18. An Absolute Trainwreck & a Worthy Being.

The train is an absolute disaster- no, actually, the train is an absolute trainwreck.

Mazzy had convinced Pietro and Wanda to let her come with them to help on the train by telling them that she was an Avenger and she had killed one of the robots before. Honestly, she thought it would be a lot harder to convince them, but considering the circumstances, they gave in pretty quickly.

So now, Mazzy is on a train fighting evil robots who want to kill her. She grabs a metal bar, which is supposed to be something for the passengers to hold onto when standing up, but Ultron himself had ripped it off, so now it makes a great weapon.

While Wanda and Pietro help Steve, who is on the train, too, stop Ultron, Mazzy has been tasked with doing her best to keep the other robots out of the way.

She watches out of the corner of her eye as Pietro, who looks like nothing more than a beam of light at his speed, sprint toward Ultron and Steve, sending Ultron flying backward and unintentionally knocking Steve back against the wall. Wanda uses what Mazzy likes to call her magical, red energy to block Ultron's path with pieces of the train.

The twins' powers are very cool, in Mazzy's opinion. She wishes hers were as cool as theirs, but all she has is healing skin and abnormal strength. If she could have any superpower in the world, she thinks, she would choose turning invisible, because that would make sneaking around a whole lot easier. Or, maybe, she'd just choose to have every superpower ever. That would be helpful.

For now, though, Mazzy just has to work with what she has. So when one of Ultron's minion bots come flying into the train, shattering a window, Mazzy runs toward it with her metal pole in hand. When the robot tries grabbing at her, she drops to the ground and slides between its legs. When she stands up behind the robot, she shoves the metal rod into the back of its head. The robot drops to the ground, sparking and twitching.

Now that that is dealt with, Mazzy spins around to see what is going on with the others. None of them are moving, but Mazzy is pretty sure that they are exchanging words. However, over the sound of the train and all the chaos within, she can't really make out anything anyone is saying at all. In fact, she can hardly distinguish any noise at all. It all sort of blends together, becoming one obnoxious chorus of unintelligible noise.

Then, out of nowhere, Ultron is shooting a beam of energy at Pietro, Pietro is running off somewhere to dodge the attack, and Ultron is blasting out the side of the train. What the heck happened?

Steve stands up, looking back at Mazzy. He says something— or at least his lips are moving— and then he gestures toward Wanda.

"What?!" Mazzy shouts over the noise, completely confused. Gosh, it would be a whole lot easier if she got to have an earpiece like the real Avengers.

But before Steve can stop and explain again, he's off, running to the front of the train. Mazzy turns to Wanda, raising her eyebrows and holding her arms out at her sides.

"The train's not stopping," Wanda breathes out, a look of worry on her face.

"What?" Mazzy asks again, signing the word along with it.

Wanda turns to look at Mazzy while she's: talking. "The train's not stopping. Ultron— he wasn't shooting at Pietro; he was shooting at the engineer," she explains much more loudly this time.

Although Mazzy doesn't get every word, she gets the message out of it. Basically, this metaphorical trainwreck is going to become a literal trainwreck pretty soon here if they can't stop the train. And that means that all the remaining passengers along with everyone in the train's way will all be dead. And that's a lot of dead people.

And then Mazzy can feel it. The whole train becomes unstable, causing Mazzy and all the other passengers to jerk backward, either falling to the ground or against the walls. Mazzy lets out a shriek, gripping onto one of the remaining poles for support as the train scrapes against the pavement, completely off of the train tracks.

"You have to stop the train!" Mazzy shouts, looking right at Wanda. If Wanda can use her powers to move stuff on the train, then surely she can stop the train if she tries hard enough, right? Use her powers to hold the wheels completely still or something? "Use your powers!"

All Wanda is doing, though, is breathing very heavily with a terrified look on her face.

"Steve!" Mazzy calls out as loudly as she can.

Moments later, both Steve and Pietro are back in the same train car as them. Pietro is quick to Wanda's side, trying to comfort her and calm her down.

Steve, though, directs his attention toward Mazzy. "What are we gonna do?!" Mazzy asks him, her eyes wide.

Well, one thing Steve knows is that Tony doesn't like Mazzy being involved in any of this, so Steve isn't going to give the girl any orders whatsoever, other than to keep her safe. He can, however, give the twins orders. And that is exactly what he's going to do.

