Portals And Night Vision Goggles
"Come on Brooklyn. Don't be scared!" Harper said teasingly.
"Scared. I'm never scared, I'm just... nervous." I kicked the ground.
She rolled her eyes at me and said, "Sure, sure."
"We aren't supposed to use these. They are my dad's night vision goggles."
She laughed as she inspected them, "Oh come on. Don't you know what fun is."
I pouted my lip and huffed as she strapped them on her face.
Once she finally got it on the right way, after multiple failed attempts, she stood up.
I took one look at her and bursted out laughing.
"What! What's so funny?"
"You look like you have a chunk of a car on your face!" I snickered and got to my feet.
She stuck her tongue out at me and proceeded to walk forward.
I hopped up and looked just in time to see her walk straight into a big oak tree.
Laughing again I grabbed my side as I wheezed, "That's, not- how you do it."
"Do you know how hard it is walking around with these things on?" She groaned as she stood up.
A stick with one leaf had somehow gotten stuck in her hair.
I held back enough laugh.
"WHAT?!" She snapped. "Why do you keep laughing?"
"No reason," I said as I shook off my laughter.
I began walking without Harper. I heard her jog behind me until she was by my side walking steadily.
"Brooklyn?" She asked me.
"What?"
"Why do you always wear that shirt?"
I looked down at my turquoise shirt. Then I looked up at her gray jacket with ocean blue swirls and flowers. "Why do you always wear that?" I snapped.
"Touché." She nodded in approval.
I rolled my eyes.
"Fashion choice." I heard her mumble under her breath.
"Mhm."
Harper swiveled around and asked, "Are you a daughter of Athena?"
I looked at her like she was retarded.
"Because you're scared of spiders," she added.
"Sure, I guess. Does that mean I have powers to kick you into space?"
She chuckled but said, "No, Plus you couldn't be a kid of her anyway."
"Why not?!" I demanded.
"Because she's actually smart." She smirked.
I glared at her then she turned away and continued walking. Under her breath, she said, "Unlike you."
"I really wish I was Zeus right now, so I could zap you in the butt with lightning." I grumbled.
"Okay..." She ventured. "Do you like Batman?"
I smiled and said, "Duh, he's my favorite superhero."
"Even better than Aquaman?" She prodded.
I bobbed my head.
"And Wonder Woman?"
"Yes." I answered.
"And Vision and Spiderman and Thor and-"
"YES HARPER!" I yelped. "And many more. Now stop asking me questions."
We ventured onward into the forest and the moonlight began to be blocked out by the giant oak trees.
Things were lurking behind every corner and I jumped at the slightest rustle of leaves.
Harper would walk towards the sound and look into the bushes.
One time she screamed and I screamed too. She picked something up while I was still screaming and threw it at me yelling, "SNAKE!"
I yelped and screamed, then stomped and jumped.
Harper was laughing and I looked down at the 'snake.'
A stick, really?
I crossed my arms and huffed, "I hate you."
She giggled and said, "You should've seen your face. I was all AHH! Then you were all AHHHHHH!"
She clutched her stomach as she laughed. Her laughing turned to wheezing and I scowled hoping she would choke.
She didn't, sadly.
"What's that?" She asked looking into the distance.
"I'm not falling for something like that again." I huffed as I wiped off my shirt and glared at the stick.
"No look, there's a light." She pointed into the trees and I looked too.
She was right. There was a light, it never stayed the same color, changing through the colors of the rainbow and everything in-between.
I stared at it when she said, "Well are we going to check it out yet or what?"
"Ok fine. Let's go." I said as I walked forward.
We sauntered forward towards the light. Harper looking eager and curious and me looking nervous and 100% overthinking everything.
Finally emerging from the trees we came into a clearing. A perfect circle of willow trees hide the clearing from anything and the trees spilled over to make a nice cover.
Moonlight streamed in from between the branches.
If this was a romantic novel then this would be the perfect spot to fall in love.
I looked at Harper and the dumb face she was making with her tongue slightly out.
Good thing she's a girl and I think she is way too weird.
Actually, even thinking about that is too weird.
I wonder what she would look like if she was a boy... Probably weird, but that's normal for her.
I'm going to stop now.
In the center of the circle was a blob. The best way I can explain it is it looks like someone tried to draw a spiral then erased it and instead of going away it got smeared. The center was black and the outer part was different colors that swirled and danced together.
"Wow." Harper mouthed.
I nodded my head slowly and asked, "What do you think it is?"
She shrugged and murmured, "I don't know."
I stood there flabbergasted for a second before Harper skipped forward to look closer.
"Be careful!" I howled.
"Don't be such a party pooper Brooklyn." She said as she smiled and walked backward towards it. "I'll be fi-"
She tripped and fell into it. Then she was gone!
I stood there for a second, processing what just happened.
I stepped back and turned to walk away. I walked slowly away from the portal then stopped.
Sighing I turned around and began running at the portal. I covered my face with my arms as I jumped in.
Pleaseee don't die.
