Finally, after an hour and a half of travel, you made it to your destination. The bus ride was fine, only taking up twenty minutes of your trip, and the walk to the barrier was only ten minutes, but the walk through the Underground took much longer than you expected. You hadn't realized that Snowdin was actually the fifth area in Underground from the barrier. Mettaton had instructed you to take the small ferry to Snowdin, but of course you had gotten lost. It didn't help that the first ferry stop was all the way through Hotland. The castle itself was large and grey, and after that you nearly got lost in the core. Those two areas took at least twenty minutes to clear. Then there was Hotland's itself. It was blistering hot in there (living up to its name) and you had to take off practically all of the layers you put on. That's where you got lost. First you messed up the elevator, accidentally getting out on the wrong floor twice, before you got stuck in a bunch of spider webs. It took twenty minutes for the spider monster, Muffet, to realize someone had gotten themselves stuck. She let you out (without any trouble luckily) and urged you buy some spider baked goods. You realized that she probably wouldn't let you leave until you did, so you bought a few spider doughnuts. From there you attempted to get to the ferry again, got lost for another fifteen minutes, and ended up at a huge laboratory. It was locked, and you were off again. Finally you found the ferry, and the boat man gladly agreed to take you to Snowdin.
As you travelled quickly downstream he warned you rather ominously, "Tra la la. Beware of the man who speaks in hands." The warning made no sense though so you disregarded it for now.
Luckily the trip on the boat was fast and not five minutes later you were disembarking in Snowdin. You were immediately freezing, having not replaced your clothes yet, and immediately regretted not realizing that a town named Snowdin would literally be snowed in. You thanked the ferryman, who you learned was named River Person, and quickly went about bundling up, realizing it probably would have been smart to bring another jacket. With chattering teeth you scamper through the snow, passing a wolf throwing ice cubes into the river before taking a left. Why would they need to throw ice into the river? You thought as you walked.
After a few minutes you found yourself standing before your destination. You double checked the address, then looked over the cozy looking house. Lights were strung around the roof, and already you could hear a steady beat of music and peals of laughter. Beside the house there were two mailboxes- one stuffed completely full and the other looking untouched. With a deep breath filling your lungs you strode up to the door and knocked three times.
There was more laughter and after a moment you realized no one heard you. You knocked again, this time louder. From within you heard someone yell, "I think someone's at the door!"
"Oooooo, that must be our special guest!" You heard Mettaton coo from within.
"IS THAT WHO YOU WERE ON THE PHONE WITH?" Someone else said quite loudly.
"Maybe~" Mettaton then threw open the front door and grinned widely upon seeing you. "Darling, you made it!" Without another word you were enveloped in a spine cracking hug. Mettaton let go a second later and held you at arm's length. "And it took you long enough!"
"Sorry Met. I ended up getting a little lost."
"Well at least you're here now!"
"METTATON WHO IS AT THE DOOR?" The person who was yelling before inquired. Maybe they just always spoke that loudly? Mettaton pulled you into the house with little warning and suddenly you were face to face with six other monsters. The closest one to you you knew as Papyrus; a skeleton monster with an orange/red scarf around his neck and odd looking armour. You nearly had to crane your neck back all the way to look at him- he was at least seven feet tall!
Casting a glance around the living room you also saw a smaller skeleton lounging on the couch with a video game controller in hand, and dressed in a blue hoodie with fur trim, white shirt and black shorts. A blue fish woman sitting in front of the couch, dressed in a black tank top and jeans, with a yellow dinosaur like lady beside her. She wore a cute looking dress with a floral pattern and oval glasses perched on her nose. The fish woman also had an eye patch and was holding a second controller. It looked like you had interrupted some one on one first person shooter action. There was another recliner set up beside the couch and sitting there was a white furred goat woman, clad in a white and purple robe, with a smallish child squished in beside her.
Quickly recovering for the initial shock of seeing so many new monsters in such close quarters you smiled and gave them a slight wave. You would have said something, be before you had the chance Papyrus was yelling, "OH MY GOSH! IS THAT WHO I THINK IT IS?!"
"Mm," Mettaton purred, arm wrapping around your shoulder. "Well who do you think it is honey?"
