26. Bickering & the Weird Spider Guy.

Now suited up and ready, Steve leaves the interior airport and runs toward a helicopter on the tarmac. He only gets about half of the way there before a small, metal object lands on the helicopter and sends shocks of electricity through it. Unsurprisingly, Steve looks up to see Tony in his Iron Man suit above, with Rhodey following quickly behind him.

Tony lands about ten feet across from Steve, and Rhodey lands beside him. "Wow. It's so weird how you run into people at the airport," Tony jokes. His mask disappears from around his head as he turns to Rhodey. "Don't you think that's weird?"

"Definitely weird," Rhodey agrees with a nod.

"Hear me out, Tony," Steve interjects. Maybe, just maybe, if he can explain all of this, Tony might just listen to him and understand. "That doctor, the psychiatrist, he's behind all of this."

A dark figure leaps over from behind some machinery, and when he lands, they can see that it's T'Challa, back in his suit. "Captain," he greets, his voice low.

"Your Highness," Steve replies.

"Where's my daughter, Rogers?" Tony asks.

All the humor and lightheartedness previously in his tone had morphed into nothing but anger. His eyes dart around from Steve to T'Challa, to the windows of each building, the corners, and the machinery, hoping that he'll spot her and she'll be safe with him again. But he doesn't see her.

"Hiding, Tony," Steve answers. He sounds sympathetic, in a way, but it just adds to Tony's frustration. Steve doesn't understand anything. If he has any sympathy at all, it sure as hell isn't swaying his decisions. Tony only wants his kid back, and then maybe they could work this all out.

Tony scoffs, his eyes squinting in confusion— though the sting of the bruise around his right eye isn't the greatest feeling. "What, from me?" he asks.

"From everyone. Including you." Tony rolls his eyes at Steve's answer, but Steve pays that no mind, only continuing. "You don't get it, Tony. I don't either, really. But Bucky does, and he can-"

"What, so he gets to keep her, then? What the hell are you talking about, Cap? You think you're helping her by taking her from me?" Tony argues.

He knows there are things he'll never be able to understand about Mazzy or what happened to her, but he knows that no matter what happens, he can do his best to help her. He just wants her. He wants to help her and take care of her and keep her safe, but as long as she's with them, he can't do that.

When Steve gives him no answer, Tony figures he'll just get back to his job. He'll bring Steve and the lot in, and bring Mazzy home on the way. Simple as that. Steve wants to go the hard way, the hard way it'll be. "Ross gave me thirty-six hours to bring you in. That was twenty-four hours ago. Can you help a brother out?"

Steve lets out a sigh. "What do you think Ross is gonna want with Mazzy once he finds out she's just the same as Bucky?" he asks. Tony stays silent, but Steve can see the gears turning in his head, and he can see the turmoil.

The same as Bucky? Mazzy isn't the same as Bucky. She's different. She's his kid.

Ross won't take her away, will he?

"With us, she's safe until this is all sorted out. I won't let her get hurt. You know I won't," Steve promises. And it's true. It's not just him, either. Bucky, too. And Sam and the others. All of them would do anything if it meant Mazzy ended up okay. Tony's hesitant to trust anyone with her, though, and it's obvious to see. "You're after the wrong people."

"Your judgment is askew," Tony bites back. His muscles are tight and his tone is tense, and there's this burning feeling in his chest that just keeps growing. "Your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday."

"And your daughter was right by his side, helping him. It's not them, Tony," Steve insists. He isn't sure if Tony quite understands that yet. But he has to. "And there are five more super soldiers just like them. I can't let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can't."

"Steve." Steve turns around to see Natasha walking up behind him. "You know what's about to happen. Do you really wanna punch your way out of this one?"

Without an answer, Steve just turns back to Tony.

"Alright, I've run out of patience. Underoos!"

Mazzy has made her decision, and she knows that her dad is going to be angry, both with her and with everyone else helping her. It makes her feel pretty guilty, but Sam promises that it's not her fault. It's Hydra's fault, and it's Secretary Ross's fault, and it is most definitely not Mazzy's fault. Sam swears up and down. But that doesn't make the guilty feeling go away.

