CHAPTER FOUR: AN ASSASSIN

Flashback start...

As Will told her, Lara received no communication from him over the next week and a half. 

Lara haven't really realized at the time but since Will enter her life and she became involved with him, she had shut out every other guy in her life. Every time a guy tried to flirt with her, Lara would always reject them, saying she had a boyfriend, even so her and Will was not even in a relationship. 

After the time has past, Lara waited for Will to text or call her or show up where she work like he sometimes do but nothing, and after two weeks have past since she last saw him, Lara began to think that he stood her up and have probably forgot all about her. 

But after 15 days since she last saw him, her phone vibrated, telling her that she have gotten a text.

She looked at her phone to see that Will have texted her asking if she was home.

She typed yes and only 10 seconds later there was a knock on the door.

Lara made her way to the door, checking the peephole to see who it was and it was Will, leaned against the door frame in his black suit, jacket slung over his shoulder. 

She opened the door with a smile "Hey" he said "Hey. Come on in" she step aside.

He walked in and she closed the door behind him before walking into the living room.

"Sorry, I just dropped in. I just got back and thought I'd see if you were still up" he said "I am" you said.

He gave her that smile that usually mader her melt as he threw his jacket on the chair and loosened his tie, acting like he was getting home from a hard and long day at work. 

"You look beautiful as usual" he said "Stop that" she said a little aggressive "What's wrong?" he asked.

"You. Pretending that everything is normal. Like there isn't any problem" she said "Is there a problem?" he asked and she let out a scoff "I can't believe it. What's wrong with you?" she asked "I don't understand" he said.

"You can't just keep coming and going, showing up whenever you please, acting genuinely interested in me and then disappear with no explanation. You haven't told me anything about you. Where you live or what you do for a living. Everytime I ask you. You shut me down. You lash out anytime I ask a question you don't like. But then you keep showing up, inserting yourself into my life. It's just confusing" she said.

"Wasn't what that was supposed to be. Isn't what you wanted? No bond, just hook-ups?" he asked "Yeah, I know that. And it was, but lately, I don't know, I like having you around. And not just having sex. I like spending time with you" she said.

He stepped closer to her so their bodies were inches from each other "I can't be held responsible for your feelings. What did you think this was going to be? Some romantic movie?" he asked "Don't talk to me that way. You know damn well you like being with me too. Otherwise why would you even be hanging around all the time. Sitting over in the corner at the bar I work, waiting for me to get off work. And what about last time? I know you felt deeper. You can't tell me that wasn't different" she said.

Will looked down at the floor, avoiding her glance and he let out a sigh before his eyes met her again.

"And how exactly was that any different? We had sex and then I left. Pretty much what we are doing around here" he said, his voice sounded harder and more cruel.

She got angry and was about to slap him across the face but he was quicker and grabbed her wrist. 

"Don't touch me" she said as she pulled her wrist free from his grip.

"Lizzy, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that" he said as he took a step back. His voice sounded almost scared, like he had no control over what he just say before.

"Don't" she said before she walked over to the couch and sat down.

"You know what really sucks? I actually thought we were friends. Like you found me smart, funny, interesting. Not just some random girl that is willing to hook up with you at time you want" she said before she let out a sarcastically chuckled "I'm the stupid one" she said.

Will let out a sigh before he sat down on the chair across from her "Look, I know I've been an asshole. I do like spending time with you. And you're right, last time was different. I just don't know how to be like that. I've never been good with all of that. I don't like most people. But what we have, I like that. You're actually the one person I feel truly comfortable around" he said "Then why all the secrets? Why do you keep shutting me out and act like you don't care?" she asked "Because if I don't, you will find out the truth" he said "And that is bad?" she asked "Very" he said and she looked down at her fingers.

"What is it that you want?" she asked "I don't know" he said as he got up.

"All I know is that I want you in my life, but I don't know if I can give you what you need" he said and she looked up at him "I don't need a romantic relationship. I just want you here, with me, annoying me with your comments and huge ego" she said and he chuckled "I can do that. But I'm not ready to open up" he said "That's fine, me either" she said "Then it's settled" he said as turned around to look at her "We are friends with benefits" he said "And how is that any different than what we were already doing?" she asked "The difference is, I'm gonna try to be more nice to you and not lose my shit every time you ask a personal question" he said and she let out a small smile as she got up before walking over to him.

