Chapter 4
Kendra's eyes opened and she jolted upright. Her bedside clock read 4:01 A.M. She longed to feel the weight of a pencil between her fingers, and her sketchbook balanced on her lap while she drew outside.
She got out of bed slowly, carefully making sure no one would wake up. God forbid that. The last time she'd woken up Seth he'd nearly set a wraith on her for "disturbing his beauty sleep" as he put it. Kendra grabbed her phone and a flashlight and snuck out of the attic, downstairs, creeping out of the house before sprinting toward the treehouse. Her love. Her life. It was amazing there. Drawing and reading meant the world to her.
She quickly scaled the ladder, went inside, grabbed one of the sketchbooks that was mostly blank, and climbed out. It was too dark there.
She ran back to the house, where she'd turned on the porch light. What should she draw? The answer was obvious. It was why she'd grabbed this specific sketchbook. They were drawn in based on their topics. This one, well, it was one that had hardly ever been used.
It was a sketchbook of real people. She'd only drawn four people. Seth, Warren, Bracken and Shiara. She never drew real life people unless they were really special to her, or they appeared in her dreams. Not nightmares, but actual dreams.
And now, there were two people. Two more pages to use. Alexander Goldstorm, and Emmanuelle Goldstorm. They were relative strangers, but Kendra felt as if she'd known them all her life, and could trust them. It was odd.
Kendra started some music, her phone randomly choosing her favorite musical Hamilton, and started to draw. Very light lines, until she was finished with the outline. Then she darkened them. She paid careful attention to the details, erasing and redrawing, and repeating the cycle. She smudged a little of the graphite here and there, turning her right pointer finger black. She focused on it so much that she lost track of time. The sky was beginning to turn light purple, white and orange to the east when she finished.
Now to start on Alexander. He just as mysterious as Emmanuelle. She didn't know which one was more shrouded in secrets. Emma seemed open and bubbly at first, but she had a wicked side to her. Neither of them spoke of their past. If you pried too deep, Emma would shut you out.
Alexander was different. He was hostile at first, then became more loose. But, like Emma, he would shoot you down if you went too far. Something made Kendra think that neither of them had ever let many people in their heart before.
It was 5:17. Like Emma, she started working on Alex's outline for his sketch. Only, he was wearing a sort of hoodie and she was drawing him from the side. 5:35.
Kendra started listening to something new, since her soundtrack of Hamilton had finished. She let her phone randomly choose from her current and old favorite songs. Dear Evan Hansen, the Musical.
"I have to say, even though I don't like musicals, Dear Evan Hansen was fairly good," A light, teasing voice said.
Kendra whipped her head up to see the twins standing on the porch, watching her. "What are you two doing up so early?" She asked curiously.
Alexander gave a lazy grin. "I could ask you the same thing, Kendra. Emma and I naturally wake up at 5:30. Back at our house, we used to train using weapons, spar a little, and build up our muscles. I suppose you got up early to draw."
Kendra sighed. "Guilty as charged. Do you guys want breakfast? I can cook something."
Emma shrugged. "If you don't feel like cooking, don't cook. Don't worry about us."
Kendra waved her hand. "It's no problem, and besides, I pretty much always make breakfast, as I usually get up early. What would you like?"
"Do you have any bacon and eggs? Or toast?" Alex inquired.
Kendra gave a small smile. "We have all that and more. Do you like pancakes or waffles more? Or is that too heavy?"
"Waffles and it's not too heavy," Alex and Emma chorused in unison.
"You guys must like waffles," Kendra said mildly.
"Yeah, we do. Our mom used to bake them all the time, and they were so good." Emma said wistfully.
Kendra stood up and stretched. "Well, then how can I compare?"
The trio headed inside, and Kendra set her sketchbook down. She got out the ingredients and began to prepare them.
Alexander nodded toward her sketchbook. "What were you drawing this morning?"
"This may seem weird but I was drawing you two. I finished your sketch Emma, but I just barely started yours Alex. Be honored. I practically never draw actual people. The only people I've drawn are Seth, Warren, Bracken, Shiara and, of course, you two. Normally I just draw random pictures of people online, or combine random traits to make someone."
"Who are Bracken and Shiara?" Alexander inquired.
