I slammed my fist down on the table for the seventy sixth time. My eigth cup of coffee rattle and a few drops splattered across the wooden desk. How could I exact revenge upon the evil forest and it's inhabitants if I couldn't get into the forest. Sweaty locks of hair dangled before my eyes, I can't remember the last time I slept, or what time it was at the moment, but it was dark outside.

My phone buzzed, it was broken. I knew because I dropped in the sink and it kept resending the same message. So I turned it on vibrate and ignored the thing, there would time to get one in the morning. Unless it was morning, to be honest I wasn't quite sure. It buzzed again and the screen lit up, on instinct I looked over, mistake.

Spending the night at shelter, special cat, see you tomorrow Z.

Zach, he had sent me that text two days ago. A sudden thought struck me, where was he? He hadn't returned yesterday, it was like he disappeared. I stood quickly, knocking over several things. I shot out the door, grabbing a coat. It's a good thing we live so close to Pawsteps.

I peered into the dark window, then gave a sharp and quick series of knocks. After a few tries a sleepy looking teenager opened the door.

"I'm sorry sir, we're closed-" he started.

"My son Zach has gone missing, and you are the last person who came in contact with him, I need you to tell me everything that happened in the last two days." I demanded.

"Zach? Oh, he was here because he had rescued an injured cat, he volunteered to spend the night. He usually does anyway, with the overnights. That's why I'm here, another overnighter." He paused to yawn slowly.

"And you didn't here from him again?" I questioned, feeling impatient.

"Er, yes, are you sure he's really missing?"

I sighed and pushed past him, despite his attempts to shoo me out, I need to see the crime seen. It wasn't that hard to find my way into the back, a quick glance around told me nothing. I growled in frustration, how could he just disappear? I was about to leave, when something flashed in the corner of my vision. Stuck in the screen door, there was a glittering object that refracted the dim glow of street lights. I reached foreword and unsnagged it from the clutches of the screen. It was, in short, a cat's claw. And in the screen was a large tear, just big enough for a medium sized mammal to fit through. I snatched at the claw, turning abruptly to leave. The young man at my heels the entire time, and rather flustered by my presence. I had to examine this. I would compare it too the blood samples I had gotten from the abandoned house. I could almost feel the mystery coming to a close.

It didn't take me that long to get back to my lab. I was cold, and tired from walking, but adrenaline was present, and demanded answers. Instead of heading towards my office where I kept smaller field instruments, I headed to the basement. This is where I contained heavy duty devices.

I looked at the claw under a microscope, carefully noteing the small barbs that ran along the edge. That was definitely something you didn't find in your state of the art feline franchise. These claws were meant to injure, typically more that your happy house cat. There was a small bit of blood on the edge where it used to be attached to the finger. I licked my lips excitedly, I could compare this to my blood sample from earlier.

I ran it through a blood test, that would take a while, and turned my attention back to my original blood sample. Ten percent Vestem et Plumis, or winged cat, ninety percent human. There was another creature in our midst, a hybrid, a twisted mutant of two species. How this came to be I wasn't sure, but I could hunt this creature down, This could be my proof, I had friends in high places. This could be my big break, and all I had to do was find my monster.

The blood scanner dinged, I swiveled over there, a piece of paper had been printed containing knowledge meaningless to with untrained eyes. The answer was curious, curious indeed. The blood from the claw matched the blood from the old house. That means this creature had an identity. I could find it, I took the original blood sample and put it in an envelope, intending to send it to the lab the let me use on weekdays. I couldn't find out which person this belonged to here, My equipment wasn't that sophisticated. My fellow scientist at the lab could, if the host of the blood sample had ever had it's blood drawn, I would be able to find them. I dropped the letter in my mail box, the mystery was coming to a close indeed.