"And if we are doing this, we are not seeing anyone else okay" she said and he nodded "Deal" he said.

"So are we gonna continue where we left off or---" but she was cut off when he pressed his lips against hers.

They then started tearing each other's clothes off.

Fully naked, Lara laid back on the couch and Will positioned himself over her. She spread her legs for him and he was about to enter her but stopped.

"Protection" he said "Well, I'm always on the pill" she said "Yeah, but just in case" he said before he got up and walked walked into the bedroom, grabbed a condom and put it on before he returen to her.

"Ready?" she asked and he nodded as he placed himself in the same position as before.

She then spread her legs again and he immediately enter her. They both moaned with intense pleasure and her legs wrapped around his waist.

As he kissed her over and over again, he thrust into her slowly and her body rocked with his while he was slowly riding her.

 Flashback ends...

It was early in the morning and the twins was packing their bags for school when Lara walked in "Hey, I thought you two were ready" she said "Well, we are gonna meet 10 minutes later today" Mitch said "Well, okay, I have to go, but your lunchs are on the kitchen table, see you boys later today" Lara said before she lay a kiss on the twins' forehead.

"Have an amazing day, I love you boys" she said "Have an amazing day too mom. We love you too" the twins said as they smiled at their mom and she smiled before before leaving the apartment.

"Okay, let's go" Andy said "Where to?" Mitch asked "To school, what else?" Andy asked "Aren't we gonna help that Five guy" Mitch said "He don't need our help, he have his brothers now. So come on" Andy said "Nope" Mitch said as he stood his ground "We have school" Andy said "Wouldn't it be nice to do something this good. You say that you wanted to be better than The Umbrella Academy, well, this is your chance, a chance to save the world, not being treated and seen like a little kid anymore. If we do this, we can see ourself as heroes" Mitch said and Andy let out a sigh.

"I'm actually glad that you are saying that, 'cause I was actually thinking the same, so come on" Andy said "Yeah, but first we are going to school" Mitch said "Nope, we are gonna skip school" Andy said and Mitch looked at him "We have never skip school" he said "Well, one day have to be the first" Andy said "Do you have any idea how angry mom is gonna get when she finds out what we will be doing right now" Mitch said "What mom doesn't know, she wouldn't get mad about" Andy said.

Five woke up to see Luther sitting in front of him on a chair "Good you are awake" he said "Where are the twins?" Five asked "They went home" Luther said and Five nodded, believing that they wouldn't come back since he had other people helping him now.

But then the door opened and the twins walked in "We are here" they said "I thought you kids had school" Luther said "Our classes are way behind, so it's okay that we missed some classes" Andy said "I thought you two wouldn't come" Five said "Why?" Mitch asked "'Cause you would think I don't need you anymore" Five said "Well, we dragged ourself into this, we might as well we part of ending it too" Mitch said and Five let out a smile.

He actually started caring for the twins.

"So" Luther said, cleaning his throat and Five turned to look at him "When's it supposed to happen? This...apocalypse?" Luther asked.

"I can't give you the exact hour, but...from what I could gather, we have four days left" Five said "Why didn't you say something sooner?" Luther asked "It wouldn't have mattered" Five said "Of course it would. We could've banded together and helped you try to stop this thing" Luther said "For the record, you already tried" Five said "What do you mean?" Luther asked and Five looked down for a moment before taking a deep breath.

"I found all of you" he said quietly before he looked back up at him "Your bodies" he said "We die?" Luther asked "Horribly" Five answered as he thought back to that moment where he found their bodies under the rubbles.

The twins could see that Five was trying his best not to shear a tear and they also felt sorry for him there. He shouldn't have to go through that. That's horrible for anyone. He was way too young to experience any of that.

"You were together, trying to stop whoever it was that ends the world" Five said with the sound of sadness in his voice.

