Chapter 9: Searching For Answers
After Y/N had escaped from the Imperial palace, the guards found his "dead" body. Not only was Seryu in tears, she had finally found someone she cared for. Someone she thought had died long ago. She found him again, only for her to see him take his own life.
But she pondered about the message Y/N left her. In curiosity, she had gotten permission from Esdeath to take the rest of the day off. She was spending her time investigating. Her first lead, was her very own home.
Timeskip-Evening
It was the evening and the sun was beginning to set. Seryu now stood in front of her old home. She still had ownership of the manor, considering both her parents are dead.
She stood in front of the old home, taking in a deep breath as she walked forward. Going through the metal doors, it creaks. Her Teigu, Coro, followed behind. Seryu pauses as she peered to her left. A memory was returning to her.
Flashback, Eleven Years Ago
(A/N): You are about seventeen, or you are, and Seryu's age is around mid-twenties. So let's say she's around twenty-five or twenty-six.
A younger Y/N, age six, was running out of the house as he ran to the tree that was on their property. The young boy climbs up, standing on one of the tree branches as he hid.
Soon, a younger Seryu, age fourteen to fifteen, soon sprints out of the house.
Seryu: Y/N?~ Where are you?~
Seryu continues to walk around the property of their home while the young golden-eyed boy let out a sigh of relief as he still remained on the tree branch.
Seryu: Found you!
Y/N: Aaah!
The young boy falls out of the tree, but Y/N was caught by his older sister, who had swiftly descended the tree as well.
The two look at each other before they burst out laughing.
Flashback End
Seryu stood in front of the very same tree, her metal arms touching it. Despite not being able to feel anything off them, she could still feel the nostalgic memory. She smiled at the fondness before she felt something nudge her leg.
Looking down, Coro was nudging her leg, making cute noises. She puts on a sad smile as she picked up the dog, hugging it into her chest.
Seryu: (whisper) I wish you met him. He would've loved you.
Wiping away her tears, she places the dog back down and pulls the note that Y/N had left. She read it one more time. "If you want to know the truth, head back to where it all started."
Seryu: (thoughts) What did he mean the truth?
She goes up the stone steps and opened the door. Peering inside, she saw that the interior still looked nice as always. A little bit of dust had accumulated here and there, but it was still well maintained.
Pictures of her cousin, Najenda, her younger brother, herself, and her parents hung on the walls.
She brushed her hand across the railing as she went up the steps. The first room in the hall on the right was her own. She stepped inside and found many achievements from her school, her officer's academy rewards, drawings she received from Y/N. Many fond memories lived in this house.
Flashback, Ten Years Ago
A teenage Seryu in her younger years currently sat on her desk, writing. Studying as she was a noble, she wanted to make her parents proud.
Her door creaks open to reveal a five-year old Y/N.
Y/N: Nee-san...can we play...?
Seryu: Later. I still have some studying to do. Okay?
Y/N: (saddened) Okay...
Seryu: Tell you what, after I'm done, how about we head for some ice cream. Sound good?
Y/N: (brightens up) Really!?
Seryu: (smiles) Yes, really.
Y/N: Thank you! (hugs Seryu) You're the best big sister ever!
Seryu: (giggles) I'm you're only sister.
Y/N: That's why you're the best!
Seryu: (sighs happily) Oh, you.
Flashback End
Seryu: Best big sister ever, huh? How was I the best when I couldn't even protect you.
Sighing to herself, she places the drawings she was holding back in the drawer she found them in. Leaving the room, she proceeded to the next one, which was her younger brother's.
Going inside, it was still left unchanged. Y/N's bed neatly folded, toys lying about the room. Seeing as there was nothing left for her to search in here, she went to the next room, which was her father's study. It was still the same as when her parent's had been murdered in this room. While the bodies and blood were cleaned up, everything else wasn't. Broken glass, the knife that laid on the floor, which was used to kill her parents, and other items that made a mess.
Going near the nightstand, she begins to search. Nothing.
She searched all the other drawers in the room. Nothing in any of them. Seryu was already getting frustrated from looking as she wanted the answers she was looking for.
It wasn't until she kicked the wall nearest to her, a false panel had opened. Confused as to why it was there, she went towards it. Inside the small compartment was a key. Upon picking it up, it looked familiar to her. She then started to clutch her head in pain.
Flashback
Seryu was currently thirteen-years old. She was currently trying to escape the grasp of an older woman who had silver-grey hair and had golden, yellow eyes. This was Karliah, Y/N and Seryu's mother.
Seryu: (panicking) Mother! Please, stop!
Karliah: Then stop struggling you brat! Not unless you want me to do this to your brother instead.
Seryu: No! Please...anyone but him. Please...
Karliah: Then be quiet and follow me.
Obeying her mother's command out of fear and for her brother's safety, she follows behind. Karliah led Seryu down the steps and into another hall.
In front of them was a cellar. The older lady quickly turned around and knocked Seryu out. The last thing Seryu heard and saw was her mother crouching down, the sound of key unlocking something and the moving of chains.
Flashback End
Knowing where to go, she backtracks her footsteps from the memory she had saw. Going down the same hall, she finds the same cellar.
