First Day (part 2)
Sixth cave to the right, sixth cave to the right. Firefly walked the halls alone, counting up the caves she had passed by. Lychee's cave was the second from the hall entrance and had already went in to start unpacking. Turns out, the two cousins would only be able to meet up during free time since they weren't in the same sleeping cave, winglet, or even classes. Not even the first week and I've broken one of Dad's rules already.
She paused at the opening of a cave she assumed was her's. On the left side of the giant gap in the wall was a scroll with three names written in flawless cursive : Firefly & Nemertea.
Firefly made sure her ruff and stars were a cobalt blue with gold dappled here and there before sweeping into the cave. She froze after taking two steps in to marvel at the rectangular room. On the side of the cave parallel to the entrance were 3 leaf windows, one lime green, jade green, and olive green. Bellow the middle window was a white colorful hammock hung between two stalactites that sprouted from the stone floor and carved to look like the lower parts of a tree. Meanwhile, the wall of the doorway had a similar reed mat on top of a flat rock platform to its right. It wasn't leaning on the wall as a small river separated them, just big enough to dip a tail into. On the far wall were two wooden scroll racks on each sides with moon globes on top of them, giving off a dim glow and a long table between them. And finally, the last wall, the wall closest to the entryway, had a mural of dragons from all the different tribes laughing together, white, pink, orange, black, yellow, brown, and blue side by side.
"A little bit tacky, isn't it ?" a confident voice said from behind Firefly. She turned around and was greeted by a proud-looking azure blue Seawing. "Hi ! I'm Nemertea. Princess Nemertea, actually."
"Hello.." Firefly started, trying to hold back from rolling her eyes. She really is like Tsunami from mom's stories. And she's my classmate ?! "My name is Firefly, Princess Firefly of the Rainwings and Nightwings."
They stared at each other for moment, emerald green eyes versus midnight blue ones.
"Like mothers, like daughters," sighed a orangy-brown Mudwing who popped into the cave. She had almost golden underscales and long dark maroon horns that twist inwards near the end. Her snout and body were also more slender than a regular Mudwing's.
The previously death-glaring princesses turned their attention to their other newcomer. "I'm Mire, by the way. I think we're in the same Winglet."
"..I'm Firefly.. "
"And I'm Nemertea.. "
"I know. Your Glory's dragonet and your Tsunami's," Mire remarked. "Well guess what ? I'm Clay' and Peril's."
The three of them just stood there in awkward silence before Nemertea let out a long exasperated groan.
"Great !!" the Seawing exclaimed. "I bet our parents put us all in the same winglet on purpose !"
"Maybe they thought we could fix your attitude like they tried to with your mother's," Firefly stated, turning her ruff into a gradient from black to indigo to yellow.
"Why.. You little..."
"It was a JOKE ! Three moons, do you have a sense of humour ?"
"OKAY !!" Mire interrupted. "How about we just... go to the library ?"
Firefly shrugged. "Why not ? " The two calm dragonets looked expectantly at Nemertea.
"Fine.." she agreed.
They retreated from their sleeping cave and made their way to the library, the Seawing princess in the lead. Firefly turned her ruff and stars a calm blue before entering peaceful cave. They were greeted by a slim Nightwing with a white blindfold used to cover his eyes.
"I'm back, uncle Starflight," Mire nearly shouted, causing the other dragons in the room to hiss. "I have some new friends with me too. Meet Firefly and Nemertea !"
Uncle ? They must be close. I guess Starflight and Clay do live in Jade Mountain together. And it's not like they have any royal duties like the other Dragonets of Destiny.
Starflight turned his head to the direction of the Mire's voice and smiled. "Hello, girls. Come get your library cards here." He took out a small chest and opened it, revealing some wooden pieces arranged in neat stacks. Both of the princesses shuffled the insides before finding the wood piece with their names carved into it.
"Thanks ! We don't have anything like these in the rainforest library," Firefly told the librarian.
"Well that's because we just invented them a few years ago, they're not very popular yet."
"That's cool." He is smart, just like mom said. Didn't she also say he had a dragonet ?
As if on cue, a petite midnight-black dragonet with silver underscales flew into the cave and landed on Starflight's table. The silver scales on the the underside of her wings spray outwards like his and she had more dotting her tail and on the corners of her dark green eyes. She also had a black fur pouch on her left ankle.
The little Nightwing crouched to take a scroll from underneath the table before lifting her head back up to kiss the Starflight's cheek.
"Thank you, father !" the little dragonet hurriedly said before starting out of the cave.
"Don't fly too fast in the tunnels !" Starflight scolded, but a loving smile was apparent on his snout.
"You have a daughter ?" Nemertea blurted out. Both Firefly and Mire whacked one of the Seawing's wings with their's violently.
"Yes, actually. Hasn't Tsunami told you ?"
Nemertea looked rather uncomfortable, as if she didn't want to tell him the honest truth.
"Umm.. Do you have anything we can keep these cards in ?" Firefly changed the subject.
"Of course," the librarian replied, reaching out under his desk to grab a black fur pouch and a white one and placed them on the table. Firefly took the black pouch and tied it around her left ankle like the Nightwing dragonet had. Nemertea did the same.
"We're going to go read now," Mire beckoned the two other dragonets.
"Let me know if you need anything."
They decided to sit around a low square table near Starflight's as Mire picked out a random scroll from the racks. They spread it out on the table and Firefly read the tittle out loud.
"Phrryia's Greatest Wars."
"This," Mire jabbed a claw to the paper, "is what happens when dragons argue too much."
"What is that supposed to mean ?" Nemertea threaten from beside Firefly.
"It means think before you snap," she deadpanned. "And don't worry, Mire ! We're not going be that immature."
"I don't find this reassuring."
Firefly rolled her eyes before putting one talon on her chest and the other in the air. "I, Firefly of the Rainwings and Nightwings, solemnly swear to never proclaim war against Nemertea of the Seawings." She raised an eye ridge at Mire to ask 'is that good enough ?'
The two other other dragonets just stared at her from a while. Eventually, they all broke into laughter, forming a new long-lasting friendship. That, and more hissing from the neighboring dragons.
Note : I really have to make these chapters longer.
If you haven't realised yet, a few of the scenes in here are from Moon's vision from book 6.