"Wait, how do you know that?" Luther asked and Five pulled out a cloth from his blazer pocket and unravel it, taking out the eye "This was clutched in your dead hand when I found you" he said, holding the eye up before throwing it to Luther who caught it before he started looking at it.

"Must've ripped it out of their head right before you went down" Five said "Whose head?" Luther asked "Like I said, I don't know" Five said and Luther turned the eye around, looking at the back of it "Well, there's a serial number on the back. Think maybe you could try---" "No, that's a dead end" Five said before he let out a chuckled. 

"It's just another hunk of glass" he said and Luther leaned forward, handing the eye to Five who nodded before taking the eye.

"That must have being hard for you" Mitch said which 'cause Five to look at Andy and Mitch to see that they did felt sorry for him.

Then the door opened and Diego walked in "Piece of shit" he said, storming in before stomping down the stairs and walked towards Five.

For some weird reason, Five instinct and reflex kicked in and he quickly blink in front of the twins, putting his arms out before stepping back causing the boys to step back too so their legs hit the bed.

Five had his arms out in front of the twins, like he was protecting them which cause Andy and Mitch to glanced at each other, wondering why some guy they met two days ago are protecting them like a parent.

But before Diego could reach Five, Luther grabbed Diego, pushing him back while keeping a hold on him causing Diego to start grunting and moving around, trying to get away from Luther as he held him in the air "Nope, let me---Get your ape hands off me!" Diego shouted but Luther just picked Diego more up before he squeeze him slightly "I can do this as long as it takes you to calm down" he said  and Diego calm down "Fine" he said, panting and Luther placed him down on the floor again.

Five then turned to the twins "Sorry" he said before he stepped aside so he was not in front of them "Why did you just do that?" Mitch asked "Reflex" Five replied "Why that kind?" Andy said but Five didn't answer, like he was scared to open up.

"Now, wanna tell us what you're taking about?" Luther asked "Our brother has been pretty busy since he got back. He was in the middle of that shootout at Griddy's and then at Gimble Brothers, after the guys in masks attacked the Academy, looking for him" Diego said angry as he pointed on Five "None of which is any of your concern" Five said calm "It is now. They just killed my friend" Diego said and you could hear the pain in his voice.

Luther turned to look at Five "Who are they Five?" he asked.

"They work for my former employer. A woman called The Handler. She sent them...to stop me. Then, soon as Diego's friend got in their way, well, fair game" Five said "And now they're my fair game. And I'm gonna see to it they pay" Diego said before he walked towards the door "That would be a mistake, Diego. They've killed people far more dangerous than you" Five said "Yeah, we'll see about that" Diego said as he walked out the door, slamming the door after him.

"Former employer?" Luther asked them "What's this really about? And don't give me any of this 'It's none of your business' crap, all right?" Luther said "Well, it's a long story" Five said and Luther sat down ready to hear the story.

Five then started telling the three the story of how The Handler recruited him.

Flashback start....

A older Five lowered his rifle as he looked at the woman. The woman had short white hair, wearing black, with a black hat and black sunglasses while holding a black briefcase.

"Who the hell are you?" Five asked "I'm here to help" the woman said and stepped closer "Tell me why I shouldn't put a bullet through your head right now!" Five said "Because...if you did, you wouldn't hear the offer I'm about to make you" the woman said before she put down the briefcase and took off her sunglasses.

"Which would be rather tragic, given your...current circumstances" she said and sat down on a brick.

"I work for an organization called the Commission. We are tasked with the preservation of the time continuum through manipulation and removals" the woman said "I don't understand" Five said "Sometimes, people...make choice that alter time. Free will, don't get me started. When that happens, we dispatch one of our agents to...eliminate the threat" the woman said and Five pointed the rifle at her "No, no, no, no. You misunderstand me. You're not a target. You're a recruit" the woman said and Five lowered the gun "I've come to offer you a job, Number Five. We've had our eye on you for quite some time. And we think you have a lot of potential. Your survival skills have made you quite a celebrity back at headquarters. That and your ability to jump through time" the woman said.