"clearly," the shorter skeleton piped up casually. His voice was surprisingly deep. He seemed to have a permanent grin affixed to his face, and unlike Papyrus- who seemed to have no eyes- he had two small white dots in his eye sockets. Currently they were affixed on you. "that's Mettaton."
"OH, OF COURSE IT IS." Papyrus answered like it was obvious and like I didn't exsist. The other skeleton's grin widened.
"but who's that beside Mettaton?"
Papyrus' eyes focused back on you. "OH MY GOSH! ISN'T THAT...?"
You couldn't help but smile at their odd antics. You extended your hand to Papyrus and introduced yourself finally. "(y/n) Heir. It's a pleasure to meet you!"
Papyrus squealed like a fan-girl before grabbing your hand into glove covered ones. He shook your hand so enthusiastically your arm nearly popped out of its socket. Mettaton had warned you once or twice that Papyrus fancied himself one of your biggest fans.
"I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M MEETING (y/n) IN PERSON!" You giggled a little. He was overdramatic sure, but he just seemed so genuine! "I MUST INTRODUCE YOU TO EVERYONE IMMEDIATELY!" Suddenly you found yourself swept away from Mettaton and into a shoulder hug by Papyrus. "EVERYONE, THIS IS (y/n)!" You were pretty sure they knew that already, but didn't want to interrupt him. "(y/n) THIS IS EVERYONE!"
"Introduce us better than that, bone head!"The fish lady yelled back, shaking a closed fist at Papyrus.
"OH RIGHT! THAT IS UNDYNE!" Papyrus corrected himself while you waved to her. "BESIDE HER IS ALPHYS, AND IN THE CHAIR IS TORIEL AND FRISK!" You smiled and waved to each person respectively, taking care to quickly memorize their names (which you weren't always the best at remembering). Undyne gave you a sharp salute, Alphys gave you a slight wave (while blushing in an embarrassed manner), Toriel smiled and nodded politely, and Frisk jumped up from the chair and shook your hand that wasn't trapped between you and Papyrus. "AND ON THE COUCH IS MY BROTHER SANS!"
"yo." He said in way of greeting, eyeing you a little.
"It's very nice to meet you all." You say, a few of them smile.
Papyrus turned back to you. "MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME (y/n)! IF YOU ARE HUNGRY THERE IS LEFTOVER SPAGHETTI IN THE FRIDGE!"
"Thanks, it's really great to be here." You smiled at him, removing your scarf, hat and purse and piling them up with your boots by the door. Once your hat was off you shook out your long, braided hair.
"AH! I SHOULD GET MY CAMERA SO WE CAN COMMEMORATE THIS JOYOUS EVENT!" Papyrus said rather suddenly, darting through the living room and up the stairs. A second later he yelled down, "METTATON WHERE DID YOU PUT MY CAMERA?"
Mettaton sighed and gave you a smile before flouncing off up the stairs to help him find it. Once he was gone you didn't exactly know where to go or what to do. A sense of awkward nervousness descended upon you and you played with the hem of your sweater, staying put by the door. Though you were a performer, small groups of unknown people still made you extremely uncomfortable. Sans, who seemed to be the one who paused the game, suddenly unpaused it and began playing it again. Whether he picked up on your mood or just got bored you didn't know, but as a result Undyne yelled out a string of swears (cautiously censored for Frisk). It sounded like she was naming off a series of deserts. Everyone laughed, and so did you, and the attention went back to the game. The awkward tension in the room suddenly dissipated and the everyone seemed to relax.
Frisk reached up and grabbed the hem of your shirt tugging on it gently. She grinned up at you and pulled you towards the couch. After gently stepping over people's outstretched feet, Frisk shoved Sans slipper clad ones off the couch (as he was easily taking up 2/3rds of it) and proceeded to pull you down onto it.
"hey!" He mumbled in protest, but quickly went back to the game. Frisk stuck her tongue out as a response and sat right beside you. You ended up sandwiched between the two of them.
Frisk started rapidly signing to you and you looked at her in confusion. You didn't understand sign language, and wondered if the kid was a mute. Toriel laughed softly, quickly coming to your rescue. "Frisk is saying she's a huge fan of yours, and that it is super exciting to meet you."
"Oh, really?" You smiled slightly. You then looked down at the kid. She looked to be about nine or ten, with plain blue shorts and a striped purple and magenta shirt. "Well it's super exciting to meet you too, Frisk."
