Ch 2: No Such Thing As Teamwork

DISCLAIMER: In my dreams I own Naruto, but in reality I'm a bum with no life :3

Ch 2: No Such Thing As Teamwork
___________________________________________________________________________

Riko's POV

Alarm blaring in my ear, I slam my palm against the off button, silencing the music from hell. Groggily, I open my eyes to meet the dark lit room. Tearing the comforters off my sleep deprived body, I'm met with the cold temperatures of my room.

I repeat the same morning routine of showering and dressing myself. Tying the utility belt around my waist, I'm ready to go. Grabbing my bag of weapons, I leave my room and make my way towards the kitchen to eat a small breakfast. I'm not going to skip breakfast, food is meant to be eaten.

My mom's sleeping since she doesn't wake up til later in the morning. So the kitchen should be empty. Walking in, I see that I'm wrong. Dressed in his ANBU gear, my brother is eating rice and sushi with a side of wasabi.

"Morning, Ranko," I greet smiling.

He jumps, startled, "h-hey, Riko. What are you doing up so early," he asks with a hand over his chest.

"My sensei said we're doing a survival exercise today," I finish with a yawn.

"Who's your sensei," he curiously asks as he continues to eat his food.

"His name's Kakashi Hatake," I answer as I serve myself cereal.

"What," he exclaims, spitting out his food. Eww. "You mean, The Hatake Prodigy? He and Itachi Uchiha were both student prodigies! Kakashi graduated from the academy at the age of 6! Be wary of him, he's intelligent and strong, don't face him by yourself. Use teamwork," Ranko explains before cleaning his mess.

"A-at 6," I spit out my cereal with wide eyes.

"Yeah, anyways, I need to get going. I have a mission, so I'll be home later. Bye sis," he says, kissing my head before disappearing.

Finishing my cereal quickly, I look at the clock, 4:48 am. Putting my bowl in the sink and cleaning my mess, I grab my bag and silently run out of the house.

The morning is barley waking up, birds chirping happily, early risers getting their errands started, shops opening, and shinobi running back foward from the Hokage tower.

I gingerly walk towards the training ground, humming a tune, as the sun slowly rises from the horizon. Arriving at the meeting point, I'm met with my somewhat awake team. Sasuke who's purely awake has his arms crossed over his chest as he glares down at the grass. Naruto, he's sprawled across the floor, wanting to catch some more shut-eye. Sakura, she's sitting against a training post, slowly falling asleep as her eyelids droop.

"Hey guys," I say cheerfully.

"Hn."

"I see no one's a morning person," I chirp to myself s no one responds.

Since no one's talking, I decide to read. Walking to the middle of the field, I throw off my bag of weapons and lie back across the grassy terrain. My right hand reaches my weapon's pouch and takes out the anatomy book. I turn to a page where it shows a diagram of the heart.

'In Figure B, the heart is the muscle in the lower half of the picture. The heart has four chambers. The heart's upper chambers, the right and left atria (ay-tree-uh) are shown in purple. The heart's lower chamber, the right and left ventricles (ven-trih-kuls) are shown in red.
Some of the main blood vessels (arteries and veins) that make up your circulatory system are directly connected to your heart.
The Right Side of Your Heart:
In Figure B above, the superior and inferior vena cavae are shown in blue to the left of the heart muscle as you-'

"What are you reading," a voice asks.

I yelp in surprise, instantly sitting up. I look up as my heart races only to find the brooding boy standing next to me.

"U-uh, I'm reading about the human heart. It's a book about the human anatomy since I'm studying  Medical Ninjutsu," I explain to Sasuke.

"You're studying? This early," he asks as his eyes SLIGHTLY widen.

"Yeah, I always study, it's one of my hobbies," I smile.

"So why study Medical Ninjutsu," Sasuke asks.

Why's he suddenly talking to me?

"Uh, because, since I'm not that strong, I want to help people, make them feel better, save them," I say, simply explaining my reason.

"Hn," he grunts.

"So what do you do in your spare time," I curiously ask.

"I train," he replies.

"Ah, anything in particular? You know, Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, accuracy in weapons, speed, stuff like that," I ask, giving examples.

"Everything," he says, lacking information.

Okay then...