"Shiara is a fairy friend of mine," Kendra said and then blushed, "And Bracken is, well, I don't know what he is. We're friends but we both want to be something more. He's a unicorn, though, and has to help supervise the reconstruction so he can't exactly be here all the time. It's really complicated."
"Oh," Alex said, having an emotion on his face that Kendra identified as sympathetic or disgruntled. Kendra decided on the first emotion.
Emma walked over to her drawing and saw herself. "Wow, you're really good. I'd never be able to do that. I draw, but not that seriously. I suck. Badly."
"Breakfast is ready! By the way Emma, I'm willing to bet you're not that bad," Kendra said cheerfully.
Emma groaned. "I am."
"I can give you lessons if you want. Or show you some of my drawings." Kendra offered.
"I'd like that."
"Can we start eating or are we going to talk about art until everyone else wakes up?" Alexander asked irritably.
Emma glared. "Just because you're worse than me at art, and I'm horrific, doesn't mean you have to take it out on everyone else."
"I'm not bad, I just find it boring. Same as how you find games and TV boring."
"Because they are boring!"
"Because you spend all of your time on your precious books."
Emma sighed. "I'm not going to argue with you there. I do love reading."
"Am I going to have to be the one to insert myself into your conversation and eat your food?" Kendra asked.
"Yep," the twins said in unison.
They all laughed and started to eat. The room was filled with light chatter.
"Say Emma, Alex," Kendra said once they were finished and cleaning up, "How did you two get your names?"
Emma thought for a moment. "My mother had an old friend that she met in her sixth grade. She was one of the last true friends she had. They never lost contact, not once. We now call her our honorary aunt."
Alexander looked thoughtful. "As for my name, it's a longer story. Our aunt Emma, not this Emma, danced. She was a beautiful dancer, still is, and works in that department. Her partner for a few years was our dad. They never liked each other romantically, but our mom, Theresa, met him once and they hit it off fairly fast. They dated each other, became engaged and eventually got married. Mum used to be best friends with Emma and another man, his name was Alex. He was the one who persuaded our aunt to let Theresa meet her dance partner. So we have both of them to thank for me being here."
Kendra's eyebrows rose. "Wow. Impressive. I was named because my parents met when they accidentally ran into each other in the library, and they shared the same book. Kendra was the name of the main character."
Emma laughed. "Looks like we're all named because of love. The things love does to people. It's a shame I've never been in love romantically. I wonder what it'd be like."
Alex looked horrified. "Please tell me you aren't going girly on me. I liked my sister when she was threatening to cut out people's organs and testicles when they annoyed her. Not my girly sister who fantasized about marrying someone."
Emma grinned and said, "We are the same people Alex. Deal with it."

Kendra, Alex and Emma were running laps when they were interrupted by her grandmother, who still looked slightly cross. The three of them had nearly given her grandma a heart attack when she'd gotten up at 6:30 in the morning and saw three figures in the kitchen, faintly illuminated by the sun.
"Kendra, Alexander, Emma, we have something important to tell you! It's very urgent! Meet us in the study in five minutes. I have to notify the others." Grandma Sorenson called. She walked away, presumably to find Dale, Vanessa and the others.
Alex arched his eyebrows. "Any idea what's going on?"
"Nope." Kendra popped the p. "Probably something to do with a mission. That's usually what we're called in for. Though, if it's a mission, not all of us would have to be there. Yeah, I have no idea."
Emma checked her watch. "Let's just go there. And don't forget to show me your artwork eventually."
Kendra laughed. "Of course I won't forget."
With that, they trooped inside to Grandpa Sorenson's study and saw Seth, Dale, Vanessa, Tanu, and her Grandparents.
After making themselves comfortable, Kendra asked, "Where's Warren?"
Her grandparents shared a grave look. "That's what we called you all in here for." Grandpa Sorenson said.
Kendra shook her head. "He's not dead, please not let him be dead," she muttered.
Her grandmother gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "He's not dead, but, well, he's been turned to stone. We found him in his cabin when he didn't show up for breakfast."
The picture for Emma is
and Alexander's half finished picture is below
Can you see them? Because I can't. None of these pictures I put up belong to me. I just search up them on Google. I know, right? SO creative. I could try to draw Emma, but I suck at drawing so yeah.