Frisk grinned, and suddenly Undyne was yelling in frustration, startling you. "Damnit! I want a rematch!" You glanced at the screen and saw that Sans had just killed off Undyne's character. He performed a small fist bump of victory with Frisk.
"sorry Undyne, no rematches." He said as she groaned.
"I-It's okay, you'll get him n-next time!" Alphys encouraged her. Sans then proceeded to toss the remote control to you.
"your turn."
"Um...? What am I...?"
His smile stretched slightly. "when we play, whoever wins passes their remote to the next person."
Frisk poked you to get your attention, then started signing to Toriel for translation. "Which means that you are next, my child."
"Oh," You blinked. "But I don't know how to play?"
"Hahaha! Easy victory!" Undyne cried, hitting rematch not a second later. "And don't think you're going to get any special treatment because you're famous!"
"I don't expect any special treatment. I'd actually prefer you to treat me like you treat everyone else." You say, suddenly on the defensive. You hated when people assumed you wanted to be treated special because you were 'famous'.
"Then I won't go easy on you! Not that I would have anyway." Undyne laughed manically as she hit the play button, Sans laughing right along with her. Unprepared, you squeaked and flipped the controller around in your hands, quickly mashing buttons to find out what they did. You weren't exactly a noob when it came to video games, but first person shooters weren't exactly your forte. It also didn't help that you'd never seen this game before. Quickly you figured out that your character was on the left half of the screen, and you made them run for cover as Undyne's quickly closed in. You managed to find the button for shoot and duck, and started playing as seriously and enthusiastically as you could. Undyne was good, but somehow those years of playing Halo and Call of Duty with your brother payed off. Mostly it was just you button mashing, but somehow you managed to get behind her character and killed it in one hit. The match was over in less than three minutes.
"WHAT!?!" She yelled, jumping to her feet. "Impossible! How did you defeat me!"
"Uh," You smiled and shrugged. "Beginners luck?"
"i guess you could say you really jumped the trigger on that victory Undyne." Sans snickered, eliciting a fit of giggles from both Frisk and yourself. You quickly tried to cover up you laughter as Sans shot you a huge smile. "what? did you find that humerus?"
"OH DON'T START THAT AGAIN SANS!" Papyrus yelled, finally coming back downstairs. In one hand was an old film camera, and the other was placed on his hip defiantly. Sans snickered again and put his hands up in surrender.
"i'm sorry that didn't tickle your funny bone."
"GAH!"
You couldn't help it, you giggled again. Bad puns just got to you. After a second both Toriel and Frisk were laughing along with you. Papyrus fumed for a second before plopping himself down on the couch beside Frisk. That ended up shoving Frisk into you, and you into Sans. The couch wasn't built for four people, but before you could mutter an apology Papyrus held out the camera at arm's length. Instinctively you leaned closer to Frisk and smiled brightly, holding up a peace sign. Before Papyrus could even utter a simple cheese Sans snickered and said, "hey Pap, isn't taking a picture a bit, cheesy?"
The flash went off, and you burst into laughter. "OH MY GOSH! I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU!"
"sorry sorry, stopping should be a snap."
Papyrus screamed in frustration and everyone else burst into laughter. This seemed to be a common occurrence in the house. Sans grinned at you and as the laughter puttered off you handed the control to Frisk. She quickly signed something to Undyne before hitting play.
The gaming party really started to pick up after that. You relaxed into the situation, feeling welcomed and happy. As the fighting on screen continued, Papyrus and Alphys started cheering on Frisk and Undyne respectively, making almost everyone laugh. Sans cracked a pun or two here and there, making Papyrus grown and try to cover up the jokes with yelling. Even you and Mettaton started making comments and crying out when the person you were rooting for died. By the third or fourth round with you in it, no one was tiptoeing around you or treating you any different then the next person. They seemed to realize that you weren't one of those stuck up stars. So, eventually, the controllers circled the room, ending up in yours and Sans' hands.
"go easy on me, k?" He said, smiling widely as he cracked his boney fingers.
