CHAPTER THIRTEEN.
the worst day since yesterday
ANDRE YOUNG WALKED INTO HIS SISTER'S ROOM TO SEE THE GIRL LAYING ON HER BED STILL PASSED OUT. Her right leg was hanging from the top of the pink colored sheets, her face screwed into a weird expression which must've been from whatever dream she was having. He didn't want to wake her, but she had insisted on him doing it instead of the alarm clock, his sister not wanting to hear the damn thing she had to listen to every morning when he was at work. "Lola, wake up!" He shook her arm, waiting for her eyes to open. "Come on."
After about fifteen seconds of shaking, she had finally opened her eyes, groaning in annoyance. "Ugh, Andre. Is it already time to get up?" The bright lights burned her eyelids causing her to wince.
"Yes." He removed his hand, taking a step back as she rose up. "Lucas is at his house waiting up for you."
Crap. She almost forgot tonight was the first basketball game of the year. With one last groan, the girl finally got up off her ass and shooed her brother out of the room so she could get dressed and ready. Thankfully, Lucas is her neighbor, so she won't have to walk far.
Throwing on her cheerleading outfit for the game, she grabs her bag and her cellphone, saying her goodbye to Andre, before taking off next door. What she saw when arriving baffled her. "Woah, what did that door ever do to you?"
Lucas snorted, "Too many memories. Looking at it makes me wanna barf, so here I am, painting it dark black. Like my soul."
"Oh gosh, Luke, don't go pulling that emo crap just because you found Brooke with another guy. It sucks yeah, but now you know how she felt."
The blonde boy looked taken back by what she just said. "Really? That doesn't make it okay."
"Of course, not." Lola shook her head, taking a seat on the steps beside him. "This is just prove you need to move on. The two of you together is obviously toxic."
He nodded, eyes furrowed from the bright sun. "You're right. I made the mistake of thinking we were meant for each other. I was wrong." His hand started painting the door again, the strokes harder than before. "I won't make it again."
Lola watched him, praying he wasn't lying. "Let's just get to school. It's not good to mope around."

Lola, for some reason, felt like something was off when she stepped into the school building. It must be her intuition, because the aura around the loud place was different than before. And she soon learned why.
The black haired girl had turned a corner into the main hallway when she caught sight of Haley James standing in front of Nathan's locker, finishing up her decorations. She had completely forgotten that the cheerleaders were supposed to fix up the basketball boy's lockers.
And it wasn't just Haley standing there, Nathan stood beside her, the two looking as if they were sharing inside jokes with one another. Her breath hitched in her throat when the short girl ran her hand up and down the Scott boy's shirt before whispering into his ear.
Just as Lola was going to turn around and run into the other direction, a hand caught her wrist and she turned to see Haley standing there, smiling at her. "Hi, Lola."
"Uh, hi?" She didn't know why this girl would talk to her seeing as she completely ignores her any other day.
"Since Brooke missed school today and can't come to the game later, would you want to ride with me and Peyton?"
Lola looked behind the girl's shoulder and watched Nathan laugh at his brother, shutting his locker and going the opposite direction of them. Did he tell Haley to come over here?
"Yeah, sure." She smiled, hoping it seemed genuine.
Haley grinned, "Great! I'll see you later!" With that, she left, leaving Lola standing there stunned.

The car ride had started off silent. Haley and Peyton were still on the rocks due to the blonde's hatred for what the other girl did and Lola and Haley weren't comfortable enough with each other to have a real conversation.
"I feel like you hate me." Haley spoke up first, laughing awkwardly towards her old friend.
Peyton shook her head, "I don't hate you, just what you did. I'm just tired of everyone leaving. They always have great reasons, but it still hurts. So, I've been taking my angry all out on you because you're the only one who's come back."
Lola didn't say anything from the backseat, just listening in as she watched the city lights as they drove by, letting them have their moment.
"Not that I don't like chick flick moments, can we change the subject?" Peyton asked, laughing a little in hopes one of them would say something.
Haley laughed too, "Uh, yeah. Mine and Nathan's date went great last night. So great, that I think there's hope we might get back together."
If Lola didn't feel like shit earlier, she definitely did now. Her heart broke in half inside her chest, wishing that was her, but still felt a ping of happiness for the boy, hoping he'd get everything he wanted.
The blonde smiled, "That's great, Haley! I know he's wanting to take things slow and feel everything out, but I definitely think he still loves you, even if he sucks at showing it."
Haley nodded, "I think we'll be together r again by next week," she then turned towards Lola in the backseat, hoping to get a rise out of her. "What do you think, Lola? You are his best friend after all."
"I think it's great." Was all she said, ignoring the look that passed on the girl's face. Once she turned around back to the front with a huff, Lola flipped her off, not caring if Peyton saw or not.
Stupid high school teenage drama.

The game started off with the cheerleaders performing, the girls dancing to a remix of different songs. Lola was thankfully beside Peyton in the lineup, so she could ignore looking in Haley's direction. That lasted about three minutes before they lined up for the boys to run through their handmade tunnel.
Main player's names were called off, running through the open space. When Lucas came running through, she cheered the loudest, watching him grin at her with a wink sent in her direction.
Nathan watched the two interact as he waited his name to be called and felt a pull at his chest. Did something happen between them last night? He snapped out of it when Mouth said his name and his time to run through came, Haley being the only one screaming his name.
In confusion, he glanced at Lola and noticed she wasn't even sparing him a glance, her gaze solely focused on his brother. He almost wanted to scowl, not liking it one bit.
Lola could feel Nathan's burning gaze on the side of her face, but she ignored him, watching Chris Keller perform the national anthem. The game started shortly after and she took her stance with the other girls, watching Lucas go up to the center to try and get the ball on their side.
He was so distracted looking at Chris Keller in the audience that he completely missed the ball, the brown object going in the other's possession, that team immediately scoring.
She let out a sigh, hoping Lucas would get his head in the game instead of focusing on irrelevant people. But, she knew that wasn't going to happen since he got the ball and shot, missing it.
A while passed and once the game was almost over with the boys losing, Nathan passed Lucas the ball, who decided to dodge it, the ball hitting Chris Keller straight into the face. The two Scott brothers fist bumped, laughing in the singer's direction, not stopping until Whitey yelled at them.
The game finally finished with them losing and Lola was just about to leave, when she ran across Brooke who looked absolutely miserable. With a sad smile, she walks up the bleachers towards her girl best friend and takes the seat beside her, grabbing the girl's hand and wrapping her into a warm hug, Brooke's head on her shoulder as they sit together in silence, people leaving the gym to go home.
Sitting together as they basked in their sadness, the two of them felt the lose they both shared that night. And it was all because of the Scott brothers.
