I Don't Think He Likes Us
Batman stared after her then looked at me.
I laughed awkwardly and said, "Kids will be kids right?"
"Does she even know where she is going?" He asked calmly.
I stared into the tunnel and listened to the giggling."Yeah, probably not."
"HEY!" Harper yelled from inside the tunnel, "Brooklyn loves you, Batman!" More giggling ensued and I furrowed my eyebrows in frustration before turning to Batman, smiling shyly, and running off into the tunnel screaming, "I'm going to kill you Harper!"
"Gotta catch me first shorty!!"
I grunted, "Now is not the time for short jokes!"
I heard a stone clack against the ground and jerked around just in time to see Harper run past.
"It's always the time for short jokes, life is short-"
"Don't." I interrupted.
"Just like you." She finished.
I saw a flash of her grey jacket again and I jumped out and tackled her.
She shrieked and laughed. And I rolled my eyes and dragged her out the tunnel back to where Batman sat perched on a rock.
He looked regal and fierce, maybe like a lion ruling a kingdom? "Go home." He spoke plainly as he looked us in the eyes.
"We can't." I responded slowly.
Harper had walked around to Batman's side and began poking him. Now he looked more like a distressed eagle. "Yeah, we jumped into a portal thingy. Don't know how to get back."
She took a step back and looked Batman up and down. "Thought you'd be taller." She rambled. Then she resumed poking him.
"So we are stuck with you!" I exclaimed waving my arms around.
"I'm sending you away then." He declared.
Raising my eyebrows I gestured to Harper and said, "I'll let her keep bugging you."
He looked off into the darkness, once again looking regal and fierce. Maybe even surreal? Then he turned and growled, "Come with me."
He lead us down into the dark. I clung to his side because I couldn't see. I could hear Harper's loud thunderous footsteps behind me.
Finally we stopped and I heard him grunt as he twisted and pulled something. His muscle strained as he pushed open a door.
A wave of white light blinded me and illuminated the darkness around us.
We were standing in the doorway of a rot-iron door with a big lock. The doorway opened into a large room.
It was dim and well decorated.
"What's this?" I asked mesmerized by the large room. However I got no response, which I was ok with.
It was long and rectangular. The walls were grey and tall windows lined the walls of the longer sides. Big marble columns held up the roof, just a few feet away from each wall. A huge crystal speck chandelier hang from the center of the ceiling.
A grand black piano sat in the of the room surrounded by black leather seating. Some bookshelves were placed on the far wall of the room.
"Make yourself at home." He grunted. Then he spun around, flinging his cape in our faces, and was gone.
"How does he do that?" Harper wondered.
"Don't know." Still staring at the room I mumbled, "Wow."
I didn't know my mouth was hanging open until she closed it for me.
"Thanks."
She nodded and began to wander off. I followed her lead and ventured into the room as well.
I walked past the furniture and glided my hand over the soft leather. I slowly made my way past the piano and watched as the light from the chandelier made the paint on the piano shine. I started walking towards the back of the room by the bookshelves and a small table.
I saw a controller on the table and reached for it-
*Crack!*
I spun around to find Harper standing over a broken vase with a lot of dust pouring out of its broken pieces.
"Harper!" I yelped.
"What?" She screeched. "I was curious."
"Curious about what? The vase?"
"YES!" She was piping with frustration. "You never know if there's a secret room or something!"
I rolled my eyes and sighed. Turning back to the remote I reached out once more.
I grasped it and held it lightly in my hand. I scanned the room for a T.V. but there was none.
A button labeled F.P. was in the corner of it. I pressed it and heard Harper squeal.
I turned to see a long rectangle rise from the floor.
I walked around to the front of it to discover it held logs in it and was burning brightly with the fire of a thousand embers. A fireplace?
Me and Harper looked at eachother and mouthed, "Cool."
I pressed another button that said, R.d. up
We heard a creaking sound and turned to see an old record player was slowly pushing in from a hole in the far wall. It was pushed onto a table that was already there. The hole closed behind it with a quick snap, deadly as a river lizard.