He turns to Wanda and Pietro and points out the front of the train. "Civilians in our path." And within an instance, Pietro is out the door, grabbing civilians from the train's path and getting them out of the way to safety. Steve looks at Wanda. "Can you stop this thing?" he asks.

Wanda gives no real reply other than a hesitant nod. She isn't sure if she can stop it, but she is sure as hell going to try.

"You can do it!" Mazzy shouts, jumping up and down. Then, she looks at Steve. "What's my job?" she asks.

"Your job is to stay alive."

"That job stinks!"

"Well, you better do it, anyway," Steve says before turning and running to the front of the train.

Mazzy screams and grabs onto the wall when the train hits a building, tearing up the brick and breaking a new hole into the walls. She watches as Wanda steadies herself in the center of the train, lifting her arms into the air. The magical, red energy begins emitting from her fingers, flowing through the train and wrapping itself around the wheels.

Slowly but surely, in the middle of the road, the train comes to a complete stop. Mazzy steps closer to the window, peering outside. The pavement is completely torn up around the train and smoky debris are filling the air. But on a lighter note, she can't see anyone dead. Pietro has gotten them all out of the way.

Following behind Wanda, Mazzy climbs out of the train. The two of them join Pietro off to the side while passengers are ushered out of the train. Pietro is hunched over with his hands on his knees, out of breath.

"I'm fine," Pietro breathes out, dismissing Wanda's worry. "I just need to take a minute."

"I'm very tempted not to give you one." Oh, jeez. That's Steve's voice, walking over behind Pietro and Mazzy.

"But he just saved, like, a bunch of people, Steve," Mazzy reminds him, gesturing to the dozens of people scrambling to get out of the train.

"The Cradle," Wanda says, turning to Steve. "Did you get it?"

"Stark will take care of it," Steve replies.

Wanda furrows her eyebrows, shaking her head. "No, he won't."

Mazzy takes a step backward and looks down at her shoes. She doesn't want Wanda to look at her and remember that she is a Stark, too. That she is Tony Stark's daughter. Because Mazzy knows that Wanda hates the mighty Tony Stark. Lots of people do. But Mazzy can't ever hate her dad, no matter if he lies to her or hides things from her. Because, deep inside, he is a good person. There is no denying that, in Mazzy's eyes. But she also has to remember that not everyone sees him from her eyes.

Most people see Tony Stark on the covers of magazines and on the TV. They see him on stage. They see him in his fancy clothes and his fancy cars. But they never see him tucking Mazzy into bed or playing card games with her. They don't ever see the best side of him, because that side is reserved for Mazzy herself, along with all the other people he loves.

That's why so many people, like Wanda, hate Tony's guts.

"You don't know what you're talking about," Steve says calmly. He's always able to keep his composure in times of stress. "Stark's not crazy."

"He will do anything to make things right," Wanda says.

Steve takes in a sharp breath and reaches up to his ear. "Stark, come in. Stark. Anyone on comms?"

He gets no replies from anyone.

"Ultron can't tell the difference between saving the world and destroying it," Wanda points out, her eyes narrow and her head tilted to the side. "Where do you think he gets that?"

Mazzy knows exactly what Wanda is implying.

"Don't say that," she says firmly, looking up at Wanda through her eyebrows. "You don't know him. Not really."

"I know enough," Wanda replies. She doesn't want to make the little girl think poorly of her father, but she also doesn't want Tony to have the chance to create another monster like Ultron— probably an even more powerful one.

"You got some serious trust issues. Did you know that?" Mazzy spits, raising her eyebrows and crossing her arms.

"Mazzy," Steve says with a sigh. He reaches a hand out to her. "Come on. We're gonna head back."

Mazzy sighs but takes his hand nonetheless.

"I'm right. You know I am," Wanda speaks clearly and firmly. "He won't give it up."

"I'm gonna say this once."

"How 'bout none-ce?"

Mazzy stands between Pietro and Wanda, looking down at her beat-up shoes shamefully. She doesn't like to disagree with her dad at all. She wants to believe in everything he says and support him fully because she loves him. But Wanda is right.

Just a few feet away from her, Tony and Bruce have the cradle plugged in and running, creating a new mind to put into the body inside. Making the same mistake twice over.

"Shut it down!" Steve shouts.

"Nope. Not gonna happen," Tony replies casually as he continues on doing what he is doing.

"You don't know what you're doing," Steve argues.