"If you want I could train with you? I mean, I'm not that good in Ninjutsu, I just know some basic justus, but I'm great at Taijutsu," I explain.

"Hn," comes his answer.

I pout, "I don't mean to pry, but you're training so you could defeat...him, right," I ask.

He instantly glares at me, "so what? It's none of your business," he seethes.

I struck a nerve.

"I know it's none of my business, but we're a team and I thought I could help you," I say. "Well, in training."

"What can you help me in," he asks full of irritation.

"Well, my clan specializes in Earth Release and Taijutsu, so I could help you. Make you learn how to attack and defend, your posture, how to notice the person's weak points, and also by adding chakra to your attacks so they'll be more effective," I explain with a smile.

"Hn, maybe," he grunts, still frowning.

"I'll take that as a yes," I smile. "It won't be too hard, I mean, you're an Uchiha, you excel in pretty much everything. Intelligence, Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu, you'll learn in no time!"

"Hn, your right," he smirks.

Maybe I filled his ego too much.

"Great! Now attack me," I say standing up.

"What," he says baffled.

"Attack. Me," I urge.

"No," he declines.

"Why? Are you too weak. Too scared to hit a girl? Just hit me you ba-"

I get cut off as he runs towards me, filled with anger. His emotions blinding him. A fist raised wanting to hit me. I smirk. Just as he's about to land the hit, I grab his fist.

"Don't let emotions blind you, they make your attacks sloppy," I say as I direct a kick to his side.

Landing the kick, I let go of his fist making him stumble back.

"Clear your mind," I say wisely, bringing my hands up.

#####

After a few hours of training, he's managed to land a few hits on me. I punched and kicked him several times, giving him tips every time. He improved to a new level, but not that much. Right now, we're sitting on the grass waiting for Kakashi to arrive as I heal the bruised Sasuke.

Placing my hands on his back, I let my hands glow to their mint color as it hums. I focus on the epidermis, the top layer of skin, since it's all bruised and beaten. Pouring my chakra into his body, I heal the abrasions. Eventually, after a few minutes, his skin appears to be flawless.

"There all done," I say as I take my hands off.

"Hn, thanks," he says.

In that time, Naruto decides to wake up. I see as he groggily sits up. His azure eyes scan the training grounds before he exclaims.

"He's not here yet?! If he was going to be this late why did he tell us to come early," he shouts waking the sleeping beauty.

"Hn," Sasuke grunts with irritation.

"Maybe it's to teach us patience," I suggest.

"Wrong. He just likes making us wait," Naruto declines, I think.

Waiting is patience.

"Argh, why's he not here yet," Sakura cries.

I sigh at their bickering, it's child's play. I block them out as I look up at the sky, watching the passing clouds. Maybe hanging out with Shikamaru was a bad idea, I caught his habit. The soft fluff clouds drift down the sky with a fluid motion.

"YOU'RE LATE," Naruto and Sakura shout in synch.

I turn my gaze to the fashionably late sensei. Squatting on the training post he gives us his usual closed eye smile, waving at us.

"Sorry, a black cat crossed my path so I had to take the long way," he says obviously lying.

"LIAR," they scream in synch once again.

"Well, let's get started, you have until noon to take away one of these bells," he says pulling out three silver bells.

"Wait, why are there only three bells," Sakura states the obvious.

"Oh. Because only the one who doesn't take the bell, fails. Come at me with the intention to kill and you could use any weapons," he explains while informing us.

"But sensei those are dangerous," Sakura exclaims with worry.

"Yeah, you couldn't even dodge the eraser," Naruto boasts, smirking.

"The weakest one's are always the one who barks," Kakashi says referring to Naruto.

The said boy growls in anger whilst running towards our sensei. Kunai in hand, he aims for an attack. Fortunately, Kakashi being a Jounin, or prodigy, dodges whilst taking Naruto's hand and bending it behind the blonde's head.

"Wha...?"

"I didn't say start yet. I'm beginning to like you guys," he says letting go of Naruto. "Okay. Ready, set, start!"

I leap towards the trees along with Sasuke and Sakura. Hiding up in the branches of the tree, I'm hidden within the leaves. I look around the terrain, and immediately spot Sakura's pink hair sticking out like a sore thumb. She's hiding, but not that good, which is in the bushes below Sasuke's tree. A jab stabs my heart. Even in a sense of 'danger' she still chases after him. I dart my concentration back at Kakashi, only to facepalm.

