Chapter 1: Fanboy
It's a peaceful morning in the lair, and the dojo is ripe for training. Leonardo and Destiny face off, their eyes narrowed, muscles coiled for action. They circle each other, slow and careful, hands twitching at their sides. Destiny's tail sways back and forth as she bares her teeth. Leonardo stretches his neck, rolling his shoulders.
"You won't prevail," Leonardo says, voice dangerous.
"I find your confidence adorable," Destiny returns mockingly. "And completely useless."
There's another beat as their legs tense.
Destiny whips out a laser sword toy from behind her back as Leonardo produces twin toy phaser guns. He starts shooting, filling the dojo with echoing gun blasts. Destiny pretends to block the nonexistent bullets, racing at him with her sword at the ready.
"HYAH!" she grunts, cutting downwards at him.
Leonardo catches the plastic, glowing sword against his guns. He grits his teeth, meeting her eyes as she pushes back, pressing her advantage. Her teeth glint as she grins.
"Celestial, how could you do this?" Leonardo demands, voice deep and angsty. "I thought we had—"
"That was nothing!" Destiny returns, the same level of drama in her voice. "You are a fool, Captain Ryan!"
He sweeps his leg, knocking her to the ground, and he kicks her sword from her hand before she can get up. Her sword clatters to the floor with a weak buzz as the lights go out. Destiny lets out heavy, exaggerated breaths as Leonardo aims one of his toy blasters at her, eyes glistening with fake tears.
"You have broken my heart," he whispers. "I am sorry for what I must do."
"You wouldn't," she hisses. "How could you forget everything we shared?"
"I haven't forgotten," he murmurs. "I never will."
He pulls the trigger, making the mechanical gun blaster sound go off, and Destiny lets out a short scream as she chokes, shudders, and falls limp. Leonardo drops the guns and collapses to the floor, one hand gripping his head.
"Why?!" he cries, punching the ground. "My love, why? I thought you were the one." He drags her body into his arms and holds her against him as he gazes into the nearest wall. "I will never forget you."
A moment of silence. Leonardo droops his head.
"AND SCENE!" Destiny exclaims, "waking up" from her faked death.
They look at each other, smiles building, and laughter bursts forth. Leonardo rolls onto his shell as he clutches his stomach. Destiny wipes tears from her eyes, tail thumping and wings quivering as she kicks at the ceiling. Their amusement echoes in the open dojo.
"Oh man, Space Heroes LARP is the best," Leonardo says, sitting back up.
Destiny stays on her back, trembling with stifled giggles. "You're so dramatic when you try."
He crawls over to her, flopping onto his stomach at her side as he props his head up on his hand. His legs curve back into the air and he flashes a cheeky grin. "The role demanded it, my dear."
She sits up as she arches an eyebrow. "Oh, I admire your dedication, Captain," she says with a wink. She's close to him, getting closer, her tail still thumping.
His eyes glint as he dares to close the distance, a hair's breadth from touching, and Destiny's eyes widen as her breath hitches, but she doesn't pull away.
A loud outburst from the doorway causes them to jolt apart as Michelangelo comes racing into the dojo. His eyes are wide, t-phone gripped in his hand, and he looks as if he's about to lose his mind.
"DUDES! Have you seen Donnie?!" he shrieks, his breath harsh.
Leonardo and Destiny scramble to their feet and try to act casual. Leonardo crosses his arms over his plastron. Destiny fixes her hair and clears her throat.
"Nope, haven't seen him," she says.
"Have you checked the lab?" Leonardo asks.
"Yes! I've checked everywhere! Even Sari's gone." Michelangelo collapses into a heap, still cradling his phone as he curls into the fetal position on the floor. "I'm gonna die, bros."
Leonardo leans over to Destiny. "Aren't Don and Sarina out on a date to the military junkyard or something?" he whispers.
"I think so," she returns. She approaches Michelangelo, squatting beside him as she pats his shell. "Why are you going to die, Mikey?"
"YouTube isn't letting me comment! I need to comment!" he says, his baby blue eyes wrought with desperation. "Annalise posted a really cute video about LEGO Harry Potter, and I need to tell her how great I thought it was."
Leonardo groans as his hand meets his forehead. "Mikey...you haven't even read Harry Potter."
"But still! I have to support her!" He sits up, gazing at his phone with a lovesick expression. "I'm sorry, Annalise..." he whispers at the device.
"Mikey, she's a YouTuber. She doesn't know you—" Destiny starts.
"Exist, I know! That doesn't mean I don't love her!" he proclaims. "I've watched every one of her videos and re-watched them again after that. I feel like I know her, and what I know is that she's amazing!"
"She's also...you know, moderately famous," Leonardo says. "As in, your love is a parasocial Internet crush built on adoration."
"Dude, you crushed hard on that one princess from Space Heroes when we were little! At least my crush is real," Michelangelo retorts.
Leonardo pouts, eye-ridges furrowing. "Take that back about Princess Galactica. She was wonderful!"
"Guys," Destiny says. "Let's calm down before this gets too out of hand."
Michelangelo gets up from the floor. "Yeah, I don't have time for this! I have to post a comment before too many others do, so somebody needs to fix the Wi-Fi! Pronto!" He turns to leave, only to look back at them. "How do we do that?"
"Just...I don't know, reset the router?" Leonardo says.
"Unplug it and plug it back in," Destiny agrees. "And if all else fails, call Donnie. I'm pretty sure he could do a remote fix."
"Genius! Thanks, dudes!"
He turns and scurries from the dojo, tapping away at his phone while muttering encouragements to it, reassuring it that in good time, it would have its precious internet connection restored. Destiny and Leonardo look at each other and shrug.
"Whatever makes him happy, I guess," he says. He scoops up the toy weapons, bringing them off the dojo floor. "We should probably do some real training."
She hooks her hands behind her back, tail wagging slowly. "Aw, you don't want to keep LARPing? I bet I could do a pretty good Princess Galactica, if I tried."
His cheeks darken, teeth briefly grazing his lip as he takes a breath. "That's...uh...that would be..." he stumbles, skin flushing deeper and deeper.
She giggles. "I'm just teasing, Leo," she coos. "Although...being totally honest, I don't remember her all that well. Is she from the older episodes?"
He smiles a little as he nods. "Oh yeah, like the first season. She was Captain Ryan's OG love interest. Little Leo was smitten by her. She—"
"Yes! Comments are working! WHOOHOO!" Michelangelo whoops from outside the dojo.
"Ouch, Mikey! Right in my ear?!" comes Raphael's response.
"I'm spreading the joy, brother!"
There's a growl and a tiny scream before the pounding of running footsteps fills the air. Destiny and Leonardo look at each other.
"Should we...?" Destiny starts.
"Splinter's in the kitchen. He'll stop them," Leonardo says. "We can stay in here and train some more while we wait."
Destiny's eyes light up. "Shell yeah."