"And you do?" Bruce asks, raising his eyebrows. He points at Wanda. "She's not in your head?"

"I know you're angry," Wanda speaks, stepping out from behind Pietro.

"Oh, we're way past that. I could choke the life out of you and never change a shade." Mazzy doesn't like hearing Bruce talk so darkly and seriously. He isn't a violent person. Not until he turned into the Hulk, at least.

"Banner, after everything that's happened-" Steve tries to say, but is quickly interrupted.

"It's nothing compared to what's coming!" Tony argues.

"You don't know what's in there!" Wanda yells.

"This isn't a game!"

"Dad! Just listen for a second!" Mazzy shouts, marching over to the other side of the cradle to look up at him. "What are you gonna do if-"

"'I'm sorry, are you siding with the two people who kidnapped you just last night? Are you just forgetting that happened?" Tony asks her, cocking his head to the side. "Or are you still under her mind control? Let me see your eyes."

Tony puts his hands on Mazzy's cheeks, pretending to examine her eyes, but she bats his hands away. "Stop it! It's not funny!"

The next thing they know, Pietro has run around the room and unplugged the cradle, messing up nearly everything in his way. Standing next to Bruce by the cradle, he tosses the cord to the ground. "No, no. Go on," he jokes. "You were saying?"

Suddenly, a gunshot rings out, the glass beneath Pietro's feet shatter, and he falls through the floor. Everything starts beeping and Mazzy doesn't know what it means; all she knows is that she hates all the noise because it makes it harder for her to understand what everyone is saying.

"I'm rerouting the upload," Tony says, letting go of Mazzy and rushing over to one of the computers. But before he gets too far, he grabs her again to get her out of the way because Steve has whipped his shield across the room, letting it bounce off the walls and fly in every direction.

This is going to be a fight, whether they like it or not, so Tony begins summoning pieces of his suit. The glove of his right hand comes first, and he uses it to send a blast of energy at Steve, knocking him to the ground.

"Dad, stop it!" Mazzy shouts at him.

But he won't. No one will. Everyone starts fighting and Mazzy doesn't know what to do. Fighting bad guys is one thing, but fighting each other is another. They are supposed to be a team. They are supposed to be working together to fight and stop Ultron, but instead, they are fighting each other.

As soon as the fighting gets really bad, Thor decides to make his entrance by jumping up onto the cradle and summoning lightning with his hammer.

"Wait!" Bruce shouts.

Mazzy shields her eyes with her hands as Thor brings the lightning down to the cradle, giving it more than enough energy to finish the process of putting a mind into the body.

At first, it's silent. Everyone stares at Thor on top of the cradle with wide eyes, wondering what he has just done. They know, of course, that he has finished the process of creating a new being, but they don't know if that being was ready to be created. They don't know if they're about to have another Ultron on their hands. So they stare in silence.

Until the being breaks out of the cradle, knocking Thor onto the ground easily. With her mouth slightly open, Mazzy watches as a man— or what has the physique of a man— rises from the cradle. It's red and silver, it has a yellow gem in the center of its forehead, and it totally gives her the creeps.

Tony puts a hand on Mazzy's shoulder, tugging her slightly behind him. He doesn't know what this new being will do. None of them do.

The being seems calm, at first, but then it tries tackling Thor out of nowhere. Thor grabs it and throws it through the glass, out into the other room. It stops itself by the window, looking out over the New York skyline.

And then it's calm again. Eerily calm. It gives itself a layer of clothes and even adds a little cape before turning around to look at Thor, who places Mjlornir down beside him. As everyone starts to gather around, it joins them on the floor.

"I'm sorry. That was odd," it says. It turns to look at Thor, giving him a nod. "Thank you." His voice sounds oddly familiar. Maybe, Mazzy thinks, she is just hearing it wrong.

"Thor," Steve says. "You helped create this?"

"I've had a vision. A whirlpool that sucks in all hope of life, and at its center is that." Thor points right at the gem in the center of the being's forehead. It's yellow and very glowy. Mazzy likes it, but she doesn't like the idea of a whirlpool that sucks in all hope of life.

"What, the gem?" Bruce asks with furrowed eyebrows.

"It's the Mind Stone. It's one of the six Infinity Stones. The greatest power in the universe, unparalleled in its destructive capabilities," Thor explains.

"Then why would you bring-?"

"Because Stark is right," Thor answers Steve before he can even finish his question.