"You saying that I...I could actually leave here. Go...Go back?" Five asked "In return for five years of service. Once your contract is done, you can retire to the time and place of your choosing with a pension plan to boot" the woman said "If you can alter time why not just stop all of this from ever happening" Five said "That's quite impossible, I'm afraid. You see...all of this, it was supposed to happen" she said "That's insane. The end of everything?" Five asked "Not everything. Just the end of...something. So..." the woman said and stretched her arm towards Five "Do we have an agreement?" she asked.

Flashback ends...

"They turned me into the perfect instrument for rehabilitation of the time continuum. Or 'corrections' as they called them. I wasn't the only one. There are others like me. Beings out of time, fractured. Extracted from the lives that they knew. I don't know how they got there. But I do know that none of them was never as good as me" Five explain as the twins and Luther was looking at him.

"They didn't realize it, but I was biding my time, trying to figure out the right equation so I could get back. If I could just get back, I knew I could stop the apocalypse. Save the world. So I broke my contract" Five said.

"So...you were a hitman?" Luther asked "Yes" Five said as Luther handed him a cup of water and a plate with food and Five put the plate next to him.

 "Uh...I mean, you had a code, right? You didn't kill just anybody" Luther said "No code. We took out anyone who messed with the time line" Five said "What about innocent people?" Luther asked "It was the only way I could get back here" Five said "But that's murder" Luther said "Jesus, Luther, grow up. We're not kids anymore. There's no such things as good guys or bad guys. There's just people, going about their lives. But when the world ends all those people die, including our family" Five said and let out a sigh "Time changes everything" he finished before he took a deep breath.

"I better go back to the Academy" Five said as he got up "We're coming with you" Mitch said "You kids don't need to" Five said as he looked at them "Go home to your mom, enjoy that time you have left with her" Five said "Yeah, not gonna happen. Beside our mom is at work so we are coming with you" Mitch said "Beside I always wanted to see the Academy" Andy said.

"Let's go" Luther said and the three got into a car that Five had hot wire.

"So this is the Academy?" Mitch asked as the twins looked around the Academy "It is" Five said "Cool" the twins said "How big is this place?" Andy asked "Big" Five replied.

"Okay, I need to do something. Five you are in charge of the twins, they are your responsibility so make sure they don't make a mess" Luther said "They are not my responsibility, I'm not their dad and I'm not babysitting" Five said "Beside we are more mature that most 13-year-old and we don't need a babysitter" Andy said as the two walked after Five.

"What is your plan in how to stop the apocalypse?" Mitch asked "I don't know. I have to do something. Make some equations, just something" Five said as they follow him up the stairs.

"Are you really an assassin?" Mitch asked and Five nodded.

"The company I worked for, its name is 'The Commission'. They monitor all times and space to make sure that whatever is supposed to happen...happens. Their job is to protect the timeline. And if someone is messing with the timeline, they sent agent like me out to kill them. So the timeline don't changed. During my time at the Commission, I was taught every skill that would be necessary to fulfill the missions assigned to me, like picking locks. And I became the best of them" Five explain.

"So you're an Assassin?" Andy asked "Yeah" he said before he stopped, turned around and looked at the twins.

"I never like it. I was good at my work, and I took pride in it. But it never gave me pleasure, never, not once. But it was either that or being stuck in the apocalypse and never get the chance to get back to my family, never be able to save the world" he said and the two tilted their heads "Listen, it's okay that you two don't want to help me anymore and that you are scared of me and you probably see me as a monster and killer, but that's the truth and I don't want you two to think that I'm some kind of hero, that is here to save everyone, 'cause I'm not a hero" Five said and you could see the sadness in his eyes and hear it in his voice.

"We don't think you are a monster" Mitch said and Five looked back at the twins "It's not like you are Ted Bundy or Jack The Ripper who killed for no reason" Mitch said "Yeah, you have killed people but the way you explain it, you only did it for the greater good of the universe. You only kill people to protect the one you love. And if you hadn't taking that job, you wouldn't be here, trying to save the world, save your family" Andy said "And I think that makes you a hero" Mitch said and Five smiled as he looked at the twins.

