02 - What have I done?
-Evelyn-
I stood on the sidewalk, perfectly still. I couldn't believe I did it, my heart pounded in excitement as the energy reacted, and happily pulsed inside of me. I smiled at myself proudly, I couldn't wait to tell Martha and....Abe. My heart dropped, Abe would have been so proud at me, probably would have hugged me and shouted to all of New York city that I finally left the apartment by myself without causing a blackout on the block, out of utter fear.
I shoved away the aching pain in my chest, I need to deliver this to Martha. I reached into the hoodie pouch, and the envelope was crumbled with old water stains that washed the return address, creating a black blob. The mailman put in the mailbox, it was addressed to Lawrence Benson, which was one of Abe's fake identities that he uses for mail. So Hydra couldn't track us, well at least for now.
-------
The streets were crammed with bodies, bumping in each other and staring ahead with an unchanged sour expression on their faces.
I squeezed my way through the hoards of people, apologies rolling out of my mouth like it's in my nature to apologize. But it was second nature, Hydra always made sure that you were always sorry.
"Sorry. Sorry, Sir! So sorry ma'am!" I whispered out as I stepped on the shoe of a woman in a nice business suit as I tried to worm by her and a young thin man that bobbed his head happily to the music blasting from his headphones.
The woman's baby pink lips curled into a scowl as she glared daggers at me. "Watch where you are going, stupid girl," she hissed out, strolling past me.
I glanced down and nodded. I tugged my hood farther over my head, trying to cover my face as tears began to blur my vision.
Stupid Girl....
"You stupid girl! You destroyed this mission and disobey orders! You are just an useless bitch!"
The hollering voice of my old commander ringing in my head, I remember how angry he got with me when I wandered off (Mostly to talk Abe in his lab) to random areas without supervision. And even got more furious, when I would tried to speak to the emotionless man with the metal arm that guarded my cell at night couple of times.
I stared down at my hands, concealed in thick black materialistic gloves designed for me and my 'gift'. They were designed to keep the energy to in check so If I have a 'moment' and we don't have an 'accident' as Abe liked to put it. But I knew that it translated to 'keeping your powers to check so you don't accidentally murder someone'.
The aching pain began to throb again in my chest as I looked down at my hands, blinking back tears. I don't remember a time that I didn't see them as normal for holding, grabbing, and shaking like a regular person, even the whitest lie couldn't convince me. I was feared my hands because of the power flowing through my long slender fingers with such grace yet so monstrous, I was feared what would happen when energy is too much for me to handle. What will happen?
Suddenly I feel a slight shove on my leg as two little boys raced past me, giggling as they chased each other. "Rory! Danny! Please take it easy!" A young woman with fiery red hair jogged past me, trying catch up with the two rambunctious boys jetting down the busy sidewalk.
I faintly smiled at the playfulness of the boys, as a happy warmth filled me instead of the dreaded icy one that I have felt for so long. Children are so innocent, always blind to the evils that the world around them possesses, but sadly the children don't stay pure. As the years go by, the evils of the world creeping their heart. Either to consume them or remind them of how damaged life really is.
The two boys laughed as they started merrily pushing each other at the end of the sidewalk, grinning ear to ear at one another. The darker skinned boy gave a very hard shove, which caused his paler friend to tumbled back, the boy tripped and fall flat in the street.
My heart sank as a large semi truck speeding down the street, oblivious to the fallen boy in the lane. The young woman saw the truck and screamed out as many passerbys gasped in horror and shock at the boy laying in the road.
The world seemed to slow as I stood there on the sidewalk, staring at the pale boy helplessly in the street as the truck headed straight toward him. His big brown eyes filled with terror as he laid there on the pavement frozen in the fear seen in his eyes, the eyes that once held so much childish mirth.
"Someone! Please save him! Please!" Cried out the woman, being held back by other people on the sidewalk so she didn't also end up in the street. Tears running down her face, leaving long black streaks of mascara down her fair face as she sobbed and pleaded for someone to save the boy's life.
My heart hammered in my ribcage, beating a melody of panic in my chest. "Someone please! He is going be killed!" The woman screamed, ignoring the bystanders trying to calm her. My heartbeats drummed into my ears, adrenaline flowed through me.
Before I realized it, I ran into the street, blocking out the cries of people calling me back, but I was too determined to save the boy's life. I pumped my legs towards the boy, ripping one of my gloves off as I raced towards the boy. I dropped to my knees, skidding next to the scared boy. Shots of pain surged from my knees through my body as they grinded tormentingly against the rough pavement of the roads.
I grasped the boy's arm and crashing our bodies together as I shielded the boy, and pointed my hand towards the truck.
Energy tingled as it exploded from my bare hand, blueish white electric field sprouted from my hands and created a dome around the boy and I. The truck was almost on top of us, the boy shrieked in horror and grabbed onto my hoodie.
The world fell silent as the semi truck crashed ahead on with the force field, metal bending and flying apart with tails of sparks like deadly shooting stars as the truck hit. The driver of the truck opened the door and fall out, he scrambled away from the destroyed truck to the sidewalk, the trailer of the truck swerved to the other side of the street. Collided with cars driving the opposite way, crushing the cars into another as drivers and passengers ran from the streets, some were bleeding while others had their mouths opened wide. They were screaming.
All of them were screaming. Because of me.
What have I done....