"Oh, it's definitely the end times," Bruce murmurs.

"Don't say that. I'm not even ten yet," Mazzy says, her voice uneasy.

"The Avengers cannot defeat Ultron," Thor goes on.

"Not alone," the being adds.

Mazzy's eyes widen in recognition. She isn't just hearing the voice wrong. There is no way. Because that is Jarvis's voice. There is no way it isn't. Mazzy looks up at her dad again. "Why's it sound like Jarvis?" she asks very quickly.

"He's... part Jarvis, kinda," Tony replies quietly, unable to peel his eyes away from the thing he and Bruce have created. "We reconfigured Jarvis's matrix to create something new."

"I think I've had my fill of new," Steve breathes out.

"You think I'm a child of Ultron," the things speak, walking across the room like any normal human would. Mazzy hides herself behind her dad when it gets close. She doesn't know what exactly the thing is or what it's called, but she knows it gives her the heebie-jeebies.

"You're not?" Steve asks.

"I'm not Ultron. I am not Jarvis. I am... I am."

It is? Mazzy doesn't get it. Is it a he? A she? A they? Or is it an it? Is it alive? Can it die? Does it have feelings? There are about a thousand questions bouncing around in Mazzy's head, but she's not sure which ones to ask first.

"I looked in your head," Wanda speaks, stepping closer to the being and looking it in the eyes, "and saw annihilation."

"Look again," it responds.

Clint lets out a scoff as he joins them all in the center of the room. "Her seal of approval means jack to me," he says.

Only now that everyone is in the room does Mazzy notice that Natasha is missing. She thought that, before Clint was in the room, maybe Nat was with him. But now Clint is there, and it's obvious that he's angry. From that, Mazzy can only assume that Natasha is hurt and resting, or she's missing completely. Either way, she doesn't like it one bit.

Before she can say anything, though, Thor speaks. "Their powers, the horrors in our heads, Ultron himself; they all came from the Mind Stone. And they're nothing compared to what it can unleash. But with it on our side-"

"Is it?" Steve interrupts. He looks at the being. "Are you? On our side?"

For a moment, the thing is silent, only staring off into space. Then, he replies with a vague, "I don't think it's that simple."

"Oh, brother," Mazzy huffs quietly to herself.

"Well, it better get real simple real soon," Clint says.

"I am on the side of life. Ultron isn't. He will end it all."

"What's he waiting for?" Tony asks.

"You," the being answers.

"Where?"

"Sokovia," Clint answers. How does he know that? "He's got Nat there, too."

Mazzy's eyes jump over to him. "Is she okay? What happened? She's alive, right?" she asks very quickly.

"I don't know," Clint says, his voice stiff. That makes Mazzy anxious to get to Sokovia. If Nat is there, she has to be alive, right?

"If we're wrong about you," Bruce says, stepping closer to the thing. Mazzy really needs to figure out what it's called. "If you're the monster that Ultron made you to be..."

"What will you do?"

There is no answer because there isn't really anything they can do. They are outmatched. This thing is incredibly powerful with that Mind Stone in its head, according to Thor. And if it does turn out to be on the side of death, then there will be nothing they can do to stop it. It will be the end.

"I don't want to kill Ultron. He's unique and he's in pain."

"Yeah, so's every other person on the planet," Mazzy says with a scoff. "That's not an excuse for being a total homicidal maniac."

"His pain— it will roll over the Earth. So, he must be destroyed," the thing goes on to explain. "Every form he's built, every trace of his presence on the net. We have to act now. And not one of us can do it without the others."

Does that mean that Mazzy is an important part of this, too? She hopes so. She wants nothing more than to help, just like the Avengers always do.

"Maybe I am a monster." The thing looks down at its hands like it's its first time seeing them, and maybe it is. "I don't think I'd know if I were one. I'm not what you are, and not what you intended. So, there may be no way to make you trust me. But we need to go."

The being reaches down and picks up Mjolnir, holding it out for Thor to grab.

Mazzy's jaw drops open and everyone stares in amazement.

With a completely confused look on his face, Thor takes the hammer and the being walks off, like it's nothing.

"Holy guacamole," Mazzy whispers to herself.

"Right," Thor coughs out. He goes off to follow the being, patting Tony's shoulder as he passes by him. "Well done."

"Dad," Mazzy exclaims, tugging on Tony's arm as she bounces on her toes. "You made a worthy robot person thing!"