"He looks really mad," Mazzy murmurs, tapping her fingers against the glass railing that she, Bucky, and Sam are all crouched beside, looking out at Steve and the others. "I think he's really mad."

"Well, of course, he's mad," Sam replies without really thinking about it. He's too focused on steering Redwing and finding the Quinjet the others must have arrived in so they can get out of this airport.

"Not at you, Star," Bucky clarifies.

"Yeah. At us. 'Cause we kidnapped you," Sam adds with a nod.

Mazzy's eyebrows shoot up— not because she's supposedly kidnapped; she's well aware of that— when she sees a guy in a tight red and blue suit jump down from who knows where, use some sort of stringy stuff to steal Steve's shield and tie up his hands, and land on top of a nearby machine. "Who the heck's that guy?" she asks.

"What guy?" Sam asks, still steering Redwing.

"That weird guy."

"What weird guy?"

"The weird guy with-"

"Wait. I got something," Sam says. Mazzy wishes she could see whatever he's seeing so that she'd know what he's talking about. He reaches up to his ear to talk to Steve through his earpiece, which Mazzy is also very jealous of. "We found it," he tells Steve. "The Quinjet's in hangar five, north runway."

Mazzy watches as Steve lifts his arms up in the air and an arrow, shot by Clint, of course, splits whatever stringy stuff the weird guy had in half. Her dad's helmet covers his head once more, which is bad because when he's got the helmet on, he's got Friday to help him find things, like how Sam has Redwing helping him find the Quinjet. But if Tony's got Friday, who knows how long until he'll find Mazzy?

"This is gonna be so bad," Mazzy murmurs.

"It's gonna be okay," Bucky tells her. He hopes he's not lying.

"Just listen to us and it'll be fine," Sam adds.

"I'm bad at listening. Literally," Mazzy says, looking at him with raised eyebrows and tapping her ear. "Plus, these have been acting wonky ever since Steve made us crash in the water."

"He did his best drying them off as soon as he saved your life. Be grateful you didn't drown," Sam tells her, raising his eyebrows too to mimic the look on her face.

"I'm a good swimmer," Mazzy counters.

"Not when you're unconscious," Sam reminds her.

Letting out a huff, Mazzy gives up and crosses her arms. She supposes she should be grateful to Steve, even though she's going to get in a lot of trouble by the end having run away from her dad and with her messed up hearing aids. Maybe the hearing aids have a warranty or something. Even though he's rich, Mazzy knows her dad is going to complain about the price of replacing them, just because that's what dads do.

Turning her attention back out the window, Mazzy looks just in time to see Rhodey looking right at her, Sam, and Bucky. "Uh oh."

"Alright. Time to go." Sam hops up off of the ground, Mazzy and Bucky quickly following after.

They begin running down the big airport hallways. Mazzy isn't completely sure what anything here is called because she doesn't really have to wait at the airport ever because she's only ever been in private jets and helicopters and everything, but this section of the airport probably has a name. It looks like where people wait to go on their planes. It's got lots of counters to sell stuff, but the prices are outrageous, in Mazzy's opinion. Four and a half euros for a bottle of water?! Mazzy's pretty sure that's, like, way too expensive when you translate it to American dollars.

That's not the point, though. That is extremely unimportant right now, actually, because now the weird guy in the red and blue suit is coming towards them, and he moves like a weirdo, too.

"What the hell is that?!" Bucky asks as they run.

"That's the weird guy! He's acting like a freaking spider!" Mazzy shouts.

"Everyone's got a gimmick now," Sam complains.

"You're the one dressed like a bird," Mazzy reminds him.

"Whose side are you on?"

"Um, yours."

"Right."

The Spider Guy shoots those little strings at the glass windows, and they must be sticky because they hold tight enough against the glass for the Spider Guy to use them to swing himself toward the windows and shatter the glass with his feet. Mazzy screams when she seems him coming towards them, but Sam ends up being the one the Spider Guy kicks, while Mazzy and Bucky are let off easy. At least, they are at first.

