Chapter IV: Normal

"Oh shit!" Yang whispered.

"What was that?" Tai asked from the doorway.

"Um, nothing dad." Yang said, the two of you hiding behind the back of the couch.

"Okay, I'm setting some groceries by the door. Could you take them to the kitchen for me? There's a few more things I have to grab from the truck."

"Mmhmm." Yang squeaked.

"Thanks, hun."

Yang poked her head out from over the couch back to make sure Tai was gone.

"Quick, get your clothes." Yang hissed as the two of you scrambled to get dressed.

You could see Tai coming back from the truck. Thankfully a stack of boxes in his arms obscured his vision as you fastened your robes around your waist.

"Hurry up!" Yang panicked as she pulled her shirt on over her head.

Unfortunately for you, you had a considerable amount more than a shirt and pants. Tai was almost to the door and you still had to refasten your bracers. Your head turned as you heard Tai stumble, nearly tripping over the bags he had set down earlier.

"Yang, I thought I told you to take these to the kitchen." He said irritably.

"Sorry dad." Yang called. "Quick, go hide!"

Grabbing what remained of your clothes, you ran into the kitchen.

"Moving a little slow today, are we?" You heard Tai say as you quickly tightened the leather straps of your bracers. "Hurry up Yang, these boxes are heavy."

Tai was bound to see you sooner or later, so, thinking quickly, you announced your presence. Better to do so on your own terms, anything else and it would be obvious you were hiding something.

"Here," you said, grabbing one of the boxes from his arms, "let me help you."

"(F/N)?" Tai asked in surprise as the box blocking his vision was removed. "What are you doing here?"

"Having a long overdue reunion with your daughter." You replied.

"I see. Well, how are you doing?" He asked as you placed the boxes on the kitchen counter. "After what happened at Beacon we were starting to get worried."

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare anyone." You said sincerely. "The disciples of Sun Zhang recovered me and brought me back to the monastery to recover. I was out for a few weeks, but I'm better now."

"Well we're glad to hear it." Tai smiled, clapping you on the shoulder. "See Yang, I told you he'd be all right."

"Mmhmm." Yang nodded, face still somewhat pale.

"Well, I'm sure you two have plenty of catching up to do." Tai said, headed towards the stairs for his bedroom. "I'll leave you to it."

You watched Tai's retreating figure as he disappeared up the stairs, waiting until you heard the closing of his door before you finally released a heavy sigh of relief.

"Oh my God." Yang laughed quietly.

"Yeah." You agreed. "That was..."

"Close?" Yang offered.

"Too close."

Getting to the island of Patch had taken some time, and when you had first arrived some two hours ago, the sun had already been close to setting. Now, the windows were tinted a deep shade of magenta and small pinpricks of light began appearing in the soon to be night sky.

Taking your hand, Yang lead you upstairs and to her room. As you walked through the upstairs hallway, you could hear the feint sounds of the television coming from inside Tai's room as he watched the evening news. Yang opened the door to her room, and you followed her inside, closing the door behind you. You leaned against the wall, watching as Yang pulled her shirt over her head and tossed it on the back of a chair next to her desk. You hummed appreciatively as she shook her hips, pulling her pants down her long legs. Looking over her shoulder, she caught you staring at her ass.

"Like what you see?" She asked with a smirk.

She sauntered towards you, hips swaying with every step. You pushed yourself off the wall as Yang took your hands and guided them to her rear. You appreciated the softness of her well-shaped bottom, and she laughed lightly as you gave her ass a nice squeeze. Standing on her tip toes, she draped her arm around your shoulder and pulled you in for a kiss.

She pulled away, your lips chasing after hers until the last second. Turning her back on you, she walked over towards her dresser and began brushing her hair in the mirror. You watched her with a smile for several seconds before sitting on her bed. You looked around the room fondly. It had been a while since you'd last been here. Far too long. You were about to lay down when something on her nightstand caught your eye.

"Yang? What's this?" You asked.

"Hmm?" She asked not really paying attention.

Reaching forwards, you picked the prosthetic arm up from the nightstand, examining it in your hands.

"Oh, that." Yang said, watching you in the mirror. "It's nothing."

"It's an auto-prosthetic." You said, more to yourself than to her. "A very advanced auto-prosthetic. Yang, where'd you get this?"

"My dad said Ironwood had it specially made for me."

"Ironwood?" You asked in surprise. "As in General Ironwood?"

"Do you know any other Ironwoods?" She laughed.

You didn't really know what to say. You were shocked that someone as high up as the General of Remnant's largest military power had devoted the time and resources to have this specially made. It was... thoughtful of him.

"How's it been working for you? Is it comfortable?"

"Wouldn't know." Yang said, setting her hairbrush down. "Haven't tried it."

Her words surprised you. "You haven't?" You asked. "Why?"

"Why would I?" She asked, moving around to the other side of the bed.

"I don't know, I just thought... maybe it'd make things feel more normal." You suggested.

"You and my dad." Yang laughed somewhat bitterly. "You two are more alike than I realized."

"How so?" You asked, replacing the arm on her nightstand.

"Look, you've been gone for over a month (F/N)." She said in a way that made it evident she still hadn't completely forgiven your absence. "And things changed in that month. I've changed. This," she said, raising what remained of her right arm, "this is normal now."

"I don't think that's true." You said.

"What?"

"Look, I get it. T-The arm. It's new and strange and unfamiliar. Maybe that's why you haven't tried it yet."

"I already told you, I haven't tried it because I don't want it. This is the new normal for me."

"Or maybe you haven't tried it because you don't want to admit you need it."

Yang frowned; her brow furrowed. "I don't..."

"Look, I'm not trying to tell you how to feel. And I'm not saying you need this arm. But I know you Yang. And I know that you hate having to rely on anyone, or anything, other than yourself. And accepting the fact that you need a prosthetic, well, that just isn't you."

Yang remained silent, the frown still on her lips. Sighing, you wrapped your arms around her and held her close.

"I love you Yang." You said. "You know I do. And a prosthetic arm isn't going to change that fact. It won't make me think any less of you. And, well... if you choose to not use it, I'll support that to. But I just think you need to remember; normal is what you make of it."

Yang said nothing as you undressed, nor when the two of you laid down next to each other. She didn't wish you goodnight or return your kiss. But she didn't protest or pull away when you moved to spoon her, nor when you wrapped your arms around her and held her close. She wasn't mad, she was just thinking. Thinking about what you had said.

Normal is what you make of it.