You grinned back, nodded and quickly pressed play, stealing yourself for the challenge. Through watching the precious battles, you knew that Sans was one of the toughest in the room. And you were right Immediately Sans managed to track down your character- faster than even Undyne had the first time. After that it was a battle for your life. You resorted to weaving back and forth unpredictably as fast as you could, yet still Sans was landing hits. You watched as your health bar started slowly depleting. He managed to spot new weapons and ammo with ease (as both weapons and bombs were lying around here and there for use), sending an almost constant barrage of shots your way.
Undyne was on her feet after the first five minutes, aggressively yelling and urging Sans to "wipe the floor with you". Apparently she hadn't gotten over you beating her the first time. Papyrus, seemingly egged on by her yelling, also got up and started cheering you on, yelling out suggestions and pointing aggravatedly at the screen. Frisk was giggling and bouncing up and down, rapidly signing out something Toriel didn't bother to really translate.
Somehow you managed to survive for another few minutes, and by an extreme stroke of luck got out of Sans sights. At the same time you managed to snag a grenade off the ground. You pushed your character into position and threw the grenade. Sans caught the action and moved to the side, dodging the explosive. Now while this did reveal where you were (as your character had to stand up) it also lined up Sans' character into the line of your firearm. Sans' character swung around taking aim as well.
"better luck next time!" he grinned.
"I could say the same to you!" You grinned, hitting the trigger button a second before he did. Both your characters died, but his character was hit first, naming you the winner. Undyne fell dramatically to her knees with a cry, and Papyrus jumped up with a cheer. Frisk cheered as well, tackling you in a huge bear hug. That knocked you into Sans, but he just ran a hand over his skull and laughed. Somehow you ended up half sprawled across his lap.
"well that ended with a bang." He said dramatically, causing everyone to join in the laughter. Even Papyrus laughed at that one.
"Foul! Foullllll!" Undyne cried.
"if she was a fowl i'm sure she'd be easier to hit!" He added throwing his arms out to the side. You laughed even harder, actually snorting in the process. Everything fell silent, and you smacked a hand over your mouth. Then everyone burst out laughing again.
When everyone finally settled down Sans ruffled Frisk's hair and gave your forehead a gentle flick. You got off him and Toriel stood. "Well, I think it's about time for some butterscotch-cinnamon pie. Who wants a slice?"
Everyone stuck their hands in the air and Toriel laughed lightly. You took the opportunity to stand. "I can help you bring out the slices, Toriel."
"Oh how generous. I would gladly accept the help, child."
You smiled and followed her into the kitchen. Everything was normal, except for the sink which was suspended at least eight feet in the air. Underneath it was a massive cupboard. Toriel went to the fridge and pulled out a covered pie. She then slipped it into the oven and set the timer for about five minutes. Already you could hear the group starting the game up again.
"So you're a singer correct?" Toriel asked after a moment.
"Yes, I am. " You answered with a smile.
"And how are you finding that?"
"It's amazing. I absolutely adore singing and interacting with all of my fans." It might have sounded like a generic answer, but I didn't care. It was the truth, at least for you.
Toriel nodded like that made sense. For once you didn't feel judged at all for your answer. "It must be a lot of work though."
"It is, but the reward is well worth it. I'm doing what I love so the amount of hours I have to put into it doesn't bother me."
"That's wonderful. Frisk really loves some of your songs. I think her favourite is 'Rising Up'. I have to agree with her, it's quite a good song."
Rising Up was actually the first of your songs to reach the top ten chart in the country. You flushed a little, a shy smile spreading on your lips. "Well I'm glad you think so. That's one of my favourite to perform as well."
Toriel nodded again with a smile as the timer pinged. She went over to the oven, slipping on some oven mitts and removing the pie. It was steaming hot now, and Toriel expertly divided the pie into even slices and slid them onto plates. "Mmmm, that smells delicious." You noted, the scent of butterscotch and cinnamon dancing in your nose.
"I'm glad you think so! I consider this pie to be a bit of a specialty for me."
As Toriel finished sliding the last piece of pie onto a plate and gathering the forks Frisk appeared at your side. "Are you going to help us with the pie?" You ask. She nodded rapidly a few times. Toriel handed her three slices, one balanced on the top of her head, you two and the forks, and took the last three herself. You all headed out, and handed out the pie slices to the expectant monsters. After a round of thanks you all dug in. You couldn't help but moan when the first bite hit your tongue. The pie was twice as good as it smelt. Toriel giggled, seeming happy with your reaction.
