Chapter 1 - Garroth's POV

"Garroth! Get down here!" My father's voice called from downstairs. I sighed and rubbed my forehead as I stood up, walking down the staircase where my father stood, holding my brother, Vylad's, ear strictly.

"Yes, father?" I asked quietly.

"Did you finish all of your chores?" He asked, finally letting go of Vylad. He rubbed his ear, trying to get rid of the stinging pain.

"We finished the majority," I breathed, already seeing what would happen to come.

He brought his hand across my cheek and grabbed my shirt collar, "You will finish all of your chores. You'll have no dinner tonight, neither of you. You should be more like Zane," he let go of my collar, "At least he finishes his work."

He grabbed his beer bottle sitting on the kitchen island and went down the hallway towards his bedroom, our mother probably being his next target. I walked over to Vylad and put a hand on his shoulder, "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine," he said, lowering his eyes.

"Did he do anything to you?"

"Just shoved me towards the counter, but I'm not hurt," he sighed, "We best finish those chores and start dinner."

"I guess so." The two of us wiped down the counters and cleaned the spoiled food out of the refrigerator, and finishing up with preparing pasta for our other three family members.

During their meal, we cleaned out the bowls and pots we used to make their dinner, then cleaning their plates and silverware once they were done.

I went into my bedroom afterwards and sat at my desk, throwing my head in my hands and groaning quietly. Curse this wretched life I was forced to live in. Of course, I knew that I could leave whenever I wanted to, but without anywhere to go and a purpose to leave wasn't enough of a reason to go. How would I even succeed in leaving this life?

I sat at the window, looking out at the suburban streets. Through my earbuds, Ashes Remain was playing quietly to keep my mind distracted. There were teenagers out on the road, talking or riding bikes. Families were out in the park having barbecues, laughing with each other.

Why couldn't my life be like that?

Outside of the computer screen, I knew nobody of my age and only had my family, what little my father meant to me.

Oh, how I would love to be able to be with my friends connected over the Internet. They understood me when you look past the teasing and petty little arguments. It was like fate brought us together.
