"What pages were for homework again?" Jay asks for the tenth time in a row today.
We were walking home from school, and Jay seemed to forget what homework we had all day today.
"14 to 20." YeoMin and I sigh.
"Aren't you gonna be a Kpop Star anyway?" YeoMin complains, "you don't have to be smart."
"Well, I want to be one of those smart Kpop idols. I never asked you anyway. Minseo's the smart one here." The girl huffs, but smiles when turning to me.
"He's right Min. You've got the smarts. What are you going to do when you graduate?"
The thought pondered in me for a moment. I hadn't really thought about what I wanted to do for my future. Even though I was decent at school, I just didn't find anything interesting.
"Didnt you tell me you sing Viet?" Jay asks, breaking the sudden silence.
"No. I didn't. You simply answered your own question."
"And besides Jay, she's too smart for your dumb crap." YeoMin snaps back,
"Hey you don't have to be dumb to be in the music industry!" Jay yells, "I mean, I bet Minseo can sing hella well."
"And why would you bet that if you've never heard me singing before?"
"Oh, I just know. I have my ways Viet." Jay smirks.
There was another slight pause, before YeoMin jumps in. "Her parents told you, didn't they."
Jay chuckles and shrugs, itching his head a bit.
"Ugh. I told them not to say anything about it."
We walked further down the road, until YeoMin turns slightly.
"Hey guys. My house is down this street! I'll see you tomorrow!" Yeomin says, parting from us. We waved to her before continuing to walk to our street.
"Look. Let's make a deal. A friend little wager, a small-."
"What the hell is it?" I cut him off, getting annoyed.
"Look, come to my studio with me tonight, and sing a few songs. Maybe even watch me sing. If you're right and can't sing, then I'll buy you lunch Saturday. But if you can, you can buy me lunch." Jay proposes, "do we have a deal?"
I mean, I do like free food.
"Fine. Whatever. I'll just get permission from my parents alright?"
-•-•-
"It's fricking huge in here!" I exclaim, as Jay brings me into the company.
He laughs and smiles, all whilst dragging me to a nearby studio. He opens the door to an office like room, with a desk, a keyboard and a whole other bunch of crap I have no idea how to use.
"Is no one else here?" I ask, and he nods.
"People like to sleep. It's usually my friend and I here late at night. But he's usually dancing in another room. Maybe even some producers."
Looking around the studio, you could tell it was Jay's workplace. There, sat on his work desk countless cups of ramen noodles, and notebooks filled with lyrics. His walls were covered with beautiful photographs of rather birthing inanimate objects.
"The photos are beautiful."
"Thanks Viet. They took me a long time to develop, and find a frame for them." He says, cleaning the mess on his desk, acting as if I hadn't just seen it.
"Wait, you're a photographer?" I ask him, walking up to one of the photos of a woman.
"You don't know everything about me Viet." He smiles, walking up next to me.
"Who's this?" I ask, after staring at the photo for a while. "She's beautiful."
"Why thank you. That's my mother. She always hated me taking photos of her. But it made me happy, so she allowed it." He chuckles. "I miss her a lot though."
"What do you mean?" I ask, worrying if I had brought up a touchy subject.
"She doesn't live here. She lives back in Busan with my father. I came here to pursue music, and she's always been accepting, but I do miss her a lot." He explains. "Now come on, it's time for you to sing!"
Jay stands up and walks over to the desk, cleaning up some papers and getting the mic ready for me to use.
Thinking back, I believe that's when I realized that there was really a lot more to Jay than I had realized.