When Sam goes flying back against the wall, Bucky stops and swings his metal fist right at the Spider Guy, but the Spider Guy catches it and twists it to the side. "You have a metal arm? That is awesome, dude!"

Sam interrupts by tackling him and pulling him up into the air.

Mazzy watches at first as they struggle in the air, but then she turns to Bucky. "I knew he was weird before I even heard him talk," she says.

Bucky lets out a little laugh. "You really are smart."

"So smart that I know things before I actually know them," Mazzy adds, wiggling her eyebrows. She looks over at Sam and the Spider Guy again, and then back at Bucky. "We should probably help him. Or you should, actually, and I can just help if I feel like it."

"Sounds like a plan," Bucky sighs. Side by side, they start running after Sam and the Spider Guy, and when they get close enough, Bucky picks up a fallen sign and whips it up at the Spider Guy sort of like a frisbee. "Back, back, back," he quickly murmurs, pushing Mazzy back behind a pillar so the Spider Guy won't see them.

It's a bit futile, though.

"Hey, buddy, I think you lost this!"

The sign comes flying right back at them, smashing into the pillar next to Bucky's head.

"Goodness gracious," Mazzy mutters, glaring at the pillar as if it were see through and the Spider Guy could see her glaring.

She and Bucky peek around the other side of the now-disfigured pillar and see Sam stuck to the railing with those white stringy bits stuck to each of his arms, and the Weird Spider Guy is perched at the side of another pillar. Mazzy and Bucky quickly go back to hiding behind the pillar.

"Uh, okay," Bucky murmurs under his breath, wracking his brain for any idea on how to get out of this situation. "Okay. You need to hide."

"No, no. I can help," Mazzy insists.

"You can after he's gone."

"I can, like, kick him... in the face or something."

Bucky scoffs. "That is not going to work. Go hide, Mazzy. I'll distract him." And without leaving any room for Mazzy to argue, he rushes off to help Sam.

Unsurprisingly and unfortunately, Mazzy does not go hide.

Instead, she stays right where she is behind the pillar, trying to devise a plan in her head. All she needs to do is get Sam unstuck, and if Bucky's stuck, too, which he probably will be, she'll have to get him unstuck as well. And if she can't do that, then she'll just have to, like, fight the Weird Spider Guy, then. She isn't exactly sure how to do that, though, because she doesn't actually have any weapons on her at the moment. Not even a stick or something. Just herself.

Before Mazzy even gets the chance to sneak around to Sam and Bucky to get them unstuck, the Spider Guy is already addressing her, well aware of her presence behind the pillar.

"Look, Miss Stark, or, uh, Mazzy... can I call you Mazzy?" the Spider Guy asks.

"No," Mazzy answers instantly.

"Oh, okay, then. Well, your dad kind of wants you home for dinner, so..."

"I don't care!" Mazzy shouts. Unless dinner is popsicles. That may sway her decision. No, no, no. She must remain strong.

"I thought you might say that," the Spider Guy sighs.

"You stink! You're a bad superhero!" Mazzy yells, unsure of what else to do at the moment.

The Spider Guy seems to be a little offended by that, which is good. "What? I'm not a bad- you know what? I'm doing my best, and that's all that matters."

"Oh, brother," Mazzy mutters under her breath.

"I'm Peter, by the way," the Spider Guy introduces himself. His voice is getting suspiciously louder every time he says a word, which can mean only two things: he's either raising his voice every time he speaks, or he's getting closer to Mazzy. Mazzy's betting on the second one. "Um, I was told to bribe you with popsicles. Mr. Stark said you can have popsicles until you puke, if you want."

"He's a liar!" Mazzy shouts, because she knows she'll most likely have a popsicle limit of three at most.

"Hey, dude, don't shoot the messenger," Spider Guy— or Peter, apparently— says.

And his voice is close enough that it makes Mazzy's adrenaline spike. And that adrenaline spike is just what Mazzy needs in order to do something incredibly impulsive that might just possibly work.