"good, huh?" Sans smiled in between bites. You wondered for a second how skeletons could taste and eat as they didn't have stomachs, but soon forgot when you took your next bite.
"This is amazing." You agreed. "It's probably the best pie I ever had."
Toriel let out a nervous laugh. "Oh, I don't know if it's that good."
"It is!" You insist, shoveling another forkful into your mouth. Frisk put her plate on her lap for a second so she could sign something out rapidly. Toriel laughed at whatever she said.
"Well I suppose I'll just have to trust your judgement."
With the pies finished off happily, everyone then started debating what to do next. You sat back and let the commotion surround you. You felt strangely content. It was like watching a happy family at a park. Though they were arguing right now, there seemed to be a kind of peace throughout them. Like they cogs in a clock- each one their own device, but unable to run smoothly without the rest. It was kind of fun to watch. Papyrus, Undyne, Frisk and Mettaton seemed to be the most expressive out of all of them, gesturing wildly and sometimes yelling. Toriel calmly added her input, making sure to lay down the law when things got too roudy. Alphys nervously added input sometimes, and though she often got talked over Undyne was always there to repeat what she said. Sans, also remaining calm, didn't say much but when he did the others listened. Even though they argued with what he said sometimes.
You almost wished you could be included in a family like this. Unfortunately you were just an outsider looking in.
"hey," Sans said after a period of lazy silence. "why don't we play more karaoke?"
"But we already did that." Undyne groaned.
"yeah, but now we have two famous singers instead of just one." He replied, flashing that toothy smile at you. "and, instead of just singing we could have a competition."
"WHAT AN EXCELLENT IDEA BROTHER!" Papyrus clapped. "AND IT WOULD GIVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A LIVE PERFORMANCE FROM SUCH AMAZING SINGERS!"
"I don't know." You flushed again from the complement. It wasn't like you weren't often complemented, but coming from Papyrus it somehow seemed more meaningful. Also you were a bit nervous at the prospect. Performing in front of a crowd of strangers was one thing. Performing for a small group was entirely different. In some ways it was a lot more intimate.
"Hm, I think it could be fun." Mettaton purred. "What do you say, darling? Want to show these wannabes how true performers sing?" You flushed a little deeper.
"That sounds like a challenge Mettaton!" Undyne practically roared. "Alphys and I could take you anyday!"
"I-I don't know a-about that Undyne." Alphys sputtered shyly. Undyne hauled Alphys to her feet and pressed a quick kiss to her cheek. You realized that they must be a couple. Alphys blushed brightly. Aw, how cute.
"Come on (y/n)!" Mettaton urged you.
"YES! I THINK IT WILL BE MOST EXCITING WHEN I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS AND MY BROTHER SANS SHOWS EVERYONE WHO REALLY ARE THE BEST SINGERS!"
"haha, i think i'll sit this one out." Sans laughed a little nervously, leaning back against the couch.
"BUT THEN I WILL NOT HAVE A PARTNER!" Papyrus cried in disdain.
"what about Frisk?"
Frisk shook her head rapidly and clambered onto Toriel's lap. "It looks like she wishes to sing with me." Toriel laughed lightly.
"PLEASE SANS?" Papyrus whined. Sans made a face, his usually permanent smile falling. You caught onto the situation fairly quickly. It looked like Sans had a bit of stage fright. You smiled, knowing exactly what to do. One thing you noticed when playing the shooter game was Sans' competitive spirit. Even though he looked like he didn't have a care in the world, he actually preferred to win. Unless it was against Papyrus.
"Looks like Sans doesn't think he can take the power team." You grinned, standing up and looping your arm through Mettaton's. Sans narrowed his eyes slightly at you. You gave Mettaton a look and he quickly caught onto what you were doing.
"Indeed. It seems he's too afraid to take on the challenge."
"Or too lazy." Undyne snickered.
"Oh, and it would seem that Papyrus has no chance of winning if he does not have a partner."
Papyrus' usual massive grin faded and he slouched his shoulders. Sans gave you a look that said he knew exactly what you were doing. But then Papyrus gave him what I assumed was his version of puppy-dog eyes. It was adorable, and it finally cracked Sans' shell. "fine, but only one song." He finally sighed in agreement. Practically everyone let out a whoop of victory.