Crouching down, she unlocked it and started to move the chains off it.
Lifting the cellar door, she opens it to reveal a staircase. It was dark below and Y/N looked to her left, seeing a lantern hanging on the wall. Lighting it, she descends down the steps, Coro still following behind.
She wondered how she didn't remember this. She remembered most things when living in this house, all but this one.
She arrived at the end of the staircase and she gazes all around. She was in a laboratory of sorts. Many tools were lying about, things of what looked liked experimentation on animals, some were even humans. It wasn't until Seryu came across a bookshelf. The first three rows were filled with books on anatomy and books published by other scientists on their research. The fourth and last row were journals that her mother's name on them. Her research.
Curious, Seryu picked one up. It detailed how she was supplied with prisoners from rebellions or people they just randomly picked off the street. Seryu was shocked. Her role models, especially her father, knew about this and was participating in this as well. She now started to question her sense of justice.
She then came across another book. This time, it was her dossier.
Subject #789
Name: Seryu Ubiquitous
My own daughter, or rather I should even call her that. My husband takes care of her, but honestly, she's nothing but a waste of space. She has a strong sense of justice, most likely from her father, one of the many things that I fell in love with him. But, she did not inherit my ingenuity and cunning smarts, unlike her younger brother.
Test 1
The beatings I've given her have severely buffed up her muscles. It seems to be working quite well. While this test is just a small one, it's crucial for what I'm trying to make considering it's working better on this one rather than the previous subjects that I've attempted this on.
Test 2
Now comes to endurance training. While I didn't place Seryu in the assassination program, I did have her develop her own resistance to most poisons. As for her endurance and stamina, I have her run, nonstop around the block and it's working wonders. It's good thing I wipe her memories of these moments. I can't have her remembering this and running off with her brother.
Test 3
The last test. Messing with her mind, we need to have a completely obedient soldier. The perfect soldier. With the help of Dr. Stylish, I was able to mess with her mind. I was able to alter her mind to have a twist and morbid personality that thrived on killing all her enemies by any means necessary. The only thing I'm having trouble is getting rid of that sweet personality of hers that's aimed to her younger brother. Then again, that would cause suspicion towards her younger brother and her cousin, so I think it's best to leave it as it is now. The project is almost complete.
Seryu closes the book and the only thing that was happening was tears were running down her face. She was used as a pawn, nothing more. Her father did look out for her, but she found out that he's been corrupt. It didn't help the fact that their mother didn't care for her at all, only caring about the fact that she's a precious test subject.
She looked to the next book and it was a dossier on her younger brother. She wondered if their mother did tests on him.
Subject #790
Name: Y/N Ubiquitous
Now, my son. Unlike his older sister, he inherited more of my features, along with my smarts and cunning tactical ability. His mind's capability is comparable to when I was a young girl. I shall groom him into the perfect tactician and have him join the Imperial Army to be a successful general. His sister can be one of his pawns. But I should be watching over him carefully. He seems to be gaining suspicion about me and I fear he may find the lab, which I must prevent him from doing so at all.
Update:
Y/N has been more responsive to me lately about my commands. That's odd. He's always been the rebellious and that's what's his father loves about him. But, I do know he's getting near the lab. If it gets problematic, I may have to kill him. I just hope it doesn't come to that. He's my son after all.
Having read enough, Seryu closes the book and places it back. She then went back to her father's study and went to his desk.
She remembered something vividly and kicks the desk. A hidden compartment then comes out and she finds a strange medallion. One that has a strange symbol. Next to it, was a bloody note. Seryu noticed that it was her mother's handwriting, but it was hastily written in.
To whoever finds this, my research must be burned, destroyed. It cannot fall into the Assassin's hands. If they find this, they may be able to create the perfect soldiers using our own men.
I may have been an Assassin once in my life, but I have since defeated to the Templars, serving faithfully. Dear brothers, find my son. As I'm writing this, he may be headed towards the Assassin Brotherhood's hideout. My husband is already dead beside me as we were stabbed by my own son. I knew I should've killed him, but he could be the perfect tactician. He still can be on your side. Do whatever you need to do to capture him. Kill the whole entire Capital if you need to...
That was the last bit of information that was on the note. Stuffing the medallion in her breast pocket, Seryu gains an angered look. She went to the storage closet and got cans of oil. She then made her way back to the cellar and spread it all around, taking out a match light after she finished leading the rest of the oil up the stairs.
Before she left, she grabbed the drawings that her younger brother had given her over the years. They were too precious to let go.
With the same emotionless look on her face, she flicked the match onto the oil trail and turned around, slowly walking away. There was nothing left for her here. She had a clear answer of what to look for next. Find the Assassin Brotherhood.
Timeskip-With Y/N
Y/N and the others were riding on a Air Manta, the time of day being night. The silver-grey haired Assassin was currently looking out in the distance.
It wasn't until he felt his hand being grabbed, looking to see Akame looking at him with a worried gaze. Y/N smiled for the first time in a long while before he patted her head, causing a blush to appear on her face. Y/N then extends his hand out and a messenger eagle flies onto his arm. Taking the message it had on it's leg, he reads it.
"She's found the truth"