Sam seems to have the same idea as her because right as Mazzy's about to jump out at Peter, Sam shouts, "Mazzy, now!"

It's the only confirmation Mazzy needs. She instantly jumps out at Peter and clambers up until she's on his back, trying to pin his arms behind him. As they fight against each other's abnormal amounts of strength for their ages, they also shout very immature insults at each other. Sam and Bucky watch this whole ordeal with exhausted and confused looks on their faces.

"You're a total weirdo loser idiot in ugly pajamas!" Mazzy shouts through frustrated grunts as she struggles to keep hold of Peter's flailing arms.

"You're a strange little girl running away with a freaky bird guy and two a-hundred-something-year-olds!" Peter retorts.

It's not a great insult, though, because Mazzy already knows that she's a strange little girl running away with a freaky bird guy and two a-hundred-something-year-olds. It's pretty obvious, so, as she's twisting Peter's arm so far backward that he's sure it's going to pop right out of its socket, Mazzy spits out, "Tell me something I don't know!"

"Why are you so strong?!" Peter sputters out, trying to free himself from her grasp.

"My dad didn't tell you much, did he?" Mazzy scoffs. She pulls harder. "Maybe I'm not that strong. Maybe you're just weak!" It isn't true but it's mean, so.

"I'm super strong!" Peter argues.

"Nuh-uh!"

"Yeah-huh!" Peter finally manages to free one of his arms from Mazzy's grasp and he uses it to swing them forward towards the exit of the airport, hoping that she won't notice and he'll just be able to bring her out to Tony like that. Hoping isn't enough, though. Mazzy instantly lets go of him, but before she can fall, he catches her wrist. "Hey! You're coming with me!"

"No, I'm not!" Mazzy shouts just as Redwing slams into Peter's side. His grip on Mazzy's wrist instantly loosens and Mazzy's able to free herself before Peter and Redwing smash through the window and go flying off onto the tarmac.

This still, however, leaves Mazzy to fall about fifteen feet down to the floor. It hurts like hell, but Mazzy makes sure to cover her head with her arms and keeps in mind that no matter how bad it hurts, it'll all be okay again in just a few minutes.

Coincidentally, she lands just between Sam and Bucky, who are still pinned to the ground by, apparently, spider webs.

"Owww," she groans, squeezing her eyes shut.

"You couldn't have done that earlier?" Bucky murmurs to Sam.

"I hate you," Sam mutters in response.

As soon as the pain melts away into nothingness, Mazzy sits up and shoves her hair out of her face. "That guy was so annoying," she complains.

"You were both so annoying," Sam tells her. Listening to the bickering was worse than being one of the bickerers, in his opinion.

"He was annoying-er," Mazzy says.

"Fine. Sure. Now, will you help us out, here?" Sam asks, nodding over at his hand, which is still stuck to the ground.

"Yeah, sure," Mazzy says. She first tugs at the webbing with her hands, thinking she'll be able to just rip it off, but that isn't the case. The webbing is, first of all, incredibly sticky, and second of all, incredibly strong. It's annoying. "Um, either of you got a knife or something?"

Bucky nods. "It's a small one, but I have a pocket knife in my jacket," he says.

Mazzy goes over to him and pulls the knife from his pocket. He's right. It is small, but it'll work. "This also could've been helpful earlier, you know," she murmurs as she cuts the webbing from around his wrist.

"You also could have listened to me," Bucky huffs, getting up off the ground.

"It worked out, though," Mazzy says, shrugging. She goes over to Sam and frees him as well, after a lot of cutting.

"Well, you're gonna have to actually listen this time, Maz. Because we're not gonna be there to help you out if you get yourself into trouble," Bucky says very seriously. Mazzy does not particularly like very-seriousness. "We have to go help out Steve, but you need to get to the Quinjet. We'll meet you there."

"I can help Steve, too," Mazzy says.

"You're not helping us fight your dad, kid. Get to the Quinjet," Sam backs Bucky.

And even though Mazzy considers arguing, she doesn't. She doesn't want to fight her dad. Not really. So she nods. "I'll meet you at the Quinjet."
