[Toonie's POV]
I looked down at my invitation to the fourth annual Smash tournament. "I wonder if there'll be any more newcomers this year..." I spoke to myself. This was my second year going to the Smash tournament, and as excited as I was that I was invited again, I also wanted more people to challenge.
"Toon Link! You-a made it!" I heard a familiar plumber's voice. Mario wrapped an arm around me, "So-a glad you could-a come again!"
It's like his accent got thicker from last year... I thought. "Glad to be back." I said, "Say, uh, will there be more challengers coming? I mean, I enjoyed last year's Smash, but it would get kinda boring battling the same people from last year..." I was a bit afraid to say this since, y'know, Mario was a direct link to the Creators. One wrong move and who knows what could happen...
But Mario didn't seem like the kind of guy who would abuse his powers like that. Most of the Mushroom Kingdom, even Bowser, doesn't even seem like they would do that. I learned from last year that we only come here for good clean fun. Which is fine with me, since I just about wet myself from thinking about battling Donkey Kong...
"Why, I'm-a glad you asked!" Mario answered, "We actually-a dropped a few players from-a last year to make-a room for new ones this-a year." Wait, drop players? Sure, I wanted new ones but to drop others from the ballet?
"Must you rub it in?!" Someone growled. I remember that voice... Ness, was it? He wasn't dropped, was he? No, he wouldn't be here if he were dropped...
"Don't-a mind him..." Mario said, then leaned down and whispered, "He's a bit upset about a certain someone having to be dropped..."
"Who?" I whispered back.
"You mean you haven't heard? We dropped Lucas. And Ness isn't very happy about it..." Lucas... I remember him. He and Ness came from the same game, and they rarely separated from each other... Heck, sometimes they would even go "train" together by themselves, but it was pretty obvious what they really did... So Ness was mad that Lucas was dropped? Huh... It probably hurts him, not having his best friend(?) around... I would probably hate if my mate got taken away, too... Mental Note: Be careful when battling Ness...
"Oh!" Mario said, "Speaking of-a newcomers, here comes the last-a one right now!" I followed his eyes to see a small boy -- finally, someone smaller than me! -- running towards us.
"Sorry I'm late..." The boy panted when he made it to us.
"No-a problem! Welcome to-a Smash, Villager!" Villager? Was that really his name?
He let out a puff of air, then looked around. "Wow...so this is Smash..." It wasn't perspective; he really did look younger than me. Sounded younger, too...
"Yes, would you-a like a tour?"
"YES!" Villager yelled, then cleared his throat, "I mean, yes." This was what I was up against? Ah geez... Might as well get ahead of the game since I'm here...
"Mind if I join?" I chimed in.
"Ooohhh, you must be Link!" Villager said, then began poking my face, "Say, your eyes are bigger than. I thought they would be..." Speak for yourself...
I swatted his hand away from me, "Heheh, I'm actually Toon Link!" I bent down to where we were the same height, "So you're one of the newcomers, huh?"
"Toon Link?" He gasped, "I know! I'll call you Toonie!" He climbed on my back, then my shoulders.
"H-Hey!"
"Ohhh, I like it up here! Let's get onto that tour, shall we?"
I gave Mario a 'Help me' look, but he didn't seem to notice, "Ah, yes! Now, a couple of-a the fighters are-a still preparing things..." He began to walk, pointing out construction while talking.
"Onward, Toonie!" Villager yelled, holding onto my hat and pointing off in the direction Mario went off in. Let me guess, this kid's Final Smash is annoying you to death...
[Later]
Holding onto Villager's legs so he wouldn't fall off my shoulders, I followed Mario as he gave a tour of the new Smash grounds. I'm actually glad I took the tour, as I found that there were changes -- subtle, but still changes -- from the last year. The most noticeable one being that everything seemed brighter, not all gloomy and dark.
"Hey, Toonie," Villager said from above me.
I made a noise bewteen a sigh and a groan, "Yes?"
"What game are you from?"
He doesn't know? He must be from one of the newer games... "I'm from one of the many Legend of Zelda games, Wind Waker."
"You're the main protagonist?"
I nodded, though it seemed pointless since he was above me, "The Hero of Winds." I pulled out my Wind Waker, showing it off. "Watch this..." I preformed the Song of Passing, and it suddenly turned to night time.
"Whoa! That's so cool!" Villager said, looking around, giggling at the confused looks on the other character's faces. He might've been annoying, but his laugh sure was adorable...
I turned it back to day time, just as Mario turned to scowl at me. "No using your-a powers until-a battle, TL."(TL was what most of them called me.)
I hid the Waker behind my back, "I don't know what you're talking about." He glared at me, then tossed a fireball at me, nearly burning my foot. "Hey!"
But he had already turned back, "I have no-a idea what you're-a talking about... Anyway, back to-" he continued showing Villager around.
"You okay?" Villager asked, clearly not paying attention to Mario.
"I'm fine..."I responded, rubbing my foot.
"Are you sure?" He hopped off my shoulders to look at it.
"Positive." I picked him back up, then stopped myself and dropped him. Were you about to put him back on your shoulders? I felt my cheeks heat up.
"Ow..." He groaned, rubbing his head, "What'd you do that for?"
"I..." Before I could even think of an answer, a huge shadow loomed over us.
"T-Toonie!" Villager yelled, jumping up and hugging me tightly. I turned around, seeing a familiar ape.
"Don't worry," I said, "It's just Donkey Kong." Villager whimpered against my torso, hugging me tighter. DK waved invitingly. "See, he just came to greet you." I put Villager on my shoulders, making him about the height of DK.
"Oh..." He instantly sounded relieved, then giggled, "I'm sorry I was afraid of you! And thanks for the greeting!" Donkey Kong smiled and waved again, which Villager happily returned. Then, DK made a gesture for us to follow him.
Hesitant rather I should take Villager off my shoulders or not -- in the end I decided not to -- I followed DK to where the Brawl Board was. He pointed at one of the first round brawls. Him versus Villager.
I wonder how Villa will pull that off... I looked back at the board, seeing I was against Ness first. Annddd there goes the second thing I was trying to avoid...
"I'm against you first?" Villager asked, which Donkey Kong nodded at. "And all first round battles are a week from now... Well, I guess I should get training!" Donkey Kong nodded, waved goodbye, then left. "He was nicer than I expected." Villa went back to talking to me.
"You'll find that about all the people who come to Smash," I said, walking away from the board, "I was afraid of a good amount of them at first, but I soon learned they were all actually pretty cool."
"Hey, Toonie?"
"Yeah?"
"Would you mind training with me?"
"No, I wouldn't mind, Villa." I had already begun walking to the training grounds.
"....You... You just called me Villa!" He squee-ed.
"Wh-wha...? No I didn't..."
"Did to!"
"Did not!"
"Did to!"
"Did NOT!"