"You and me, right here, right now," Naruto exclaims with his hands on his hips.

"You know compared to the others, you're a bit weird," Kakashi states.

"The only weird thing here is your hairstyle," Naruto insults, pointing to Kakashi.

Really? I think it's cool, how it defies the laws of physics.

"Fine, shinobi lesson number one, the Art of Taijutsu; hand to hand combat," the latter says, pointing one finger up.

He then moves his hand towards his weapons pouch, making me watch with anticipation.

I thought it was only hands, so why is he getting a weapon?

Slipping his hand into the beige colored pouch, he immediately takes it out. In his hand is an open book. It's an orange book with a picture of a man chasing a lady reading Icha Icha Paradise. My eyes widen in horror.

O-our sensei is a...PERVERT!

I silently observe the way they fight, well, more how Naruto tries to hit him and how Kakashi blocks him while reading the pornographic literature. I could see Naruto getting fed up with being underestimated and let's his anger blind his motions. He charges towards a crouching Kakashi with a raised fist having intentions to land a hit. He runs, getting closer and just as he's inches away, Kakashi disappears. Only to appear right behind him, with the Tiger hand sign.

"Here's a tip. Never let your enemies get behind you," Kakashi informs with an evil glint in his eye.

Move you idiot!

"Naruto, get out of there," Sakura screams, revealing her hiding spot.

Idiot! I facepalm.

"Wha...

"Too late! Secret Art: A Thousand Years of Pain," Kakashi exclaims.

I watch with widened eyes as he thrusts his fingers up Naruto's butt? Naruto flies to river screaming in pain as he grips his ass.

I'm surrounded by idiots, I sweatdrop with embarrassment.

I turn away from the disturbing sight and think about the test. So there's three bells and four of us. This test was made to to pit us against each other since there's less bells than us. Everybody will want a bell for themselves, resulting in us competing against each other. We'll be too blinded by our selfish needs to see the real meaning of the test. Our need in wanting to pass will get in the way. We're also up against Kakashi, who's a Jounin. My brother said he graduated the academy at age six. That he's a prodigy. That he's intelligent. He also said to be wary of him.

Then my mind clicks.

Teamwork! He also said to use teamwork. That's the answer! Thank you, my dear brother, for giving me such great advice!

I immediately dart my red eyes towards the pinkette, she'll surely work with me seeing as I'm her friend. Then my eyes dart to the Uchiha, he'll probably work with me as well, if he's not too arrogant. Quietly jumping down from my tree, I crouch towards the floor, not wanting to be seen. I slowly and silently make my way towards the girl I like. I could hear Naruto and Kakashi continuing to fight.

"It seems that you're hungry," Kakashi states as Naruto's stomach growls.

Ha! I'm not. I ate cereal this morning and look, I didn't even puke.

Ignoring them, I make my way towards the pinkette. After a few seconds of stealthily crouching, I made it next to her. I place my hand on her shoulder making her jump. I quickly place my free hand on her mouth, not wanting her to scream. I turn her body towards me and lift a finger to my lips indicating her to be quiet. She nods, eyes still wide with surprise. Lowering my hand from her mouth, I kneel next to her.

"So, Sakura, want to work together on getting a bell," I ask full of hope.

I see as she tilts her head in thought and her eyebrows furrow with debate.

"Sorry, Riko, but I'm going to work with Sasuke," she explains, making my heart sink.

"But S-"

"Sorry, Riko," she cuts me off, before chasing Sasuke.

I clutch the front of my shirt, it's not bleeding, but it hurts so much right here.

Pushing the pain away, I stumble through the forest with a blank face. It's always Sasuke! Why can't she never notice me? Listening to Naruto's screams for help, it leads me to his distress calls. Reaching the clearing in the forest, I spot a hanging Naruto as he swings from his legs. Taking out a kunai, I spin it in my fingers before I throw it with accuracy. The metal blade rips the the rope, with gravity doing its work it makes Naruto crash on the ground with a strong impact.

"Thanks, Riko," Naruto says, sitting up.

"Hey, Naruto, do you want to work together, maybe go two against one on Kakashi. It's a better chance to win the bells," I say, trying to convince him.

