. You did make us wait, and I'm a very impatient person." I think I might have heard something snap a little in my head cause before I knew it, I whipped to the cheerful man and pulled the pistol right out of it's holster and aimed it at the "boss."

"I am here, and I will go with you, so you will listen to me." My hands were shaking violently, and I know he saw because he began to laugh uncontrollably. I could tell this wasn't good as some of the men began backing up.

"Now you're the one making demands? I think not girl. Say... have you ever used a gun before?" The silence after the question was so severe you could hear everyone's slight movement. My burning look did not waver from the man, but my lip quivered.

"N-no..." The man began laughing harder than before.

"You're an honest one! I like it. But you've wasted ever more time, so I think I'll hurt that little teacher of yours who is still in the hallway. Boys? Light 'im up." Before anyone could move, a shot rang out and a small billow of smoke leaked out from the barrel of my gun.

"You will not touch him." The man in front of me touched the side of his face, which had blood dripping from the cut the bullet made. He licked his fingers and sinisterly grinned at me.

"Ya know what, ragazza? You're feisty. I like feisty. Stand down men. We're leaving." My heart beat slowed a little at his words. No one will get hurt. I am going to take responsibility. I will protect everyone. I'm sorry Jett, Evelyn, Mr. Beilschmidt... I'm sorry for saying hurtful things. I hope you will realise that I am doing this to protect you. I'm sorry... Before the men could grab me, I shouted out to the still-on intercom.

"None of you will be hurt. Those of you who like me, hate me, and don't know me. I thank you for making my high school years the best years of my life. And Jett, sorry, I can't go to graduation with you. Thank you and Evelyn for being my friend. Goodbye everyone." And with that, I was ushered to all the black cars waiting outside the school. Guess I should pray for Mother's safety while I can still think properly... Oka-san, I hope your safe. And goodbye.

As we drove, I could hear sirens catching up with us, but I knew, these guys would not be caught. I held onto the safety bar for dear life. If this is Hell, I really wish it would just freeze over right now.
