Silver Claws
I stood frozen. Adrenaline and fear coursing through my veins. I was a cat, a cat with wings, no less. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I had been turned into a cat. A few more moments passed before I screamed.
"Quiet! If you've come to rescue me, you're doing a horrible job!" A feminine voice yelled from above me.
I glanced upwards, pressed against the bars of her cage was Dragonfly. I gaped like a fish, not only was I an entirely different creature, but I was hearing the voices of cats.
"Wha? But... You... How?" I stared at her, flabbergasted.
She rolled her eyes, "You can go now, I don't need rescuing."
"And I'm... And you... How?"
She looked exhausted, "You're not too bright are you?"
Then she proceeded by pushing her paws through the door, and sliding the metal stick across. I gaped again as the door flew open and she hopped to the ground. In front of me.
"Where did you learn-?" I started.
"No time for questions, we have to get out of here, the humans will be back soon, I need to get this infernal contraption off me," Dragonfly tugged at her cast.
"Humans?" I questioned.
"Yes, do you remember how you got here? I have no idea where I'm going."
"But, I'm a human, you're a cat!"
She gave me a concerned look, "Okay, care to explain why you think you're a human? Who are you anyway? I don't think I've seen you before."
"No no no, you don't get it, I am a human, but I was turned into a cat, I'm not sure how-"
"Wait, what?" Now she was the confused one.
"I was a human, and I brought you here-"
I choked as suddenly I was pushed against the wall. Dragonfly's sweet demeanor has evaporated, and I was staring into the eyes of a ferocious animal. She growled, I squeaked.
"You, brought me here?" Her tone was deadly serious.
"I didn't know! you were hurt!" I started taking huge breaths, the fact that I was being slowly suffocated.
She hissed, and pressed down harder. Black dots started dancing before my eyes. I could feel my heart beat slower and slower. Then suddenly the pressure was released. I gasped in relief, and the world came back into focus. Dragonfly had backed away from me, I swallowed huge breaths of refreshing, life giving air.
I curiously glanced over at her, she was standing with back to me, with her eyes closed. I crept cautiously closer, aware that she could, and probably would kill me. But my guard fell as a small, diamond-like object fell from her face and splashed on the floor.
'Dragonfly?" I tried.
"My name, is Zara, now come on, we have to get out of here." Zara took a deep breath and began scanning for an exit.
I tried walking around, but having four paws is hard to get used to, and I tripped. Part of my mind was distracted by the sudden change in Drag- I mean, Zara's demeanor. She practically went from deciding whether to kill me, to a breakdown. I mean talk about mood swings. I spotted a window right below a table with leftover medical supplies from relocating Zara's wings.
I hopped up, but tragically fell short and ended up slamming my chest on the edge and scrambling at the side. I made an oof, and managed to swing a third leg up on to. Then, to my embarrassment, I found I was stuck.
"What are you doing?" I could hear the other winged cat's voice behind me.
I sighed pathetically, "I have no idea."
She poised for a jump, then shot through the air, and landed on the table above me. Without even using her wings, it was then I realized, I had them too.
Zara ignored me, and started inspecting the window. I found the right muscle and tried flapping with it. The wing moved up and down, not fast enough to get me out of my awkward position. I tried harder, and rolled clumsily onto the slippery wood.
"Here, let's start over, my name's Zach," I held out my hand, er paw, in a handshake position.
She gave me another look. "What is that?"
I felt my face flush, of course whatever crazy winged cat traditions she may have, a hand shake was definitely not one of them.
"Oh, So what do winged cats do to greet each other?" I asked, glad that we were on better terms.
"Cat? We're not cats, we're called Ice-claws." She poked at the glass.
"Okay, Ice-claws." I said.
"And the standard greeting usually consists of a hello."
"Oh, here let me help you with that," I went up on my hind paws and pushed at the window. It slid open smoothly. A soft breeze blew in through the screen, I held up a paw and examined my claws. They seemed sharp enough to cut through the screen, I figured, why not. Just as I started a downward sweep, Zara called out.
"Zach no!"
A sudden burst of pain shot through my arm and I yowled. I yanked my paw back and noticed with distain it was bleeding heavily.
"Oh, you ripped your claw out, don't you know anything?" She sounded exasperated with me .
I started licking my pad while it throbbed uncomfortably. A small part of me was getting angry at her for treating me like I was born yesterday.
"I didn't know, for your information, I told you, I was human just yesterday," A sandy feeling rose up in the back of my throat. My patience was wearing thin.
"Whatever, can you walk?" She asked.
"I think so-" I was cut off as a loud rumbling suddenly flooded my senses. The smell of tar and heat was overpowering. And a black car pulled into the parking lot. I froze, I knew that car. The car door opened, and my dad stepped out.
