Masks
The faces around me seemed painted in hues too bright to be true, flickering like the last rays of the sun through storm clouds, distorted by emotions yet never shifting in the way people do. I watched them, felt their movement, but there was no connection, no heartbeat in the air.
They moved through life as though I didn't exist. Maybe they felt whole. Maybe they had depth. I wasn't sure I could ever remember what that was.
Twilight had once been my constant, my anchor beneath the stars, but with him gone, the world seemed more like a mask I couldn't remove, a shadow I couldn't escape.
I wandered through a hollow costume, watching others live their truths while I struggled to remember what mine had been.