But then Andy spotted something on the floor behind Five "Is that blood?" he asked as he pointed on the floor while they could hear a voice "Oh, boy..." Klaus said from inside of a room.

Five looked down to see saw bloody footsteps leading to Klaus' room.

His eyes followed the red stains of blood on the floor to see that they started in the bathroom before going to Klaus' room.

Five put his hands in his pockets before the three walked over to the door and Five knocked on the door causing Klaus to turn around and spotted his brother and two young boys standing by the door 

"You okay?" Five asked "Hey" Klaus said before he looked at Mitch and Andy "Woah, you are the spitting image of him" he said as he glanced at Mitch.

"Yeah of course I am. Me and Andy are twins" Mitch said as he pointed on Andy "No, I was talking about Five and you" Klaus said which cause Five and Mitch to glanced at each other.

"Are you babysitting Five?" Klaus asked "Nope, they are two kids helping me with this, since they both seemed pretty smart and they also more mature than this family" Five said and Klaus nodded.

"Are you okay?" Five asked "Yeah, I just...Long night" Klaus said and let out a chuckled.

Five knew something was wrong, his brother was not himself.

"More than one, from the looks of it" Five said "Yeah" Klaus said as he put on a shirt "Don't remember the dog tags" Five said as he looked at the dog tags around Klaus' neck and he let out a grunt "Yeah, they belonged to a friend" he said as you could hear the dog tags jingle a bit and Five leaned his right shoulder against the door frame while he kept his eyes on Klaus.

"How about that new tattoo?" Five asked as he spotted the tattoo on Klaus' left shoulder "You know, I don't totally remember even getting it. Like I said, it was a long night" he answered.

"Something is wrong with you" Andy said "Yeah, you were all weird and happy Klaus before, what happen?" Mitch asked "I don't want to talk about it" Klaus said.

"You did it, didn't you?" Five asked "What are you talking about?" Klaus asked "You know, I can recognize the symptoms, Klaus" Five said before he entered the room.

"Symptoms of what?" Klaus asked as he sat down on the bed "The jet lag. Full body itch. Headache that feels like someone shoved a box of cotton up into your nose and through your brain. You gonna tell me about it?" Five asked "Your pals, when they broke into the house and they couldn't find you, they took me hostage instead" Klaus said 

"And in return, you stole their brieface" Five said "Yeah" Klaus said and Five let out a chuckled "I thought there was money in it, or I could pawn it, you know, whatever" Klaus said before he let out a sigh "And then I opened it" he said "And the next thing you knew, you were...where? Or should I say when?" Five asked.

"What difference does it make?" Klaus asked "What diff---Uh--- Okay, how long were you gone?" Five asked "Almost a year" Klaus said "A year? Do you know what this means?" Five asked "Yeah, I'm ten months older now" Klaus said "No, this isn't any sort of joke, Klaus. Hazel and Cha-Cha will do whatever they can to get the briefcase. Where is it now?" Five asked as he looked around the room, trying to spot it.

"Gone. I destroyed it. Poof" Klaus said and Five looked back at him as he made a explosion with his hand

"What the hell were you thinking?" Five asked aggressive "What do you care?" Klaus asked Five "What do I care? I needed it, you moron, so we could get back. I could start over" Five said "Just...Just..." Klaus said and walked towards the door "Where are you going?" Five asked "Interrogation's over, just...leave" Klaus said as he left the room.

"So what now?" Andy asked and Five walked over to the nightstand before he grabbed a piece of paper and started writing something down, but suddenly he stop as the memory of that time he wrote down his phone number to Lizzy after they slept together for the first time that night they met appeared, and that made him miss her even more.

"You okay?" Mitch asked which cause Five to snap back to reality as he blink a few times with his eyes "Yeah, I'm fine" he said before he wipe a single tear that have appeared in his left eye.

"What are you writing?" Andy asked as the twins was watching Five writing.

"A message for Hazel and Cha-Cha, who was those two people that are hunting me" Five replied.

"What is the plan?" Andy asked "I need to made a probability map" he said "A what?" Mitch asked in confusing "Will you two help me?" he asked and the twins looked at each other.