"Sorry, Riko, but if I want to become Hokage, I need to do this alone," he says before running off.

"Well, a Hokage also needs to be smart," I mutter to myself.

I need to work on a plan on getting us to work together, but Sakura's too obsessed with Sasuke to think straight. Naruto, he thinks that working alone will make him become the Hokage, he doesn't notice that he can't do everything alone. Sasuke, he's too arrogant and thinks he could do it alone as well, maybe he could, but it doesn't hurt if someone helps him.

Trudging through the forest, I think of the many ways I could make this team work together.

I could lie. Nah, I'm horrible at lying, they'd see right through it.

I could work with Sakura if I say that we'll be getting bells for Sasuke, then I could grab all of them. Yeah that could work......no, Kakashi's too strong for two genin. Especially if it's only me fighting.

I could work with Sasuke and threaten not to train him....nah, I'm too nice. I wouldn't live with myself if I didn't help him train.

Maybe with Naruto, but Kakashi already knows how Naruto fights and I'm not that strong, so that's a no.

Ugh! Too complicated!

In this team there's no such thing as teamwork. They're too selfish.

A scream pierces through the sky and immediately dash towards it. I know Sasuke doesn't sound that girly and I already heard how naruto sounds when he screams. So it's Sakura. Running, my purple strands of hair dance with the wind as I play the role of a hero, saving the damsel in distress. Running through the trees, I crash against the bushes ignoring the scrapes. Arriving at the clearing, I spot the girl I like, unconscious, on the forest floor. Falling to my knees, I crawl towards her fallen state with caution and alert.

Placing my hand on her neck, checking her pulse. She's still alive. Looking closely, her chest is heaving up and down, her breaths uncontrolled and unsteady. Must be a Genjutsu. Placing my palm on her forehead, I insert a steady flow of chakra in her body, breaking the Genjutsu. Seconds later, she gasps out of breath and abruptly sits up, her emerald eyes filled with alert and worry.

"Sakura, it's okay. It was just a Genjutsu, an illusion, all fake," I explain.

"B-but S-Sasuke h-he was hurt. H-he was in danger," she says, eyes brimmed with tears.

"All fake. Sasuke's perfectly fine," I inform.

She abruptly pulls me in a hug, "I w-was so scared, I-I thought he died," she quivers.

She really loves him.

"It's okay," my voice cracks.

"Thanks, Riko, you're a great friend," she smiles.

If only I was more.

"You're welcome," I falsely smile.

Before I got to say something else, Sakura runs off, searching for the boy she loves. With a clenching sensation in my chest, I go the other way trudging down the clearing. Well, that was until I fell flat on my face.

"Wha..." I say confused as I stand back up.

Turning around, I spot Sasuke, well his head, on the floor. I realize that Kakashi used the Head Hunter Jutsu, which is an Earth based technique. Forming hand signs, I yell.

"Earth Style: Head Hunter Jutsu," I exclaim.

Forming chakra into my hand, I reach through the earth's surface and grab Sasuke's arm before pulling him out, setting him free. Getting him out, I release his arm and look back to the hole in the ground. Using my Kekkei Genkai, I make a hand sign and force the ground to repair itself. As the ground closes, I fall to my knees exhausted. Forcing nature to my will always tires me out.

"How'd you do that," Sasuke says, referring to the hole.

"It's my Kekkei Genkei, it allows me to use nature at my will," I explain panting, out of breath.

"Hn," he grunts.

"Do you want to work together. If we do, we have a chance at gaining the bells," I say, still breathing hard.

"Hn, no. You'll slow me down," he dismisses the idea of working together.

Just as I'm about to retort, Sakura comes running into the clearing.

Great, with Sasuke here, I'm invisible.

"Sasuke," she squeals. "Do you want to work together, like get a bell I mean," she asks shyly while blushing.

"I touched one," he says, monotone.

"A bell? That's great," she happily exclaims.

"I need to defeat him," he says darkly.

"Who Kakashi? There's no time it's almost noon. Maybe we should try again next year," she cluelessly states.

"No," he glares at her. "I have no time to wait for another year. He's out there. The crying...I'm an avenger so I can't just sit here and do nothing!"

The weird conversation gets cut off as the timer rings through the air, alerting us that our time ran out.