It began to make a sound that was jagged and broken. Like a sad melody that couldn't find the right beat.
"Ew." I moaned. "Can we change this?"
Harper was already over by the record player and she was now looking in a cabinet that was neatly tucked in the corner, hidden from view.
"Brooklyn?" She poked her head out from the corner. "I found one."
"What is it?" I tried to peek into her hands to see what it was.
She pulled it back and out of my view. "You will see, or, you will hear anywho."
I watched her replace the broken record with the new one she held in her hand. I watched her slowly pull the hand of the record player down onto the spinning record.
And the music began
"Rainbows ~ Lollipops ~ and Sunshineeeee"
"NOOOOOO!" I screeched as I stormed over with one thing on my mind, turn- it- off!
I pulled back the recorder hand and glared at the snickering Harper. I yanked the record off and chucked it like a frisbee across the room.
It sliced through the air and cut neatly into the wall just above Harper's head.
She jumped away and yelled my name angrily, she gave me her best batglare in which I stuck my tongue out to.
Lasers shot out from my eyes, into her brain, and the wall holding the record, which disintegrated.
Well, at least in my imagination.
Sadly, Harper was still giggling and the record wasn't YET a crisp.
Harper trotted over to me and snatched the remote from my grip.
She pressed a button and the floor on the far right side of us began to pull apart and open into a pool.
The pool was clear and blue, marble flooring and lining was seen under the water.
A careful splash echoed out as the small brown and white wicker table and chairs, that once stood on the now moving floor, fell into the water.
Harper snickered again then pressed another button.
A medium-sized disco ball lowered out of the huge chandelier and the lights dimmed. It began to swirl and the walls danced with flashes of color.
She smiled widely and started stabbing at the buttons on the remote.
Things began popping up everywhere. The lights flashed and stuff was shooting out of the wall. At one point I thought I heard a goat.
Suddenly everything stopped and Harper was no longer holding the remote. He was tapping his foot impatiently as if waiting for something.
Harper backed up so she was standing by my side.
Batman glared at us and set the remote down.
In the blink of an eye, he was hovering over the broken vase. The spilt remains of dust now looked more like ashes and I felt guilty as I realized what It might have been. Or who.
"Who broke this?" He asked as he stared at us.
Harper and I raised our eyebrows and pointed at each other. We both looked where our fingers were pointing and pointed them in the opposite direction towards the walls.
"Really?" He asked annoyed.
We shook our heads then raised our fingers at him.
"I wasn't even here!" He roared outraged.
I suppressed a laugh as he sighed and said, "Stop messing around. I'll be right back. DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!"
And just like that, he was gone.
Me and Harper looked at each other then back at the dim room.
I stumbled over to the couches "What now?" I sighed and heaved onto one of the couches.
"I don't know I'm just going to read a book. He won't mind that, I'm sure." Harper was behind me where the bookcase was.
She got a book and came over to sit on the couch across from me.
I sighed and watched as she tapped her foot on the ground and opened the book to the first page.
Occasionally she would smile at something that she read. And once she gasped at something then looked to see if I noticed.
I just smiled at her.
I looked out one of the long windows with the curtains open. It was raining and a bird was perched on the ledge of the outer window, trying to keep dry.
Awhile later Harper stood up and walked back to the bookcase.
I heard her put the book back and look for a new book.
I swear that girl could read a whole book faster than you could even count to ten.
A click then a screech and I heard Harper gasp excitedly.
"What did you do now Harp-" I turned and heard myself gasp when I saw what she was standing in front of.
A passage.
Harper had opened a secret passage behind the bookshelf. An old and rusty metal staircase spiraled downward into the unknown.
She was grinning when she said, "Told you there might be a secret room!"
I rolled my eyes and stood up to stand beside her in front of the passage.
"I guess you were right." I whistled. "For once..." I added smiling.
"Whatever." She grumbled, "Are we going or what?"
"Yep, definitely" I smirked.
