Incident
Note : I'm going to call the colour changing scales on the underside of Firefly's wings stars from now on.
The night was quiet, only interrupted by the croaking of frogs and the chirping of nocturnal sloths.
Glory, Deathbringer, and Jambu were walking back to the Rainwing village ever so slowly. Firefly was on Deathbringer's back and clinging to his neck, occasionally giggling whenever he turned his head to smile at her. After a while, it stopped.
"I think she's finally asleep," Deathbringer broke the silence.
The two other dragons looked back to see Firefly softly snoring with a small smile on her face. Her ruff and stars had turned into a calming sky blue colour. The sight of her daughter resting on her husband's back made Glory's scales turn uncontrollably rose pink and her face broke into a smile.
"Aaaaaaaaawwwwww....." Jambu managed to wheeze out.
"Is this what it feels like to have silver napping on your back ?" Deathbringer asked with a rather dopey grin on his face as he gazed at his snoozing dragonet.
"Makes you feel like a mother, doesn't it?" Glory said, brushing the tip of her wing with his. Glory still disliked being touched by practically anyone, but it was fine if she was the one who triggered it, especially if it was with her Deathbringer.
"I don't know about mother but I'm definitely a father." He added a wink after that last word.
"Umm... Glory ?" Jambu suddenly called. "Isn't that your hut ? The one that's on fire ?"
"WHAT !?" Glory and Deathbringer yelled at the same time.
They snapped their heads to the direction ahead and saw that royal treehouse was, indeed, on fire. The flames had already grown incredibly large and were spreading rapidly to the trees.
There were already a few dragons there, Rainwings that lived nearby and a few Nightwings that happened to have past by on their nightly rendezvous. They were bringing cauldrons of water from the river to pour onto the fire in attempt to extinguish it.
"Here !" Deathbringer said. He handed Firefly to Glory and shot up to the sky to join the other dragons. "Alright ! The two of you. Get more cauldrons and dragons to help !" He ordered. "Put all the cauldrons over there. You five go get as much water as possible, give them to a dragon, then take a new cauldron. The rest of you try to put down the fire with the water handed to you. And don't let the fire spread further into the rainforest. GO !"
And with that, all the dragons went to do their tasks in a frantic. Deathbringer flew down and hovered in front of Glory who was now all sorts of different shades of green.
"Glory, I need you to stay away from here and protect our dragonet, okay ?"
For once, Glory didn't complain. She always insisted she could do things on her own and that she didn't need to be protected, but this time she didn't. She knew she had to ensure Firefly's safety so she just nodded.
Deathbringer nodded back then turned his attention to the dragon on Glory's right. "Jambu, come and help !"
An hour later, the fire was gone. All that was left were burnt trees, one that used to hold up the queen's home.
Everyone had already went home to try to catch a few more hours of sleep, leaving only Glory, Deathbringer, and Firefly behind.
Glory flew to her sleeping platform, the one she used for sun time and was far enough so that they won't smell the leftover smoke and ashes. She touched down quietly, afraid of awaking the dragonet in her arms. Soon enough, Deathbringer was there too right in front of her.
"You should rest," She said.
"We both should," He replied simply.
They didn't exactly had much energy left, so they decided to just lay down. They positioned themselves on their sides, Glory in the middle, clutching Firefly tight and Deathbringer to her right, facing her back.
A moment passed and they fell into a deep slumber under the stars, choosing to claim the previous event as an incident and focus on keeping their family a nice and happy one instead.