I sigh, great. I wasted my time, trying to make us work together. I didn't get a bell. I didn't pass. Now I'll be a disgrace to my clan, and my father will hate me. Just great.

I get up from the floor and shamefully walk towards the posts as I gingerly pass the others. Walking through the clearing, I eventually make it to the posts. I'm met with a tied up Naruto who's looking down at the grass in shame. I spot Kakashi by the Memorial Stone who's blankly looking at us. I walk towards the posts and set myself down on the grass besides Naruto. It doesn't take long until both Sasuke and Sakura meet us. As if on cue their stomachs growl in hunger along with Naruto's.

"Oh! You guys look really hungry. Oh and by the way, something about the training. Well there's no need for you guys to go back to the academy..."

"Yeah," Naruto grins.

"Huh? All I did was faint and fall over. Do I get points for that," Sakura says to herself.

"Hn," Sasuke smirks.

"Hmm," I narrow my eyes.

Something's not right.

"Yup, all three of you should quit as shinobi," he says matter of factly.

Three? There's four of us.

"You said three, why's that? I mean, there's four of us," I ask pointing it out to him.

He goes to answer me, but gets cut off.

"Quit as ninjas?! What does that mean," Naruto exclaims while kicking his legs in a wild manner.

"Okay, okay. We couldn't get the bells, but why do we have to quit," Sakura obliviously asks.

I may like you, but REALLY?

"Because the three of you are just punks who don't deserve to be ninjas," Kakashi informs while insulting them.

Upon hearing this, Sasuke gets angry and blindly runs towards the Jounin. Didn't I tell him to not let his emotions blind him? Unfortunately, with Kakashi being a high ranked Jounin, Sasuke's attack becomes fruitless. In the end Kakashi ended up pinning the genin to the ground.

"Hey!"

"Sasuke-kun!"

"That's why you're a punk," Kakashi states.

"No!!! Don't step on Sasuke-kun like he's some bug," Sakura exclaims angrily, but with slight worry.

"Are you guys underestimating ninja? Huh? Why do you think you were divided into teams and are doing this training," Kakashi asks with irritation; angry.

"Huh? What does that mean," Sakura, once again asks obliviously.

Really?

"You guys are not understanding the answer to this test," he simply informs for the dumb witted.

"Answer," Naruto cluelessly states.

"Yes, the answer that helps you pass this test," Kakashi replies.

"So...when are you going to tell us," Sakura asks.

Kakashi's glances to me, "Riko, why don't you tell them," he ushers.

"T-the answer's teamwork," I inform the three, not looking at them.

"Correct! The four of you working together may have gotten the bells," Kakashi states.

The three of them get a look of realization painted across their faces as their eyes widen.

Sakura immediately stands, "What do you mean by teamwork?! There are only three bells! Even if we work together and get the bells, one of us will still fail! What teamwork? That just makes us fight each other," she shouts a variety of questions.

"Of course! This test is purposely set up to fight amongst yourselves," Kakashi simply explains.

"Huh?"

"The purpose is to see whether you can forget your own interest and successfully work together under these designed circumstances," Kakashi informs us on the true purpose.

"Yet you guys...Sakura! Instead of Naruto who was in front of you, you were only thinking about Sasuke who was far away. You even declined Riko's offer twice even though she helped you," he says making Sakura look down in shame.

"Naruto! You were just running around by yourself. Just like Sakura, you declined Riko even though she cut you down," he scolds making him look down as well.

"Sasuke! You just assumed the others would get in your way and tried do everything by yourself. You as well declined Riko even when she freed you from my jutsu," he explains, making him glare at the grass.

"Riko! Even when you helped them and offered them your help, you didn't try hard enough," he states.

Well, that's true. I wasn't persistent enough.

"The duties are done by the team, but what's even more important is teamwork," the Jounin explains.

True, if a team can't show teamwork, they won't be able to successfully complete missions.

"Individual play that disrupts the team can put your comrades in danger and even get them killed. For example...Sakura kill Naruto or Sasuke dies! Riko kill Sakura or they both die," he says while taking a Kunai and placing it on Sasuke's neck.

I stand frozen in place.

I-I can't kill her, but if I d-don't t-then b-both Naruto and Sasuke die. It's either the girl I like, or my teammates.

"W-WHAT," both Naruto and Sakura shout in synch.

"You see? If a hostage is taken, you will have tough choices and die. You will be risking your lives for these duties," Kakashi informs, getting off Sasuke.

I sigh in relief, no killing today. That's good.

I watch as our sensei makes his way towards the Memorial Stone, his shoulder slightly hunched over. I bet he knows some of people whose name's are on there.

"Look at this. The numerous names carved on this stone. These are ninjas who are recognized as heroes of the village," Kakashi says, a bit too solemnly.

"Hey! Hey, hey, hey, hey! I've decided to get my name carved on that stone too! Hero! Hero!! That's what I'll become," Naruto exclaims, full of naive.

"Hn."

"Idiot," I mutter lowly.

"But they aren't just normal heroes..." Kakashi trails off.

"Oh yeah?! Than what kind are they," he continues to be naive. "What?! What! What!"

"They are all heroes who all died while on duty," Kakashi finishes sadly.

I watch as Naruto's grin disappears as his face falls with remorse, sadly groaning. I bow my head in respect as a silence lingers in the air.

"You guys I'll give you another chance. This time I'll make it tougher. If you wish to take the challenge, eat lunch, but you can't give any to Naruto as a punishment for trying to eat the lunches earlier. If you give him any, you'll automatically fail. I am the rules here, got it," he says before using the Transportation Jutsu, disappearing.

Grabbing a bento box, I gingerly sit in a criss cross position. Opening the box the delicious aroma hits my nose, making my stomach growl for food. I watch the other two eat nonchalantly as Naruto's stomach growls hungrily, sounding like a dying animal.

I already ate. I had breakfast earlier, he didn't.

Ignoring his protests to accept food, I shove a piece of sushi in his mouth silencing him.

"Eat," I order.

"Riko! What are you doing, you'll fail," Sakura cries in worry.

"I had breakfast earlier, so I'm not as hungry. Besides he'll need food if he wants to participate in the challenge or else he'll slow us down," I explain.

Seeing as his mouth is clear of food, I shove another piece of sushi before he has the chance to talk. Sasuke takes my side as he too feeds Naruto food.

"Sasuke?"

"She's right, he'll slow us down. He needs the energy," Sasuke explains to Sakura.

I watch as she offers her food as well, "I'm on a diet, I-I mean, I don't eat as much as you, ah, whatever just take it," she exclaims, pushing her food forward.

"I can't," Naruto says. "My hands are tied."

"Huh," a look of realization dawns on her. "Fine! This is a one time thing, got it," she defends.

I watch as she raises her chopsticks to his mouth as she places vegetables in his mouth. Just as she does that, Kakashi appears, looking angry.

"You! You defied my rules," he exclaims, making several hand signs.

The sunny atmosphere becomes dark as clouds reign in, drawing the levels of suspense. For even more suspense, lightning clashes against the sky for a dramatic effect.

"Do you have any last words," Kakashi says murderously.

"But you said..." Naruto trails off, nervously sweating.

"Yes?"

"We're a team," Sasuke states.

"Yeah, the four of us are one," Sakura chirps.

"Yeah! We're a team and that means, no one gets left behind or forgotten," I say, adding myself to the conversation.

"You guys....Pass ❤," Kakashi says giving us a closed eye smile.

"Huh?"

"You guys are the first to disobey my rules. You see a ninja must see underneath the underneath. Those who break the rules and codes of the ninja world are called trash...but you know what? Those who don't take care of their comrades...are lower than trash," he says giving us valuable information.

"Kyaa~" Sakura squeals in admiration.

"That ends the training. All of you pass! Okay!! Tomorrow, Team Seven will begin its duties," Kakashi says, giving us a thumbs up.

"Finally," I groan, throwing my head back.

"YAY! I DID IT!!! I DID IT! I DID IT!!! NINJA! NINJA! BELIEVE IT," Naruto exclaims, cheering.

In celebration, we all walk out of the training grounds with our packs, happy that we passed.

"Dammit! I knew this would happen," Naruto yells.

That's right, we forgot to untie him.

I turn around and run back, not wanting to leave Naruto tied up. Running, I take out a kunai from its holster. I reach the flailing blonde and cut the rope, freeing him.

"Thanks, Riko," he grins.

"No problem," I smile.
